SAINT IGNATIUS LOYOLA by Thomas Loya, 1991 from the collection of John Carroll University

This icon was painted to mark the 500th anniversary this year of the birth of Saint Ignatius, and the 450th anniversary at the beginning of this school year of the founding of the Society of Jesus. The Saint is depicted according to the formalities of iconography: wisdom lines on his forehead, the long slender nose of nobility, ascetic cheeks, and the large ears and small mouth of those who listen more than they talk. He points to the hook of the Spiritual Exercises that contains the essence of his spirituality. Above him are three of the vows that Jesuits take, below is their motto: For the Greater Glory of God. To the left is depicted the wounding and conversion of Ignatius in 1521, and the founding of the Jesuits and their approval by Pope Paul III in 1540. The first picture is modeled after that of the Jesuit Brother Pozzo in the Church of St. Ignatius in Rome; St. Peter is included, for the vigil of his feast was a special moment in the recovery and conversion of Ignatius. Br. Pozzo's painting is included in Carroll's Jesuit Gallery. On the right, John Carroll's Grasselli Tower symbolizes Jesuit schools, and the globe Jesuit missions, both aspects of the lgnatian apostolic spirit. Icons feature prominently in the liturgy of the Eastern rites. The president of the University is hi-ritual, celebrating the liturgy in the rite of the Byzantine Catholic Church as well as in the Latin rite; hence, his special interest in icons.

HONORARY DEGREES

Doctor of Letters Shusaku Endo, B.A. Presented by:

Susan 0. Long, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Sociology

East is East, they say, and West is West, and Never the twain shall meet. And yet in you these Disparate cultures do meet, the Christian faith Of Europe struggling to grow in Japanese Soil and soul. Out of that struggle and strife you Have fashioned a literature, challenged Us with problematic tales, woven your Stories together with wisdom, humor And consummate craftsmanship. You probe with Keen discernment the dark depths of sin, the Uttermost reaches of the human heart, the Silence of God. You trace out for us the Earthly life of Jesus - that man who shares our Needs and sorrows, allows for our weakness, and Shows us God's maternal face. Your work unites Extremes: the wise fool, the apostate's cross, and In the end our separate worlds much more at one. John Carroll University, honored to honor you, Claims you as her own and confers Upon you the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.

Doctor of Divinity Rev. James E. O'Reilly, S.J. Presented by:

Most Rev. Anthony M. Pilla, D.D. Bishop of Cleveland

Jesuits and their friends celebrate these days A twofold feast: five hundred years since the birth of Master Ignatius, and fifty less from the Establishment, to God's greater glory, of the Society of Jesus. Your life and work ExemplifY the highest traditions Of Jesuit service to the Church and world. Responding to the call of Christ the King, Entreaties of provincials, and the plight of those In need, you have been a compassionate father, Loving friend and counselor, community Leader, missionary, educator of Youth, a man of prayer, director of souls, and Judicious guide to the Exercises. Ever a man for others, you work but Seek for no reward or rest; your generous, Unselfish care, concern and love have won you In return the deep respect and love of Those you serve, your brothers, and ourselves. John Carroll University is honored to honor you, Companion of Jesus, and confers Upon you the degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa.

ALUMNI MEDAL AWARDS Presented by J. Gordon Priemer Class of 1964 President, Alumni Association The Alumni Medals are conferred annually as the highest award of the John Carroll University Alumni Association upon alumni and others who have, through the distinguished conduct of their lives, either brought extraordinary credit to the university or contributed conscientious service to the Alumni Association, or both. The recipients of the award this year are: Thomas J. Gerst Class of 1961 Tom Gerst has devoted much of his adult life to the service of others. When Tom graduated from John Carroll in June of 1961, he joined the U.S . Army Transportation Corps. He was assigned to light aircraft reconnaissance, and his desire to become a professional test pilot evaporated when Tom had his first and only crash landing. Though both wings came off, he walked away from the crash scene. Thankful, he vowed he would spend the rest of his life helping others. To this day, he has been true to his word. Tom has been a benefactor to John Carroll, a leader in his business community, and a fund raiser for community aid and education. Tom was president of the JCU Alumni Association from 1981 to 1982. Father T. P. O'Malley, S.J., asked him to head up a task force to study and make recommendations on revamping the placement oflice and the career network program. Tom's suggestions, including improving the office space, reorganizing the management of the department with a dean as the overall head, and the formation of a formal Alumni Career Network, were accepted and implemented. Tom has been an active participant and mentor in the Alumni Career Network ever since. Tom, a founder of the JCU Parents Club, also has been an active member of the JCU Akron Alumni Club. He co-chaired his 25th reunion, and has been a class agent for many years. Besides his devotion to John Carroll, Tom has supported many civic causes and was very active as an Executive Fund Raiser on the board of the Akron Chapter of "Project Learn." He is the president/owner of Management Recruiters of Akron, a loving husband to Joanne (who works with him in the business), and a devoted father to Kathryn, who graduates from JCU this year, and Michael, who is a student at the University of Akron. In recognition of his tireless support of John Carroll University, his ethical leadership in business, his pioneering of the career network, and his responsiveness to the less fortunate in his community, the Alumni Association is honored to present the Alumni Medal to Thomas J. Gerst of the Class of 1961.

Rev. Daniel T. Rice, S.J. Class of 1940 "Go forth and teach all nations."' Father Daniel T. Rice, S.J., has heeded this command, and has labored for over 50 years as a Jesuit missionary at St. Xavier Mission in Patna, Bihar, India. "Dan Baba, " as he is affectionately known in his work place, has been "proclaiming the Good News to the poor," and building Christian worshipping communities that are integrated into the pluralistic society of Hindus, Muslims, and other non-Christian tribes. Father Rice graduated from John Carroll University in 1940 and entered the Society of Jesus . "Dan Baba" says it was his experience with the Jesuits that inspired him to join the Jesuit ranks, and to share their life of service to God and humankind. He is ever grateful for the nurturing atmosphere at John Carroll that fostered his vocation and brought it to fruition. [14]

Though Father Rice has returned only once to the United States, he maintains close ties to his classmates, many of whom have shared his missionary apostolate by supporting him through prayer and donations. At Father Rice's reque st, the Class of 1940 has collected money at its annual Christmas party to purchase the medicine, clothing, and shelter needed at the mission. Only 15 cents is needed to inoculate a child against the diseases which kill thousands of children each year. Dedicated to his children and the poor, Father Rice has labored to lessen the burdens of sickness, sorrow, and hunger that are the daily routine of his flock. "Dan Baba" lives in and among the Indians, choosing to adopt their impoverished life style as hi s own . W ith only his courage, faith and warmth, he has comforted countless numbers of suffering children and the poor. His life is a testament to Jesuit ideals and he has quietly made a real difference in a world of pove rty and injustice. In recognition of his 50 years of dedication to the poor, his compassion for the sick, and for his life of commitment to the Jesuit ideals of service, magis, and justice, the Alumni Association is honored to present the Alumni Medal to Father Daniel T. (Dan Baba) Rice, S. J., Class of 1940. (Since Father Rice is unable to he with us today, due to poor health, the Alumni Medal is being awarded in absentia. Accepting for him is Mrs . Ruth Graskemper, long-time friend and benefactor to Father Rice's mission in India .)

The Honorable Francis Class of 1942

J. Talty

The late Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Father Pedro Arrupe, S. J., once stated that the aim of a Jesuit education is to produce "Men for Others ." Judge Francis J. Talty is a living affirmation of this ideal. His life has been dedicated to others through his belief in the value and joy of a life of service and integrity. Judge Talty began his legal career after graduating from John Carroll University in 1942 and Western Reserve Law School in 1946. He subsequently served as associate general counsel to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers prior to entering private law practice in 1953. In 1964, he was elected president of the Cuyahoga County Bar Association, and later that year, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. He presided at many significant trials, including the Sam Sheppard retrial from which the legal standards relating to pre-trial and trial publicity evolved. In 1970, he was elected Judge of the Probate Division where he has served as Presiding Judge since 1972. Judge Talty has received numerous awards for both personal and professional accomplishments, including the Jewish National Fund Lawyers Award and Irishman of the Year. He is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame of both Holy Name High School and John Carroll University. He has been active in many professional organizations including the National College of State Trial Judges, Ohio Probate Judge Association, National College of Probate Judges, and the Ohio Judicial Conference . Though Irish, he holds memberships in many other ethnic organizations including Polish, Bohemian, Slovak, Hungarian, Slovenian, and Czech . On a personal level, Judge Talty has remained committed to athletics and community service. He has served as president of the Cleveland Baseball Federation since 1975, chairman of the Multiple Sclerosis Chest Campaign, member of the Ad visory Committee for Catholic Big Brothers, member of the Board of Catholic Charities, and has been a significant fund raiser for Villa Angela, the Trappist Monks and, of course, his alma mater, John Carroll University . In recognition of his distinguished public service, his significant contributions to the community, his leadership in civic affairs, and his dedication to John Carroll University, the Alumni Association is honored to present the Alumni Medal to Judge Francis J. Talty, Class of 1942, truly " A Man for Others."

Biographies of the Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipients

J. JOSEPH WHELAN, born in Cleveland in 1942, is a Fellow in Urban Education and a Visiting Assistant Professor of Education at John Carroll University, as well as educational consultant to the Scholarship-inEscrow program. He graduated from Carroll in 1965 and has his M.A. in educational administration from Case Western Reserve University. In his work in the Cleveland school system he has initiated many innovative improvements, addressing in particular the needs of minority and low-income children. He is widely in demand as a speaker on educational excellence and leadership. He taught at St. Francis School and Prospect Elementary School, but is best known for his work as principal of Chambers Elementary School from 1969-1990. Chambers is an all-black school in a crime-riddled neighborhood; seventy percent of its students come from one-parent homes and seventy-five percent live in low-income housing, yet under Whelan's tutelage it has earned many awards for excellence, including two national awards from the Department of Education, which has also named him National Distinguished Principal for Ohio . Chambers was featured by former Secretary of Education Bennett as a model school in his book, Schools That Work : Educating the Disadvantaged. Mr. Bennett writes, "Joe Whelan is among the finest elementary school principals in America. Certainly I have not met any better." Mr. Whelan is a member of the JCU Board of Trustees and a Past President of the JCU Alumni Association, which has added to his many other awards the JCU Alumni Medal.
