Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Contest Raises STEM Awareness Sourced from Samsung’s Hope for Children Newsletter

In April, 2013, Samsung held its third annual finale event to honor the five winning schools of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, a nationwide $1M competition designed to raise enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education among U.S. public middle and high school students. The five grand prize winners included Franklin High School, Los Angeles, CA; Leewood K-8 Center, Miami, FL; Forestview Middle School, Baxter, MN; Arrowhead Park Early College, Las Cruces, NM; and MS 88/Peter Rouget Middle School, Brooklyn, NY. Each of the winning schools received an estimated value of $110,000 in technology products such as smart boards, LED TVs, and laptops from Samsung and its corporate partners, Adobe Foundation, and DIRECTV. 2014 - Another exciting year Following the school calendar, the 2013-2014 Solve for Tomorrow contest launched in early September and received over 2,300 applications during the two-month entry period. The prize pool doubled this year, with the program awarding a total of $2 million dollars to U.S. public schools. This year, 91 employees volunteered to become Solve for Tomorrow State Ambassadors, who reached out to school districts in their respective states encouraging them to apply for the contest. In early November, 255 State Finalists were selected, five from each state plus Washington, D.C., and each school was awarded two Samsung Tabs. The company announced the 51 State Winners in early December, and those schools have received video kits to begin making their videos for the competition. The Top 15 National Finalists will be announced in March.

Stopping REDO: Understanding Flashing Error Codes on 2013 Plasma TVs By Chuck Russo, Assistant Manager, Training

To help you make accurate diagnoses of problems, Samsung’s 2013 Plasma TVs have built in error flashing codes which pinpoint the location of an error or problem. ✓✓ All errors are indicated by the Logic LED. ✓✓ 1 Flash [X,Y Driver Fail] and 3 Flash [Logic Board] are also indicated by the Front Panel LED. ✓✓ When there are no errors, the Normal Panel Operation Status LED blinks once every 0.5 seconds. Stopping REDO Stopping REDO Stopping Redo: Recognizing When Low Water Temperature is Not a Defect By K.T. Lee, Assistant Manager, HA Product Support

Models: WA400, WA422, WA456 Symptom: Customer complains that hot water is not being supplied in the hot/warm wash portion of the Normal or HE cycle or that the water is not hot enough. Causes: •• HE (High Efficiency) Wash Cycle Design •• Pre-Wash Cold Spray (to prevent clothing damage) •• Normal Cycle Design (mixing the hot/cold water supply) The lower temperature water is not a defect, but built into the design of the washer or the wash cycles. Consulting Guide During the Normal or HE cycles, the cycle’s “Hot/Warm” settings supply a mix of hot and cold water. The customer might think that the unit isn’t supplying hot water, but this is how the Normal cycle and HE cycle are designed. For all other cycles, the “Hot/Warm” setting supplies hot water to match the customer’s temperature setting. If the customer is unsatisfied with the temperature of the water used in the Normal or HE cycle, suggest that the customer use other cycles.. Water temperatures (*depending on the house water supply temperature) Heavy Duty cycle: 90°F to 100°F (32-38°C) Normal cycle: •• Warm water: 73°F (about 23°C) •• Hot water: 70°F to 80°F (21-27°C) All other cycles supply hot water at 100°F to 140°F (38°C to 60°C).

***All Cycles start with a spray of Cold water to prevent damage to clothing.

To test, use a cell phone with Bluetooth capabilities and SCAN for devices. If Bluetooth communication is working properly, “DTVBluetooth” will appear on the phone. If not, suspect that the Main PCB or Bluetooth module is defective.

Leveling Refrigerators and Refrigerator Doors By Dorian Rua, Content Developer, Product Support

Leveling Refrigerator Doors A properly leveled fridge door saves energy and keeps the food inside fresher longer. If a door is not level, it will leak cold air causing the temperature inside the fridge to rise which in turn causes the compressor to run more frequently.

Leveling Refrigerators To level a refrigerator, follow these steps: 1. Unplug the fridge. 2. Gain access to the fridge leveling legs located on the lower corners of the unit. The front legs may be behind a panel that covers the adjusting levers. You must remove the panel before proper leveling can occur. 3. Place a level on the top front edge of the fridge. 4. Turn the Control Lever on the adjustable legs using a flat blade screwdriver, adjustable pliers, or by hand. Turn clockwise to raise the fridge or counterclockwise to lower it. Having a helper push against the upper portion of the fridge may let you turn the levers by hand. Otherwise, use the adjustable pliers or flat head screwdriver.

Background: If the water that is supplied during the initial water fill is too hot, it will cause an increase of air pressure in the tub. The increased pressure will cause water to be forced out of the bottom front corners of the tub during the first few rotations of the spray arms. After the first few rotations of the spray arm, the pressure will equalize and the water will stop dripping from the corners.
