Low Energy - So what’s all the fuss about? Why low energy? Who are we and who do we work with? What type and what to look for when buying low energy substitutes? Where to buy? When to switch? Still confused? Let Denmans help you out - looking at energy saving lamps in a new light!

IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY MAKING THE SWITCH MAKES SENSE Each lamp in this guide has a lamp-life comparison dial* showing you just how many more hours lamp-life each low energy version has in comparison to its incandescent counterpart.

Summary of EnErgy Saving LampS bEnEfitS • Longer average life • Consumes less units of electricity

=

• Could reduce your lighting bill • fewer lamp replacements

Saving money & saving the environment!

• Leaves a smaller carbon footprint (*Please note the lamp-life comparison dials are a visual representation of the average lamp life only.)

introduction The pressure on costs seems to grow by the day and reports of higher electricity costs for the future feature heavily on the news. Climate issues are mounting up, stressing the need to save energy. So here’s a bright idea for you: “Swapping conventional lamps with low energy versions not only helps the environment but could also help reduce your lighting bills!” DID YOU KNOW that low energy lamps can use up to 80% less energy and last up to 15 times longer than a common standard tungsten lamp? With escalating rates of gas and electricity, we are all being encouraged to source alternative means of keeping our consumption running at minimal levels. Replacing traditional lamps with new low energy fluorescents and LED types, which are now widely available, are some of the quickest and easiest ways to save energy and money. “WHAT’S THE CATCH?” Well, you will need to spend a little extra on energy saving lamps but you can usually recoup this within a year as they use less energy and last much longer. This means they don’t need replacing as often. Depending on how long your lights are used each day, they could save you a small fortune before they will need to be replaced (see page 11 to see just how much you could save). Advances in technology now means there are many different types of low energy lamps available in a diverse range of shapes, sizes and fittings, including halogen and dimmable replacements. In this guide, you will find alternatives for nearly every traditional lamp in use in the domestic and commercial market. With the help of Crompton Lamps and Megaman, two leading innovators in energy efficient lamps, you can be sure that whatever type of lamps you use (or need), you can find their stylish energy saving equivalents not only in this handy little guide but also in any of our Denmans and Clearlight branches! If the lamps you need aren’t in stock - we can source them for you.

Crompton Lamps are a privately owned British company focussed on quality, availability and very high service levels. This has enabled them to become a core supplier to Denmans, a partnership we value very highly.

Megaman is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of energy saving light lamps, and one of Europe’s top selling brands. Products range from small 2 Watt nightlights and decorative lamps to 320 Watt lamps for industrial use, allowing you to significantly reduce lighting energy consumption and save money on electricity bills. SO HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? Use low energy lamps and get lower utility costs, whilst using less energy consumption and producing less carbon emissions, which seems like a good aim for us all! GET SWITCHED ON FOR LESS!

DIMMER GUIDANCE: Compact Fluorescent lamps work differently to Incandescent and Halogen lamps, and you need to divide the maximum load of the dimmer you are using or fitting by a factor of 6 to get the total amount of CFL power you can use for best performance. For more detailed information, please visit www.megamanuk.com and www.denmans.co.uk. Q5. Are the lamps affected by switching? A5. No, our Ingenium technology soft starts the lamps and they are fine for 600,000 switching cycles without affecting performance.

DIMMERABLE SERIES FAQ Q1. Are Dimmerable lamps the same as other Dimming lamps? A1. No, because we use Ingenium technology that is semi-conductor controlled. Our lamps, in tests, are more responsive and replicates linear dimming more precisely than others available.

Q6. Will any dimmer work your lamps? A6. We have tested over 120 dimmer brands worldwide for compatibility and found that the production and quality of dimmers varies considerably. Not all dimmers therefore are compatible. There is a list of approved ones available on Megaman’s website www.megamanuk.com

Q2. What is linear dimming? A2. Linear dimming is how Incandescent or Halogen lamps perform when on a dimmer. If you take a 100W bulb and dim it to 10% - you will get 10% light output and the voltage or load will be 10% of 240V i.e. 24V. This saves you energy and money!

Q7. How do I look after them for best performance? A7. Follow the instructions carefully and you can help extend the life of the lamps by running them on full power for 1 minute before you start to dim them. This allows the lamp to warm up and you will see a more responsive dimming range.

Q3. Why are Megaman lamps different? A3. Ours are Compact Fluorescent lamps and as such they are a discharge lamp. This means they operate by means of an electrical arc down the lamp. If we dim to 10%, the voltage will not be enough to keep the electrical arc struck. In essence, we are dimming the light output only.

Q8. What are the safety requirements and test they have to pass? A8. All electronic lamps have to pass EMC tests and the relevant BS EN safety awards. We have a full set of EMC certificates that are available for inspection; this means the lamps will not cause interference to other electrical appliances in the room i.e. the TV.

Q4. So do I not get any energy savings when I dim lamps? A4. Yes you do but not the same as linear dimming incandescent lamps. When you dim our GU10 to 10% light output, the load is 50% less i.e. 6W so you do save energy but this is the lowest we can go without the lamp going out.

it’s all in the figures..... When calculating the cost of lamps, it is worth bearing in mind the “hidden” life time issues, which are very relevant in the commercial sector. Consider asking your customers, or even yourself, to pay £10.00 for a LED replacement of a traditional lamp, which would usually cost £1.00. Now that can be a hard sell! But when you take into account that the energy efficient alternative will last up to 15 times longer and use up to 80% less electricity over its whole life, it really isn’t that hard a choice! Coupled with the lower maintenance costs due to less frequent lamp replacement.

Climate Change Levy You should also consider the number of times a traditional lamp will actually need to be replaced and don’t forget the Climate Change Levy a charge that is added to most commercial electricity bills. Introduced in Based on Tungsten Halogen GU10 average lamp life of 2,000hrs April 2001 as a means to encourage businesses to improve energy efficiency, and LED Retrofit GU10 average lamp life of 30,000hrs it aims to help achieve the UK’s target for the reduction of greenhouse gases through a price based signal on energy usage. Basically, the less energy you use, the smaller the levy. You can find more information about the levy at www.denmans.co.uk and www.hmrc.gov.uk.

part L The introduction of Part L in building regulations is also making use of the energy efficient lighting law, impacting on the installation of any new lighting schemes. More details available at www.denmans.co.uk and the Electrical Energy Efficiency Scheme (ECA) website: www.partl.co.uk.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations The other area of change in the lamp industry (as well as in others) is the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations, with regards to issues of recycling. Electrical and electronic wastes are the fastest growing types of waste in the UK. Around 1.8 million tonnes are generated every year. The WEEE regulations aim to reduce the amount of this waste going to landfill and improve recovery and recycling rates. You will need to comply with the WEEE regulations if you: • • • • • •

Generate any electrical or electronic waste Distribute electrical or electronic equipment Collect electrical or electronic waste from your customers for treatment or disposal Operate a waste treatment facility Manufacture or import electrical or electronic equipment Export electrical or electronic waste You may be prosecuted if you fail to comply with the regulations.

Most Denmans and Clearlight branches can help with the end of life lamp disposal (charges may apply) but many lamps are not covered by WEEE. However, all prices quoted by our branches will always include the WEEE levy if applicable, so there are no surprises on our invoices!

Here to Help Here at Denmans and Clearlight, we pride ourselves on lamp supply, including traditional lamps (although we want to do low energy - it’s your choice, of course). If you need more information, we have a full lamp catalogue available - just ask in branch for a copy. If the lamps you need aren’t in stock - we can source them for you.

We could write pages more on these new energy saving LED and fluorescent lamps but in the end it’s a matter of simple calculation: “Pay more up front for the new innovations in lamps and save a small fortune in the medium to long term”.
