The Y focuses on developing and enhancing valuable leadership traits in a fun, safe and value-oriented environment. Interactive training, team building activities, and hands-on learning experiences will foster the skills necessary for serving youth in a positive work setting. Please contact Kelly Miner, Associate Excecutive Director for application details.

Camp Staff

Camp counselors are enthusiastic individuals who are committed to providing a safe, diverse, and fun program for all campers. We screen, interview, and select all camp staff based on their ability to work effectively with children. Before the start of camp all staff undergo trainings which include: camp policies and procedures, emergency and safety regulations, child abuse prevention, behavior management, creative ageappropriate programming, and at least one CPR, RTE (full-day camps) and First Aid certified staff is with each camp at all times.

EAST AREA FAMILY YMCA / 2014 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

GENERAL INFORMATION LEADERSHIP IN TRAINING VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Ages 14-17 The Y takes great strides to develop today's youth and help them become the strong and confident leaders we need for a brighter tomorrow. How do we do this? By offering free, developmentally rich programs to any teen in our community such as the Leadership in Training Program. What is the Leadership in Training Program (L.I.T)? The L.I.T program is a summer long program designed to develop and strengthen leadership skills amongst teens. Through character building trainings and on-the-job experience, teens complete the summer with the resources needed to succeed in any professional setting!

Where within the Y can L.I.T's volunteer? One of the many benefits of this program is that L.I.T's have the ability to choose from one of many summer camps offered through the Y. While choosing their preferred camp, L.I.T's should consider their personal hobbies and interest, ages of children they feel comfortable with and their summer time availability. For a complete list of camps and volunteer opportunities, please see our Leadership in Training catalog. L.I.T.’s are required to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per week. Who can become a L.I.T? Any teen ages 14-17, currently enrolled in high school.

Orientation Dates: April 23, May 7, May 21, June 11 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

How do I apply to the Leadership in Training Program? Simply stop by our front desk and ask for a Leadership in Training application. Once your application is complete, return it to the Y and we will contact you within a few days to schedule an orientation. For more information contact Cayla Clark, Teen Director 637-2025 ext. 230, [email protected]

www.syracuse.ymca.org

Inclusion Support Services

Through the Y's partnerships with Transitional Living Services and the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities the Y is able to offer support services to children with developmental disabilities. Support staff are available in all Y summer day camp programs, on a first come first serve basis, giving children with developmental disabilities the opportunity to enjoy a successful summer camp experience in an inclusive setting. Children will be provided either 1:1 or shared support during the camps. Whether a child receives 1:1 or shared support will be decided on a case-by-case basis, so it is important to make contact early in order to secure support and to determine the best support option available. Certain paperwork and information, above and beyond the camp registration form, will need to be obtained on each child in order to provide support. To request support, please contact Rachael Mehl, Inclusion Director at 637-2025 x 211 or [email protected].

In order to serve as many children as possible, assistance for more than 2 weeks is rare and handled on an individual basis. • All funds will be awarded on a firstcome, first-serve basis in accordance with each camp’s available space. • Each week requires a $10 deposit per child per week when registering with financial assistance or DSS. (Y financial assistance cannot be combined with DSS assistance.) • Upon receiving financial assistance notification the acceptance letter must be returned by indicated date to retain camper’s spot in camp. • You may request an application for assistance at the member service desk or download one from our website.

Half Day Parent Handbook 2014

BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES All children are entitled to a pleasant and harmonious environment while at our programs. Y camps cannot serve children who display chronically disruptive behavior. Chronically disruptive behavior is defined as verbal or physical activity which may include, but is not limited to, such behavior that requires constant attention from staff, inflicts physical or emotional harm to other children, abuses staff, behaves inappropriately, ignores or disobeys the rules which guide behavior and safety.

Reasonable efforts will be made to assist children in adjusting to the camp setting using positive reinforcement. In cases of continued negative or inappropriate behavior, the following consequences may occur: staff reminders, warnings, time away from activities, parent notification, discipline reports and meetings with the Camp Director. If a camper receives 3 written behavior related incident reports he/ she may be suspended from the program for a period of time decided upon by the Camp Director. Depending on the severity of the incident suspension may include discharge without the right to reinstate in the program. Any action that threatens or endangers the immediate welfare of oneself, another camper, or a staff member (ie. physical aggression, threatened acts of violence) may result in immediate dismissal from the program without prior discipline reports. Camp payments will not be refunded due to behavior related suspension from the program.
