Specifically, the central location of Kusadasi with its professional hotel and catering opportunities and the new, groundbreaking Ephesus Convention Center guarantees the implementation of the 8th World Congress of Herpetology in 2016 at the highest stage and will bring contemporaneously an unforgettable experience to every participant. For the purposes of the sentence "Turkey - the land of hospitality", I assure you again of my personal support as governor of the province of Aydin and talking at the same time on behalf of all people living here. 2016 World Congress of Herpetology Kusadasi Turkey Executive Committee World Congress of Herpetology

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of Adnan Menders University it is my pleasure to take this opportunity to support the proposal to host the 8th World Congress of Herpetology in Kusadasi / Aydin. All the more so because my esteemed colleague, Professor Doctor Kurtulus Olgun of our Department of Biology, is the principal partner in this application and also undertakes the scientific leadership of the congress. Prof. Dr. Olgun is not only an acknowledged expert in herpetology but as well versed in the organization and the management of international conferences. This he and his team could prove e.g. as host of the 15th European Congress of Herpetology in 2009, which also took place very successfully in Kusadasi. Not insignificantly for the success of any conference is also the environment in which it takes place. Kusadasi also offers the best conditions at this point. As the major port for Mediterranean cruises, attraction for millions of sun-hungry guests as well as a center of cultural tourism at the Aegean, Kusadasi presents itself as a cosmopolitan city that has still retained its identity. The best proof of this are the numerous restaurants offering the delicacies of the region. With this in mind, I would be very pleased to welcome the 8th World Congress of Herpetology in 2016 in Kusadasi. Yours sincerely,

Executive Committee World Congress of Herpetology

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, For every scientist it is a special moment to host a world congress. For me as Biologist and head of the Herpetological Society it is a great honor and pleasure in the same time to send you this proposal. In fact, I’d like to point out, that Kusadasi as a venue is not only a perfect location for the 8th World Congress gress of Herpetology because of its beauty and historical hist heritage. It is also very easy reachable. E.g. from most of the the airports all over Europe it takes just a few hours to arrive in Izmir and from there one more hour to be in Kusadasi. Furthermore I can n say that our new Ephesus Convention Center (ECC) is a most impressive and innovative venue for international conferences. conferences. And, last but not least, you will find near (ECC) high standard accommodations with all inclusive service for really suitable rates. All in all I just can recommend voting for Kusadasi as venue for the 8th World Congress of Herpetology in 2016 and can ensure you, that I, my team and everyone else, who is involved in this congress, will do the best to guarantee a success and a wonderful time in Kusadasi in August 2016. Yours sincerely,

2016 World Congress of Herpetology Kusadasi Turkey Invitation The Adnan Menderes University of Aydin and the Herpetological Society are pleased to invite the World Congress of Herpetology (WCH) to Kusadasi / Aydin, here to hold its 8th World Congress. The location of Kusadasi has a unique infrastructure for international congresses. The Ephesus Convention Center located here is one of the largest convention centers in Europe. More than 100 hotels in all categories offer beside a comfortable accommodation also the typical Turkish hospitality. Kusadasi is located right on the beautiful Aegean Sea and offers a unique Mediterranean atmosphere. Already in 2009, the 15th European Congress of Herpetology held here. The experience gained from this meeting, shows once again the great interest of the international and national herpetology community right here to swap ideas with colleagues. This is certainly connected with the fact that, for example, along the Aegean coast there are numerous sections that serve rare sea turtles to lay their eggs. Accordingly, colleagues from around the world meet here not only to a very high scientific interest in herpetology, but there are also many initiatives and organizations dealing with the lives of amphibians and reptiles. The focus of the 2016 WCH is therefore also supported by many NGO's. The first of these, the local environmental group called EKODOSD. This ensures that the 2016 WCH will be not only an outstanding scientific event, but also a lot of contacts to be established with dedicated people who are involved in numerous local projects. Proposed Schedule: Distribution of First Announcement and Preliminary Registration Forms – January 2015 Distribution of Call for Papers and Registration Forms – November 2015 Last Date for Receipt of Abstracts and Early Registrations – March 2016 Conference – August 24 – 30, 2016 In January 2015, we also will set up a website with complete information about the congress and regular updates.

2016 World Congress of Herpetology Kusadasi Turkey Proposed Scientific Program The scientific program will of course follow the established organization of the WHC. The participants will already on 23.8.2016, the day before the congress, have the opportunity to register. The first day will be held in plenary. The following days will be initiated with a lecture by a WCH plenary speaker. Then up to eight 15-minute presentations will be held in parallel. On the last day of the Congress there will be a further plenary session in the afternoon. We believe that the WHC is a rare event, at which colleagues from around the world to come together to exchange. For this reason, we have integrated a number of open spaces into the program that allow the participants an informal gathering. This applies to coffee breaks as well as lunch breaks. Here participants will have the opportunity to meet with appropriate seating in Ephesus Convention Center. Since all the hotels will be within reach, it is also possible that participants will us these breaks to meet for example in the park or at the private beach of one of these hotels. The possibilities here are endless. We have at this time already a very clear idea of the social program for the Congress. On the eve of the congress there will be an informal meeting, where you get to know the participants. The first day of the conference will end with a spectacular opening ceremony in the historic Odeon in Ephesus. On the last night of the convention will be an equally impressive closing banquet at the caravanserai, Kusadasi. To give the WCH participants greatest possible flexibility in managing their stay outside the formal sessions, we propose as a common social event only the congress opening and the closing banquet. 28.8.2016 Sunday will be free. On this day is an opportunity to get to know Kusadasi and the surrounding area better. For this purpose a number of excursions are offered. Of course, the participants can explore the region on one’s own too. During the congress, exhibitors will be enabled to market their goods. This refers to, for example, literature and equipment for field observations or other devices that may be useful in the field of Herpetology. As possible pre or post congress tours are particularly appropriate the following: Ephesus - one of the biggest ancient archaeological sites around the world Sirince - the romantic wine village in the mountains above Selcuk Izmir - the pearl of the Aegean Priene - Miletus - Didim - a trip to the cradle of philosophy and science Tire - Birgi - farming traditions and authentic life at the Aegean

The Ephesus Convention Center (www.ecc.com.tr) The Ephesus Convention Center will bring state-of-the-art design and cutting-edge technology to the heart of antiquity starting in autumn 2012. It is the first modern, large-scale convention center on Turkey’s Aegean coast, offering superior facilities in one of Turkey’s most popular and unforgettable destinations, Ephesus and Ku adası. The Ephesus Convention Center offers everything that event planners and professional conference organizers look for in a 21st century venue, combining ease of access, spacious modern facilities and the added attraction of a stunning location nestled in wooded hills overlooking the harbor and the Aegean. For the first time ever, the historic setting of Ephesus will offer a top-tier venue for conferences and exhibitions – a place at once steeped in history and perfectly modern. The Ephesus Convention Center’s interior spaces are adaptable to a wide range of functions and provide a full range of services. The Center’s large foyers with cathedral ceilings are ideal as registration points and reception areas outside both the meeting facilities and the exhibition hall, in addition to serving as supplementary interior exhibition space for particularly large exhibitions. Naturally, they are also excellent for coffee breaks as well as after-session cocktail parties. The Ephesus Convention center utilizes the latest Eco-friendly technologies, reducing its environmental impact and carbon footprint. Our advanced energy management system cuts power usage by over 40%, and an on-site water recycling plant, featuring a 50,000-liter rain and gray water collector, is used to water the Center’s lushly landscaped grounds. We are committed to sustainability in everything we do,

2016 World Congress of Herpetology Kusadasi Turkey Venues for social events Odeon in Ephesus Right at the upper entrance of the historic ruins of Ephesus the Odeon is located. This "little theater" has about 1,400 seats and was built in the 2nd Century AD. Here, for example, music events took place but also the City Council met here. Today, this extraordinary building can be rented exclusively from the museum's administration outside of the official opening times. To underline the authentic atmosphere, the staff serves drinks and snacks in style with Roman clothes. A truly memorable event for the congress opening!

The Caravanserai, Kusadasi The Caravanserai, Kusadasi is from the 16th Century. Here are regularly held elaborately orchestrated Turkish evenings. The unique show presents a selection of traditional Turkish Folklore music and dance, oriental belly dancing and many traditional and modern styles too. The event is accompanied by a banquet dinner that according to our instructions exceeds the standard by far.

26

2016 World Congress of Herpetology Kusadasi Turkey Ephesus Convention Center During major conferences or international exhibitions, the four interconnected rooftop terraces are equal to the task, easily converting into banqueting facilities to accommodate up to 10,000 in style. These terraces are designed to offer planners maximum flexibility and the opportunity to make the most of the Aegean’s 300 days per year of sunshine. Whether for a seated banquet or a cocktail prolongé, you have the option of using all four terraces, just one, or a combination of two or more, allowing you to tailor the space to the needs of your event.

Social events To give the WCH participants greatest possible flexibility in managing their stay outside the formal sessions, we propose as a common social event only the congress opening and the closing banquet. Nevertheless, there is always the possibility to organize social events. This may be a barbecue or even boat trips. Due to the flexible and professional organization in Kusadasi, such events can be planned at short notice. The costs will be kept within manageable limits.

Kusadasi – The Greater Experience Kusadasi is located in the center of Turkish Aegean seaside. Around 70,000 people are residents of the city, but truly during the summer season Kusadasi accommodates many people more. Reason for this is per sure that Kusadasi offers best conditions for beach tourism as well as for cultural tourism. More than 100 hotels and hundreds of guesthouses and hostels are open for travelers who want to enjoy the bland climate of Aegean seaside and the perfect Turkish hospitality. Furthermore Kusadasi is the popular starting point to explore the historical treasuries of the ancient

33

2016 World Congress of Herpetology Kusadasi Turkey Ionian coast. For many years Kusadasi is in the same time a center for national and international congresses. All of the big four and five star hotels are offering congress halls and meeting rooms. Up-to-date technical equipment and most professional services were always self-evidence. By the new opened Ephesus Convention Center Kusadasi now is the biggest location for congresses in Turkey and number ten in Europe. The city itself was founded, although already in ancient times settled, in the 13th century. During the medieval ages Kusadasi was known as Scala Nova and used by the Genovese and Venetians as a trading hub. The name Kusadasi consists out of ‘ku ’ (bird) and ‚ada‘ (island) so that one can say the translation of Kusadasi is ‘Bird Island’. In fact some dozens of meters in front of the coast there is an island which has the shape of a bird’s head. The city obtained its current name in the beginning of the 20th century. In present times Kusadasi enables every kind of leisure activity. Favored in the day time of cause are various kinds of water sports and beach activities. For sociable and culinary experiences one can choose out of thousands of authentic or modern bars and restaurants. Dominating here are the delicious Turkish cuisine and fish restaurants. But one can find also different European and Asian cuisines as well. Don’t fail to go to one the simple cook-shops. Here typical home made meals are served and usually behind every cook-shop there is a family who prepares the meals according to traditional recipes. Very common also is to stop in at a pub where live music is presented for the late evening. Usually there is - except for special events no entrance fee. Summarizing Kusadasi can be seen as a perfect destination with accommodations in every price level and leisure facilities to cater for all tastes. Located at the fascinating Aegean coast and in reachable distance to several natural and historical sites Kusadasi guarantees an unforgettable stay.

Medical Care and Safety Furthermore, just in case of emergency, Kusadasi offers excellent medical care. Pre- and Post Travel Ephesus/Selcuk Ephesus is one of the most impressive ancient sights and archeological excavation sites worldwide. The roman city of Ephesus is known as one of the biggest cities in the turn of the eras (more than 200,000 citizens). The location of the ancient city today is an outdoor museum with many attractions mainly out of roman period. Some kilometers far from the city there is the House of Virgin Mary, according to legend the place where Mary the mother of Jesus spent her last years. Nearby too is the Seven Sleeper Cave. Again according to legend here seven young Christians escaped from persecution around 250 AD. They fell asleep and when they woke up again, about 150 to 200 years later, they got aware, that the region now was Christian and they were not in danger anymore. On the way to Selcuk is the Temple of Artemis. From this temple, which is one of the seven wonders of ancient world, today just one column is left. From here about one kilometer near the center of Selcuk you can find the Basilica of St. John. The basilica was built in the 6th century on the believed burial site of John the Apostle.
