O P E R AT I N G ENGINEERS LOCAL 139 SPECIAL CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER ISSUE November 2005

Terrance E. McGowan Business Manager The holidays mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people and for many of us, it becomes the time of year in which we reflect upon the prior twelve months in our lives. Because it draws yet another work season to a close, many in the skilled trades reflect upon their accomplishments in our industry. Some take this time of year to reflect upon a much broader range of things in their lives. Work, friends, family and for those with a positive attitude, giving thanks for the many blessings they may have received over the year. Like many of our members, I attended a parochial school as a kid. Through most of my youth, I was under the impression that the holidays we celebrated during the winter were somewhat exclusive to the Christians. It wasn’t until I grew older that I came to realize that many walks of life celebrate during this time of the year in one way or another. Whether it is religious, ethnic or even personal, it seems that most people take time out this time of year to give thanks and show appreciation to people who made a difference in their lives in one way or another. That being said, think of how appropriate it is that we take this time to show recognition and appreciation to so many members that have made Local 139 the great Local that it is. During the seventeen Christmas meetings that your constitutional officers and I shall attend during December, we will follow a very time tested agenda. We will recognize those who receive service pins, engineers of the year awards for retired and active members and stand in silent prayer for those members who passed on during the year. These are all members who have played a role in making our union, therefore our lives, a little better through their participation. This year, as an added tribute to the retiree's of the year, we are hanging brand new wall displays in the district offices commemorating those who have won the retiree of the year awards. This was the result of a discussion during a meeting of the Appleton retiree's club when Brother Jack Miller made a suggestion for the project. While it never really was a formal motion, club president Cal Larson checked in for a progress report on behalf of those concerned. District C and D display the recipients in their respective offices, District B office displays the Madison and La Crosse recipients and the displays in Pewaukee and Coloma recognize all retiree's of the year statewide. Good call Jack! This holiday season, take time to personally thank someone who took the time to make you a little bit better at making a living in our trade, oh and while we’re at it, take time out to enjoy the holidays a little bit yourselves. Fraternally,

Terry McGowan Business Manager
