MORAGA COUNTRY CLUB

BOARD NEWS / GENERAL CLUB News from the President… September is here! Most of us remember this as the month when school begins again – of course for most, it has already started. There is always some excitement in starting a new year, seeing friends and getting new teachers. It is a time when mothers give a sigh of relief from the summer activities. To most of us, September meant the end of summer and once again "hitting the books." Even though most of us have passed those school years, we are faced with another kind of studying which deserves our serious attention. Moraga and citizens of our Country Club are being asked to consider two very different and somewhat complex voter referendums. I encourage members of MCC to study the two proposed Open Space Initiatives that they will face in our November 4th local election. It is to the benefit of MCC members to be an informed voter. The documents are lengthy but well worth your time to review. For your convenience I have included websites that will direct you to the MOSPRO and the MOSO 2008 Initiatives, (Measures J and K, respectively) as well as a source to refresh your memory of the Open Space Ordinance that was approved by Moraga citizens, and which has served our community since 1986. It is clear; the adoption of one of these new initiatives will have a significant and lasting impact upon the future of Moraga, and naturally Moraga Country Club. It is important that all Moraga citizens be well informed before casting their vote in November. That is our homework for this month. Two new initiatives: www.Moraga.ca.us Look under: "Ballot Initiatives for Open Space" Please read both proposals as well as the "9212" reports. These are also available at MCC website: www.moragacc.com For a refresher of the 1986 Moraga Open Space ordinance which has served our community for the past 22 years, please Google "Moraga Open Space 1986" and look for: "Guidelines for Interpreting and Implementing the Moraga Open Space Initiative" Additionally, our Clubhouse Improvement Committee (CIC) has been hard at work in organizing the upcoming Ambassador Meetings to get information out to the membership about their proposal for the new clubhouse, including the financing options. Numerous members have generously offered to open their homes to their neighbors and fellow MCC members to address member concerns, answer questions and provide the CIC's vision for their proposal. You will be receiving an invitation to attend a neighborhood meeting at one of our Ambassador’s home in the next few weeks. Our goal is to have every MCC member be an informed voter when the Clubhouse ballot is presented. See you around the Club! Janice Kolbe President

Second, our Thursday and Saturday NCGA teams had successful runs during the season. The Thursday team (captained by Rick Voigt) had a great run and came up just short in making the playoffs whereas the Saturday team (captained by Bret Brodowy) made the playoffs only to see it come to an end in a first round loss to Contra Costa Country Club in late August. Thanks to Rick and Bret for their efforts in managing the NCGA team play league, I’m sure everyone appreciates it and will vote for you guys to do it again. Great job guys!!!!

Finally, I also wanted to say congratulations to Scott Reeves (Golf Shop Assistant) for passing his PGA players ability test in August. He’s now on his way into the PGA professional management program. Good job Scott! Jason Woodruff , Director of Golf

TENNIS Welcome to beautiful September. Once again looking back over the summer activities, what a great summer we had. It was such fun to sit back, listen and observe all the activity that took place this summer with our juniors in and around the courts. The juniors have so much fun which in turn makes it fun for the staff. What a great group of children that we get to share a little of our time with for a couple months. Stead Open First things first. Thank you to The Stead Family of Fine Automobiles, and presenting sponsor, Barons Jewelers, for providing us with another great week at the Stead Open. We saw sunny skies every day by noon and the matches were great to watch. The week started out with a beautiful Monday night gathering put on by Mark and organized by Sally Whittaker and Nancy Engberg. The MCC members who were kind enough to volunteer in one way or another, where invited as a “Thank You” It was a great party and positive beginning to another great week at the “Stead Open”! We had a wonderful night for the “Thursday Night Featured Match.” We had 170 for the BBQ plus many individuals who just came to watch. It was a gorgeous night for the event. We would like to thank Tom Pappas for doing such a exceptional job in coordinating the prizes and the raffle for the Thursday Night Featured Match. Proceeds from the raffle went to the “Youth Tennis Advantage.” Mark reported a full draw (128) which meant long days and late night play. Once again, Barbara Blum and Ken, as co-Desk Chairman, ran another flawless Stead Open week. With so many people to thank, we will start with Suzanne Alexander, Carol Derry, Sally Whittaker, Denise Acker and Dot and Jerry Ardissone. We couldn’t do without the help of Mario, Yolanda and Napoleon. The restaurant also had another busy week of taking care of the food requests from our guests and members. All in all it was a great event!! Last but not least, a big thank you to all our volunteer court monitors, members who housed players and the baked goods brought in by our members. We had such an outpouring of volunteers for everything. A great big hug to everyone. Here are the results for the week: Ladies Singles : Maria Sanchez Def. Bernard would like to say a special Thank You to all the junior Ball Boys and Ball Girls for the great job they did with the finals on Saturday August 9th and Sunday, August 10th. With 4 finals on Sunday, it was sizzling hot weather and a full day for our BALL Boys and Girls. Bernard worked with these juniors throughout the summer to prepare them for the Stead Open. Thank You to the following juniors. Holly Bohuslav, Luke Bohuslav, Kevin Buckley, Danny Cardiff, Ryan Cardiff, Matt Ciminol, Chase Corallo, Nicholas Elliott, Claire Faulkner, Nicole Neason, Emily Orwig, Matthew Yeh, Nicholas Yeh . It was brought to our attention that several people commented on how professional our Ball boys and Ball girls were. On the same subject, the Stead Open referee said how impressed he was with our juniors and what an outstanding job they had done. We knew that but it’s always nice to hear. A special Thank You to John Marvel who put together a Web Site for the Stead Open www.Steadopentennis.com What a nice addition it was for the tournament. CLUBHOUSE UPDATE

We are pleased to report that the Clubhouse Implementation Committee (CIC) has implemented something called an “Ambassador Program”. The Ambassador Program will be an outreach to the members where “Ambassadors” (members who have agreed to serve in this role) will hold informational meetings in their homes in small groups. The goal of the program is to impart information about the clubhouse replacement, receive feedback, answer questions and dispel misinformation, if any. We hope to reach each and every voting member of the club, both homeowner and golf associate members. If you are a homeowner or golf associate, please anticipate receiving a call from an Ambassador in early September. Meetings will be scheduled throughout September and possibly into early October. At the small gatherings a short DVD will be shown and a member of the CIC will be present for discussion, questions and answers. It is the goal of the CIC to bring the new Clubhouse proposal to the membership for a vote sometime later in the fall. Members of the CIC are: Harry Fish, Don Maddison, Rick Nedell, Dick Olsen, Matt Rei, Helen Sullivan, Larry Thompson and Tom Engberg. Please feel free to call any of them with any questions.

GENERAL CLUB / TURF TALK TURF TALK By Luis Ballesteros

TURF Lawns will be mowed on a weekly basis .

Golf Course Condition There are some localized wet spot on the fairways that occurred due to the extremely change of weather in the last few weeks. These areas have been monitor soon as they were identified. The maintenance staff will continue making slow progress in aerating localized dry areas in the fairways, around tees and greens. We will utilize a small walk behind aerator with ¾ hollow tines to punch holes, remove cores, apply seed, fertilizer and sand top dress. This procedure will to improve turf density and playing surface. The golf course will engage in the following activities during the month of October.

• • • •

Greens aerification is scheduled for the first week of October. Tees and approaches will be aerify during the first week of October Fairway aerification and sand top dressing will follow during the second week of October. Greens surround aerification will take place the last week of October

Each spring and fall, golf courses all over the world aerify their greens, turning, what was yesterday a great putting surface, into sand covered, bumpy and slow greens. The question is always “the greens were so good why we punched them?” If we did not aerify the greens at least twice per year, we will notice a decline in the putting surface with in a few months. Aerification allow us to performed many task during a short period of time. It allows us to remove organic matter, add soil amendments, relive soil compaction and smooth the putting surface. The greens at Moraga Country Club are considered by many some of the best greens around and we take pride in the product that we offer to our members.

Should you have any questions regarding the golf course aerification please feel free to contact me.

September 2008

Edging of lawns will be done every other week. Any lawn areas showing signs of stress will look healthy again as cooler weather approaches. Any lawn areas not responding will be prepared for reseeding. Shrub and Groundcover The pruning and detailing of shrubs and groundcover are routinely done based on a schedule provided in the back cover. EBMUD has imposed a water restrictions The water restriction imposed is a 30% reduction on all common landscape areas and 19% on all residential landscape areas. We programmed our clocks to meet these water restriction requirements. We have been working on watering plant material based on watering needs. For example, established plant material, drought tolerant plant material and shaded areas have a lower water need. Areas that have direct sun would have a much higher water need. We have been retrofitting our overhead spray heads to a low volume bubbler. This is a much more efficient irrigation system that enables us to water directly into the plant material root zone area. If you notice irrigation running excessively please report it at the front office. Chemicals in our Landscape We are cutting our grass clippings and recycling them back into the soil grass areas. This recycling technique is a great benefit to the landscape. It provides an even and weekly fertilization back into our landscape grass areas. This, in turn, reduces the amount of chemicals in our environment. We turned our mulching efforts toward our surrounding slopes to keep control of weeds and add a groomed appearance. This, in turn, reduces the need to spray herbicides or apply pre-emergence. Other methods are being discussed and implementation would depend on its acceptability with little to no difference toward the landscape appearance. Work Order Request Request will be scheduled in a efficient matter or based on their urgency. -Jon Plotnick, ValleyCrest Maintenance

From the Moraga Women’s Golf Association July 5, 2008 Dear Friends: Our women’s golf association is planning this year’s RALLY FOR THE CURE ®event “LET’S GIVE BREAST CANCER THE BOOT!” with a women’s golf invitational tournament and silent auction on Wednesday, September 24th. RALLY FOR THE CURE ®, a breast cancer awareness campaign, is the nation’s largest grassroots women’s golf program. In 1982 two sisters promised each other to end breast cancer forever. It has evolved into the Susan G. Komen For the Cure, a non profit organization. The members of our Women’s Golf Association at Moraga Country Club are strongly committed to do our part in spreading this message of breast cancer awareness and research in the hope that more women will be successful in defeating this killer disease. We hope you will help us with our event. Please consider making a donation to our silent auction and to our sponsorship opportunities. In kind donations are welcome. Suggested items may include: tickets to sporting events, theatrical tickets, hotel packages, spa packages, golf packages, dining and store gift certificates. Your name will be featured in our program and in our club newsletter that is sent to all of the Moraga Country Club members, for any donations we receive. Sponsorship opportunities include tee/green sponsors for companies and individuals and a Memory and Celebration placard to honor the name of the person you would like to recognize. “Tee/green” sponsor signs will be prominently displayed on the course. The Memory and Celebration List will be prominently displayed at the Clubhouse. The money raised from this event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure organization. Thank you for taking the time to consider our request. Please feel free to call me if you would like any more information. Sincerely,

Back by popular demand, based on your phone calls and inquiries to the office, the topic of Trash Bins is back!

This month meet Napoleon Montoya from our Housekeeping staff. Napoleon, or ‘Napu’ as we call him, first came to work at Moraga Country Club in 1994 and stayed until 1997. We cut back staff during one season, and Napu found other employment. As the Club grew and staffing needs increased we sought him out and asked him to return. Luckily for us he accepted and he has been back at MCC since May of 2005.

Quoted from the Rules and Regulations for Moraga Country Club: “E5.3 Garbage cans must be stored out of view at the end of the day of collection and not before 4:00p.m. the afternoon before collection.” There are three areas addressed in this section; 1. 2.

When he was not employed here, Napu worked as a parking valet and as Garage Manager at AAMCO. Here at the Club he is one of our very valuable Housekeepers. Napu can be seen around the clubhouse as early as 5:00 a.m. making coffee, uncovering the pool, cleaning the locker rooms and dining room, cleaning the restrooms on #4 and #12 as well as the maintenance trailer offices, restrooms and break room. They all sparkle and shine because of Napu’s meticulous work. Very well-liked by his co-workers and members alike, he has never missed a day of work since he has been with us!

3.

Trash bins are not to be placed into the street prior to 4:00 PM on Tuesday. Trash bins need to be pulled out of the street and stored out of sight by midnight on Wednesday evening. Trash bins are to be stored out of sight from the roadway, with the exception of item 1 and 2 above. Fellow residents should be able to drive our streets and walk on our sidewalks without looking at trash bins.

The Waste Management trucks which come into our community on Wednesday for trash pick up use automatic equipment for trash pick up. If you leave additional trash outside of your bin they will not pick up unless you made prior arrangements with their company to do so. The trash company needs three feet between bins in order to pick them up. If the bins are close together or too close to parked cars the drivers will not get out of the truck to move them in order to pick them up. They will drive away without picking up your garbage. If for unknown reasons your trash is not picked up on Wednesday call Waste Management and they will pick up on Thursday. This is why you will see some bins on the roadway Thursday.

Originally from Silamg, Cavite, Philippines, Napu and his four brothers and sisters now reside in the United States. Napu lives with his wife, Lou, in Concord. Their son and four daughters, ages 26, 25, 23, 20 and 18, remain in the Philippines studying or pursuing careers in commerce, nursing and tourism. Napu and Lou speak with them every day Community Patrol will note trash bins out early and not through Global Link and visit them as often as pos- put away by midnight Wednesday evening. Citation sible. letters are mailed to the homeowners. For fun Napu likes to play hoops at Heather Farms and watch action movies. He takes his wife to and from work and occasionally to the mall (good husband!). He is a Lakers' basketball fan, and also enjoys watching boxing. Favorite food? Shrimp !!

Thanks Napu, for all you do, and for being such a great part of our team!

In the event of a damaged trash bin merely call Waste Management and they will make arrangements to replace the broken bin. When that occurs please call Community Patrol and let us know. It will take them up to 72 hours in normal situations to replace the defective trash bin. We like to be able to inform neighbors of the circumstances, if they call.
