City Citizens Summer Program (2016)

City Citizens Summer Program Two Sessions: June 27 – July 22 (four weeks of tuition) July 25 – August 19 (four weeks of tuition) Summer lends itself both to outdoor learning activities and to simple “Fun in the Sun” play and local field trips that form strong bonds among the children. The opportunities in our immediate downtown vicinity, coupled with the communitybuilding and peer awareness instilled through the summer activities, combine to make our summer session a valuable part of the year. Montessori principles of care for the classroom (and larger) environment and security in and sense of classroom community are fostered every day. Nothing stimulates progress in the classroom more than natural opportunities for cultivating friendships among the children.. In a Montessori environment, children learn from observing as well as doing. Whether a child is observing in order to learn from another child who has mastered a certain skill, or observing to figure out where he/she can lend a hand to a peer, the child development from peer interaction is invaluable. Our summer curriculum builds in many activities for which we have little time (or weather!) during the school year. Further, summer is a time for many children who are with us only for the morning to experience some of the activities we bring into the afternoons during the school year.

Summer Daily Activities (2016) With the vast array of interdisciplinary opportunities, combining indoors and out, our Montessori materials (per se) disappear from the shelves to be replaced with other valuable and fun activities.

Physical Education Gross motor skills and coordination are quintessential parts of a child’s development and the summer is the time to prioritize them. Many of our teachers are active themselves and are excited to lead the children in physical education. We’ll emphasize the following: Pre- sports (soccer) skills: catching, kicking and guiding a ball Traditional Field Games: Short foot races, relay races, wheelbarrow races, obstacle courses, bean bag tosses, etc. Park Games: Frisbee, Kite-flying Yoga or Creative Dance (Rainy or very hot days)

Summer Theatre/Creative Arts/Drama Summer Theatre is an optimal time to take the interdisciplinary nature of Montessori to new arenas. Children expand their art to the bigger “canvas” of set design. Small sewing or needlepoint projects that might be in the practical life area of the classroom during the year (and certainly cutting and gluing) find life in the fabric of costumes and costume-making. Mask making workshops utilize painting, cutting and gluing skills. Music and movement become the means to acting and define the tone of and steps through the play. Story-writing and vocabulary building continue through use of new words like “audience”, “understudy”, “plot.”

Children practice emotion and utilize a full range of emotion words with faces in the mirror as they develop their “acting” skills. Sequencing skills enable the children to recognize what follows what as they “change sets” or learn their cues to come on stage. Science comes into play with lessons on simple machines, ranging from making a pulley for the curtains to creating machines for spilling out “fairy dust” or “weather” or any other mood-enhancing set element.

At the end of the summer, the children put on their play internally for staff who have not previously been involved with or seen the Summer Theatre work.

Music and Movement Sensory integration, body awareness and acting skills are developed through music and movement classes and “rehearsals” for the Summer Theatre production.

Preprimary Two Week Thematic Units Our Preprimary summer group builds the curriculum around thematic units, with corresponding field trips. Teachers begin working on thematic units in the late winter. The past two year’s thematic units included: Baseball Unit – Field Trips to Fenway and singing with Wally; practice in the Common baseball field Boston Unit (Animal Theme) – Field Trips on Harbor, to Prudential Observatory, Franklin Park Zoo and throughout City Colors Unit – Tie Dye Shirts, books of colors, cameras around Garden; canvas paintings Theatre Unit – Puppet Show Field Trip; face painting; “stage” discussions

Insect Unit – Field Trips to Arnold Arboretum and Harvard Museum of Nat History American History Unit – Field Trips to Tall Ships and USS Constitution Museum Pond Life Unit – Field Trips to Boston Common Pond and Walden Pond* Tide Pools Unit – Boston Harbor Islands Field Trip * Walden Pond cancelled by Park Rangers for overcrowding but we hope to go again

Toddler and Preprimary General Field Trips Aquarium All classrooms will walk to the aquarium for more than one visit to the sea lions swimming outside. Classes will enjoy an ice cream (or juice popsicles for our youngest) while watching the sea lions being fed! Toddlers enter the aquarium as part of their field trip, seeing all it has to offer and even experiencing the touch pools! Swan Boats Pre-primary and toddler classes will be excited to take a few rides on the historic swan boats. From spring onwards, we will be watching the swans and ducks, and now we will have an opportunity to join them in the pond! Carousel(s) Boston brings carousels to the Common (early summer) and to the Rose Kennedy Greenway (late summer). We take trips to both. This has always been a highlight of the summer group experience together.

Navy Yard in Charlestown (T-boat ride) The T boat ride is an exciting part of a trip to Charlestown’s Navy Yard. Fire Station

The friendly fire chief who inspects our School quarterly has invited us on a trip to their firehouse this summer.

Artesani Water Park (on Esplanade on Soldiers Field Road) The children can enjoy a beautiful playground overlooking the river and a great wading/swimming pool and fountains. Lifeguards on site. Boston Harbor Islands The children play in the water, explore seashells and seaglass and have lunch at one of the beautiful Boston Harbor Islands. The ferry boat ride is a highlight of the trip. We invite a significant number of parents to join us for this trip.

And More to be determined. . .

Play, Play, Play (Summer in the City!) North End Playground (Commercial Street) Students will enjoy playing at a wonderfully sized playground located on the Rose Kennedy Greenway and Boston Harbor. This playground is complete with an age appropriate structure for our Toddler, Twos and Pre-primary students, as well as, a sand pit in which they can dig and enjoy beach toys. The area also has great picnic opportunities. We will pack our snack or lunches, depending on the time and the group and will have a picnic while watching the boats come in and out of the harbor. Esplanade Playground and Fountain Another playground that we will explore with Toddler, Twos and Pre-primary classes is the playground found just beyond Community Boating on the Esplanade.

There is both a playground and a fenced fountain/wading pool area. Here the children can play and watch the duck boats and other water craft. We will plan from time to time to pack picnic lunches to eat on the Esplanade before walking or taking the T back to school.

Frog Pond Children will be able to cool off on a hot, summer day at the frog pond water area. Students should bring to school a bathing suit, towel, sun hats and lots of sunscreen! The Frog Pond Foundation ensures that the Frog Pond is chlorinated and that the entire Pond is drained for thorough cleaning every week to ten days. For our youngest infants, we will bring our own inflatable pool as well as tepid tap water to “splash” comfortably next to the Frog Pond.

And Much More! Happy Summer Dreaming.

Plan to Come and Enjoy!
