M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N T Saint Bernard’s is a Roman Catholic parish providing vital services to the diverse North End community of St. Paul. As we extend the hand of welcome to all, our mission is to learn, love, and live the challenging Word of Jesus Christ, offering parishioners and neighbors direction and support at every phase of their faith journey.

A WORD FROM FR. IVAN Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As we've now "officially" entered into Summer we should look forward to slowing down a bit to enjoy the warm weather and all this season has to offer. I know I'm looking forward to some sunny days, hopefully not too humid, to enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming in one of the many MN lakes. For the last few months, the parish finance council and I have been very busy in developing a budget for the next fiscal year, which is effective July 1st. My goal was to create a budget according to the income we receive from Sunday collections and other donations that come in, and not rely so heavily on the rental income received from the Community School of Excellence (CSE). Some difficult decisions have been made in order to accomplish this goal. Over the last week I met with some of our parish staff to notify them of our need to reduce our salary expenses. These conversations did not come as a surprise to the individuals impacted as they are all aware and have an understanding of the financial situation at our parish. Listed below are the changes that have already happened or will be taking place shortly: Tom Kneissel, Roy Jaworski , and Neil Blageo will no longer be paid sacristans but will continue serving the church in this role as volunteers. I greatly appreciate our three sacristans and I pray that God will bless them hundred fold both spiritually and materially. Sid Smaka, our Music Director will be leaving us on July 10th. I wish to thank him for all the service he's provided to St. Bernard’s and the beautiful music which accompanied our liturgies these last 10 years. We will continue to hire a Cantor & Organist for the 4pm Mass, our Choir will sing at 8am, and Mary Beth Redmond will sing at the 10:30 Mass, Grace Thompson will be a back-up and fill in when needed. Mary Beth will also be volunteering her time to coordinate the liturgical music for all the Masses. David Neira, Our Director of Faith Formation will reduce his hours to part-time status. He will focus his efforts on the RCIA & RCIC programs as well as the Karenni Community Wednesday Internship program. I wish to thank David for his hard work and dedication over the last year to the children & young adult faith formation ministry. I'm grateful he will continue to be with us on a part-time basis. Carol Mike, Parish Secretary has retired after being at St. Bernard's for two years. Cindy Paslawski's position has also been eliminated due to staff reductions. I would like to thank Carol and Cindy for their hard work and dedication to the parish. Some of you may have noticed there is a new face in the Parish Office. Gloria Nava is volunteering her time and talent in the parish office helping with the day to day operations. Karen Cronin, Business Administrator will continue to serve our parish and generously reduced her salary by half. half.

Lastly, I willingly and humbly want to do whatever I can to help the parish so will also be reducing my salary by I thank God for gift of volunteers and all those willing to dedicate their time and talents to our parish.

Any changes to the Karenni Outreach program are on hold. There is potential funding that may be coming to us to sustain the outreach so there will be no immediate changes to that ministry. I want to assure all of you that these staff reductions do not mean the reduction of the activities and ministries at St. Bernard's. I want to build a parish with people who give and love the parish truly and set an example for everyone. In this article I have acknowledged the staff reductions and those who will be volunteering in our parish, however there are many others who already contribute in one way or another who I did not mention and I am very grateful for them as well. Have a Blessed Sunday and Happy Independence Day!

From The Parish Administrator’s Office We have been told that Community School of Excellence (CSE) has signed a 2 year contract with a new authorizer which means they will still be in business for the 2016-17 school year. The parish will have one more year with CSE in our school buildings. They have not given us notice of termination of their lease as of the writing of this article but we have also been told that they will be giving notice by June 30, 2016. As mentioned in a prior article, the parish has engaged Northmarq to find another tenant(s) for the space that will be available as of July 1, 2017. Their leasing staff are very hopeful that we will find a new tenant within the year. I will keep you informed as this progresses. Our parish generously donated $1,053.30 to the Sri Lankan missions on June 12 after a talk from the missionary. Thanks for your support of the missions in other countries! The last Sunday of the fiscal year was last week. The numbers are in (check the weekend collection data) and we were under our annual budget for Sunday envelopes by 7%. This decline has been a trend in this parish for a few years. The main reasons for the decline are the aging of and death of our long time parishioners. We have been blessed to gain many new families over the past 3 - 5 years but many of them are young and immigrants so do not have the same financial resources that our long time parishioners have. Fr. Ivan speaks to our financial situation today in his column. We will take some time this coming year to talk about stewardship and share some of the challenges we face but also how we can work together as a community to continue to strengthen the parish. Have a festive 4th of July! Karen Cronin
