Ancestors of Pedro Oliverio Sanchez

Generation No. 1 1. Pedro Oliverio Sanchez, born 23 May 1884 in Springer, NM; died 19 Sep 1929 in Ocate, NM. He was the son of 2. Cristoval Sanchez and 3. Maria Placida Chaves. He married (1) Maria Filomena Duran 10 Aug 1907 in Ocate, NM. She was born 10 Jul 1890 in Encerro, Mora, NM, and died 03 Jul 1984 in Santa Fe, NM. She was the daughter of Jose Manuel Duran and Josefa Metzger. Notes for Pedro Oliverio Sanchez: Pedro's life was defined by being the only child of the prominent Cristoval Sanchez and Placida Chaves. His father's profession as school teacher, rancher, and later, a school superintendent and legislator, meant that he would certainly have his son well schooled at the Christian Brother's St. Michael's College in Santa Fe. This was a unique educational privilege of the children of well-to-do ranchers and merchants of the late nineteenth century New Mexico. Pedro was to witness as a young man the slow demise of his father. After his father's death in the Spring of 1907, his mother was to send that Summer a letter seeking the hand in marriage of the neighbor's daughter, Maria Filomena Duran. This letter and copies still survive. Living in the ranch at the time was the adopted Adelina, a servant, but probably niece of Placida, that was brought over from Conejos, Colorado, and also, a ranch hand and servant named Nestor Duran. By inheriting 1,100 acres of prime farming and grazing land as well as his childhood home, Pedro's educational level permitted him to be a successful rancher, especially during the World War I years. He was to serve in the New Mexico Legislature and also served for a period of time as Mora County Deputy Sheriff. He was one of the first persons to own an automobile is this area of Mora County. His life was to be cut short by a brain hemorrhage that afflicted him at his ranch in September of 1929. His two grown sons would manage the ranch for their mother after his death. Adding to the heavy burden of having most of her children young and still at home, the widow Filomena was pregnant at the time and would go into a long mourning period. This was affecting her family. Cristobal would later tell his wife of his words to his mother to stop the mourning since his father hadn't loved them and that it was a known fact in the Ocate area that he had already been planning to leave the family and go live with his pregnant girlfriend. Grandmother Filomena was also pregnant at the time of Pedro's death. This child, Ila Jo, was born on about March of 1930 and was to die of pneumonia eight months after birth. The girlfriend's name was never spoken of and her male child was also born in 1930. Little is known about this boy other than what was reported by the Sanchez daughters Placida and Fabiola said that he looked much like young Gilbert Sanchez. Generation No. 2 2. Cristoval Sanchez, born 25 Mar 1862 in Taos, NM; died 04 Apr 1907 in Las Vegas, NM. He was the son of 4. Juan Felipe Sanchez and 5. Bonifacia Mestas. He married 3. Maria Placida Chaves 25 Mar 1883 in Ocate, NM. 3. Maria Placida Chaves, born Sep 1865 in Conejos, Colorado; died 14 Dec 1921 in Ocate, NM. She was the daughter of 6. Jose Donaciano Chaves and 7. Maria Salome Espinosa. Notes for Cristoval Sanchez: Cristoval (this was his well known spelling of his name) lost his father at an early age. His adoptive father was the prominent Tio Don Pedro A. Sanchez, as he was called by the Sanchez family. Don Pedro had married Refugio Martinez on about 1859. She was daughter of one of Padre Martinez of Taos' brothers, who were land grant owners. The couple were given land and a start as ranchers. As a young man, Pedro was educated in Padre Martinez' pioneering Taos School. He and Refugita did not have children of their own. After Cristoval's biological father, Juan Felipe, died during a buffalo hunt shortly after 1870, his mother, Bonifacia Mestas de Sanchez, allowed Tio Don Pedro, to raise her son Cristoval. They also adopted Carlota, a daughter of one of the Martinez's. She went on to marry Laureano Mares. Don Pedro had achieved prominence as Capitan during the Civil War, US Indian Agent. Later after marrying, he became Politician, Territorial Legislature Representative and Assembly President, Director of the 1900 US/NM Census, and land owner in Taos, Mora, Valencia, and Colfax Counties. As Indian Agent after the Civil War, Don Pedro also raised 20 Navajo children orphaned as a result of the brutal Navajo Trail transfer of Navajos from eastern New Mexico to the Four Corners Area. The Taos home was a large, two story hacienda on about 500

1

acres. This was to be Cristoval's home until manhood. It was Don Pedro who bought 1,100 acres of ranching land in Los Hueros (Ocate, NM) for his father, Cristoval Guillermo Sanchez. Cristoval is listed in the 1870 Census as living there with his second wife, Rafaela Montoya (age 50) and daughter Carmel (age 4). They are also listed in 1880 Census where he is listed as being chronically ill and supported by his son. After Cristoval Guillermo's death on about 1882, this Ocate ranch was willed to Cristoval by Don Pedro. Cristoval had been educated at the Christian Brothers school in Santa Fe and had become a teacher in both New Mexico and Southern Colorado. It was in Conejos, Colorado, that Cristoval, being a schoolteacher, met and married Carlota Chaves. They were to have one son, Pedro Oliverio, born in Ocate on May 24, 1884. Cristoval later joined Don Pedro by serving in the New Mexico Territorial Legislature up to 1906. In the late 1890s, Don Pedro had petitioned to have Cristoval be appointed Postmaster in Mora, NM. This appointment did not succeed. At the turn of the 20th century, He was Mora County Schools Superintendent. His only son, Pedro was educated at the Christian Brother's St. Michaels College in Santa Fe. During this active period, son Pedro must have been managing the family ranch. On Cristoval's death in spring of 1907, his son Pedro inherited the Ocate ranch and followed his father's request that he take good care of his mother, Placida, who lived out her life in Ocate. It has been told by members of our late Aunt Placida Gallegos family, that Great Grandfather Cristoval contacted syphilis while working for the Legislature in Santa Fe (Syphilis was rampant throughout the world during that era). As the disease progressed, he became dysfunctional, leading to his committal into the State Mental Hospital in Las Vegas, NM, during1906. It was just before this time that Cristoval was known to have passed by the Demetrio Medina farm in Levy and asked to be a guest for the night. The Medinas later told about the incident of Cristoval acting lost and crazed. It was at the Asylum that he wrote his son a letter, dated March 11, 1907, stating that this would be the last he would hear of him. He apparently still had his mind as the letter indicates, but implies that he did not want to continue living and had remorse for his "evil" ways. Research into State Hospital records does not give cause of death, only residency and time of death. His son Pedro and wife Filomena must have considered, that as Catholics, Cristoval's suicide was a dishonor and was also condemned by the Catholic Church. Therefore, very little was was mentioned by his grandchildren and passed on to the next generation on the real circumstances leading to his death at age 45. His death was noted in a headline of the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper that spoke of "poor Cristoval" , of his legislative support for education, and of his untimely death in Las Vegas, NM. He was buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Ocate. His burial stone still stands there protected by a wrought iron fence. More About Cristoval Sanchez: Burial: Ocate, NM Education: Abt. 1880 More About Maria Placida Chaves: Burial: Ocate, NM Child of Cristoval Sanchez and Maria Chaves is: 1 i. Pedro Oliverio Sanchez, born 23 May 1884 in Springer, NM; died 19 Sep 1929 in Ocate, NM; married Maria Filomena Duran 10 Aug 1907 in Ocate, NM.

Generation No. 3 4. Juan Felipe Sanchez, born 01 May 1838 in Taos, NM; died Abt. 1865. He was the son of 8. Juan Cristoval G. Sanches and 9. Guadalupe Garcia. He married 5. Bonifacia Mestas 10 May 1860 in San Juan, Rio Arriba, NM. 5. Bonifacia Mestas, born Abt. Nov 1841 in San Juan, Rio Arriba, NM; died 05 Apr 1926 in Mora County, NM. She was the daughter of 10. Diego Antonio Mestas and 11. Maria Lorenza Gonzales. Notes for Juan Felipe Sanchez: Very little is known about Juan Felipe other than his baptismal record at the San Fernando de Taos Church, his marriage record at the San Juan de Los Caballeros Church to Bonifacia Mestas, and his listing on the 1860 US Census as living in Los Cordovas (Taos), New Mexico, with his wife and next to his father, Cristoval Guillermo Sanchez. It also lists a girl, Catalina, age 4, Indian, and probably an adopted child by Juan and Bonifacia, before their marriage in 1860. Sanchez family stories states that Juan Felipe was killed during a buffalo hunt. The time and location is unknown. Since his son Cristoval's birth was in March of 1862 and Juan's widow is listed alone in the 1870 US Census. Therefore, his death probably occurred before 1869. Young Cristoval, then about 7 years old, was adopted by Uncle Pedro and Aunt Refugita Sanchez shortly after this time. In the 1870 US Census, a Juan Sanchez is listed as working at Ft. Logan, Bent Co., Colorado, giving his age as 20. This may have been or not the same Juan Sanchez of 1860 Taos.

More About Juan Felipe Sanchez: Baptism: 06 May 1838, Taos, NM Notes for Bonifacia Mestas: In the 1910 US Census, Bonifacia is listed as living in the Wagon Mound area, age 65, widowed, and a farmer. Her neighbors are Maclovio and Cleofas Valdez. More About Bonifacia Mestas: Burial: Mora County, NM Marriage Notes for Juan Sanchez and Bonifacia Mestas: The NM Genealogical Society Marriage Records give that Juane Felipe and Bonifacia were married at the San Juan de los Caballeros Catholic Church, San Juan, NM on the given date. Her parents were given as Diego Antonio Mestas and Mar. Lorenza Gonzales. Child of Juan Sanchez and Bonifacia Mestas is: 2 i. Cristoval Sanchez, born 25 Mar 1862 in Taos, NM; died 04 Apr 1907 in Las Vegas, NM; married Maria Placida Chaves 25 Mar 1883 in Ocate, NM.

6. Jose Donaciano Chaves, born 12 Jan 1844 in Ojo Caliente, NM; died in Ocate, NM. He was the son of 12. Antonio Jose Chaves and 13. Maria de Jesus Olguin. He married 7. Maria Salome Espinosa. 7. Maria Salome Espinosa, born 11 Apr 1849 in El Rito, NM; died in Raton, NM. She was the daughter of 14. Pedro Espinosa and 15. Ana Maria Valdes. Children of Jose Chaves and Maria Espinosa are: 3 i. Maria Placida Chaves, born Sep 1865 in Conejos, Colorado; died 14 Dec 1921 in Ocate, NM; married Cristoval Sanchez 25 Mar 1883 in Ocate, NM. ii. Manuel Nicomedis Chaves, born 20 Sep 1867.

Generation No. 4 8. Juan Cristoval G. Sanches, born 12 Feb 1810 in San Fernando, Valencia, NM; died Abt. 1881 in Ocate, Mora, NM. He was the son of 16. Gregorio Trinidad Sanches and 17. Maria Rita Baca. He married 9. Guadalupe Garcia 17 Jan 1829 in Tome, NM. 9. Guadalupe Garcia, born 1812 in Tome, NM; died in Taos, NM. She was the daughter of 18. Juan Acencio Garcia and 19. Ma. Barbara Duran y Chaves. Notes for Juan Cristoval G. Sanches: Cristoval and Guadalupe were married at Tome, on January of 1829. By the end of that year they had first son Francisco. It is known that the landless Cristoval Guillermo moved his family from Tome to the Taos area after 1831 since second son, Pedro, was also born in Tome on February of 1831. The couple continued to have children, as Taos church baptismal records show the addition of Lucia (1835), and Juan Felipe (1838) during this Mexican Period. He witnessed the insurrection that occurred in NM during the 1830s, the Mexican American War of 1846, when the American Southwest became part of the USA, and the insurrection and assasination of Gov. Bent in Taos shortly after. By the June 1860 US Census, Cristoval Guillermo is listed as farmer in the town of Cordovas (that later became Ranchitos de Taos) and he gave his age as 60 when it should have been 50, as baptismal records at the Tome Church gives his birth in the year 1810. His wife, Guadalupe Garcia, gives her correct age of about 50, as Tome marriage records also verify. Little is known of eldest son Francisco. Sons Pedro Antonio and Juan Felipe both married on about 1859 as they and their wives are listed as childless in 1860 US Census. In 1869, his son Pedro married Refugita Martinez of the Taos Martinez land grant family, this time by the Catholic Church. Son Pedro had prospered in business and served as capitan during the Civil War. In the late 1860s, He had the means to buy a large tract of land in Ocate, Mora County. The establishment of Fort Union and other forts cleared Eastern New Mexico of Indian raids. Pedro must have had military connections that led him towards real estate investment opportunities. By the 1870 US Census, Cristoval Guillermo is farming and living in the Ocate ranch land with new wife (probably common law wife) Rafaela Montoya, age 50, and daughter Carmela, age 4. He gives his age as being 68 this time (correct age would have been 60). The same census lists his son Pedro living in Cordovas with his wife Refugito and his mother, Guadalupe, age 60, who is with them as a domestic along with several other young domestics. A divorce or scandalous break must have occurred before this time between Cristoval and Guadalupe. Nothing else is known about this marriage breakup. By the 1880 US Census, Cristobal gives his age as 79, is retired, is supported by a son (Pedro), and has chronic

3

rheumatism. His wife Rafaelita's age is listed as 40, and their son Jesus Maria (20), and Carmelita (14) are living with them. Cristoval Guillermo died soon after in 1881. This large tract of Ocate land (1100 acres) was given to Don Pedro's adopted son Cristoval, as the children of Rafaelita did not figure in on the inheritance unless small parcels were given to them. Indeed, Cristoval Guillermo being about 10 years younger then he thought he was, explains the vigor he had for taking on a new wife with son and for fathering a daughter. This probably occurred before his moving to the ranch in Ocate that was bought and owned by his son Pedro. Pedro Antonio Sanchez, born 22 Feb 1831 in Tome, Valencia, NM; died 20 May 1905 in Taos, Taos, NM; married Maria del Refugio Martinez 18 Jan 1869 in Taos, NM; born 26 Jul 1837 in Taos, NM. Notes for Pedro Antonio Sanchez: The June, 1860 US Census for San Fernado de Taos, Taos Couty, lists Pedro living with his wife Refugio Martinez and being a merchant. He was a follower of Padre Martinez, an uncle of Refugio. By this time, Padre Martinez had been excommunicated by Bishop Lamy and had become a Presbyterian minister. Pedro probably was married in a civil or protestant ceremony. The Hispanic Genealogy Research Center's records show the couple being married by the Catholic Church in 1869. His birth is record wrong by the HGRC-NM as being as being in 1840. By 1869, after Padre Martinez died, many Taos area followers of Martinez returned to the Catholic Church. This may be the basis for the Sanchez marriage in 1869. Reported in the Jan. 1, 1900 Santa Fe New Mexican that: "Cencus Supervisor Pedro Sanchez is still confined to his bed at Taos from injuries received in the railroad wreck on the Chama River. He is, however, reported to be slightly improved." This incident must of been on the Denver/Rio Grande Narrow Gage Railroad that came down the Rio Grande Gorge from Pilar, then crossed the Chama River just north of todays Espanola Don Pedro died on April 7, 1902, and was buried in Plot 431, National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. He is listed as a Civil War veteran, 2nd Lt., Company G, 1st Regt., NM Auxiliary Infantry. 384. Pedro Duran y Chaves He was the son of 768. Pedro Gomez Duran y Chaves and 769. Isabel de Bohorquez Baca. He married 385. Elena Dominguez de Mendoza. 385. Elena Dominguez de Mendoza She was the daughter of 770. Bartolome (Tome) Dominguez and 771. Elena Ramirez de Mendoza. Notes for Elena Dominguez de Mendoza: Tomé, as it is known today, was originally settled about 1660 by Bartolome (Tomé) Dominguez de Mendoza, the son of a Spanish officer of the same name who had come north to Nuevo Mexico with Juan de Oñate in 1598. The younger Tomé was commissioned into the Spanish Army and eventually achieved command as Lieutenant Governor of the New Mexico Colony. About 1659, he received from Governor Lopez de Mendizabel an encomienda to the area south of Isleta. This placed the local Indian population under his control. He was responsible for their safekeeping and Christianizing, and, in turn, he could use their services as partial compensation for their debt to the crown for protection and other services that the crown performed. The Dominguez family established an estancia west of El Cerro de Tomé and appeared to have good relations with the Isleta Indians. However, during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, thirty-eight members of the Dominguez family were killed and the survivors were forced to flee south to El Paso del Norte. Although Tomé chose not to come back, his son Juan attempted to return with Governor Otermin but retreated when the entrada failed. The Dominguez family did not return after the reconquest by de Vargas in 1680 and the lands remained vacant.

13

In 1739, a group of Genízaros, Indians who had adopted Spanish ways, culture, and language, petitioned Juan Gonzales Bas, the alcalde mayor of Alburquerque, for permission to settle the area known as "Lo de Tomé," or Tomé's Place. The grant was approved July 30, 1739. The first order of business was to build a church. Permission to build the church was granted in 1742 with the structure being completed in 1750 and dedicated in 1754. Tomé, as it came to be known, continued to develop as a community. The area was largely dependent on agriculture, though with the Camino Real traveling through Tomé, the community was able to keep abreast of events and material culture outside of the area. Additionally, many of the men of the area became employed as drivers, herders, etc., initially on the Camino Real and later on the Santa Fe Trail. With the American takeover of New Mexico in 1846 came not only political change but also a religious jurisdictional change as well. Until the Anglo-American takeover, New Mexico had been under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Mexican Synod and the Bishop of Durango. In 1850, jurisdiction was transferred to the Council of Baltimore in the United States. Pope Pius IX appointed a young French priest, Fr. Jean Baptiste Lamy, to be the bishop of the newly formed New Mexico province. Bishop Lamy, realizing the lack of priests in New Mexico, brought many young French priests, including Father Jean Baptiste Ralliere, "El Padre Eterno." Ralliere took over the parish of Tomé in 1858 at the age of 23 and continued to serve the parish for the next 55 years! Father Ralliere was active in local, state, and diocesan politics and helped the people through births, marriages, floods, droughts, and deaths, to say nothing of their religious development. Throughout the years, Tomé was a political center of the Rio Abajo. It was the county seat for Valencia County, a county that stretched from Texas to California. It was also the postal distribution center for settlements from Alameda to Socorro during the Mexican period. Today, though no longer the powerful community it once was, Tomé remains a thriving close-knit agricultural community whose strong religious character continues to endure. The author, Dr. McDonald, greatly appreciates the works of John M. Taylor, "Our Lady of Guadalupe History Project, 1990," on which this introduction is based. Other books by John M. Taylor are available through this web site at Bookstore. Return to NMGS Press (list of books and order form). These are publications A11 and A12.
