University Without Walls Degree Program Clinton Forest Moewe .

Peter W. Rodino Three years ago he was almost totally unknown outside his home state; today he is a national figure �nd to many Americans, a national hero. Peter W. Rodino, Jr. is a United States Congressman, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and the man who presided over House hearings on the impeachment of Richard Nixon. An army captain during World War II and a lawyer by profession, Mr. Rodino entered public service a quarter of a century ago when he was elected to Congress as a Democratic Representative from the 10th district of New Jersey. An active interest in community welfare work has marked Rodino's career. He was a leader in a move­ ment in New Jersey for the rehabilitation of delinquent boys. At the end of WW II he was one of the principal speakers of the United Nations appeal crusade for the aid to children in war-stricken areas. He has held the Middle Atlantic chairmanship of the Veterans Housing Committee and is active on the Veteran's Affairs Committee of the House. His outstanding service on the Judiciary Committee of the House led to his becoming Chairman of the full committee in 1973. His distinguished leadership during the impeachment hearings has won him national recognition. Mr. Rodino is associated with American Veterans of World War II, National UNICO Club, Fellowship of United States-British Comrades, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also belongs to the Loyal Order of Moose, Elks, and Essex County Bar Association. The Congressman is a knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta, and has received a papal decoration, the Italian War Cross and Bronze Star. He is also a Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy.

Eric Hoffer Eric Hoffer, respected author, philosopher and senior research professor at the University of California at Berkeley, began his unorthodox career in a California box factory in the early twenties. After stints as a migrant field worker, gold miner, and dish washer, Mr. Hoffer spent more than twenty years as a longshoreman on the Pacific coast. It was during these years that his romance with the printed page blossomed. A self-educated man, he read voraciously and wrote in railroad yards and in the fields. He secured library cards in a dozen towns in order to pursue his studies while he traveled and worked. His first book, The True Believer, was published in 1951 and reissued with a new introduction in 1963. This analysis of the revivalist phase of mass movements is noted for its brilliance and cold logic, and has been favorably compared with Machiavelli's The Prince. Other books authored by Hoffer are The Passionate State of Mind, 1955; The Ordeal of Change, 1963; The Temper of Our Time, 1967; Working and Thinking on the Waterfront: A Journal, June 1958-May 1959, 1969; First Things, Last Things, 1971; Reflections on the Human Condition, 1973. Hoffer's epigrams are published weekly in the San Francis­ co Examiner.

While this author's pessimistic view of man is frequently noted, his work is also distinguished by a belief in the individual's capacity for growth. Mr. Hoffer is a member of the International Longshoreman's and Warehouser's Union, a member of the San Francisco Art Commission, and holds a Commonwealth Club of California Gold Medal awarded in 1952 for The True Believer.
