9.

Mary Elizabeth Bailey was born about 1813 in Kentucky. She died on 24 Jan 1858 in Lewis County, Kentucky. Notes for John L. Polley: John L. Polley Sr. although some documents show his middle initial as “S” it is almost certainly “L”. He was born somewhere between the years of 1812 and 1816 in Butler County, Ohio while his parents lived there for a short time. After the family moved back to Kentucky and settled in Lewis County, John L. spent the remainder of his life there. Sometime during the year of 1841 John married Mary Elizabeth Bailey. Mary was born in approximately 1821 but who her parents were has not yet been discovered. However, she and John raised a large family of at least seven children: William Jasper, Andrew J., John L. Jr., David P., Nancy J., Mary Elizabeth, and Eliza A. After only 17 years of marriage, at the age of 37, Mary died on February 24, 1858. She is buried in Teager Cemetery in Lewis County. John followed her in death in or about the year of 1872. He appears in the 1870 census record but does not appear in the 1873 tax records. If he is buried beside Mary in Teager Cemetery his grave is not marked. One document indicates that he is buried in “The Old Burying Place” at Fairmont.

David Polly (son of John Polly and Susannah) was born about 1782 in Prob. South Carolina. He died on 17 May 1847 in Lewis Co., KY. He married Nancy Ford (daughter of Joseph Ford and Ruth Phillips) on 24 Jan 1803 in Adair Co., KY.

17.

Nancy Ford (daughter of Joseph Ford and Ruth Phillips) was born about 1782 in KY. She died about 1862 in Lewis County, Kentucky.

Notes for David Polly: In Lewis Co., KY in 1813 David Polley of Kentucky David Polley line, was born in about 1782 in (likely) South Carolina. His father was John Polley. David’s wife, Nancy, was somewhat of a mystery. For a long time she was known erroneously as Nancy Hyatt (Hieatt). Through further research, however, it was discovered that Nancy’s maiden name was Ford. The confusion was due, perhaps, to a Nancy Hyatt who was born in Kentucky and married a man by the name of Daniel Wooley of Kentucky. Wooley could be mistaken for Polley if the reader/recorder was not thorough or accurate. Nancy Ford was born in Kentucky somewhere around 1782, the daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Phillips) Ford. She and David were married on January 24, 1804 in Adair County, Kentucky.

According to the Adair County tax records of 1806 David and Nancy lived along Crocus Creek. Living close by them on Crocus Creek were David’s brothers and their families: 1) William and Jemima (Kelso) Polley; William was born December 6, 1776 in Virginia or Kentucky while Jemima was born March 21, 1779 in Buck County, Pennsylvania. William and Jemima were married on June 12, 1799 in Barren County, Kentucky. 2) James and Sara (Ford) Polley. James and Sara/Sally were married on March 4, 1805. It seems that Sara and Nancy were sisters. James, the youngest of the three, was born in about 1786. David’s mother and father, John and Susannah Polley, also lived close by. The three Polley families moved together from Adair County, Kentucky to Butler County, Ohio sometime during the year of 1806-1807. Here David and Nancy purchased land and continued to rear their growing family. At some point during this period the Polley families separated. Although Ohio became a state in 1803 there was a great deal of unrest at this time in Ohio due to the brewing tensions between Great Britain and the United States. The British were stirring up the Native American tribes in Ohio to take up arms against the white settlers. Because of this, life on the Ohio side of the river became very unsafe. Perhaps this is what led to the separation of the three families. Why they separated is not certain but what is certain is that somewhere around 1812-1816 William and Jemima (according to records left by their children) begin to move around Ohio ending up in Darke County. Jemima died on November 16, 1840 in Darke County, Ohio. After her death William moved to Green County, Kentucky where he passed away on January 16, 1847. David and James returned to Kentucky with their families. James and Sara move to Floyd County, Kentucky. It seems uncertain as to what became of Sara, but James died at a young age in Floyd County, Kentucky in about 1816. David and Nancy moved to Lewis County where they remained for the rest of their lives. There are still many Polleys scattered throughout Kentucky and Ohio.

Once in Lewis County David took up farming along a fairly large creek called Quick’s Run. This tract of land is reported as being originally marked and cleared by Simon Kenton. Quick’s Run flows along the base of a ridge of hills that separate the Ohio River Valley from the valley on the southern side of the creek. The Lewis County tax records of 1820 show that David owned land along Quick’s Run. David and his family also appear for the first time in the 1820 Lewis County Census records. By this time David and Nancy were the parents of a large family consisting of at least six children: Joseph (age 15), James (age 12), David Jr. (age 7), John (age 4), an unknown infant son, and a daughter, age 10-16. Also living with David and his family was an “insane” brother, probably named Jesse, that the records show David was authorized to keep at the county’s expense. Records from the War of 1812 reveal that David served in the militia and even received a small pension later in life for having served. His service commenced on July 28, 1813 and ended on September 5, 1815. It is not clear whether David lived in Ohio or Kentucky during the time of his military service. According to records, however, he fought with:1. Stewart’s Ohio Militia, commanded by Captain Thomas Robinson, from July 28-August 12, 1813. This unit was attached to McDonald’s Ohio Militia commanded by Captain Lemnel Connelly and Colonel John McDonald.2. Donavon’s 69th Militia in 1814. 3. Logan’s Army, September 10-October 9, 1814. It appears that several militiamen from Mason County, Kentucky were a part of this militia.

Not much else is known about the life of this Kentucky pioneer except that, on May 17, 1847, David passed away and was buried on a hill rising up from Quick’s Run and Martin’s Hollow. The churchyard where he is buried in an unmarked grave lies around an old church called Fairmont Christian Church. According to records, this church was originally founded in 1820 but burnt and was rebuilt in 1850. Though greatly dilapidated, this building is still standing at the time this account was written. This author has been to it on many occasions. In the oldest Lewis County historical records this cemetery is referred to as “The Old Burying Place”. Whether or not the church built in 1850 occupies the spot of the original church is uncertain. What is certain, however, is that many, many Polley ancestors, along with David, have been laid to rest in this cemetery in graves whose locations have been long lost. Sometime after David’s death Nancy moved in with their son, John L. Polley Sr. This was discovered through the 1860 Lewis County census records that show Nancy Polley, age 73, living with John. Nancy’s name appears one last time in the 1862 Lewis County Tax list but after this she is never heard from again. Presumably she is buried beside her husband at Fairmont in “The Old Burying Place”. Mark Polley Nancy Ford and David Polly had the following children: i. Francis Marion Polly (son of David Polly and Nancy Ford). He died in 1853. ii.

David and his family also appear for the first time in the 1820 Lewis County Census records. By this time David and Nancy were the parents of a large family consisting of at least six children: Joseph (age 15), James (age 12), David

64.

David Polly (son of Edward David Polley and Mary) was born in 1725 in , Brunswick, Virginia, USA. He died in Jun 1785 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA. He married Agnes Atkins.

65.

Agnes Atkins was born about 1738 in Virginia, USA. She died about 1798 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA. Notes for David Polly: It seems David was the oldest child of Edward and Mary Polley. He was born in about 1725 in Pittsylvania County and lived there his entire life. His wife was Agnes Adkins who was born about

1738 in Henrico, County Virginia. (Note: Agnes Adkins, born about 1738 in Herrico, Virginia and died about 1798 in Pittsylvania County, has a fascinating blood line that I have traced back to the 15th century. An appendix will be added to the end of this account detailing her lineage.) Although four of David´s brothers: Peter, James, Edward, and Andrew ``Drury´´ moved to Kentucky in the 1770´s, David and Agnes did not. David died where he lived in 1785 and Agnes followed him in death in 1798. It is possible, and even quite likely considering the times, that David and Agnes never saw David´s brothers ever again after the four moved to Kentucky. ARRIVING IN KENTUCKY There are presently Polleys living in many states and also in several countries around the world. Early census records, from the colonies and states that kept them that is, show Polleys in several places. The Polleys (sometimes spelled ``Polly´´ in early records) came west into Kentucky from Pittsylvania County, Virginia in the 1770´s; that is, some did. In all likelihood these pioneers took the overland route through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky as discovered by Daniel Boone. These Polleys, along with other Virginian families, were reportedly led by Colonel Abram Bowman. When they arrived in Kentucky they established Bowman´s Station, not far from Fort Harrod (present day Harrodsburg). Among these Polleys were the aforementioned brothers of David: 1. Andrew (Drury) Polley - killed at the Battle of Blue Licks, August 19, 1782 2. Peter Polley Sr. - born about 1745 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and died in October of 1817 in Shelby County, Kentucky. 3. James Polley4. Edward Polley Why these pioneers came to Kentucky is not known for sure, but more than likely it was why most came, land and opportunity. Mark Polley

Agnes Atkins and David Polly had the following children: 32. i. John Polly (son of David Polly and Agnes Atkins) was born in 1760 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA. He died on 04 Sep 1840 in , Adair, Kentucky, USA. He married Susannah in 1783 in Camden Dist. SC. She was born in 1760. She died in 1848. ii. Edward Polly (son of David Polly and Agnes Atkins). Generation 8 128.

Edward David Polley (son of Edward Polley and Mary Merrow) was born on 09 Sep 1699 in New Hampshire. He died on 30 Aug 1770 in Virginia, USA. He married Mary.

129.

Mary was born in 1702. She died in 1787.

Notes for Edward David Polley: Many suggest Edward Jr. was born in Virginia but the dates just do not add up. Through research I am sure he was born in 1699 in New Hampshire. As a young man, his father, Edward Polley Sr., went to New Hampshire presumably to live with an older brother who had moved there some time earlier. It was there that Edward Sr. met and married Mary and where Edward Jr. was born before the young family moved to Virginia. Through the Civil war, and still today, there are Polleys in the New England area. A Sgt. George Polley, from New Hampshire, killed in the final days of the Civil War, was a great or great, great grandsom of Edward Sr.'s father, George. Research the details and see if they don't lead you to the same conclusions. ******************** The Virginians The story of the Virginians begins with Edward Polley Jr. who was born, probably in New Hampshire, on September 9, 1699. He came to Pittsylvania County (called Halifax County at the time) with his parents and family. It took a while to sort his identity out from other Edward Polleys in his extended family. It was also difficult because his wife shared the same first name as his mother, Mary. Unfortunately, this first name is all that seems to be recorded about his wife. One document uncovered concerning Edward Jr. is that he was a tailor by trade. We also know Edward was a landowner in the Surry area and that he and Mary raised a large family of their own. The names of the children discovered are: David (1725), Edward (1730), Joseph (1737), Margaret (1740), Peter (1745), James (before 1750), Jesse (1750), and Drury Andrew (birth date unknown). As it was with his grandfather, George, so it is with Edward Jr.; there is a great deal of interesting trivia from his life:* 1753 - Lunenburg County, Virginia land records as a landowner.* December 21, 1759 - From the Vestry Book of Antruim Parish, “ordered that Edward Polly be set levy free for the future.” This means that he had reached the age of 59 because that is the age at which one was exempted from paying levies (taxes).* August 16, 1759, Halifax County, Antruim Parish, Edward Purchased land from John Adams.* 1764 - Registered in Halifax County Voting records along with his son, David.* August of 1770 - Edward Polly sued John Cook for 2 pounds and 5 shillings. Although he won the case, he apparently died before he could collect. * March of 1771 Edward’s estate was settled with his son, David, listed as the executor. David is the next Polley in our direct line.

Mary and Edward David Polley had the following children: 64. i. David Polly (son of Edward David Polley and Mary) was born in 1725 in , Brunswick, Virginia, USA.
