Creating Career Choices

Helping to save the planet

Level 2 and Level 3 Public Services students met with veteran service personnel from the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, the Army Reserve, Retained Dorset Fire & Rescue Service and Dorset Police Special Constabulary to learn from their vast experience, totalling around 130 years!

Conservation conscious students completed their annual Chesil Beach clean culminating in the biggest hoard yet. Over fifty students from Foundation Learning courses, Army Preparation and uniformed public services courses joined forces with environment campaigners Raw Foundation in the world’s war against its biggest ecological enemy – disposable plastic.

Student Josh Bailey said... “I’d never really thought of the Army Reserves so now it’s definitely something to think about. Ultimately I’d like to become a personal trainer in the Army, so it would be excellent experience.”

Rare Breeds Accreditation Our Animal Park was accredited as an Approved Conservation Farm Park by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. It now boasts Bagot Goats, Portland Sheep and Saddleback Pigs alongside lots of farmyard favourites. One of the Bagot Goats, Vinney Blue, has gained the coveted position of mascot for The Thomas Hardye School!

Head Animal Technician & Instructor Barbara Holden said... “It’s an important link for Vinney to be the school’s mascot as the students can learn how to handle and rear goats whilst promoting the breed.”

Mucky Business raises money for Air Ambulance The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture students raised an impressive £1912 for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance in their annual muckspreading charity challenge – the ‘Muckathon’. They spread, ploughed and cultivated 55 acres of land over two days using machinery and equipment kindly loaned by agricultural dealers, contractors, farmers and the College.

Student Hilary Hansford said... ‘’Everyone worked well as a team ensuring the event was a great success, and raising money for a very worthy cause.’’

Agricultural Student of the Year Georgie Cossins won the NFU Agricultural Student of the Year Competition. The sixteen participating students, all studying the second year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture, competed in tasks covering livestock, machinery and estate skills. A theory test was followed by an interview with a panel of judges including representatives from sponsors C&O Tractors and the NFU.

Student Success in UK Skills Floristry Competition Emily Moore and Laura Bettany scooped prizes in the south west regional heat of the UK Skills Floristry competition. Against the clock competitors produced a shoulder corsage from materials selected by the judges, together with a modern floral arrangement.

Course Tutor Tracey Nadin said...

Apprenticeships Awards

Finding the Hidden Edge Business students helped to host ‘The Hidden Edge’ Business Breakfast at the College, aimed at helping small businesses to get solutions to their own ‘Wicked Issues’.

Guest, Carol Bentley, said... “It was encouraging to see how engaged the students were and the useful contributions they made to our discussions.”

“We are very proud of our students. All produced excellent designs and were professional throughout. It’s such a great opportunity for them to showcase their talents.”

Actor Edward Fox said... “We will go away from here thinking of the impact of inspiring the young for lifetime occupations and lifetime happiness, which you can see is a reality here.”

The Apprenticeship Awards evening was a great success with a record number of Apprentices and employers attending the celebration. Apprentices received awards in a diverse range of subjects including Animal Care, Arboriculture, Equine, Environmental Conservation, Horticulture, Butchery, IT, Retail & Customer Service, and Active Leisure & Learning. During 2013, the college saw a 25% growth in numbers from 2012, with a success rate of 82% against the national average of 72%.

New Glasshouses Award winning actor Edward Fox and his wife Joanna David officially opened two purpose-built state-of-the-art glasshouses for the Horticulture academy. The £850,000 project replaced two outdated polytunnels, a non-operational smaller greenhouse and other buildings.

Equal Opportunities At Kingston Maurward College we believe that everyone, regardless of whether they are on College premises or away from them, have the right to be valued as individuals and have the equality of opportunity regardless of race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief, marital status, or age, and that they will not be disadvantaged by any conditions or requirements that cannot be shown to be justified. Some students may need additional support in order to pursue their course, and the College seeks to provide this wherever possible. We like to think that the students play an active role with the staff in supporting equal opportunities by treating everybody with respect and in reporting discriminatory behaviour. The College wishes to ensure it complies with the requirements of The Code of practice for Further and Higher Education (Equality Act 2010). 107
