2017 SUMMER CAMP BEST SUMMER EVER! campshadybrook.org 719.329.7292

WHY CAMP SHADY BROOK? Since 1948, YMCA Camp Shady Brook has hosted thousands of campers in our beautiful Rocky Mountain setting. We pride ourselves on offering one of the best traditional, values-based camp experiences in the country. Parents and campers alike treasure the camp experience that promotes community, values and personal growth in a natural setting away from the bustle of technology and everyday stressors. This summer, start a tradition of Camp Shady Brook in your family, or come back to the place you call home!

INCREDIBLE STAFF Camp Shady Brook recruits the finest staff from across the country and world to be role models for our campers. Staff members are mature, responsible, caring and committed to youth development. From running safe activities to modeling the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to knowing how to help our campers adapt to and enjoy the overnight camp experience, our staff are incredible. Each staff member is selected and trained to ensure that your child builds confidence, makes friends, learns new skills and grows as an individual in the comfort of a welcoming and caring environment.

SAFETY • A nurse is on duty and onsite 24 hours a day. A doctor is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. • All staff are certified in First Aid, CPR/AED, Oxygen and Blood Borne Pathogens. • All waterfront activities are supervised and managed by Y certified lifeguards. • All staff are carefully interviewed, screened and pass criminal background checks prior to being hired. • All staff participate in an intensive two-week training prior to the start of camp. • Camp Shady Brook meets or exceeds the standards of the American Camp Association and is licensed by the State of Colorado Department of Human Services, Division of Child Care.

Special Needs Camp Shady Brook does not discriminate against campers with special needs, but must take the safety of the entire group into consideration. Please contact the Camp Shady Brook office to discuss the specific needs of your camper.

CABIN LIFE There is nothing more central our campers experience than cabin life. Campers are grouped by age and gender with two counselors. In the cabin, our campers learn to live together as part of a community. In this small group, campers foster selfawareness, communication skills, trust and problem-solving abilities. Our cabins range from lodges with bathrooms attached to cabins to tent-platforms. Call our office today to learn more about our facilities or to schedule a camp tour.

WHAT WILL MY CAMPER EAT? Campers enjoy three nutritious meals each day. We strive to provide a healthy balance and variety of foods, including vegetarian options. Special diets, allergies or other medical needs may typically be accommodated with advance notice to the chef. If you have questions or requests regarding menus or dietary restrictions, please feel free to contact us.

VALUES-BASED PROGRAMMING At Camp Shady Brook, we believe that we provide much more than just a fun recreational experience. Through activities, staff role models and daily conversations, campers learn about and practice our four core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Every program is designed around these values. We believe that you will notice your child’s growth in their understanding and use of these values after their time at camp. 719. 329.7292 | campshadybrook.org | [email protected]

TRADITIONAL CAMP TRADITIONAL CAMP Ages 8-16

For the camper who’s ready to have the full camp experience, one-week traditional camp is the best choice. Each action-packed day is filled with adventure and friendship while your camper participates in activities they have selected based on their interests, with mornings dedicated to pursuits like archery, kayaking, swimming, orienteering, arts and crafts and Ga-Ga ball, just to name a few. All-camp games, night hikes and, of course, roasting s’mores by the campfire await campers in the evenings. All of our activities are counselor-led and designed to give every child the opportunity to learn new skills and build self-confidence.

2-WEEK TRADITIONAL CAMP Ages 8-16

For the camper who wants to try it all, two-week traditional camp offers the widest array of activities and experiences – a little bit of everything! Signing up for two-week camp means twice the fun. Your camper will get to try all the activities they couldn’t fit into their schedule at one-week camp, and can continue building their skills in their favorite activities from week one. Two-week campers will receive priority activity sign-ups during their second week at camp, so they won’t miss out on anything!

$1,100 member/ $1,225 non-member

1/2 WEEK

MINI-ASPEN CAMP Ages 6-8

Start developing your younger campers’ social skills, decision-making abilities and self-confidence during our halfweek Mini-Aspen Camp! This half-week program is the perfect length for younger campers to experience traditional camp offerings, from arts and crafts and archery to canoeing and camp games. This is a great camp experience for first time campers, allowing both children and their parents to take the first steps toward a full week of an overnight camp.

ONE WEEK

ASPEN CAMP Ages 6-8

Building on the half-week program, Aspen Camp gives younger campers a close experience of traditional camp. Structured activities, along with a 1 to 6 staff to camper ratio, provide opportunities essential for a genuine camp experience. Campers will participate in similar programs to the MiniAspen camper, but with the additional time, they will experience campouts, themed events, horse adventures and so much more.

WHAT WILL MY CAMPER DO IN A TYPICAL DAY? A day at camp is filled with adventure, friends, fun and the great outdoors! Each morning the cabin group will enjoy a hearty breakfast together, clean the cabin and then participate in our “morning message” activity. Here the staff and campers sing songs, perform skits or tell stories about one of the four core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The remainder of the morning is filled with a schedule of activities selected by the camper or predetermined by their specialty camp. Everyone at camp will reconvene at lunch for

songs and a well-balanced meal. During the warmest part of the day, campers will have a rest period in their cabin. During this time, campers enjoy the small family atmosphere of the cabin, play cards, write letters, read or sleep. In the afternoon, campers will head to the waterfront for swimming and boating, visit the camp store and participate in activities with their cabin group. Following dinner, campers will gather for camp-wide evening activities, games and campfires. Each cabin completes their day with “embers,” a time for reflection as a cabin group.

Dear Camp Shady Brook Families, This opportunity you are sharing with your child is something that they will cherish forever. The ability for your camper to just be themselves in a safe and supporting environment is a gift that while they may not realize it today, has the power to shape who they are for their future. Camp is a community where children are able to develop life skills and friendships, build their independence, try new activities and gain confidence that will perpetuate into their adulthood. I have been in the camping industry for my entire professional career, and am absolutely a believer in what camp can do for children and their families. We sincerely look forward to meeting your child this summer, sharing our love for the outdoors and helping your camper experience all of the opportunities Camp Shady Brook has to offer.
