New Volunteer Coordinator Karen Payne, a new board member, is our new Volunteer Coordinator. Karen will be contacting the volunteers and seeing that docent scheduling and special needs of the Arts Center are met. In addition to acting as docents, volunteers are needed for an assortment of jobs including hosting exhibit receptions, Sunny Point activities, and many other occasions.

The mission of YCAC is to enrich the quality of life of Finger Lakes residents, artists, and visitors by providing opportunities for active participation in the arts.

An information session for potential new volunteers is planned for January 30th from 1:00 PM to 3PM at the Art Center. Call the Arts Center at 315-536-8226 or Karen at 315-5366120 to confirm your attendance.

To this end, we plan, promote, and develop art programs and projects; coordinate, schedule, and publicize events; develop & maintain physical facilities.

With our successful move to Main Street, we need more volunteers. If you are able to help, please call the Arts Center at 315-536-8226 or Karen at 315-536-6120 to indicate your interest. As the retiring volunteer coordinator,

tured artists of 2013 transform the exhibit space as “Material Girls” hang their works. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 17, from 3-5 PM, sponsored by Hunt Country Vineyards. Among the “Material Girls” will be a quilter, embroiderer, painter with fabric, painter with machine stitched scenes...and to kick it up a little, a potter who uses fabrics! Read how on page 4. The show will continue until March 18.

Material Girls—Opening Sunday, Feb. 17, 3-5 PM The Formal Garden by Eve Bothelo Using a technique known as “thread painting,” I create my miniature landscapes on a sewing machine, which is my drawing tool. My embroideries begin with designs on silk fabric, hand-painted and airbrushed using silk dyes. Next come trees, foliage, and flowers, all created with two or three basic stitches: the straight stitch, the whipstitch, and the ziz-zag stitch. The silk dyes provide a lustrous background and the embroidery threads add rich texture to each piece.

After the Rain by Lynne Feldman I have been a painter in oils for the past 40 years. For twenty five years now my studio has been located an old factory building in Rochester, New York above what was once Fabrics and Findings, a wonderful fabric store located in it. Often when I had spent too many hours contemplating the canvas, I would seek inspiration by roaming the store below looking at all the wonderful colors, textures and designs. I have also always loved fabric. It seemed like such a natural evolution for me to eventually incorporate the actual fabric itself into my work along with the painting. I see the technique that I do now as a kind of painting with fabric.

More “Material Girls” Embroidery by Jean Hubsch Jean Hubsch’s main areas of interest are with Hardanger, a form of embroidery traditionally worked with white thread on white even-weave cloth, using counted thread and drawn thread work techniques. She also enjoys Brazilian embroidery and canvas work. Her embroidery was recently displayed at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport. She is an active member of the Embroiderers Guild of America, Corning NY Chapter. Her needlework experience spans more than 25 years, the last 15 including teaching to area Embroiders Guilds and other groups.

Corset Vase by Stacey Esslinger Using a variety of fabrics, textiles, and molds of knitting I texture a flat slab by pressing the fabric into the clay using a rolling pin. I then cut out patterns which I have developed by trial and error, and let the porcelain slab dry enough for handling. Using techniques similar to sewing the seams and darts are joined together creating a three dimensional form. The last step is to add rims, feet, handles, and spouts. The pieces dry slowly, are bisque fired, glazed, and then fired again. All my work is functional and food safe, and can safely be used in the microwave and dishwasher.

Jewels from the Sea by Lois Griffith For Lois, quilting will be her legacy. Ever since her first quilt classes following a Bicentennial quilt show in Harper’s Ferry, WV in 1976, Lois has not stopped quilting. It has become her passion! While starting out making traditional quilts, Lois has enjoyed adding her own twist to the familiar traditional patterns. When the opportunity arose, Lois bought into a partnership in her favorite quilt shop. Currently Lois teaches at Quilted Expressions in Lynchburg Virginia. She has been teaching beginning machine piecing along with many other classes, to teach students the importance of value placement in quilt designs. With over 30 years experience in quilting, Lois continually develops new classes.

Palm of the Hand Writers: Jan. 7, Feb. 4 The first Monday of every month, 4-5:30 PM, “Palm-of-the -Hand” memoir writers meet in the Board Room of the Arts Center. The concept of this writing is to take a single anecdote and express it in no more than one page. If you’ve wanted to put down memoirs of your life, but didn’t know how to begin, this is a great format to start. We each read and offer feedback when requested. Try it!
