Academic Traditions The Academic Procession The centuries-old pageantry of the academic procession dates from traditions rooted in the early universities. The Mace Derived from the French masse, or club, the mace was once a fierce battle weapon used during the Middle Ages. Over time it lost its war-like image and became a symbol of peaceful leadership when kings removed the spikes from their maces and encrusted them with jewels and precious metals for ceremonial use. Since then, the mace has been used in ceremonial processions as a symbol of authority. Lock Haven University has two maces fashioned from the wood from old Sullivan Hall, which once stood on the present site of Stevenson Library. Carried by co-marshals, the maces indicate that the activity is an official function of the University. The Medallion The Lock Haven University medallion is a symbol of the Office of the President. The president wears the medallion with academic regalia at formal University ceremonies. The handcrafted medallion is a three-dimensional sculpture crafted in bronze featuring the University’s original building, Price Hall. The chain bears the names of the University’s fourteen presidents, as well as the four seals the University has had since 1870. Academic Dress Academic dress, generally consisting of a gown, cap and hood, date back to the Middle Ages when universities were forming in England and other parts of Europe. Since universities grew out of church schools, the dress of the scholar was the dress of the cleric. The cut of the long gown, derived from the medieval robe, indicates the wearer’s degree level. The bachelor’s gown, distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves, is worn closed. The master’s gown is worn open or closed and has long, cut sleeves with a square base. The doctoral gown, worn either open or closed, has full, round sleeves and is embellished with velvet panels down the front of the gown with velvet bands on the sleeves. The velvet trim may be black or may indicate the wearer’s field of study. The head covering evolved from the skullcap worn by the monks in cold weather. The skullcap acquired a point on top, which then evolved into a tassel. Today, the skullcap has been replaced by a mortarboard cap. Degree holders wear the tassel over the left front quarter and candidates wear the tassel over the right quarter until the degree is conferred. Those with doctorates often wear soft fouror six-sided velvet tams, usually with a gold tassel. Originally worn over the head to protect the monks from weather, the hood has evolved into the most significant part of the academic dress. Worn over the shoulders like a cowl, the hood varies in length and appearance according to the degree of the wearer. The master’s hood is three-and-a-halffeet long with a three inch border. The doctoral hood is four feet in length with a five-inch border. The lining of the hood bears the colors of the college that conferred the wearer’s degree, so that graduates of a particular institution may be recognized in the academic procession. The hood’s velvet borders indicate the wearer’s academic field.

Lock Haven University Alma Mater Where the crystal Susquehanna Shimmers in the sun; Where the mountains cast their shadows When the day is done; Where the hemlock pine and maple Murmur in the night; Beneath the starlit sky till dawning Brings the morning light. There’s Lock Haven Alma Mater, Cherished as in days long past! May we be worthy sons and daughters Long as life shall last! Where the ivied tower measures Time for work and play; Time for sports and songs and laughter Through each pleasant day; Where enduring friendships flourish Sturdy through the years; Where learning leads to early wisdom Substance of careers.
