RALPH’S CORNER Gideon, A Mighty Man of Valor (Judges 6:11-18; 7:15-21) Gideon was called to fight against the Midianites and defeated them with only 300 men. He had a reputation of being a dangerous man to his enemies, as revealed by the conversation between two Midianites, and overheard by Gideon and his servant. (Judges 7:13-14). Gideon was a humble man: he did not care to take honor to himself. He heard the two Midianites talking about a dream. In giving the interpretation of the dream one of them said, this is nothing save the sword of Gideon. When Gideon told it to his men he said, the sword of Jehovah and Gideon. And the interpreter said; God has delivered Midian into the hand of Gideon. When Gideon reported this he said, “Jehovah hath delivered Midian into your hand, that is, into the hands of the 300” (Judges 7:14-15, 18, 20). But like many other good men who have rendered a fine service, Gideon, either in ignorance or through lack of respect for the authority of the law of God, stepped aside from the path of righteousness in his declining years. Sometime after the victory had been won Gideon took the gold earrings of the enemy and made an ephod. An ephod was a special garment, a coat, made for priests. The making of this ephod undoubtedly implied the introduction of a new system of worship contrary to that which was scripturally carried on in the tabernacle at Shechem. Certainly we know that “all Israel played the harlot after it.”

Today, good men who were true to the word in the past, have now turned away from the authority of the scriptures and have added things to worship that are not authorized in scriptures.
