Amalgamation of FETAC, HETAC, IUQB + NQAI

On the 6th November 2012, Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) was established as a new integrated agency (replacing the Further Education and Training Awards Council, the Higher Education and Training Awards Council and the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland and incorporating the functions of the Irish Universities Quality Board). The establishment of a single unified agency to assure the quality of qualifications and of learners’ experience of education and training at all levels in Ireland will make it easier for employers and others to make sense of Irish qualifications, including within a global context. FETAC, HETAC, IUQB and NQAI believe that this move strengthens the focus on high quality learning experiences across all education and training provision nationally. The strength of current qualifications and quality assurance systems will grow, opening up new opportunities for people to engage and succeed in learning.

Fees

Note that an Application Administration Fee of €20 now applies to all applications. This is a non refundable payment.

QQI Points

The CAO score QQI applicants on their best 8 modules from a Major Award where applicants are eligible for consideration. Please see section on QQI Links Scheme on page 17 for more specific information. Applicants should consult HEI literature to establish specific QQI level 5 and 6 requirements.

14

Lcfe PROSPECTUS 2017-18

In addition, LCFE has also negotiated advanced entry progression opportunities for holders of QQI Level 6 Awards with various IOTs. Details of these arrangements are on the relevant programme pages.

Any information disclosed by the Garda Central Vetting Unit may be shared with the appropriate decision making personnel in prospective work experience organisations. It is the learner’s responsibility to ensure that all information is correct, as any omission will mean a delay in the processing of the application.

English Language Assessment

All applicants whose first language is not English will be asked to complete an English Language Assessment. This assessment takes place in May and again in August. The purpose of this assessment is to

ascertain the applicant’s competence level in relation to the programme requirements. Limerick College of Further Education has links with ESOL @ FET Centre, Kilmallock Road Campus. QQI Links Scheme National Framework of Qualifications All QQI Awards have been placed on the National Framework of Qualifications. It is easy to see at a glance where the Award you wish to pursue stands on the 10-Level Framework. QQI is devising a new ‘Awards Plan’ which will lead to the migration of existing award standards and also, the development of new Award areas to the Common Awards System (CAS). Currently, the process is an on-going one. All QQI programme content information in this Prospectus is correct at the time of going to press. Limerick College of Further Education accepts no responsibility for any changes which occur and affect any existing programme. QQI Links Scheme Progression to Institutes of Technology, Universities and Other Colleges QQI: Further Education and Training Awards Council - Quality and Qualifications Ireland. HETAC: Higher Education and Training Awards Council.

Note: Progression to Universities and other Colleges from QQI programmes is possible through the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS). For entry into Institutes of Technology from September 2013, all QQI level 5 and QQI level 6 awards will be scored to deliver a maximum of 400 CAO points. Scoring: A minimum of 120 credits must be presented. Points will only be calculated if the required awards and/ or modules are presented. Starting with Distinctions, then merits, then passes, add all the credits until a cumulative value of 120 is reached. Ignore any credits above 120. For the credits that you are including, multiply the credit value by the grade weighting, i.e. multiply by 3 in the case of a Distinction, by 2 in the case of a Merit, by 1 in the case of a Pass. Add these scores. Multiply the total by 10, then divide the answer by 9. If you get a decimal place, round your result to the nearest whole number.

This number is set to grow significantly as LIT and LCFE have now formalised their links across all programmes, which will help to create smooth and seamless pathways for learners. Such pathways will operate through the CAO for learners entering first year. Learners successfully completing QQI Certificate Level 5 with LCFE will be offered entry to LIT programmes based on this collaboration agreement. Learners who complete Advanced Certification Level 6 with LCFE may apply for advanced entry straight into second year for linked programmes. Currently, LIT learners coming through from LCFE are attending a diverse range of programmes across all disciplines. These discipline areas are set to grow under the collaboration agreement. Our Experience Limerick College of Further Education (LCFE) has transformed itself over the last 54 years. It started out in 1963 as a second-level vocational school known as the ‘School of Commerce’ and is now a thriving College of Further Education with three campuses in the Mid-West Region. We have grown from humble beginnings in the 1960’s to one of the largest colleges of further education in the country with over 3.500 enrolments each year. This transformation did not happen by accident. It happened because of the dedication and sheer hard work of the staff who have passed through its doors supported by a progressive and equally hard-working VEC/ETB.

Minister launches college awareness week

Former Minister of Eduation, Ms. Jan O’Sullivan T.D., visited Limerick College of Further Education to launch LCFE’s College Awareness Week.

The Childcare Department offers two courses at QQI Level 5. The courses encourage and promote the child’s holistic care and development. The learner will understand the importance of nurturing the child’s potential, as required by the Legislative frameworks of Síolta and Aistear. QQI Level 6 gives the learner the opportunity to further develop their personal and professional skills onto the managerial level in a range of child care settings. The Healthcare Department is very proactive in meeting the ever changing health and social care needs in public, private and voluntary organisations. The learners develop a range of skills to care for different age profiles of the patient/client. There is a choice of relevant courses to suit the learner’s career opportunities and for progression to further training/ higher education.

64

SCHOOL OF childcare + healthcare

As an NDP-funded programme, there are no tuition fees. Learners, however, are liable for registration and examination fees. Additionally, learners are expected to supply prescribed study materials. Means-tested Maintenance Grants are available.

Work Experience Work experience is a mandatory part of all Level 5 and Level 6 programmes and learners are required to participate. It offers a valuable opportunity to further develop skills and gain an understanding of the workplace. All Childcare and Social / Healthcare related courses require the learners to be Garda Vetted, prior to starting their work experience placement. This is completed by Limerick and Clare ETB.

Communications Communications is a mandatory part of all Level 5 and Level 6 programmes and learners are required to participate. It is a necessary skill which is transferable to both personal and work life where benefits can be gained in dealing with everyday experiences.

Garda Vetting Limerick College of Further Education offers a number of educational programmes that require learners to undertake placements with external agencies which will bring them into contact with the public and in which they will assume positions of trust. To ensure the protection of the public, and justify public trust and confidence, the College is committed to ensuring that only suitable candidates are allowed to undertake these programmes. LCFE uses the Garda Siochana National Vetting Bureau to assess the suitability of such applicants. For 2017 entry, Garda vetting by LCFE will be required for all learners on programmes in the School of Childcare and Healthcare.

LEARNER TESTIMONIAL After taking a year out to go travelling, I decided to return to education and enrolled in the Pre-Nursing programme in Limerick College of Further Education. This programme taught me everything I needed to know about working in a health care setting, while the work experience gave me the practical skills to work in a patient care environment. My experience at the college was an excellent one, the teachers gave me huge encouragement, the modules were interesting and I made some great friends along the way. The one year duration of the programme enabled me to consider many future career options, and during the year I got offered a place to study Nursing in the UK and various work opportunities as a care assistant in my area – all which would have not been possible without the completion of the Pre-Nursing programme. I’m now studying Occupational Therapy in the University of Limerick. I have no doubt that my time in LCFE contributed to me obtaining a place on this programme, and has laid the foundations for me to pursue a future career in health care. Eleanore O’Gorman

LEARNER TESTIMONIAL I can safely speak for my class APS1 when I say this year in Limerick College of Further Education has been a year to remember. Our class ended up been so close by the end of the year. Of programme we had our ups and downs but with a little bit of encouragement from a friend or a teacher, we always landed back on our feet. The support from our teachers throughout the year has being amazing, they were always very supportive and approachable. APS1 possibly have been through a lot more than any other class in the college. We shared laughter, close bonds and jokes. However, we also shared bereavement. Yet again the class and teachers supported each other through thick and thin. When we took one step backwards, we always jumped two steps forward and it made us stronger as people. On behalf of APS1, I would like to thank all the teachers for their support and hard work they put into the year. This year will never be forgotten. Niamh Gormley

LEARNER TESTIMONIALS In my mid-30’s, I got the opportunity to complete the Beauty and Complementary Therapies programme in LCFE. It was a 2-year full-time programme. We studied for the following qualifications in ITEC and CIBTAC Diplomas in the 1st year: Indian Head Massage, Body Therapy and Aesthetics. We also did Work Experience in Beauty Salons. In 2nd year we prepared for Diplomas (ITEC and CIBTAC) in Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Hopi Candles and Electrical Epilation. Our two years’ hard work finished with extra exams to achieve the most prestigious award CIDESCO which is recognised all over the World. The programme was run by fantastic teachers who passed on their knowledge to us and who were passionate about their different areas of expertise. I can give some advice to everyone who would like to attend this programme: have passion for all of the subjects, like working for people and work hard from the very beginning and you will achieve all of the rewards as I did.

During my two-year Hairdressing programme taken at LCFE, I acquired so many skills in all areas of hairdressing, ranging from cutting to colouring to upstyling hair. I also gained great knowledge of the theoretical part of the syllabus. Also, work experience which is part of the programme gave me great salon experience and preparation for the industry. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in LCFE, as it gave me a solid foundation to pursue a hairdressing career.

LEARNER TESTIMONIALS With a naïve yet enthused curiosity of artistic practices, I began a two year voyage of discovery in LCFE studying art, craft and design. Throughout that time I was thoroughly encouraged to explore a range of artistic mediums. Having completed my informative and enjoyable two years in LCFE I was further inspired by the supportive staff to continue my studies and thus entered into the second year program in Ceramics in Limerick School of Art and Design. Since then I completed my BA in Ceramic Design and I am currently finishing my Professional Masters of Education in Art Craft and Design with Digital Media. Years later I am still linked with LCFE having returned as an evening tutor in ceramic practice. I have remained close with friends I made while learning in LCFE. LCFE gave me a very supportive and encouraging start in my career to date, and I would not hesitate in offering it my highest recommendation. Ciara Normoyle

a great opportunity to be creative

The training I received at LCFE gave me a more professional approach to broadcasting, from the use of recording equipment to preparing for interviews and effective audio and script editing, it has all been of benefit to me. I now do a lot of court reporting, so having that grasp of the law and legal concepts has helped me to make more informed decisions about broadcast content. I am grateful to all the staff at Limerick College of Further Education for helping me to achieve my goal.
