Business Studies/ Pre-Garda Studies

Business Studies/ Pre-Garda Studies

Sports & Recreation

I joined Ballybunion College of Further Education in September 2011 to study Pre-Garda studies. From the minute I walked into the college on the first day I was made to feel extremely welcome by all the tutors there and I made some amazing friends that I am still in contact with today. My long term goal is to become a member of An Garda Síochána and this particular course covered a lot of modules that were ideally suited to the job. At the time I was unemployed and there seemed to be no intention of lifting the ban on recruitment. However, during the course I applied to be a Garda Reserve and was successful in my application. All the modules were very interesting to study and the tutors made it very easy for us especially since a lot us had been out of education for a number of years. After I finished this course with ten distinctions, I applied for a job with Aer Lingus and I know my results increased my chances of looking like a prospective employee. I have been working with Aer Lingus for the past year as well as being a Garda Reserve and I couldn't be happier. Although I'm not ruling out joining An Garda Síochána in the future I am having the time of my life at the moment and it's all thanks to my PLC course.

After successfully completing my Leaving Certificate, I applied for a Fetac Level 5 Pre-Garda/Business studies course at Ballybunion College of Further Education. The modules were very interesting and the tutors gave me a lot of support with the assignments. As part of the course, I did work experience in Retail Security in Dunnes Stores. I found that while I was completing my work experience, I gained a lot of useful experience and this encouraged me to seek work in the security industry. After successfully completing the PLC course in May 2012, I then did two short training courses in Dublin. The courses were in static security training and supervisory security management. These two courses together with the PLC course were sufficient to enable me to get work in the security industry. I applied for a vacant position with Synergy Security Solutions and was successful in both the interview and written report exercise. I have been employed with Synergy since September 2012. I am very keen and eager and have ambitions to join management in the future.

I have always been actively involved in local sports and was very interested in following in a career in this sector. I enrolled in a PLC course in Ballybunion College of Further Education in September 2011 to study Sports & Recreation. I can honestly say I was welcomed warmly by all the tutors and made some very close friends. I found the tutors extremely helpful when I needed advice or guidance on assignments. I personally feel this course gave me a great insight into the Sports & Leisure sector and enhanced my interest in pursuing this career further. I achieved distinctions in all of the modules studied which made it possible for me to apply successfully to the IT Tralee. I am currently in my third year of a three-year Health & Leisure degree course and hope to specialise in Nutrition. I would strongly recommend anyone interested in pursuing a career in this sector to enrol in the PLC course in Ballybunion College of Further Education to obtain an overall view of the industry to ensure it’s right for you.
