Overheard at the Bookmark Cocktail Party: "What a great house and such gracious hosts" "The food was gorgeously delicious" "It was so much fun meeting the authors in person"

Overheard at the Book and Author Luncheon - and we quote: “Sean McLaughlin was a delight and a real keeper.” “There wasn't a dry eye at my table when Gerda Klein spoke.” “I just loved Jane Green.” “We learned so much from Michael Hiltzik.” “David Eisenhower was smart and charming.” “Mary Jane Clark was so delightful.” “Harry Hamlin was a hoot!”

Quotes from the authors: “I had a feeling that when I agreed to speak at the event it would be great, and I wasn't wrong!” David Eisenhower...”I really appreciate the opportunity to speak to such a group of intelligent readers.” Jane Green and Mary Jane Clark... ”I want to do as much as I can for Brandeis University.” Gerda Klein... “This was so much fun for me and I enjoyed reading all the books.” Sean McLaughlin

Overheard while cruising the shopping areas: “We loved shopping at the Boutiques and Silent Auction and the room looked like spring in bloom.” Guests and members in the audience... ”This year I asked five people to join me at my table. Next year I am going to fill a table.” a Brandeis Life Member... ”The authors were great and the timing of the event was perfect.” Brandeis Members... ”I didn't know about some of the authors but after I heard them speak, I purchased their books, and used my coupon!” a Brandeis Member... ”I loved the introduction video and finding out about Brandeis University.” a guest

Quote from the Book and Author Chairmen Carol Kern and Sue Karp: “One of the reasons we love working on this event is because of all the fabulous committee chairmen and volunteers. Without your loyalty, support, dedication and commitment the Book and Author Events would not be the huge success they are. We truly enjoyed working with each and every one of you and we hope you are as pleased as we are with the results of Book and Author 2011. Our sincere appreciation and thanks to all for jobs well done both large and small."

President’s Message Dear Members, While writing this column, outside on my patio, I come to reflect on what a wonderful year this has been for me, and for the chapter. Birds are chirping, cacti are blooming, and we sit here in our little paradise while the world is in turmoil. Through Brandeis University we are preparing the leaders for the next generation. Daniel Shapiro' 91 who will be the new US Ambassador to Israel, is a graduate of Brandeis. The new President of Brandeis, Fred Lawrence, continues to provide the excellent leadership of his predecessors. The Jewish community in Phoenix is in financial crisis. Our chapter helps those in need through a variety of projects: the Paradise Valley Emergency Food Bank, our "Knit a Mitzvah" project and we are planning more community service projects. At our Meet and Greet, Rabbi Darren Kleinberg mentioned that those Photo by Harvey Simon organizations that have a mission will be the ones that survive in this climate. Read our Mission Statement and you will understand why our chapter is stronger than ever, and continues to attract new members. Through the capable hands of Lori Roth and the programming committee, we have created programs that entertain and bring us closer together. We are nearing the membership goal set for us by National due to the efforts of Joyce Gordon and the membership team. Merrill Kalman and Sara Leopold have created more interesting study groups with more members participating than ever before. Our Book and Author Event was an outstanding success, and was so very ably led by Sue Karp and Carol Kern and their remarkable cohorts. Thanks to Phyllis Becker, our financial statements are in great shape. My executive assistant, Sue Adatto ably assisted in running our chapter, and Joanie Bream and Arlene Feldman kept our board minutes and meetings in order too. Past Presidents Iris Wigal, Sue Karp and Carol Kern have been there when we needed their expertise. For the rest of the board - your work and friendship are the elements that bind the chapter together. For those of you who are leaving their positions, I trust that you will be there to mentor our new Board. Paula Eckstein, we will miss you at the helm of our bulletin, have fun with your new twins-to-be. The wonderful Installation and Fashion Show coordinated by co-chairs Lori Roth and Pamela Fingerhut welcomed all our new and returning board members. It was fun to model the clothes provided by Michka and The Look. Our next bulletin will be July/August. I hope that you all have a wonderful, restful summer, while we prepare our activities for the coming season. Best Regards, Gladys

Thank You for being Thoughtful and Generous For many of us, the fabulous Book and Author Event is now a pleasant memory. But for others, it is just the beginning - the beginning of a life-time of reaping the rewards that a Brandeis education will bring. There will be young people rejoicing to hear news of their acceptance, and news of winning a coveted scholarship to the 'Deis. We will rejoice with scholarship winners, knowing that in small and large ways we are responsible for their changed and improved lives. We are grateful to all our donors for their contributions to the Scholarship Fund!

President Fredrick Martin Lawrence was inaugurated as Brandeis University's 8th President on March 31, 2011 at an investiture ceremony. During the ceremony, Dr. Lawrence "pledged to address both the uncertainties of the global future and the hopes of the campus community for new beginnings and an improved environment" Over 1,500 students, faculty, staff, trustees, friends, supporters and dignitaries attended the ceremony on campus, and hundreds more watched live over the internet. The week of festivities was culminated with the Inaugural Ball, where another 1,500 people celebrated in the Shapiro Gym. President Lawrence extended an invitation to view coverage of the event on BrandeisNOW. http://www.brandeis.edu/now/2011/march/investiture.html. The presentation includes a fantastic slide show of photos taken at the numerous events during Inauguration Week, as well as a video of his remarks.

... and Fare Well It has been my great pleasure to serve as Beat Editor for the past three years. I am stepping down so that I will be able to go, at a minute's notice, without regard to deadlines, to spend time with my daughter and her soon-to-arrive twin boys. Editing has been demanding but rewarding work. I have learned a great deal from the wise and generous women who helped me proof the Beat: Joanie Bream, Arlene Feldman and Carol Baine. They have mentored me to see the large picture, as well as the small, detailed nuances of our Chapter's newsletter. I enjoyed our interactions, and have come to value and admire them tremendously. I have had an opportunity to correspond with many of our Chapter's leaders and respect them all for their dedication and devotion to our cause. I have tried to emulate Carole Sherris: to be patient, flexible, and cheerful. Thank you Carole, for sharing your wonderful "Can-Do" spirit. I wish Bonnie Clewans all the best as she returns to the position of Beat Editor. Paula Eckstein

For A Memorable Membership Event April 8 did not only bring fabulous Arizona weather, it brought new and prospective members to the home of Joyce and Bruce Lefco. Thank you to Joyce and our creative membership team for a wonderful afternoon filled with information, friendship and tasty snacks.

Remember when your Teacher said: Use the Buddy System? Do you want to attend one of our fabulous Brandeis events, but feel you will be lost in the crowd? Not to worry! The membership committee will match you up with a "buddy" who will meet you, greet you and sit with you. If you are interested, please contact Joyce Gordon at 480-970-1062 / [email protected] It was good advice then, and it is good advice now!
