ASU Ballroom Beginners’ Competition FAQ

Am I required to attend? Some classes require participation in the Beginners’ Competition to obtain skills examination credit, while other classes allow using the Beginners’ Competition as the in-class group project. Consult your instructor’s syllabus for more details. Additionally, if you are signed up to dance Newcomer or Bronze at UNLV’s Desert Challenge on April 22–23, you must register to dance the same heats at the Beginners’ Competition.

What is this “Scholarship Multi-Dance” thing? Devil DanceSport wants to make sure that ASU has its best Newcomer dancers on the floor when we go to compete at Las Vegas on April 22-23. To ensure that, we are offering a six-dance multi-dance event where the top three couples get discounts in their Las Vegas registration packets. This event is restricted to Newcomer competitors only—no sandbagging! The couple that wins the multi-dance heat will receive $50 off Las Vegas travel per person. The second and third place couples receive $30 off and $20 off per person respectively. These discounts will be on top of any other Newcomer discounts or travel subsidies you may otherwise be eligible for. If you decide to compete for the Las Vegas discount, you will be asked to dance all six dances comprising the event: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, and East Coast Swing. (No, you do not get to pick and choose which dances you want to dance in. You must dance all six with the same partner.) Important: If you win a discount towards Las Vegas travel, and you elect to not go to Las Vegas, you will forfeit the discount!

Where do I turn this in? Please return the packet and your registration form to your instructor or to a Devil DanceSport officer in one of the Latin/Swing/Ballroom classes by Tuesday, March 29th. Space may be limited, so turn in your forms early to secure your spot!

Attire What shoes should I wear? While you are dancing, dance shoes make the best option as they move well on the floor. If you do not have dance shoes, you should wear shoes that move freely on the floor (i.e., they do not stick). We do not recommend high heels that are not made for dancing. Do not wear flip-flops or any other shoes without ankle support, as you can get injured very easily if you are not careful.

Forms due March 29th, 2016

What clothes should I wear? If you are attending in preparation for Desert Challenge at UNLV you should wear what you are planning on wearing for that competition. (If you do not know what you should wear for UNLV, talk to members of Devil DanceSport or check the Intro to Competition packet linked below.) If you are not planning on attending Desert Challenge you should wear something you can move comfortably in. If you are wearing a dress or a skirt, you should wear shorts, spandex, or other concealing attire, since all skirts can (and do) ride up.

How should I do my hair? Ladies should do their hair in a fashion that will keep it out of their face while they are dancing and will not hit their partners in the face.

Competitive Dancing How does a competition work? The main idea behind the beginners’ competition is to show you how competitions work, so the first hour of the competition will be a competition preparation workshop. If you would like to read ahead, we have a very nice Introduction to Competition packet on our website at www.devildancesport.com/resources.

This was fun, how can I dance more? Devil DanceSport organizes many social and competitive opportunities. By joining Devil DanceSport you gain access to free weekend dance lessons; weekend dance trips to places like San Diego, Los Angeles and Las Vegas; and countless social dance opportunities. Full information on how to join is included later in this FAQ, and at www.devildancesport.com/membership.

This is my first competition. Will I have to compete against the scary people who live at APMA 132 Level III students? No, you will be able to compete in a separate Newcomer category. Newcomer is limited to “dancers who have never competed or have been dancing less than one year,” which includes most people in the Latin/Salsa I, Latin/Swing/Ballroom I, and the Country Western I classes. For anyone who has danced for more than a year, we will also allow sign-ups for the Bronze category, which ranges from Level I to Level II students. (Note: if you signed up to compete Bronze at UNLV, you are required to sign up for Bronze at the Beginners’ Competition!) If you are a Newcomer and are feeling extra bold, we will let you sign up for both Newcomer and Bronze! For our Silver-level dancers and above, we will be having one two-dance Multi-Dance event in every style, to show our new competitors how multi-dance heats work. As an added benefit, our Newcomers get to watch how good they can get if they continue taking classes in the ASU partnership dance program. We need Silver dancers and above to help us staff/judge the event. Event staff will receive double points in the DDS Travel Subsidy point system (for more details, see the next FAQ entry), and these points can be applied towards Las Vegas travel. Contact your friendly neighborhood DDS officer for more details, or email [email protected].

Club Questions Will I get subsidy points if I attend / help out? All competitors will obtain 15 points of ASU Event credit in the Devil DanceSport travel subsidy point system. Anyone who helps staff the event will obtain 30 points of ASU Event credit. These points will be usable for travel to the UNLV Desert Challenge competition in April 22–23.

Do I have to join Devil DanceSport? If you are not planning on competing in any of the travel competitions (such as San Diego on March 5, Riverside on April 16, or Las Vegas on April 22), and are not planning on making regular use of the weekend lessons or practices (i.e. show up for two weekends or more), you do not have to join the Devil DanceSport club. If you are planning on competing with the team in out-of-town intercollegiate competitions, or if you want to come regularly to the club’s practices on Friday nights, or to the lessons on Saturdays and Sundays, ASU policy dictates that you must register for the club.

How do I join Devil DanceSport? The process to register as a member of Devil DanceSport is much simpler than it was in previous years: 1. Go to http://dosportseasy.com/sundevilsports/join.php?h=dancesport 2. Fill out all the forms (there is more than one page of forms!). Make sure to have health insurance information handy; if you are planning on driving, also have your driver’s license and vehicle registration info available. You must fill out the Driver Info form if you are planning on driving, or we will bark at you! 3. Check your email for a confirmation link (make sure to look in the spam folder!) 4. Pay the $25 Spring Sun Devil Sports fee to complete your registration. You can pay it at the admin desk on the first floor of the SDFC. • If you already paid this fee to register for another sport club during the spring semester, you don’t have to pay it again! • If you are a current on-campus student and don’t need to purchase a SDFC membership, you can also pay the $25 fee online by going to www.devildancesport.com/paynow. If you need to verify whether your registration was finished properly, of if you need any other kind of assistance, contact [email protected].
