Mad Hot Ballroom Gala The Third Year

Proceeds to Benefit

DancingClassrooms Lake Charles ~ August 2012

MHB Welcome to the third annual Mad Hot Ballroom Gala, benefiting Dancing Classrooms. As in years past, tonight’s gala is sure to be a success! I commend everyone for the countless hours of work that went into preparing for the show. Each couple chose their own style of dance, choreography, costumes, and music. Community celebrities, paired with experienced dancers, have spent countless hours practicing, and all of this hard work is done voluntarily because the participants have seen and understand what Dancing Classrooms does for our area. The ongoing mission of Mad Hot Ballroom is to offer Dancing Classrooms to every 5th grade student in Southwest Louisiana. After tonight’s performances, I am confident that you will share the same enthusiasm for this worthy cause. Thank you wholeheartedly to our sponsors that made the 3rd Annual Mad Hot Ballroom possible:

MHB Dancing Classrooms Southwest Louisiana In 2008, I began looking for a way the Whistle Stop could serve more children in our community. I had seen the movie “Mad Hot Ballroom” on HBO in 2005 and several times since. I researched it up on the internet and ended up on the link to American Ballroom Theater, the non-profit organization that provides Dancing Classrooms. After reading more about it, I learned that it is a social development program that utilizes ballroom dance to teach 5th grade children the social skills they need to be successful in middle school and in life. I sent an email to John Ross, the National Network Director asking how I could bring Dancing Classrooms to our community and a plan was set in motion. In November, I accompanied three Teaching Artist candidates to New York City for a week of intense training with Pierre Dulaine. Dancing Classrooms started in Kaufman, Oak Park, Jennings Elementary, Sacred Heart and two schools in North Louisiana in January, 2009. Over the past two years, Dancing Classrooms has grown very fast to include 24 schools, serving over 1,500 5th grade children annually. The Whistle Stop has also added an after-school/summer program for students who want to continue their dance education. It includes a 2nd and 3rd year curriculum, the DC Dance Company performance group, and a Competition Team. This year, 18 couples competed in the USA Dancesport Competition in Baton Rouge. The group brought home 107 ribbons and medals, including 16 gold. All after-school programs use the Dulaine Method of teaching which continues to build self-confidence while teaching courtesy and manners. The benefits of the program have far exceeded our expectations. Principals love it because it changes the behavior of their students, builds self-confidence, and teaches children how to be ladies and gentlemen. Students love it because it’s fun and many of them realize a sense of accomplishment when they have learned a new step or a new dance. The 2012-13 school year promises to be more successful than ever. Our goal is to bring in a total of 26 Calcasieu Elementary Schools and to establish a site coordinator in Jeff Davis parish to help our neighbors develop the Dancing Classrooms program in their schools. Please support this effort and help us bring Dancing Classrooms to all children in Southwest Louisiana. The children of our community need your help. Please give generously so Dancing Classrooms is available to all 5th grade classes in the Lake Area.

Dancing Classrooms ~ Lake Charl The Dancing Classrooms program was launched in 1994 by world-renowned ballroom dancers Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau, as a not-for-profit project of the American Ballroom Theater Company. An arts-in-education/life-skills program, Dancing Classrooms uses ballroom dance to build social awareness, confidence and self-esteem in children. Dancing Classrooms residencies are integrated into the school day; 5th grade students meet with their Teaching Artist twice a week for ten weeks. The program utilizes a syllabus of ballroom dance that nurtures mastery of an art form in a fun learning environment, while fostering respect, teamwork, confidence, politeness, and a sense of joy and accomplishment. Essentially, it "teaches life skills wrapped up in ballroom dance."

“The endless stream of not-so-common courtesy is part of Dulaine’s system. We say ‘Thank you, partner; hello, new partner,’ We want to instill in the children the idea that they are ladies and gentlemen”. Pierre Dulaine

les ~ Colors of the Rainbow ~2012 As a special activity, each school in the Dancing Classrooms program has the option to participate in a city-wide team match, the Colors of the Rainbow. At the close of each course, students audition to participate, and twelve students advancing to the competition. The schools are identified by colors, with ladies wearing colored sashes and the gentlemen wearing colored cards pinned to their backs.

“Our teaching philosophy is one of inside-out versus outside-in. The program is not just about teaching dance, it’s about teaching pride, confidence and respect. We take the dance that is inherent in students’ bodies and help them to bring it out, not force it in, enabling students to increase their selfesteem as they learn”. Pierre Dulaine
