SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE 2016

Go WILD this summer and join the free TD Summer Reading Club. The TD Summer Reading Club is Canada’s biggest, bilingual summer reading program for kids of all ages, all interests and all abilities. It’s easy to read. You can borrow from the Library, read a magazine or newspaper with a friend, read a recipe to create something delicious and yes, graphic novels or comic books count as reading material. Read at home, online, on the road or wherever your summer takes you. You can join by registering at the Welland Public Library, starting Monday, June 27. Joining the club means getting a chance to win fun prizes every week throughout the summer. Prizes were generously donated by: Hillside Lanes

The Welland Public Library is proud to partner with Welland Transit and the City of Welland for another summer of reading and riding to both library branches. Ride to Read supports our TD Summer Reading Club and summer programs. This special service begins Thursday, June 30. Those participating in Ride to Read 2016 will be entered in to a draw for a special prize donated by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1633! For more details or to get your sticker for Ride to Read 2016, visit either library branch starting Monday, June 27.

Celebrate Canada with children’s activities, food, live entertainment and fireworks at dusk. Look for Ms. T the Bubble Queen starting at 5:00pm and learn how you can make unique bubbles. (In accordance with City By-Laws, no sparklers or personal fireworks allowed.) Welland Neighbourhood Project Block Party Wednesdays, July 20 (Dover Park- 60 Dover Road) & August 24 (Manchester Park- Hagar St. & Golden Blvd.): 3:00-7:00pm Meet the Neighbours is a free, fun and easy way to connect with people while enjoying Welland’s great green spaces. Bring the grandkids, call a neighbour, pack a lawn chair and head to the park for a fabulous afternoon of fun for all ages. WPL will be visiting the WNP Block Parties at 5:00pm to demonstrate some simple, budget friendly recipes for the family. Sponsors: City of Welland, Welland Neighbourhood Project and Healthy Kids Community Challenge Niagara St. George Family Day in the Park Sunday, August 21: 1:00-5:00pm, St. George Park (St. George St. at the corner of Roach Ave.) The City of Welland and WPL join forces to bring you Ms. T the Bubble Queen! She returns to Welland to take the stage at 2:00pm with her one-of-a-kind Bubbleology Show. Enjoy great activities for the family all afternoon and make sure to visit the WPL table to make a bubble inspired craft. Free swimming, live entertainment, firework display at dusk and more.

All programs with food require a food waiver form to be signed before the program begins. SPECIAL EVENTS Concerts on the Canal: Splash’n Boots @ Merritt Park Amphitheater Saturday, July 2: event starts at 10am and the show begins at 11am Join the Welland Public Library and the Welland Museum at Merritt Park before the big show to get your face painted and do a fun craft. Then have a seat and get ready for a wild performance by Treehouse’s very own, Splash’n Boots. Kids and adults alike will recognize this fun duo from Treehouse TV. This high energy show will have kids up on their feet, singing and dancing along. This is a free event and all are welcome. Seaway Mall The Library will be providing fabulous activities at the Seaway Mall at noon prior to the Wednesday afternoon shows. Wednesday, July 6 (Mad Science: 1:00pm show): Prove that you’re a science expert by visiting our table before the show starts to make a spectacular scientist hat. Wednesday, July 20 (Incredibrent: 1:00pm show): Visit our table before the show to get a glitter tattoo. Saturdays, July 9 & 23 and August 6 & 20: 2:00-2:45pm We’re visiting the Seaway Mall this summer to have some fun creating and experimenting with you and your family. Miss Dar’s Dance Studio Demonstration Thursday, July 21: 2:30-3:30pm @ Main (Community Room) Join Miss Dar’s School of Dance, under the direction of their Dance Educators, and learn about newer dance styles such as acro dance, lyrical and jazz. How are these different and/or similar to ballet? Watch a demonstration and perhaps learn a few new moves too!

Maker Faire @ Main Thursday, August 18: 2:00-4:00pm Celebrate your reading success and join us at the Maker Faire. Build with the Big Blue Blocks, make a robot and more. Get your map to find out where each activity is located. Get a stamp for every station you visit. Complete the activities to receive your TD Summer Reading Club certificate and be entered into a draw.

St. John Ambulance Babysitters Course Saturday, July 9: 9:30am-4:30pm @ Main This course teaches new babysitters the skills necessary to care for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers. It emphasizes safety, dealing with emergencies and first aid basics. Course materials include: a student activity book, a certificate suitable for framing, and a wallet-sized certificate. Please bring a doll and a lunch. Minimum of eight registrants required.
