Extra Parish Council Meeting Affordable Housing Monday 24th February, 7.30 Brentor Village Hall. At the meeting a representative from Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA) will present a report on the outcome of the recent call for affordable housing sites. Each site will be assessed against the policies set out in the Dartmoor National Park Development Management Plan and advice from other agencies – particularly Devon County Council’s highways department. It is expected that the report will recommend that some sites be ruled out as unsuitable and that others be identified as preferred sites. To ensure that parishioners have a good opportunity for questions and queries on this subject to be answered, and for discussion with councillors and National Park, Borough Council and County Council officers, the Parish Council will hold an open meeting at the village hall, probably in March. Also on the agenda for 24th February is consideration of the parish council’s response to DNPA’s Draft Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) - Affordable Housing in Dartmoor National Park. DNPA says that this “will have the principal aim of facilitating the delivery of affordable housing in the Dartmoor National Park in line with the development plan and national policy.” The document includes proposals to allow mixed developments of affordable housing and private housing for sale in settlements such as Brentor where this is required to subsidise the cost of developing affordable housing. For further detail go to this link on the DNPA website: http://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/planning/plforwardplanning/affordable-housing-spd Tim Beavon, Chair Brentor Parish Council

Brentor and World War I An Open Meeting to discuss plans for a Local History Study and Exhibition in 2014 As many of you will know, August 2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The Brentor Archive Group are planning to mark this event by studying Brentor's contribution to the war effort and how the experience changed life in the area. We hope to hold a history exhibition in November to include original items, photographs and documents from the time and would like as many people as possible to be involved in preparing for this exhibition and other events surrounding it. If you would like to find out more about what is being planned or are simply interested in the history of the village please come along to an open meeting at the village hall on Wednesday 19th February at 7.30pm. Further details about the Group and this project can be obtained from Mike Whitfield 810209, John Wheeler 810083 Philip Whitcomb 01258 452773

Brentor Garden Club “Castle Drogo Gardens Past, Present and Future” A Talk by Head Gardener John Rippin Thursday 20 February 7.30 pm Brentor Village Hall The garden at Castle Drogo is a good example of the Arts and Crafts style and is the highest owned by the National Trust. Overlooking the Teign Vally and Dartmoor, the garden was designed by Edwin Lutyens with planting by George Dillistone for Julius Drewe the founder of the Home and Colonial Stores. The castle has a fine formal garden which contrasts effectively with its striking setting on the edge of Dartmoor .The garden is noted for its rhododendrons and magnolias, herbaceous borders, rose garden, shrub garden and circular croquet lawn. Visitors very welcome - £2.00 on the door Heather Webster 01822 810004

The village show organizers have reluctantly decided not to run the Brentor Village Show this year. Several members of the group have been involved with the show for the past 8 years and would really like a break! It has been a difficult decision to make as we know how much the show is enjoyed and has become an eagerly anticipated part of the village calendar. However, perhaps another team will come forward to take over or will consider running an alternative event this summer. Should another group be willing to pick up the reins we are very happy to pass on the relevant paper work but we really feel that for this year, at least, we need to recharge our batteries. CHICKS Christmas Celebrations & Thanks CHICKS provide free respite breaks for disadvantaged children and young carers at centres in Tywardreath and Brentor. On behalf of the entire CHICKS team and the children, thank you to all local individuals and organisations who gave various donations towards funding weekly camps throughout 2013 and to others who helped by volunteering. Many thanks also to everyone who did the same for running the special CHICKS Christmas Camps. Your support helped give disadvantaged children a Christmas to remember at the two beautiful retreats. Leaving their problems and responsibilities behind, the children were able to go to CHICKS and experience the joy of Christmas like every child should. On Christmas day they woke up to the smell of Christmas dinner cooking in the oven and found their own individual presents nestled under the Christmas tree. Surrounded by friends and adults who care, they finally had the magical Christmas they deserve. Thank you for helping to make this possible.

CHICKS are currently looking for volunteers to help in their busy fundraising office and also outdoors at the Moorland Retreat in Brentor. For further details about the above roles and other opportunities such as volunteering on weekly camps commencing in March, please visit www.chicks.org., call 01822 811020 or email [email protected] Mick Ryan Community Fundraiser Advance Notice of The Next Brentorians Production

Villages in Action advance notice: DALLA On Saturday March 22nd, five of the foremost proponents of traditional Cornish music today will perform at Brentor Village Hall. The members of Dalla have been on a journey from the earliest sparks of the revival in Cornish Traditional Music to the exuberantly expanding universe of the scene today. What their live show offers you now is a joyful, heartrending, life affirming show and tell of the treasures they have found on this journey. They invite you to share in the mischievous delight they take in playing with their tradition, and in their fascination with the world that lies behind the pieces.

By Peter Gordon This is a spoof of Agatha Christie’s character Miss Marple. Joan Maple, a well-meaning local sleuth, seems to attract murder wherever she goes. Performances 7.30pm on April 10th, 11th & 12th For Further information Tel 810412

This term has seen us get off to a sporting start! We are already starting to benefit from the Government’s PE and Sports funding that is going into school budgets over the next couple of years to support and improve the quality and breadth of PE and sports provision in schools across the country. Children in KS1 have already started twelve weeks of Outdoor Learning where they will use the outdoor environment every Friday afternoon. KS2 will participate in the exciting programme next term. A free after-school Gymnastics Club for Years 1 and 2 has also started and professionals from Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club and Plymouth Raiders Basketball Club are giving rugby and basketball coaching to KS2 children. Later, Plymouth Argyle and a professional dance company will be coming in to work with the children. In addition we will continue to participate in local Tavistock events such as the Cross Country League and Fun Runs. KS2 children have also started swimming lessons this term. We will also use some of our funding to go towards a trim trail that will be based at the field which will ensure every child will benefit from the equipment this year and in the future. We will also be purchasing some replacement resources for the children to use on the playground during break and lunchtimes which will encourage them to stay active. Not only are the children keeping fit but KS2 children are also receiving free violin tuition this term as part of the Wider Opportunities funding.

Man Booker prize winner Yann Martel delighted members of the Brentor Book Club when he accepted an invitation to their New Year meeting to discuss his writing and to read some of his new book to the group. The Canadian author is probably best known for his book’ Life of Pi’, which was made into a film in 2012. He took time out from visiting his partner’s family in the village to chat with club members who had chosen to read another of his works ‘Beatrice and Virgil’, which took seven years to write and was published to mixed reviews. The novel is centred on “representations” of the holocaust, which Yann explained was quite a rarity as books tackling this sensitive subject are almost always non-fiction. Visiting from his home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he spent the evening discussing’ Life of Pi’ and the making of the film. Yann also talked about his lengthy procedures involved in researching, writing, rewriting, editing and the eventual publication of a book. The group were then treated to a glimpse of his latest work when he read an extract from the book he has just completed, but which will not be in print for at least another year. Brentor Book Club, which has been running for 10 years, is one of over 200 groups in the county which are supported by Devon Library Services and each month Tavistock library supplies every member of the club with a copy of the book selected for discussion. Yann Martel is a great supporter of public libraries. Tavistock Library’s Darryl Harrison said he had been fortunate to attend other sessions with authors, but this had certainly been the most interesting by far. Sarah Walker-Smith 860165

Brentor Garden Club New Members Very Welcome We are a thriving and friendly group with about 40 members from Brentor and the surrounding villages. We meet in the Brentor Village Hall at 7.30pm on the third Thursday of the month for a talk by a visiting speaker on an aspect of gardening or a related subject. Our meetings are well attended and funds are raised by members’ subscriptions which this year are being kept to £10 for an individual and £15 for a couple. In addition there is an annual lunch and a visit to a garden of interest during the Summer – in 2013 this was to Keith Wiley’s fascinating garden ‘Wildside’. This year we hope to visit the beautiful garden at Bickham House near Kenn. There is an AGM and social evening in December and often a major fund-raising event in the summer, such as a plant sale. We have an exciting and interesting programme for 2014, all are welcome whether novice or experienced gardeners so do come and join us For details of monthly meetings to December 2014 see www.brentorvillage.org – or contact: Sue Stephens – 860374 Heather Webster - 810004

Brentor Calendar News A grand total of £396.50 profit has been made from the sale of nearly 200 calendars, so a big thank you to everyone who bought one for themselves and friends and family. We also had orders from as far away as Gloucestershire and USA from ex residents who spotted the calendar on the website and wanted a little bit of Brentor throughout the year. Keep taking those seasonal photos as we plan to make a calendar for 2015. Top tips: remember that the photos will need to be reproduced as a square, except for the cover, which is long and slim. The cover will be a separate category this year. People like animals, how about some highland cattle on Blackdown?
