Addies Gordon Thomas, son of Walter Delaware Thomas and Mary Melviney Peacock was born on 02 Jan 1901 in Cottonwood, Alabama. He died on 27 May 1976 in Dothan, Alabama, buried in Hartford City Cemetery. He married Katie Leveetie Spikes on 01 Aug 1920 in Noma, Florida by Justice of the Peace Watson Ramsey.

9.

Katie Leveetie Spikes, daughter of Nathaniel A. Spikes and Margaret A. Walker was born on 02 Oct 1902 in Black, Alabama. She died on 07 Oct 1982 in Dothan, Alabama, buried in Hartford City Cemetery. Notes for Addies Gordon Thomas: He was a Methodist minister, known for remodeling churches and parsonages wherever he served. He was a Master Mason (Taylor Lodge #447) and Royal Arch Mason (Dothan Chapter 113, RAM.) A.G. Thomas was born January 2, 1901, In Cottonwood, Alabama, the son of Walter Delaware and Mary Melviney Peacock Thomas. The fourth of five children, his siblings in order of birth were Horace, Jesse, Fannie, and Marvin. His father, W.D. Thomas, died of yellow fever in 1905, and as soon as the oldest brother Horace was able to work to support them, the family moved to Hinote in southern Geneva Co., near Esto, Florida, and subsisted by sharecrop farming. Here Ad spent his adolescence, and in 1916 he joined Sardis Methodist Church. Katie Spikes was born October 2, 1902, in Black, Alabama, the daughter of Nathaniel Spikes and Maggie Walker Spikes. Also the fourth of five children, Kate's siblings in order of birth were Virgie, Miley, Frank, and Joe. Throughout her childhood, Katie's family farmed in southern Geneva County, Alabama, and in northern Holmes County, Florida. Ad and Kate were married at her father's home in Noma, Florida, on August 1, 1920, by Justice of the Peace Watson Ramsey. Raimon was born in June 1921, and six weeks later the young family moved to Freeport, Florida, where Ad found work in the sawmill owned by a Mr. P.W. Miles (for whom Joseph Miles Thomas is named.) Mog was born late in '23, and Ralph was born in early '26. In that same year, Ad was licensed as an exhorter by the Methodist Church. Visiting the Freeport area where they lived, one will today find, close by the Choctawhatchee Bay, decaying houses wrapped in dense trees and undergrowth, and surrounded by an almost utter lack of activity, characterized by the hoary beards of Spanish moss lazily draping the scene. In contrast, when Ad, Kate, and their babies were there, the place was abustle, with houses of barely seasoned lumber jutting from the raw earth, and the screech and clamor of the mill dominating all. It was here that five year old son Raimon, without his father's knowledge, charged a soft drink and a pair of new overalls to Ad's account at the commissary, then lost his nerve before reaching home and threw the evidence of his horrid crime into a branch. The whole load was only eighty cents worth -- the drink was a nickel -- but Raimon received a considerable hiding, because eighty cents was almost a third of the family's total weekly income. The overalls were retrieved and he got to keep them. Tragedy followed in May of '27 when little Ralph, after eating scraps that had been thrown to the chickens, fell ill and died. Shortly after Ralph's death, Ad began his ministry in the Methodist Church -- a ministry which was to span nearly fifty years. He was licensed to preach by the Marianna District Conferencebecame a lay preacher, or exhorter, filling in for absent preachers, speaking at camp meetings, or holding services on off weeks at churches in Point Washington, Portland, and Bruce. Once a month he would conduct services in a road-gang convict camp near Bruce. James was born in '26, and Miles was born late in '30. By this time the mill in Freeport had "cut out," meaning most all the virgin timber in the region that was profitable to remove had been cut. But Ad, because he performed so many different jobs in the mill, was able to stay employed in Freeport until '31. "Setting blocks" and "setting dogs" on the carriage were two such jobs. These were two particularly dangerous tasks involved in trimming raw timber to a certain thickness, then flipping the timber over to be cut into sizes. It was at this time that a tooth was thrown from a saw and cut deep into the back of the pocket watch Ad wore in the bib of his overalls. Raimon still has the deeply dented watch that kept the deadly projectile from piercing his father's chest. In '31, the family moved briefly to DeFuniak Springs and lived with Uncle Sol and Aunt Liz Peacock (Ma Thomas's brother), but as no work was to be had in those years of the cruel Great Depression, they soon returned to Alabama. The Metcalf place near Tate School in southern Geneva County was their next home, but a fire left Ad, Kate, and their four children without shelter or possessions. The Scarborough family (Mr. Whit Scarbrough, whose son George became a Methodist minister) housed, fed, and clothed them until they were able to find a house on the Bud Lee place, while Ad worked for farmers by the day,

until they were able to find a house on the Bud Lee place, while Ad worked for farmers by the day, found occasional work in a shingle mill, and served as a supply preacher in the area to provide for the family. In 1932, Ad made a crop on the Bud Lee place, and soon after its gathering, he received his first regular assignment as a minister and was sent to the Geneva circuit. The family moved to the Vaughn place west of Geneva, and Ad preached at Midway, Pleasant Ridge, Poplar Head, Vaughnville and Westside. The church at Westside, in Geneva, was the first of many he built. Ad originally preached here under a brush arbor. The church was built from lumber salvaged from the demolished Episcopal Church in Geneva, and Raimon, only a young boy at the time, hauled the lumber to the new church site with a mule and wagon. This church was remodeled later and is now unused, its congregation having moved to a new building several blocks away. During the five years Ad served the Geneva circuit, the family continued to live on and work five acres of cotton at the Vaughn place, where Adger was born in '33 and John was born in '35. Sent to the DeFuniak Springs circuit in 1937, Ad served churches at Piney Grove, Otter Creek, Aliquot, and West End. Jo Ann, the second and last daughter of Ad and Kate, was born in DeFuniak Springs in August, 1938, just days before the family was again to move to southern Geneva County, Alabama. For the next six years, Ad served the Black circuit, preaching in the churches of Red Hill, Bethlehem, Millville, and Black. During his tenure at Black, his seventh son, Sherwood, was born in late '42. Sherwood has often been teased for being the family's "black baby." Late in 1942, Ad became pastor to the Hartford circuit, preaching at Oak Grove, Pondtown, Wesley Chapel and St. Paul. While on the Hartford circuit, Mike, the last child of Ad and Kate, was born late in '45, but the family was far from ceasing to grow, for in the decade of the 40's, marriages began to bring in-laws into the family, and grandchildren soon followed. Ad next served the Dothan circuit in 1947, which included the churches of Piney Grove, Big Creek, Taylor, and Tabernacle, but after a year he returned to the Hartford circuit. In 1951, he was assigned to Curtis Memorial in Dothan, and while there, the family suffered the loss of daughter Mogrett Thomas Smith, who died of leukemia in Key West, FL. Though he had served over twenty-five years in the Methodist ministry, Ad had never been admitted as a member of the Alabama-West Florida Conference because he had only an eighth grade education. His status in the church at this time was "accepted supply" minister. In the early 50's, he began taking both correspondence and on-campus courses at Troy State College (now University) in order to be eligible for conference membership as a regular minister. Later, he spent time in summers taking courses at Emory University in Atlanta. Upon completion of the required college courses, Ad was extended membership in the conference. After serving Curtis Memorial, Ad was sent to Cottonwood First Methodist in 1955. From Cottonwood, he was sent to Lynn Haven, Florida, and from there he was posted to First Methodist in Slocomb, where in 1965, Ad retired from the ministry. He and Kate moved back to Cottonwood, but in a short time he resumed his calling, briefly serving Friendship and Campbellton before taking a full-time assignment at the church at Malone. After six years there, in failing health, he again retired, but chose, after a couple of years of rest, to return to the ministry as pastor at the small country church of Mt. Zion. Addies Gordon Thomas died of complications following gall bladder surgery on May 27, 1976, in Dothan, Alabama. Soon after Ad's death, Kate moved to Dothan, where she lived until her death following elective surgery to replace an aortic valve on October 7, 1982. Physically, Ad Thomas was a small man, about 5' 3", but he had a presence that could fill a whole church. He was blessed with a singing talent, and spoke with a steady, authoritative voice. His whole bearing commanded respect, but at the same time expressed the unconditional love he felt for his Lord, his family, friends, and congregations. A skilled carpenter, he left almost every place he served with a new or remodeled church or parsonage. A devoted Christian, he left almost everyone he met with a new or remodeled appreciation for the love and sacrifice of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Ad and Kate's children and their families, now numbering over eighty, continue to gather on the Saturday before Christmas to celebrate the memory of Ad and Kate Thomas. MORE EARLY HISTORY. Mr. Editor: As my other piece did not find its way to the waste basket, I will try and write some more. I will give you a few more names, some that lived on the east side of Claybank creek. There was William Cox, my father, Noel Dowling, Dr. Mack Atkins the noted bear hunter, Samuel Hallford, John Andrews, grandfather of your townsman, Berry Andrews, Rev. Dempsey Dowling, who settled at Skipperville, and it was named after him. Well, I will have to stop, as my mind takes in so many. I told in my other article that there were about 480 able-bodied men in this whole country that were subject to the war. Well, there was a proclamation from the governor for troops to fight the Indians. So they were all ordered to meet at Daleville and lined up so that their names could be taken down, and Sceban Gray was the man who did the writing. When the list was completed the names were put in a hat and mixed up and drawn out. The ones that were drawn out had to go and fight the Indians. There was a demand for substitutes to go. Peace was soon restored. This was a large county then, embracing Dale, Coffee, Geneva and Covington counties. I have heard Elisha Matheny say that he was appointed to collect the taxes of these counties, then one county, about the date of 1830, for the fees were one hundred dollars, and he said that would buy him eighty acres of choice land. See the progress of time. About 1840 the waters were troubled. The court house question was agitated to move it to old Wilburn on Pea river. That called for a division of the county. The court house was at Daleville. Mr. Arch Justice being a man of much vim and determination, his friends run him for the legislature for a division of the county. He won the race against Jerry Warren, who wanted the court house moved west. Justice said during his campaign that he would divide the county if he had to take a broad axe and hew it open from north to south. During the campaign things got so warm that Jerry Warren and Tobias Lee met in the road near Daleville and had a fight about it. On election day in Bear 2, at Levi Dowling's house, the election was held. During the day a man by the name of Blaric wanted to move the court house west and he bought honey by the tub full and treated on it, and that gave rise to the name of Honey Town after that. Justice had an act passed for the division, and the range line between 22 and 23 being agreed upon. This soon brought on something else. The next thing was moving the courthouse to Newton, and Thomas Andrews, Sr., was one of the commissioners at that time. He owned the land and had the town laid off in lots. My father, Wm. Cox, was county surveyor at that

owned the land and had the town laid off in lots. My father, Wm. Cox, was county surveyor at that time, and he laid off the town into lots, and they were sold. At that time there were no bridges in the whole land called Dale county. Thomas Andrews, Sr., built the first bridge across the river at Newton. It was a toll bridge and "Bertice (second letter faded, could be e, c, or o) Byrd, Sr., kept it for him until the Harrison flood carried it off. Then he kept a ferry for a long time. The next bridge was built by the county, and the Lincoln flood carried it away. Think of the progress of the time. Now we have about 110 bridges, two of iron, and eight wooden ones that are covered, and a good court house and soil, and the county is prosperous and doing well.

Pearson Peacock, son of Levi Peacock and Jemima Pearson was born about 1781 in Wayne Co., NC. He died on 08 Jun 1845 in Dale County, AL. He married Nancy Peacock on 20 Mar 1805 in Washington County, Georgia.

137.

Nancy Peacock was born about 1785 in NC. She died after 1860 in Dale County, AL. Notes for Pearson Peacock: "Pearson and his father, along with other Peacocks, participated in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery. Levi came up with a winning draw that entitled him to a 202 1/2 acre parcel in the newly-created Wilkinson County, Ga. Pearson drew a blank in the lottery and he continued to live in Washington County, even after his father and brothers had moved to Wilkinson County. The blank draw was only the beginning of bad luck that was to plague Pearson the rest of his life. Although he was a winner in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery, he had to sell the parcel in order to raise money, and even then he lost his farm when it was put up for sale to satisfy a judgement against him. At the time of the lottery, he had not been back long from serving in the Seminole War of 1817-1818. He had been with Capt. Benjamin Sessions' Co., 2nd Georgia Cavalry, serving from 1 Dec. 1817 to 21 Jan. 1818 as corporal. This is the service record upon which Nancy later based her request for bounty land." Maybe Pearson thought things might be better somewhere else after he lost his farm because ca. 1823 he moved to Jackson County, Florida. He settled on 160 acres south of the present town of Campbellton. People were allowed to "preempt" up to 640 acres at $1.25 an acre, as long as they could prove that they had been living on and farming the land before the deadline of 1 Jan. 1825. But alas, bad luck seemed to follow Pearson to Florida. In 1824 he showed up on a list of tax defaulters and in 1827 he signed over his preemption rights to his property. There is no further record of Pearson in Jackson County until 1838 when he appears on a county census. This date links up with the one in W.E. Mathews' list of early settlers. Pearson moved his family to Alabama, possibly because his son, Kinion, had moved there. The exact place that they lived is not known, nor is the burial place of Pearson and Nancy. After Pearson's death, Nancy lived with her various children. Although census records would indicate more children, there were only six who were certain." (Grimes, p. 137.)

Nancy Peacock and Pearson Peacock had the following children: 68. i. Kinion Peacock (son of Pearson Peacock and Nancy Peacock) was born on 10 Oct 1807 in Georgia (probably Washington Co.)[see Grimes, p. 136.]. He was appointed as Skipperville's first postmaster around 1854. On August 3, 1863, he defeated J.R. Breare for a seat in the State Senate. He owned several parcels of land around the present G.W. Long High School in Skipperville. (Grimes, Dale County Alabama Kin, p. 142)

Notes for Benjamin Gordon Peacock: Grimes conjectures that he died of natural causes in 1863, and is probably buried in an unmarked grave at Asbury. (Grimes, p. 146.) Notes for Celia Iantha Windham: "...probably bur. in Grenada Co., Miss." (Grimes, p. 146.) "...probably bur. in Grenada Co., Miss." (Grimes, p. 146.) 163.

Hannah Huggins, daughter of John Huggins and Elizabeth White Simmons was born in 1776. She died about 1843 in Darlington District, South Carolina. Notes for Paul Severance: There is a public announcement issued by the Commissioner's Office, Darlington Courthouse, August 19, 1845, regarding the case of Paul S. Saverance, Dewitt Fields, and (illegible) versus Margaret Severance and heirs at law of Paul Severance and Hannah Severance, deceased. Bill for Partition & Account. "It appearing to my satisfaction that Thomas Severance, Tobias Lee, and Elizabeth Lee his wife, three of the defendants in the above stated case, are absent from, and reside beyond the limits of this State. . ." It appears likely that the above-named Margaret is the second wife of Paul Severance, whom he married shortly before his death. This second marriage to a Margaret is mentioned in a narrative written by Mary Louise Reynolds. The plaintiff Paul S. Saverance is the son-in-law of Paul & Hannah, having married their daughter Hester. There are sources which use "Saverence" and others that use "Severance" for many members of this family.
