INFORMATION & INTRODUCTION TO CCEP PROGRAM

PRIMARY SCHOOL CCEP

As an international all-day school, it is our responsibility to offer our Primary School students an educational and recreational program every day to function as a complement to more formalized class time. The CoCurricula Educational Program (CCEP) gives our students the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and develop and extend existing skills in fields of interest. The goal of the Co-Curricula Educational Program is to create additional educational options outside of the regular school program in order to foster individual talents and passions. At the same time, our core mission consists of cultivating a sense of students’ individual identity, stoking their thirst for knowledge, promoting dialogue with one another, and fostering a sense of community between students from different backgrounds and religions. The Co-Curricula Educational Program is a social-pedagogical department of the Berlin Metropolitan School and offers students of the Primary School a comprehensive educational, developmental, and supervisory program that both complements and supplements their daily classroom time. Our international team for the Primary School is comprised of a host of professionally educated individuals and is furthermore supported by German youth completing their voluntary civic service (Freiwiliges Soziales Jahr, or FSJ). The CCEP’s goal is to provide BMS students an inspirational and educational environment, one in which they can discover and further develop their passions and interests through our multifaceted and diverse Club Program. We approach education as a process of self-determination. For this reason, we create learning spaces and a safe environment within which students can actively and creatively engage, and perhaps most importantly, intimately connect learning with fun. Alongside the extension and expansion of learning and educational possibilities, the CCEP Team’s role is to offer support during classroom time. Established during the 2012-2013 school year, the In-Class Assistance (ICA) program assigns each Primary School classroom a CCEP Educator, whom forms an important part of each respective teaching team. The CCEP Educator, similar to the Homeroom Teacher, is responsible for the social and emotional well-being of all students in each class. Furthermore, the CCEP offers the Primary School a varied and engaging holiday programs, complete with field trips in and outside Berlin, sports and exercise activities, as well as a number of creative workshops for every interest.

IN-CLASS ASSISTANT PROGRAM As previously described, the role of the CCEP Educator in the In Class Assistance Program has both social and pedagogical functions. The focus of this daily work is first and foremost the social and emotional wellbeing of each student. Other primary functions of CCEP Educators include devoting extra attention to children with special educational and behavioral needs, the development of student social needs, and support in the inclusion of all students. Following its successful implementation in the 2012-2013 school year, we have optimized the In-Class Assistant Program in order to better meet the educational, emotional, and social needs of our students. Furthermore, CCEP Educators accompany the students on field trips and excursions and also provide additional learning support in the classroom as necessary. Our CCEP Educators are an important part of each class’ Teaching Team and help form the framework for the best possible support of each and every one of our students.

CCEP ROOMS FOR PRIMARY STUDENTS A clear organizational system – based upon students’ grade level – is the ideal basis for guaranteeing both safety measures and age-appropriate educational and developmental support in the implementation of the CCEP. Furthermore, such a system of organization lends more order and structure to both students and parents alike. Grades 1-2: Rooms 1.07 | 1.09 | 1.10 Grades 3- 4: Rooms 2.02 | 2.03 | 2.04 Grade 5: Rooms 3.09 | 3.10 Grade 6: Rooms 4.09 | 4.10 Through this organization, the CCEP staff and rooms can offer more custom-tailored support and activities to students’ based upon developmental and cognitive level. Daily, direct content with their corresponding CCEP Educator also guarantees the students not only support and safety with a known, trustworthy individual in the afternoon, but also functions in bridging the divide between the classroom time and the afternoon program. Such a framework also offers educational project space for students – together with their corresponding CCEP Educator – to revisit and further engage with themes and topics they cover in the classroom. A new rule effective since 2015-2016 academic is that Primary School students must spend their time exclusively in their respective CCEP Grade area, in CCEP Clubs, or on the playground after checking out with a CCEP Educator. Last but not least, parents additionally benefit from more transparency in knowing precisely where their child is, as well as have a better connection to their students’ respective CCEP Educator.

AFTERNOON PROGRAM The goal of the CCEP Afternoon Program between the afterschool hours of 3.00pm and 6.00pm is to create further educational opportunities outside of the daily school hours in order to foster students’ interests and passions. At the same time, our core mission consists of strengthening students in their personalities, maintaining their thirst for knowledge, promoting dialogue with one another, and fostering a sense of community between students from different backgrounds and religions. For this reason, our goal is to create a complementary balance between free, supervised play and club offers. In consideration of the needs of our international community, the CCEP Afternoon program is conducted bilingually, in both English and German. In this way, students that are new in Berlin, or to German as a foreign language, can practice and employ German in the CCEP in a more informal context. Through past experience, we know this affords students an important opportunity to acquire and become more confident in their German language abilities. Moreover, the international orientation of our team is maintained, as each CCEP Educator and Club instructor can seamlessly switch between functional proficiency in German and English, in addition to a number of additional foreign languages contingent upon personal background and experience.

Free Play - Recreational Time The CCEP grade level rooms function as an important social sphere for Primary School students to interact with peers of their age group, as they combine students across grade levels. This allows students to make friends outside their homeroom class and deepens connections within the school community as a whole. After a full day of formal education, students require recreational time. During this phase of the school day, children learn at their individual tempo, deepening their knowledge in their personal fields of interest, as well as further engaging with impressions and knowledge gained from school peers, lessons, clubs, and projects. We are confident that alongside the more formal educational offers of BMS, free time, in which students can exercise independent freedom of choice, is crucial. For these reasons, we not only offer students use of the CCEP grade level specific rooms, but also supervision of the school playground, where students can engage in sports and other interests.

The CCEP therefore sees recreational time, otherwise known as free play, as an important part of both personal and sociocultural development. One of the central goals of our program is the promotion of self-esteem, confidence, and the growth and maturation of each student. It is our belief that such qualities are particularly encouraged through free play. “Requirements for an emotional and intellectual balance of the child is that it in everyday life finds a field of activity in which it is not all about adapting to the reality, but on the contrary to the assimilation of the reality of the self, without compulsion and sanctions: exactly this is free play.” (Jean Piaget, Cognitive Theorist and Educational Epistemologist)

Clubs We offer a broad spectrum of educational opportunities within the framework of the Co-Curricula Educational Program. We encourage all students to enroll in their allotted maximum of three clubs per semester. Due to the diversity of activities on offer – such as clubs and projects that take place at different times throughout the year, as well as open offers and recreational time – we ask parents to plan carefully when choosing an activity together with their children. The goal of the CCEP is to promote our students’ overall wellbeing and cultivate their interests. We strive to strike a healthy balance between formal instruction and afternoon club activities in order to generate a strong learning environment. The content and form of the CCEP Club Program places emphasis on the physical and cognitive development of our students, in addition to the promotion of individual student talents and passions. In order to allow our students to experience and explore more of their interests over the course of one school year, we have reduced the running time of some clubs to one half-year. For this reason, please pay attention to the scheduled duration of clubs when registering. We offer students the following options in our CCEP Program: clubs, projects, open offers, and recreational time.

BMS Sports Clubs One primary focus of the CCEP Clubs is the Sports Program. In past surveys, students have consistently made clear that they wish to have several organized sports and fitness activities available. BMS internal sports clubs are more informal in nature and therefore do not involve official competitions with other schools. Owing to their high demand, we offer CCEP Sports Clubs for Basketball, Chess, Soccer, Table Tennis, Cross Country, Gymnastics, Capoeira, Chess, Fencing and Martial Arts. BMS Sports exist for every grade and are divided variously into women, men, or mixed teams. There are also occasional special events for the Sports Clubs. In furnishing some examples, there was the visit of the DFB-Mobil team or training sessions with professional players of our cooperation partner Alba Berlin Basketball.

BMS Sports Teams – “BMS HAWKS” We avidly root for and throw our full support behind the various BMS Sports Teams called BMS HAWKS. In this more formal capacity, students selected for the BMS Sports Teams represent the BMS school community at official events and compete against other schools and institutions in both league and tournament games. The players for the teams are generally recruited from BMS Sports Clubs. To this end, we have changed and aligned the grade level structure in order to better prepare our students and school for tournaments and competitions. After a very successful start in the previous school year, we aim our focus in the upcoming school year to both regional and national games and tournaments. This not only includes local games and tournaments in Berlin, but also those within Germany and in European neighboring countries.

Participation in official events such as the Drumbo Cup Berlin, Alba Grundschulliga, “Jugend trainiert für Olympia”, or the “Berliner Friedenslauf”. Beginning in Grade 4, BMS students begin to participate in official games and tournaments against other local schools from Berlin–Mitte. Starting in Grade 5 we also focus matches and tournaments in Germany our European neighboring countries. There are U 10 Teams comprised of students born in 2006 and younger; U 12 Teams comprised of students born in 2004 and younger; for Basketball, Football, and Table Tennis. BMS Cross Country has no age limitations. Organized internal school events and matches such as grade level tournaments, or Staff vs. Students games. BMS Chess Juniors from Grades 2 to 4 will start to participate as a team in the Berlin Chess School League in the U 10 category. In addition, a girls’ team will be formed for “Rapid Chess” events. Although the BMS girls’ team will consist of only U10 players, they will sometimes compete against high school teams.

Club Exhibition Within the structure of a “Club Exhibition“, we will give students and parents the opportunity at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year to meet and engage with each and every respective club instructor. At this time, students and parents can discuss each club and program in greater detail, ask questions, and obtain a general overview about all courses on offer. This ensures that students and parents make the most informed decision possible when selecting and registering for clubs. The Club Exhibition will take place on September, 16th at 3:30pm.

Club Selection Process The club selection process will be made less overwhelming this year owing to the Club Exhibition. This in an opportunity for students and parents alike to learn more about the specific clubs and instructors and to personally learn more information about the content and offers. In addition to live examples and presentations, this introduction will give students a more informed idea about instructional content, methods, and instructors. Owing to the sheer number of clubs taking place this year, the CCEP Club Exhibition will take place for one afternoon, and will give students and parents an overview to each club. A few days after the closing of the Club Exhibition, the selection process will begin via our online booking portal. Parents will receive a separate email with a website link to allow you to activate your account and make booking(s). For this procedure a login or password is not needed. When making your decision, please be aware that club selection is processed along on a first come, first serve basis. While all clubs have a limited number of spots available, we work hard to ensure that all students’ at least receive their first or second choice. As a matter of principle, however, we cannot guarantee any student spots in specific clubs. General Information and Recommendations to the Club Selection Process Every student from Grade 3 on can select up to three clubs. For a balanced and age-appropriate daily schedule, we recommend a maximum of two clubs for students in Grades 1 and 2. Please select clubs together with your children and ensure to have a few „backup“ clubs on hand, in the event that a club you would like to register for is already booked. Many of the clubs run for only one semester, thereby allowing other students the opportunity to enroll for the same club during the second semester. Although we cannot make any guarantees, we remain committed to trying our very best to register each student for at least one of their favorite club. Online Club Registration: September 18th 2016 Beginning of the 2016/17 Club Program: October 4th Please Bear in Mind: • Students in Primary from Grade 1 -2 have the opportunity to choose a maximum of 2 clubs per semester. • Students in Primary form Grade 3 have the opportunity to choose a maximum of 3 clubs per semester • Student schedules should be taken into consideration when choosing clubs. • Activities that involve extra fees are subject to separate agreements. • Registration can only be processed online and during the given time period. We ask that you take this into consideration when registering. • Club selection is processed along on a first come, first serve basis. • We cannot make any guarantees, we remain committed to trying our very best to register each student for at least one of their favorite club. • We are happy to answer any questions you may have via either telephone or email.

Projects The projects of the Co-Curricula Educational Program are available to all students and take place over a set period of time during the school year. Primary and Secondary School students may choose freely among the projects and they do not count as part of the three allotted clubs. The focus of the projects lies in fostering school community by reaching across class and age groups, as well as supporting students’ imagination and creativity. The projects respond to a variety of students’ needs and, along with the club options, reflect the comprehensive nature of the Co-Curricula Educational Program. Projects will be advertised throughout the school and announced via bulletin board, email and assemblies.

CCEP Student-Led Projects In order to embrace and actively incorporate IB principles and philosophy into our Co-Curricular Educational Program, we are now introducing CCEP Student-Led Projects. Student-Led Projects are CCEP afternoon activities completely planned, organized, and implememented by BMS Secondary School students. The maximum amount of time for a project is three months, though most projects typically have between four to six meetings, with one meeting happening per week. Individual students or groups of students decide the maximum 8

amount of participants and for which grades their content is most appropriate. To ensure that the each student project will be a success, one member of the CCEP Team will function as a mentor for the student or group of students who decide to offer a project. The mentor advises and consults with student leaders and functions to resolve issues and answer questions, such as the best way to proceed or implement a project. Students are welcome to present their potential project concept to the CCEP. As each Student-Led Project is completely unique and individual, ensure that you read through the available offers when emails regarding these projects are sent. Student-Led Projects will be advertised throughout the school and announced via email; registration will take place through the school bulletin board or email.

CCEP Game Day Three times per week, CCEP Educators offer children the opportunity for group-led games during the lunch break and the afternoon on the playground. Under the watchful eyes of CCEP Educators, students will finetune their motor and coordination skills, activate social and emotional faculties, and most importantly, have fun! The group games of Game Day complement recreational time, in order to maximize social experiences and activities during their free time. With Game Day, the children will also receive the opportunity to interact with students outside their primary classroom and therefore create new friendships with fellow students. Game Day as an open, voluntary offer is available to all children of the Primary School.

School Holiday Program We offer extensive programs with a wide range of activities during the summer-, fall-, and Easter holiday breaks. In addition to providing supervision and games during the holidays, we also offer interesting field trips, excursions, workshops, and a multitude of sport activities.

STUDENT SERVICES Language Games In the Language Games Club, we will give students the opportunity to playfully use and practice the German and English languages. This course will be offered to students who are new to either German or English or both. The students will take the lead in creating the context in which they want to learn. The purpose is for students to apply their new language in a relaxed environment; one that is both meaningful and authentic for them. Depending on the students’ wishes and interests, learning will occur spontaneously. In furnishing some examples, this can occur during role-play, while playing a board game, or when drawing a comic. A qualified actor‘s trainer from the CCEP team will guide students and offer a variety of unorthodox opportunities for the students to speak and listen to both German and English. The purpose of this program is to create spaces in which students affective filter is lowered; in other words, so students feel comfortable and confident using the primary languages of the BMS community. For this reason, only a limited number of students will be chosen by their teachers as potential candidates.

Language Courses After we successfully integrated German into our Language Program last year, we will begin to offer Korean instruction as an additional foreign language in this academic year. This will be the sixth to our diverse CCEP Primary School language program portfolio, which now include courses in Spanish, Italian, French, Mandarin Chinese, German and Korean.

Homework Club We offer a grade level specific space for homework. Our CCEP Educators from particular Primary School grade levels will be selected in order to offer students’ support for homework. In each of our areas, we have designated a room for this specific purpose. Through dialogue and conversations with Homeroom Teachers of each grade level, we will further support student engagement and participation in this offer.

PARENTS SERVICES German Language Classes for Parents This is a German language course designed for BMS parents with limited to no previous knowledge of German. This will be a light and informal way for parents to learn some useful phrases, or to deepen their extant knowledge of German, while simultaneously meeting new people within the BMS school community. Berlinische Galerie The Berlinische Galerie of one of the youngest museums of the German capital and houses art deriving from 1870 up through the present moment. Distinguished collections of the Galerie comprise Dada Berlin, the „New Objectivity“ and the East European Avantgarde. Other focuses of the permanent collection include art of a divided and reunited Berlin. Apart from the permanent collection, The Museum of Modern Art, Photography, and Architecture also offers a varied special exhibition program. In addition to an archive, library, and lecture rooms, there is furthermore an art school for children, youth, and adults contained within the Atelier Bunter Jakob. The Berlinsiche Galerie, in cooperation with the Youth in Museum organization, offers students of BMS a multifaceted program of holiday workshops. The main goals of these workshops are creative experimentation and the appreciation of art. CHIMOSA – Martial Arts The concept of Chimosa unites the seemingly antithetical notions of stillness and movement, traditonal and modern, and the East and the West. Children and youth will be offered martial arts and sports courses that combine traditional Asian educational methods with Western scientific approaches. It is particularly important to Chimosa to place value not only on physical conditioning, but also holistic personal development in a pedagogical sense. In addition to teaching exercise and self-defense, they therefore also cultivate important attributes such as self-discipline, the ability to work in a team, endurance, respect, patience, integrity, diligence, and empathy. These are character-building qualities that children and youth should learn in order to distinguish themselves, and such qualities are essential to success in school, college, and professionally. For holistic growth in martial arts, Chimosa has developed a innovative and unique concept. Woo!Zen is not one specific martial art, but rather a philosophy that stands for holistic development. Each Woo!Zen trainer is a specialist in one or more martial art disciplines and integrates his or her particular emphasis in instruction. Nevertheless, Woo!Zen draws from elements of modern and classical Kung Fu, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, BJJ and Taekwondo; in courses, aspects of each are meaningfully integrated into a coherent whole and as such, offer students comprehensive training to becoming a „complete martial artist.“ Through such training, students and youth will furthermore learn from multiple perspectives and develop a problem-solving mentality that will be advantageous in other aspects of life. After passing a final examination, there is a graduation system to move up within the hierarchy of Woo!Zen classes. Further information can be found in the club description of this offer contained in this booklet. ESMT The European School of Management and Technology in Berlin is among one of the best business schools in Germany, featuring one of the most international business faculties. Its MBA students are actively engaging in community projects in Berlin. Each class features around 60 students from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds that join the program with a focus on innovation, technology, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Graduates of the program enter management leadership positions in various industries with some of the best companies in the world, or alternately, start their own enterprises. This year, we will begin a pilot project with ESMT students that focuses on career advice and professional guidance. Further information about the club can be found in the project descriptions contained in this booklet. Embassies Since 2012, BMS has been working in close cooperation with a number of Berlin-based international embassies and consulates in the context of our cultural and educational events series. From concerts with the male choir from Yale University (Yale Alley Cats) and Brighton High School in Australia, to various readings or lectures, we have already a number of interesting cultural events to our name. In the 2016-2017 academic year, we want to continue to move forward with such collaborations owing to our international community at BMS, especially when coupled with our World Heritage Ambassador Club and other events at BMS. HABA The HABA digital work station is a creative educational and experiential space in the heart of Berlin. At HABA, children between the ages of five and fourteen years of age can playfully explore and develop important proficiencies in the field of new technology. The digital work station offers regular courses and special workshops by seasoned Media Educators and Trainers, under whom children can learn to program, build robots, use 3D printers, design animation films, and much more! KUNSTHALLE by Deutsche Bank Housed in the former Guggenheim Museum on Unter der Linden, Kunsthalle by Deutsche Bank offers workshops in contemporary art to BMS students. Further information to the specific workshops will be advertised throughout the school as they arise and will additionally be sent to parents by email. To create access to art and to foster creativity—these are the main goals of the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle’s educational program. In tandem with each exhibition, the KunstHalle provides a tailor-made art program for kids, youths, and families. Under the guidance of experts and experienced artists in workshops of one or several days and in school holiday programs, kids and youths can paint and draw, make comics and collages, work on performance and dance pieces, or create a documentary or animated film. Everything revolves around discovery and experience, honing the perception, and independent artistic activity. The focus in our family programs is on a playful and creative approach to the respective exhibitions’ many themes. The goal is to experience, understand, and produce art together that creates new points of view and fosters social competence Korean Educational Institute The Korean Educational Institute (Koreanisches Erziehungsinstitut in Deutschland, KEID) was established by the Korean government in 1981 to promote Korean education in Germany. The primary goal of the KEID is to support Korean courses at schools and Korean language schools in Germany. Owing to the sheer number of clubs taking place this year, the CCEP Club Exhibition will take place for two consecutive days, and will give students and parents an overview to each club. While all clubs have a limited number of spots available, we work hard to ensure that all students’ at least receive their first choice. As a matter of principle, however, we cannot guarantee any student spots in specific clubs.

New Arrivals Students who arrive at BMS during the school year will find extracurricular options in consultation with the CCEP Coordinator. The students, parents, and CCEP Coordinator will select the activities together based on availability.

Projects will be advertised throughout the school and announced via email; registration will take place through the school bulletin board or email.

Special Events In partnership with MINT Impuls, we will introduce in the upcoming school year a Science Cafe as an interactive informal platform. Every last Tuesday of every month, MINT Impuls will organize an informal Science Cafe at BMS. Topics and subjects will vary according to which expert is there on a particular Tuesday. If you have any questions, repair problems, or even difficult homework you think might benefit from the input of our experts, feel free to join the café crowd. Or maybe you just want to chat with someone about what it is they actually do all day? The Science Café will begin on November 29th, 2016 and are open from 4:00pm till 5:30pm; the experts participating are announced the week prior. Otherwise, there is no previous sign-up required.

Capoeira Capoeira combines both dance and combat. Historically speaking, African slaves that were forcibly transported to Brazil during the South American country’s colonization created Capoeira. As slaves were forbiddenfrom engaging in any kind of martial arts, they were forced to hide such physical training. They therefore tooktheir African ritual dances and incorporated exercises to train their speed and agility. Capoeira is known as amulti-disciplinary art - it involves martial arts, songs, music, and dance. Furthermore, capoeira training includeselements from other performance art forms such as maculelè and samba de roda. Teacher: Lourival Pereira dos Santos Maximum Participants: 16 Capoeira 1: Preschool - Grades 1- 2 (Mixed) | Wednesdays 3:15pm - 4:15pm Duration: one semester with the option to rebook for a second semester after the first term.

Gymnastics Gymnastics means training your body to move uniformly and steadily. In our club, we will work and train in both groups and independently according to the particular exercise. We will develop our abilities for movement through engaging with artistic gymnastics, which include events such as the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercises. Some of the primary goals of the Gymnastics Club include increasing flexibility and cultivating skills such as balance and control. The course is designed for all children, regardless of skill level. Students should bring normal sport attire and sport shoes with them to class. In the laboratory, we will answer questions from daily life with fun, clever ideas and competent scientific support. The children will be able to form hypotheses, independently carry out experiments, observe, describe, make assumptions, and combine facts and data to arrive at conclusions. Guided by the methodology of the inquiry-based approach, students will discover the solutions to various scientific secrets in biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and the geosciences. Science Lab sessions will follow a series of themes, ending with a final presentation for parents. Some course content will vary as it may be based upon seasonal change and the time of year. Woo!Zen Kids - Basics Woo!Zen is a combination of various martial arts and sports. Fitness exercise and techniques from Kung Fu, Kick Boxing, Judo, and other martial arts are harmoniously linked in order to improve speed, power, endurance, reaction and coordination. In today‘s busy lifestyle, children rarely get the chance to try out their basic motoric skills. But it is essential to get to know one‘s physical abilities and be able to rely on the own body in case of a sudden fall or in situations where children need to grasp something. In the Woo!Zen Club, the primary goals are health, happiness and the holistic aspect of martial arts. Above all, respectful treatment of others is promoted to keep the philosophy of martial arts intact. During training, respect, concentration and discipline will also be central themes. The innovative and unique concept of Woo!Zen is not one specific martial art, but rather a philosophy that promotes overall holistic development. CHIMOSA instructors place value not only on physical conditioning but also holistic personal growth in a pedagogical sense. Accordingly, they teach not only exercise and selfdefense, but also cultivate important attributes such as self-discipline, the ability to work in a team, endurance, respect, patience, integrity, diligence and empathy. Through such training, students and youth will furthermore learn from multiple perspectives and a problem-solving mentality that will be advantageous in all aspects of life. These are character-building qualities which support success in school, college and professional life. 18

Yoga Club Yoga for children is taught in a playful manner, with Asanas learned through postures of familiar animals or objects, or are connected to through stories, poems, and songs. In these ways, children easily can develop an understanding of basic Yoga practice. Children will also learn the various elements of Yoga practice (awareness, breathing training, meditation, concentration, reflection, positions, and ethical principles) as they enjoy moving their bodies. Yoga is not just about physical and mental fitness, but also about returning to oneness: being one with yourself, with others, and with your surroundings. In our goal-oriented world, where we are too often divided into winners and losers, thoughtfulness and the connected pleasures of living are often forgotten. This is something that will be brought into this Yoga club so that a small change can take place. At the beginning, the children will learn basic Asanas, such as cat, dog, table, tree, and turtle, and these positions will be deepened over the course of the club to a point where each child will be able to remember the poses on their own. In addition, the children will learn breathing techniques, short meditation practices, and can try partner massage with a friend. After a binding registration, the instructor will contact you in order to handle financial arrangements. Expenses include a one-time fee of €150 for the semester. This club will not take place if fewer than 5 students are registered for it. The Ballet Club was conceived and designed with three consecutive levels that build sequentially off one another. Students should come to class with ballet slippers, leotards, tights, and/or leggings as well as hair bands and/or hair clips. Creative Writing The course Creative Writing stresses creativity and techniques that help to generate imaginative writing. This course has less to do with theoretical analysis, and more with active, experimental writing and the experience of the writing process; it is less results-oriented, and more free testing of various methods. Indeed, stream-ofconsciousness writing, automatic writing, collective writing, associative writing, reductive writing, and further techniques will be used in order to overcome the fear and anxiety of the blank page (or increasingly, the blank screen). There will be fun with words, neologisms, phrases, syntax; language and its endless possibilities of expression will be playfully awoken in this course. The literary and historical origins of writing techniques – such as automatic writing and surrealist writing – will also be considered. Primarily, Creative Writing focuses on the exploration of one’s own creative possibilities and the fun had when letting one’s thoughts flow freely. The techniques covered in the course are intended to enable precisely this. Teacher: Michael Schorr Maximum Participants per Club: 10 Creative Writing: Grades 6 - 9 | Thursdays 3:45pm - 5:15pm Duration: entire school year

Da Capo (Beginner to Intermediate Instrumental Ensemble) Would you like to make music with your friends? World Heritage Ambassadors Club What does culture mean to you? What is ethnic and cultural heritage and why is it worth protecting? What is your heritage and what countries are you most interested in learning about? These are just a few of the topics we will explore together in the World Heritage Ambassadors Club. By combining World Heritage with the Ambassadors club, we will be working together with cultural ministries, museums, embassies, and local communities in order to discover and celebrate the diversity within our student body. Students will have first hand exposure with diverse cultural products, such as food, folk dress, and performances, allowing them to encounter other forms and displays of culture. If they wish to do so, students are encouraged to present their own ethnic heritage, while also learning about the heritage of others within their communities and around the world. We will critically analyze concepts of cultural value, elements of power, and empowerment through group discussions, films, and small research projects. Students will experience many cultures of the world and distinguish between the various forms of heritage, such as intangible cultural heritage, which is song, dance and storytelling, as well as tangible cultural heritage like architectural and environmental landscapes. Sewing Club In this course, we will first learn the basics and begin with sewing by hand. We create objects such as pillows, book covers, doll clothes, and hand puppets. This phase involves learning the various needed stitches, both decorative and standard. Following the handwork, the children are introduced to the sewing machine and start with a simple piece of material and choose to create a shoulder bag, pillowcase, or apron. Anyone who handles the machine well and with care can then move on to imagine and sew their own ideas, such as beautiful costumes or a chic pair of pajama pants. Alternatively, students could take some older clothes and create something new out of them. It is at this point that both creativity and skill come together. The course concludes with a small presentation and fashion show at the end of the school year. Lego Mindstorm Lego Mindstorm aims to make the abstract concrete; in other words, it brings concepts to life with a kinesthetic, hands-on approach that engages students. Lego Mindstorm converts numbers, words, and ideas into real models that can be touched, described, and enhanced. By making subjects tangible, Lego Mindstorm encourages self-guided learning and giving students the tools they need to overcome challenges. As they work on Design Engineering projects, students become the engineers. Each student is grouped into small teams: first, students brainstorm ideas for solving a design challenge, and then build, program, and test their model to evaluate how well it works. After trials, they must troubleshoot and improve their model. As they are learning and having fun, students are applying science, technology and mathematical skills and are developing technical language and other cooperative and communication skills while working within their team. Teacher: Matthias Salvagnin Maximum Participants: 12 Robot Club: Grades 4 - 5 | Tuesdays 4:00pm - 5:30pm Duration: entire school year

LANGUAGES Mandarin Chinese With well over one billion native speakers, Mandarin Chinese is quickly becoming one of the most important languages in the globalized world. Mandarin Chinese has an enchanting, tone-based rhythm, pictorial characters, and wise philosophical maxims. The advantages of learning Mandarin are numerous: studying a character-based language offers visual learners greater chances for student success, and there are a number of cognitive benefits generated from studying a language radically different to one composed of the largely Eurocentric Roman and Latin alphabet (such as English, German, French, Spanish, Italian). Moreover, learning Mandarin Chinese offers students the later opportunity to jumpstart a career in what is primed to become the world’s largest economic market. In our club, students will learn all about this important language. Students will not only engage with the various tones, characters, and words, but also discuss both the traditional and 28

French Any language is learned and retained more concretely when words and sentences are linked to something that has personal meaning for the student. For example, combining words or sentences with a melody, a sound, a movement, a drawing, or a color allows students to better understand and remember vocabulary. In this course, we use everything that helps learners to build these bridges in their memory. Images, books, songs, small dance movements, and games will help children engage with the beautiful and romantic French language. Students will develop a sense for the French language, learning to speak French step-by-step. We will also utilize this approach in the advanced classes, employing similar techniques as in classical language classes, such as speaking, reading, writing, and listening, as well as visually expressing and summarizing information. Italian A language is always part of a story, a narrative surrounding the shades of meaning of every word in it. A language is also the line that binds all these stories together. Learning new vocabulary couched within the telling of a story provides the opportunity for the creative production of images and imagination, and gives student the opportunity to better access and retain these new words. In the Italian club, we will mainly use this instructional technique of learning a language through story telling. In this way, the basic structures and fundamental phrases of the language will be put into the context of a meaningful and entertaining fiction. Traditional Italian fables, fairy tales, and short stories will be our daily nourishment, which will be handled in class both visually and playfully. Many other interactive activities such playing games, drawing and watching animations and short films will be combined to our narrative approach in the study of the Italian language. Teacher: Francesca Caligiuri Maximum Participants per Club: 12 Italian Club: Grades 2- 6 | Wednesday 3:30pm - 4:30pm Duration: entire school year Upon registration, students’ current Italian language competences will be assessed in an age- and child appropriate manner. Capoeira Capoeira combines both dance and combat. Historically speaking, African slaves that were forcibly transported to Brazil during the South American country’s colonization created Capoeira. As slaves were forbidden from engaging in any kind of martial arts, they were forced to hide such physical training. They therefore took their African ritual dances and incorporated exercises to train their speed and agility. Capoeira is known as a multidisciplinary art - it involves martial arts, songs, music, and dance. Furthermore, capoeira training includes elements from other performance art forms such as maculelè and samba de roda. PROJECTS Art Workshops@KUNSTHALLE by Deutsche Bank Housed in the former Guggenheim Museum on the Unter der Linden, Kunsthalle by Deutsche Bank offer workshops in contemporary art to BMS students. Further information to the specific workshops will be advertised throughout the school and will additionally be sent to parents by email.

Art Workshops@BERLINISCHE GALLERY In addition to an archive, library, and lecture rooms, there is an art school for children, youth, and adults contained within the Atelier Bunter Jakob. The Berlinische Galerie, in cooperation with the Youth in Museum organization, offers students of BMS a multifaceted program of holiday workshops. The main goals of these workshops are creative experimentation and appreciation of art.

Language Games In the Language Games Club, we will give students the opportunity to discover, explore, and play with both German and English. This course will be offered to students who are new to either German or English, or both. The students will take the lead in creating the context in which they want to learn. The purpose is for students to practice and apply their new language in a relaxed and informal environment; one that is both meaningful and authentic for them. Depending on the students’ wishes and interests, learning will occur spontaneously. In furnishing some examples, this can occur during role-play, while playing a board game, or when drawing a comic. A qualified actor trainer from the CCEP team will guide students and offer a variety of unorthodox opportunities for the students to speak and listen to both German and English. The purpose of this program is to create spaces in which students’ affective filter is lowered; in other words, so students feel comfortable and confident exploring the primary languages of the BMS community. Language Acquisition theory has proven that the existence of a lower affective filter translates to more improved acquisition and retention of secondary languages. BMS is running this course for the first time as a pilot program this year and for this reason, only a limited number of students will be chosen by their teachers as potential candidates. Teacher: Magret Kotte Maximum Participants: 10 Language Games Club: Mondays 3:00pm - 3:45pm Time period: November 2017

GUIDELINES OF THE CCEP - PRIMARY SCHOOL It is our goal to fulfill each student’s first choice with regards to clubs, although this is not always logistically possible. In the event that a club is overbooked, a waiting list will be created. Late registrations will be accepted and processed based on the availiability within the selected clubs. Registration will take place online and within the specified time period: Club Exhibition: September 16th, 2016 - BMS Cafeteria (3:30pm - 6:00pm) Online Club Registration: September 18th, 2016 (8:00pm) - September 26th, 2016 (until 9:00am) Start of the Club Program: October 4th, 2016 Registrations received prior to the designated online club registration period will not be given priority. Club selection is processed on a first come, first serve basis. Students are allowed to choose a maximum of three clubs per semester. It is not possible to switch clubs in the middle of the semester. At the beginning of the second semester, students will have the opportunity to choose some new club(s). Each registered student commits to regular attendance of her or his chosen club(s). Each student will receive an online confirmation regarding her or his club(s). A minimum of eight participants is needed in order to form a club section. In some cases – due to the collaboration with external partners – withdrawing from the club may either not be possible or may incur costs. Withdrawing from a club must be carried out in writing and in consultation with the CCEP Director. Any absence from club activities requires a written excuse. External obligations that prevent participation in a club have to be communicated to the teacher in a timely manner. Two unexcused absences may result in student expulsion from the club and the spot being given to another student. Beginning in the third grade, students will be independently responsible for attending their clubs. The same rules that govern classroom behavior apply in all CCEP clubs. All students must adhere to the BMS Code of Conduct, and by joining a club, students agree to uphold this code. Primary School students must spend their time exclusively in their respective CCEP Grade area, in CCEP Clubs, or on the playground after checking out with a CCEP Educator. Please arrange pick-ups and instrumental music lessons directly with the music schools. All activities that take place outside of the school grounds, such as sailing, are associated with transport costs that must be covered by participants. Please be aware that times and locations as well as the content of clubs and projects are subject to change at any time due to unforeseen circumstances or collaboration with external partners. Although we try our best to preclude such changes, we thank you in advance for your understanding in this matter.

INFORMATION & INTRODUCTION TO CCEP PROGRAM

SECONDARY SCHOOL CCEP

As an international all-day school, it is our responsibility to offer our Secondary School students an educational and recreational program every day to function as a complement to more formalized class time. The Co-Curricula Educational Program (CCEP) gives our students the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and extend and enhance existing skills in their fields of interest. The goal of the Co-Curricula Educational Program is to create additional educational options outside of the regular school program in order to foster individual talents and passions. The CCEP’s goal is to provide BMS students an inspirational, educational environment outside of classroom time and allow them the opportunity to discover and further develop their passions and interests through our multifaceted and diverse Club Program. We approach education as a process of self-determination. For this reason, we create learning spaces and a secure environment within which students can actively and creatively engage, and perhaps most importantly, intimately connect learning with fun.

AFTERNOON PROGRAM The goal of the CCEP Afternoon Program between the afterschool hours of 3.30pm and 6.00pm is to create further educational opportunities outside of the daily school hours in order to foster students’ interests and passions. In this way, students that are new in Berlin, or to German as a foreign language, can practice and employ German in a more informal context. Through past experience, we know this affords students in that position an important opportunity to acquire and become more confident in their German language abilities. Moreover, the international orientiation of our team is maintained, as each CCEP Educator and Club instructor can seamlessly switch between functional proficiency in German and English, in addition to a number of additional foreign languages contingent upon personal background and experience.

Clubs We offer a broad spectrum of educational and support activities within the framework of the Co-Curricula Educational Program. We encourage all students to enroll in their allotted maximum of three clubs per semester. Due to the diversity of activities on offer – such as projects that take place at different times throughout the year as well as open offers and recreational time – we ask parents to plan carefully when choosing an activity together with your children. The goal of the CCEP is to promote our students’ overall wellbeing and performance in the afternoons. We strive to strike a healthy balance between formal instruction and afternoon club activities in order to generate a strong learning environment. The content and form of the CCEP Club Program place emphasis on the physical and cognitive development of our students, in addition to the promotion of individual student talents and passions.

Owing to their high demand, we offer CCEP Sports Clubs for Basketball, Soccer, Table Tennis, Cross Country, Cheerleading, Fencing, Boxing and Martial Arts.

• Participation in official events such as the Berliner Feldrunde, Alba Oberschulliga, “Jugend trainiert für Olympia”, or the “Berliner Friedenslauf”. • There are U 14 Teams comprised of students born in 2002 and younger; U 18 Teams comprised of students born in 1998 and younger; for Basketball, Football, and Table Tennis. • BMS Cross Country and Cheerleading Team have no age limitations has no age limitations. • Organized internal school events and matches such as grade level tournaments, or Staff vs. Students games.

Projects In the two years since we introduced the successful Secondary School projects, and this year we have selected the most popular from last year and increased their capacity. The projects of the Co-Curricula Educational Program are available to all students and take place over a set period of time during the school year; in the Secondary School, this typically runs from December to April. You will obtain more information about projects in the descriptions contained in this CCEP Booklet. Secondary School students may choose freely among the projects and they do not count as part of the two allotted clubs. The projects respond to a variety of students’ needs and, along with the club options, reflect the comprehensive nature of the Co-Curricula Educational Program. Projects will be advertised throughout the school and announced via email; registration will take place through the school bulletin board or email.

Language Courses After we successfully integrated Mandarin Chinese into our Language Program last year, we will begin to offer Korean instruction as an additional foreign language in this academic year. This will be the fourth to our diverse CCEP Secondary School language program portfolio, which now include courses in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese and Korean.

School Holiday Program In addition to providing supervision and games during these holidays, we also offer interesting field trips, workshops, and a multitude of sports.

German Language Classes for BMS Parents Beginning in the upcoming school year, we will introduce our first CCEP afternoon offer for parents. This is a German language course designed for BMS parents with limited to no previous knowledge of German. This will be a light and informal way for parents to learn some useful basic phrases, or to deepen their extant knowledge of German, while simultaneously meeting new people within the BMS school community. You can find further information about this course in the club description section of this booklet.

CAS CAS lies at the heart of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The acronym CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service, and complements the challenging IB academic program in a holistic way, providing

opportunities for self-determination, collaboration, volunteering, and accomplishment. CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal growth and maturation as a responsible young adult and global citizen. Students must engage in CAS experiences involving all of the three CAS strands as a prerequisite for graduation from the IBDP. Opportunities for accumulating CAS experience are also structurally integrated within the CCEP program, primarily through Student-Led Offers.

Specials Every last Tuesday of every month, MINT Impuls will organize an informal Science Cafe at BMS. Topics and subjects will vary according to which expert is there on a particular Tuesday. If you have any questions, repair problems or even difficult homework you think might benefit from the input of our experts, feel free to join the café crowd. Or maybe you just want to chat with someone about what it is they actually do all day? The Science Café will begin on November 29th, 2016 and are open from 4.00pm till 5.30pm; the experts participating are announced the week prior. Otherwise, there is no previous sign-up required.

Exam Week During exam weeks, all clubs and projects are cancelled.

Partnerships ALBA Berlin Originally BG Charlottenburg, the franchise Alba Berlin was founded in 1991. Since their inception, the club has played in the German Basketball League (Bundesliga) and a number of different European tournaments on their way to fame. In 2012, they became recognized as the best basketball team in Germany. Now, with eight Bundesliga championship titles behind them, Alba is now one of the most successful German basketball franchises of all time. Additionally, with countless victories in various European competitions, Alba is also recognized as one of the best basketball teams on the European international stage. This year, in cooperation with coaches from Alba Berlin, we will enhance and improve our Basketball offer and BMS’ entrance in the Berlin school league as Alba-BMS Berlin. Co-Curricula Educational Program 2016/2017 | © BERLIN METROPOLITAN SCHOOL

Embassies Since 2012, BMS has been working in close cooperation with a number of Berlin-based international embassies and consulates in the context of our cultural and educational events series. In the 2016-2017 academic year, we want to continue to move forward with such collaborations owing to our international community at BMS, especially when coupled with our World Heritage Ambassador Club and other events at BMS. ESMT The European School of Management and Technology in Berlin is among one of the best business schools in Germany, featuring one of the most international business faculties. Its MBA students are actively engaging in community projects in Berlin. Each class features around 60 students from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds that join the program with a focus on innovation, technology, sustainability, and personal development. Graduates of the program enter management leadership positions in various industries with some of the best companies in the world, or alternately, start their own enterprises. The collaboartion is focused on career advice and professional guidance for BMS IB Students. Further information about the club can be found in the club and project descriptions contained in this booklet. Instituto Cervantes The Spanish government founded the Insituto Cervantes in 1991 with the dual goals of promoting the Spanish language and acting as a cultural agent of Spanish and Latin-American countries globally. Since then, this nonprofit, public foundation has established 77 institutes in over 41 countries worldwide. All teachers at the Instituto Cervantes Berlin are Spanish or Latin-American native-speakers. They possess a University teaching certificate and are experienced and specialized in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. The teachers take part in regular continuing education courses and utilize the most current teaching trends. All participants will have access to the AVE Online course and receive a free Instituto Cervantes library pass. This CCEP offer includes additional costs. Further information can be found in the club description of this offer contained in this booklet. Korean Educational Institute The Korean Educational Institute (Koreanisches Erziehungsinstitut in Deutschland, KEID) was established by the Korean government in 1981 to promote Korean education in Germany. The primary goal of the KEID is to support Korean courses at schools and Korean language schools in Germany. The KEID also encourages collaboration between German and Korean educators for enhancing mutual understanding between the two countries. (http://www.keid.de/) MINT Impuls Originally a parent initiative at BMS, MINT Impuls seeks to stoke and enhance young people’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, the so-called STEM subjects (MINT in German) in Berlin and Brandenburg. MINT Impuls does this by organizing exciting events, as well as various made-to-measure projects in schools, from informal Science Cafés to building structural partnerships between schools, businesses, and scientific institutes. Projects are conceived and executed by representatives of the STEM practice, meaning that people with a scientific background working for instance as a scientist, engineer or computer programmer, visit schools, talk about their profession, and teach classes. They provide 10 - 18 year olds with inspiring insight into their lives in general, and demonstrate that if you want to have an interesting job and make a difference in the world, whether this is by researching more efficient ways of producing energy, designing more useful electronics, or devising how to better supply water for dry areas, considering a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths is an excellent idea.

DESCRIPTION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ACTIVITIES CLUBS Coding Programming is the easiest way to learn how to code. It‘s interactive, fun, and you can do it with your friends. Why should every child learn how to program? Technology is radically changing every aspect of society, whether it be the way we access information to how we navigate our daily lives. Digital literacy is now a fundamental skill in the contemporary world, similar to traditional literacy skills such as reading and writing. By learning to program, students can actively participate and decide how software will inform and shape their world. Furthermore, programming teaches important reasoning, logic, and communication skills. True to the IT age, coding is an online-based project and will be guided remotely by a host. Teacher: Matthias Salvagnin Maximum Participants: 15 Coding 2: Grade 6-7 | Mondays 4:30pm - 5:30pm Duration: one semester.

Debating & Performance Art What is truth? This workshop is all about communication. How you talk. How you listen. How you write to make a point. How you read between the lines. Debating is a tool that helps us find strength in the depths of our analysis. We will use various debating formats to examine many new and interesting topics about human interaction. Debating asks us to expand limited perceptions about an issue to see it from more perspectives. How do we best share knowledge when we discover truth? Debating can learn a lot from performance art, and vice versa. Performance art includes giving speeches. It includes discussions, making decisions and coming to a shared understanding. Performance art encourages spontaneity and creativity. It requires the performing artist to heighten their levels of awareness. Performance art and debating come together in this workshop to provide participants with a powerful communication toolkit that they will carry within them for the rest of their lives. The topics will come from philosophy and contemporary politics. In the workshops, it is not about how much you know, but rather about what you do with that which you already know: You. This course is appropriate for all learners. Weekly workshops will be held in ,Denglisch,‘ with a mixture of German and English as is appropriate for the class. The course is aimed at grades 6-11. However, this course is theoretically open to all ages, so if you are reading this and think the learner would be enthusiastic about this course, they are welcome to join or try it out. This course is well-combined with the meditation club on Wednesdays. Teacher: Micha Aleksander Brooks Maximum Participants: 14 Cartooning Club: Grades 7-11 | Mondays 3:45pm - 5:15pm Language: E/G Duration: entire school year

mBots In mBots, abstract concepts are made concrete by using tangible elements. Scratch – a free visual programming language - is used by students, scholars, teachers, and parents to easily create interactive stories, games, and animations. Scratch and its diverse online community provide a stepping-stone to the more advanced world of computer programming. Scratch can also be used for a range of educational and entertainment purposes, such as math and science projects in simulations and visualizations of experiments. One such example of this is mBots, which are able to move, play, and draw. Through mBots, students can connect the worlds of programming and the practical; they see the results firsthand with mBots. The ability to code computer programs is an important skillset in the modern, digital age. When students learn to code in Scratch, they learn important strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas. With the help of a little rooter named mBot you will find that taking the first - and second and third - step in building and programming your own robot is actually great fun. In this course, we will build and program mBots. Co-Curricula Educational Program 2016/2017 | © BERLIN METROPOLITAN SCHOOL

During this course, students will be able to express their own interests and research them, giving a short presentation of their findings at the conclusion of the course. Boxing will be advertised throughout the school and announced via email; registration will take place through the school bulletin board or email.

PROJECTS Drama Class - Scenic Plays In the development of a play, club participants will engage with the written word, assume roles, and improve personal composure and confidence. Accordingly, the primary focus of this club is the collaborative development of monologues, dialogues, and specific scenes. The results of this „work“ will ultimately take center stage in a performance that we present for an audience. In the beginning phase of the club, the „player“ will utilize proven pedagogical theatrical methods in order to learn more about themselves on stage and to explore their own „room for play“. While the entire club involves every „player“ in communication, each member has her or his own part to contribute and each is an integral component of the overall „whole“. Playing roles and engaging in pedagogical theater exercises will offer the „players“ the opportunity to explore their individual strengths and abilities and to creatively express these. Students will also learn how to communicate the emotionality of their lines. Through the development of their drama and the expression of different roles, students will come to understand how form, text, and feeling connect to one another. In this way, the literature of the theater will teach them how to overcome individual barriers.

LANGUAGES Chinese (Mandarin) With well over one billion native speakers, Mandarin Chinese is quickly becoming one of the most important languages of the globalized world. This important language has an enchanting, tone-based rhythm, pictorial characters, and wise philosophical maxims. The advantages of learning Mandarin are numerous: studying a character-based language offers visual learners greater chances for student success, and there are myriad cognitive benefits generated from studying a language radically different to one composed of the largely Eurocentric Roman and Latin alphabet (such as English, German, French, Spanish, Italian). Moreover, learning Mandarin Chinese offers students the later opportunity to jumpstart a career in what is primed to become the world’s largest economic market. In our club, students will learn all about this important language. Students will not only engage with the various tones, characters, and words, but also discuss both the traditional and modern culture of this land. Famous songs, fairy tales, poems, and sayings will also be learned in a playful atmosphere. GUIDELINES OF THE CCEP - SECONDARY SCHOOL It is our goal to fulfill each student’s first choice with regards to clubs, although this is not always logistically possible.
