2014 is a special anniversary in Berlin as it’s the 25th anniversary of the Wall coming down. We asked Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, how he felt visitors might best retrace the history of this edifice and which one place, for him, stands out as a place of remembrance…

Klaus Wowereit Governing Mayor of Berlin

What is your key message to the attendees of ITB Berlin 2014? I’d like to start by extending a very warm welcome to all of the visitors who are coming from all over the world to Germany’s capital city. Berlin has undergone incredible changes in the last quarter of a century. It’s a city where things are constantly happening, also thanks to the fashion designers, artists, and entrepreneurs from around the world who admire Berlin and have moved here. Berlin has a wealth of cultural attractions – from worldclass museums, opera houses, and countless theaters to an avant-garde cultural scene and many different subcultural trends in art, music, fashion, and clubs. At the same time, everyone here is free to be whatever he or she chooses. Difference is not only tolerated, but Hall 12 welcomed. That’s what makes Stand 101 Berlin so attractive.

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Welcomes You to His Wonderful City You can find traces of the Wall in various places – for instance, at the Martin-GropiusBau, Checkpoint Charlie, and East Side Gallery. However, the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse captures the horrors of the Wall in the most powerful way. This historical site in the middle of Germany’s capital city recalls the years of German division. The border between two Berlin boroughs, Wedding and Mitte – one in West Berlin and one in East Berlin – ran right along this street. The border created a unique situation here: the houses on the southern side of the street belonged to East Berlin, while the sidewalk in front of them was in West Berlin. The first victims of the Wall died on this street. This is also where the Church of Reconciliation was detonated, after the Wall left it inaccessible and isolated in the middle of the “no man’s land” between East and West. These events gave Bernauer Strasse tragic notoriety.

Staying Number One Europcar introduces new loyalty programme – and offers public “unlimited mobility” at ITB Berlin The way people rent cars is evolving rapidly. Sales channels are changing, and margins are tighter. At the helm of Europcar group, CEO Roland Keppler’s job is to ensure his company stays ahead of the game… and then some – as volumes were up in 2013 (at last report) – as was Average Revenue per Day. We asked Mr Keppler how the current trend towards car sharing is affecting his company’s global business and what he sees as being the general trend in this respect…

ITB BERLIN NEWS • Wednesday 5th March 2014

Car sharing is a response to changing customer expectations and thus a supplement to the rental car business. Given that Europcar wants to serve the different needs and desires of customers, we responded quite early to the new demands on urban mobility by participating in the mobility concept car2go. So we are well positioned in this market. Following the slogan “moving your way” each customer decides individually when and where he requires which vehicle and Europcar offers him the right solution. car2go applies to leisure customers and complements the mobility range of Europcar with a demand-minute or hourly rental in urban areas. With a special partner program for hired cars (Europcar partner card) Europcar offers an unlimited mobility to this new customer base. Car sharing is already and will certainly be a major topic on the car rental market over the next years, because of the growing customer group in urban areas. What key promotions or offers will you be promoting at ITB Berlin? Europcar’s key promotions will take place at the weekend by giving all visitors the opportunity to experience unlimited mobility. For this purpose, visitors can register for free to use car2go as well as

the Europcar partner card and receive an exclusive welcome bonus of 20 euro for the latter. Furthermore visitors benefit from the offer to make discounted car rental reservations at the fair stand. Europcar will also present its modern, high quality fleet by displaying an attractive vehicle and provide information about the topic “hire a car”. For this, an extra staff from the stations will be present at the booth. Car2go will be present with an electric smart. Throughout the fair, business and leisure customers can visit the Europcar lounge for informative conversations, in-depth consultations or even an animated exchange with our employees about our fleet, car rental and bookings.

Europcar is introducing its new loyalty program, Privilege, with new features aiming at rewarding the loyalty of both leisure individual customers and business frequent travellers. Membership is free and gives access to a number of rewards such as free weekend rewards as of the third leisure rental, money off coupon vouchers as of the second leisure rental and a whole new range of additional benefits including car category upgrades and a c c e s s t o E u r o p c a r ’s fast-track Ready service. Europcar’s Privilege also introduced a new top Tier level to reward the most loyal customers: the black card Privilege Elite VIP Tier, giving access to Priority Pass airport lounges worldwide and many other exclusive benefits.

What is your policy towards third party online booking agents and what do you think will be the trend over the next year or so? The importance of online booking agents will increase and every company will have to manage it through clear policies. For us, all channels are important. We are investing in our capability to approach directly the market through Internet and mobile.

How important is ITB Berlin as part of your marketing strategy? ITB Berlin is a very important part of the marketing strategy of Europcar. Because here international contacts and public relations can be fostered – for example with touristic partners, leisure customers, a large part of our franchisees and media representatives. The high brand awareness throughout the fair supports sustainable customer acquisition. Hall 9 Stand 123

Exclusive interview with Regine Sixt, Senior Executive VP, Sixt AG While Sixt rent-a-car, founded in Munich in 1912, is Europe’s oldest and most prestigious car rental company, it also aims to lead through innovation. We asked Regine Sixt what major new developments will be spearheading her company’s marketing push at ITB Berlin… We are quickly expanding our presence all over the world, particularly in North A m e r i c a . We r e c e n t l y opened in Las Vegas and will open several stations

for example in Texas, New Jersey and in Florida during the next months. So our US-customers as well as travellers from Canada, Latin America or

We are working tirelessly on creating as comfortable and flexible a travel experience for our customers as possible. In doing so, we are focusing on the latest technologies and close and trusting partnerships with high-performing providers in the tourism industry. We are continuously expanding these collaborations, not least because of our global expansion strategy. One area in which the sector is evolving rapidly is that of car sharing. How is this new trend affecting your global business… We are proud to announce that Sixt is definitely a pioneer and a playmaker in terms of car sharing. We are very much in tune with the times. Car sharing is becoming increasingly important, particularly for residents in large towns and cities who want to stay mobile at all times. This is reflected in user numbers: our premium car-sharing service DriveNow, which we offer together with our long-standing partner BMW, is growing more quickly than any other car sharing offer in Germany. This also shows the growing acceptance of this form of mobility. And this is why we will extend DriveNow to other countries. Car sharing is not just for private customers: our Sixt corporate car-sharing

Garuda Indonesia joins Skyteam On the opening day of ITB, Garuda Indonesia has became the second airline in Southeast Asia to join Skyteam, after Vietnam Airlines. Garuda’s success is due to its “Quantum Leap” strategic plan covering the period 20112015 which has seen the carrier acquiring new aircraft, expanding its network, revamping its inflight product with a new first and business class and offering additional airport services. In May, the Indonesian carrier will be launching flights to London Gatwick with three weekly frequencies in a Boeing 777-300ER. Garuda meanwhile will be beefing up its marketing activities in Europe this year, notably in the UK, where the airline recently announced it will be the official training kit partner of Liverpool Football Club from June 2014. “Last year we flew

How to fix overcrowded destinations and attractions with new intelligent visitor management technologies

EVENTS THAT DRIVE TRAVEL & TOURISM (EXPOS, SPORTS, ETC.)

Doug Lansky’s aim is clear: “Nobody should have to stand in a queue. People should be able to book in advance and plan a little bit, while still allowing for some spontaneity and serendipity.” While City Cards exist, they don’t, says Lansky, break-up the queues, get the people out of the queues and let people book at these places in advance. “If you can get everybody on board on the same system you can do all sorts of stuff that could only be done with what they call ‘Disney Magic’. But Lansky contends that DMOs need to figure out the “carrying capacity” of a destination per se. Destination Marketing Organisations, he says, need to change the way they do their job, and to coordinate flows of tourists between key attractions. “In my presentation, I put a picture of an iPad on the screen, with all the cool things you can do, and then an image of a

cardboard iPad with all the apps just drawn onto it. Then I say, ‘Imagine if they showed you an advert for this iPad, and when you got there they gave you the cardboard one.’ It’s essentially as crazy as what’s going on in the tourism industry. DMOs will advertise these gorgeous beaches and rainbows and whales jumping out of the water, and then you get there and the beaches are dirty and overcrowded, and they haven’t delivered on any promotional promise they’ve made. They need to fix the product, and manage it and do quality control.” “If you space-out tourists throughout the day, which can be done with advanced booking and virtual queuing, you can pump more than 20% more people through the same attractions,” quips Lansky. “More people can enjoy these places, they’ll enjoy them with less overcrowding, and they won’t have had to stand in line. Then if more people

Tourism takes its toll on destinations... ecologically and culturally. In many tourist hotspots, overcrowding even makes it unbearable for other tourists. Fortunately, innovative technological solutions for intelligent visitor management will soon be available. As part of the ITB Berlin Convention’s Destination Days, travel writer Doug Lansky reveals a breakthrough new system and explains how it can be implemented and why it will shape the future of tourism.

Vueling is in a special situation. Firstly, for the past five years, 50% of our bookings have come through our website and 50% through indirect channels and we’ve considered all along that this was a perfect balance – always around 50/50 – give or take a couple of points. We believe that we must continue to develop direct channel; it is very important to engage with passengers who are more price sensitive seeking the cheapest travel solution and avoiding extra charges that would be bundled through indirect channel. Indonesia – Tourism Up 9% in 2013

Hall 26 A Stand 120

Receipts rise by 10% to hit record US$10 billion At ITB Berlin, Indonesia is promoting ‘special interest’ tourism products ranging from ecotourism, heritage, sports, cruise, MICE, wellness, culinary and shopping. Last year Indonesia welcomed an all-time high of 8.8 million visitors, up by 9% over 2012-- four percentage points higher than the benchmark of world tourism growth. Tourism receipts rose by 10% to hit a record of US$10 billion. In addition, the WEF-Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013 considered Indonesia

to be the 70th most competitive tourism in the world out of 139 countries – up from 74th in 2011. Based on the Passenger Exit Survey (PES) of 2012, visitors from Europe enjoy nature in Indonesia, especially the beaches, leisure, culture and heritage. This supports the themes Indonesia are promoting at ITB Berlin and in Europe which are ‘special interest’ tourism products ranging from ecotourism, heritage, sports, cruise, MICE, wellness to culinary and shopping. The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has identified

five target countries in Europe (UK, France, The Netherlands, Germany and Russia) which contributed 10% to all visitor arrivals to Indonesia in 2013. The European feeder nation showing the fastest growth was France. Secondary destinations are a key part of the Indonesia tourism theme “Bali and Beyond” which has become an integral part of the Ministry’s Grand Strategy of “16 Target Markets; 7 Primary Products; 16 Priority Destinations.” The 16 target markets include countries in all continents but Africa.
