Centennial Gala Celebration Was a Night to Remember Menorah Park celebrated its 100 year anniversary on October 27th with a Centennial Gala held at Temple Adath Yeshurun. It was a great success, with more than 300 people attending and raising over $300,000 through sponsorships and tickets sales. Decorations included historic photos dating back to the founding fathers of the original Jewish Home for the Aged in 1912 and continuing to the present. The event also included dancing to the music of the Stan Colella Orchestra. The Honorary chairs were Sidney and Winnie Greenberg, with Howard and Ellen Weinstein and Steven and Robin Sisskind as co-chairs. Dr. Irving H. Goldman, grandson of one of the co-founders of the original Jewish Home, offered his perspective on Menorah Park’s history; and local news anchor Carrie Lazarus attended with her mother and touched many hearts as she spoke about her late father’s experience at Menorah Park. Television sports anchor, Doug Logan did a masterful job as the event’s master of ceremonies. The reception and dinner was catered by the Oaks at Menorah Park. Many thanks go out to the sponsors, the Gala Chairs and Committee members along with the staff at Menorah Park who made this event a most rewarding evening and a stupendous kick off to Menorah Park’s next 100 years.

From the Chief Executive Officer Before we put our 100th year of Menorah Park unequivocally behind us and begin to look ahead to our next 100 years, I reflect on all the accomplishments and celebrations we have had throughout our centennial year. This included honoring our past Presidents by the establishment of our President’s Circle Endowment Fund, another remarkable and heart felt recognition of residents, staff and volunteers at our annual Shining Stars event, our annual Golf Tournament and the highly successful Centennial Gala. It seemed so much to look forward to and now I realize how much more we still have to look forward to and why. I know I speak for all the staff, Board members and community partners of Menorah Park when I say how proud we are to serve the region with quality care and service. For our seniors who stay a short while on our campus or who live in our residences, we are committed to continue to offer a safe and enriching environment, and choices for a dignified life and healthy aging. And for the future, we promise to work hard, stand up for and devote all of our resources to the health and dignity of all who come to us in need and in transition. One hundred years from now, with your help and support we will be able to say the same. Sincerely yours,

Mary Ellen Bloodgood

Meet our Volunteer Coordinator, Barbara Baum... Become a Volunteer Today!

Barbara Baum, in the Syracuse Jewish Family Service office, has been the Volunteer Coordinator for Menorah Park for a year, working to recruit, interview and guide volunteers to be helpful in many different areas across our campus. “The challenge is to find a good fit for each individual who wishes to help out,” explains Barbara. Service learning requirements at the high school and college level provide a stream of young people eager to make a difference. Recent retirees are another segment of the general population looking for meaningful volunteer positions; and groups of younger students often come in to help out as well. “The most important volunteer job we offer is that of a friendly visitor,” Baum goes on to say, “which is something we can all do.” Before coming to Menorah Park, Barbara held the position of Director of Education at Temple Concord for 15 years. She is also the Principal of the Rabbi Jacob Epstein High School of Jewish Studies. Barbara is a well-known painter and was the featured artist for December at The Oaks, with several works on display. Her favorite subjects to paint these days are her four grandchildren. “For many years I lived across the street on Paddock Drive,” says Barbara, “and my family thought of the Jewish Home as a neighbor and now my mother-in-law lives there. I am so happy to be part of the family that is Menorah Park.” Volunteers are always welcome at Menorah Park. We could not accomplish all that is required to provide quality care and a positive environment without the

commitment and efforts of our volunteers. Please accept our invitation to join a dedicated team of people who give of their time, talent and energy to enrich the lives of our residents. There is always a need for volunteers to help transport residents throughout the campus or come in and brighten someone’s day with a friendly chat, a game of cards or simply read the newspaper to them. The possibilities are endless to put a smile on someone’s face and in turn enrich your own life. Well trained and friendly four-legged friends may volunteer as well, as long as their vaccinations are up-to-date. To find out more about our volunteer program, please contact Barbara Baum at Syracuse Jewish Family Service at (315) 446-9111, ext. 234 or email at [email protected].

The Jewish Home

The Oaks

During the year, the residents of the Jewish Health and Rehabilitation Center have been keeping busy with new programs, including Happy Hour every Tuesday and Thursday in the Café. We have also been enjoying the company of our friends from The Oaks and The Inn once a month, when we all have lunch together. As always, residents look forward to Sunday entertainment, visits from the children of “Babies Boogie” on Tuesdays, as well as “Movie Magic” with Mike Price and music with the Klezmer Band every month.

On the first Tuesday night of each month, the residents of The Oaks at Menorah Park are celebrating something new - FAMILY NIGHT. With an open invitation to family members, friends and neighbors, we gather in the Atrium for dessert and coffee and, to enjoy fellowship and, also, varying types of talented performers. So far we have been amused and entertained by Adirondack Mtn. Cloggers, The Five Tones Woodwind Quintet, “Thanks for the Memories” Game Show and Enzian Bavarian Folk Dancers. On December 4th, the residents enjoyed the FAMILY NIGHT gathering, when they were treated to a “Big Band” style Dance Party.

Our holiday celebrations included a Hanukkah Luncheon for the residents on December 13th, a “Holiday Party” with special entertainment by Paul Modoferi on December 20th, several trips to Lights on the Lake, and of course, our annual holiday decorating contest throughout the facility.

Rothschild Adult Day The community of our Adult Day program had a wonderful 2012. Throughout the year, participants and staff engaged in in-house programming that included arts and crafts, activities involving current events and “Life Lessons” and a weekly “Community Meeting” where they share news with one another. We also have regular entertainment from the community and offer monthly outings. Thanks to the Volunteer Program at Menorah Park, we have had many energetic and talented people come in to assist the staff. One such student, Sarah Connelly, from Le Moyne College, worked with two of our registrants by helping them write down some of their life stories. This project proved to be personally meaningful, not only to the women involved, but to Sarah herself. This October, we bade a fond goodbye to a beloved registrant, Mary S., who was a 15 year veteran of our program. Mary was known across the Menorah Park campus for her sunny disposition and her talent on the piano. We never found a song she couldn’t play by ear. We gave Mary a great send off to her new home in California with a big going away party.

Sellin Rehabilitation KUDOS are in order! The Therapy Department is proud to announce that Susan Valerino, P.T., Tammy Lytle, P.T., and Christine Diorio, P.T., have received advanced Specialty Board Certifications in Geriatric Physical Therapy (GCS). They recently traveled to New Jersey to complete further certifications in Exercise Prescription for the Aging Population (CEEAA). The certifications will benefit our long term residents, as well as short term rehab patients, in numerous ways. They are three of only approximately 1,000 professionals nationwide who hold these designations. Health and Rehab has a “Wish List” for donations: Wish list: Sit to Stand Lift, Seat Lift Assist Cushion, 2 GeriLoungers , Upper Body Ergonometer, Weighted Dowels, Bed Cane, 3 Rolling Stools, 2 Low Over-the- Bed Trays. Please call Sue Valerino at extension 164 to talk about a possible donation.

Also new at The Oaks, is our rotating art wall. This designated area is located in our Atrium; it features local talent of various mediums for our residents and general public alike to enjoy. We have had the pleasure of viewing photography, water colors, and oils on canvas and acrylics. In the future we hope to expand our horizons to include pottery and jewelry collections as well. This is a great way to showcase local artists and keeps us connected with the community in which we live. The Oaks has a “Wish List” for donations: Wish list: Baby Grand Piano, Vacuum Cleaner, X-box, Framed Art, New DVD’s. Please call Jan Edwards at (315) 449-3309 to talk about a possible donation.

Beit Tikvah The young women of Beit Tikvah have enjoyed the past six months. They hosted a BBQ for their families on July 4th, went on family vacations and hosted a community BBQ in August for their peers. The highlight was a performance by salsa dancers. They took a three day vacation to Niagara Falls accompanied by their support staff. While in Niagara Falls, they visited the Aquarium, toured the Dare Devil Museum and rode on the Maid of the Mist. They enjoyed shopping at the outlets and a Shabbat dinner at The Hard Rock Café. Upon their return from Niagara Falls, the young women hosted a Shabbat family dinner at Beit Tikvah, which was enjoyed by all. The New York State Fair was also among the sites they took in this summer, as well as a trip to Hamilton, NY to take part in the Great Chocolate Train Wreck Festival and a visit to the Snake-Oil Glassworks in Skaneateles, where they had fun watching a glass making demonstration. In October, one of the women attended the Self Advocacy Conference in Albany and in November they hosted a festive preThanksgiving dinner for their families. Beit Tikvah continues to be a blessing to our community and a program with all life has to offer. The House has a “Wish List” for donations: Wishlist: Ramp for wheelchairs, New Dishes (meat and dairy), New Flatware, New Electric knife, 16 towels, in groups of 4 in 4 different colors, 16 washcloths in groups of 4 in 4 different colors, and a filing cabinet with a lock. Please call Liz Binder (31)446-4369 to talk about a possible donation.

Syracuse Jewish Family Services (SJFS)

program offering options that everyone can enjoy. We had fun exploring all CNY has to offer, from a boat ride Last year at this time Syracuse Jewish Family Service was on the Erie Canal, to a delicious dinner at Eddies Bar & busy with a top-to-bottom restructuring effort. This year Grill in Sylvan Beach and golf at Butternut Creek! As always, Christina Paul has worked to bring us quality entertainment that promises to energize our body, mind and spirit. We are proud of our expanded activity

By Helen Clancy, Administrator, Menorah Park

We noted an interesting fact when observing our residents who have become Centenarians. As of October, 2012, 6% of the residents of Menorah Park’s long Rose Feinman Anne Rosenzweig Cieta Shotridge term care divIsion were celebrating their 100th birthday. The national average for Centenarians is 0.02%. Amy Pandozzi, RN, ADON, reviewed the residents to determine Marana White Lillian Colbert Margaret Hedges-Yost if there were like characteristics among them. What she found was informative and matches research on the topic. Members of Menorah Park’s 100 year old club were likely to share the following characteristics: 100% female; none on antipsychotics; low number of daily medications (6.1/day); long marriages; history of having or enjoying pets; low incidence of diabetes; and most are residents of the Terrace (our unit for residents with reduced cognitive ability). Other characteristics reviewed did not show similarities among the residents. These included: education level; disease process; oral condition (teeth); Vitamin D3 use; and frequent family contact. This is not in any way a research presentation, rather, these are our anecdotal observations of a very important group of residents whom we are honored to care for.
