Challenges in Supply Chain, Warehousing & Distribution Presentations HealthCare Solutions. (Carlo Novi) Recent updates and data points driving HealthCare Industry trends and what we, at FedEx, feel are their impacts on the supply chain. Case studies will be presented: Cenetron Diagnostics (Deep Frozen Shipping Solution) and Cadence Pharmaceuticals (cost effective solution for their controlled room temperature transportation needs.)

An industry perspective on medicines bar-coding and bedside scanning. (Chris Dierickx) In recognition of the patient safety case and the effect on reducing errors, it has been a regulatory requirement in the US since 2006 that all pharmaceutical products sold to hospitals must now bear a bar code on the smallest unit of use, i.e. the size dispensed to the patient. Bar coding of medicines to the single unit also assists in the management of medicine alerts and recalls. The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) therefore calls on decision makers, politicians and national administrations to implement bar coding of medicines to the single dose administered in hospitals in national and European regulations. The objective of this presentation is to provide the manufacturing considerations to bar coding medicines to the single unit.

Managing the impact of serialization in supply chains: lessons learned from strategy to implementation at GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines. (Hans Vanderwegen, Filippo Dal Maso) Starting from the current compliance drivers, we will first present why and how most of the pharmaceutical companies are rolling out serialization technology. The impact and challenge of serialization to supply chain processes such as manufacturing, warehousing and distribution will be discussed. Based on some practical examples, a path for gradual implementation of serialization functions will be explained: a pragmatic model that could help companies to minimize impact and risks. Next, we will discuss how companies could meet regulations and at the same time establish a learning project organization that is managing investment costs, business inefficiencies, supply risks and potential project delay. The impact of various implementation levels will be highlighted across the supply chain, from strategic assessment till serialization implementation. Finally, we will present how serialization investments could be leveraged to enhance existing supply chain visibility and efficiency. What are companies doing today and how could serialization bring something more beyond the typical business talk and given the current status of the industry.

Cold chain challenges (Fabian De Paoli) A major challenge with the supply chain is its complexity in each leg of the process, from manufacturing, storage, handling, transportation to final use of the product. Products are exposed to risk of damage, theft, temperature, counterfeiting and other external parameters which may impact the product quality. Product visibility and traceability are difficult to implement due to the numerous distribution legs and a lack of standardization of product identification systems. In addition, there are many standards/guidelines with their own specificities and requirements not always aligned together. Training programs are rarely available across the supply chain and the level of expertise of the supply chain partners varies a lot. We will focus on the main challenges, provide direction to mitigate the risks and propose some opportunities to the various supply chain stakeholders.

Warehouse Automation (CPK PUMA project at Alcon Belgium ) (Eric Coenen, Tim De Vries) Egemin Automation has installed in 2013 a fully automated storage and order picking system with WMS software at Alcon Belgium in Puurs. The system is based on Egemin’s compact picking concept and allows for a more efficient storage and automated production of Alcon’s CUSTOM-PAK®’s, personal operation kits for ophthalmic surgeons. With the new system, over 2 million CUSTOM-PAK®’s will be produced per year.

Challenges in Supply Chain, Warehousing & Distribution Distribution Cost Reduction case study (Laurence Guiot) As part of a supply chain transformation started 2 years ago at GSK Vaccines a large program on Distribution Cost Reduction was initiated end 2012. GSK Vaccines distribute products under cold chain requirement across the world. The purpose of the program was to reduce distribution cost by 15% in 3 years. A major cross-department program involving Procurement, Engineering, Quality, Finance and Supply Chain people was launched to reach the target. All elements related to the cost of the distribution of vaccines were considered like packaging, transport, temperature monitoring were considered as opportunities to optimize our costs while maintaining our quality standards. The presentation will focus on “what” the program achieved but also on “how” these achievements were reached.
