Only then does it develop those aromas and flavours that we all crave, like: cedar, lead pencil, leather, barnyard. . . Don’t drink your wines too young! Let Rooftop take the risk out of cellaring for you. We offer mature wines that you can enjoy today. Rooftop Cellars is British Columbia’s premier importer of aged Bordeaux. We import small quantities of mature wine for discerning buyers in British Columbia. Our primary customers are restaurants, private wine shops, and private collectors. With the price of fine wine sky-rocketing, you will find that you can purchase many of our mature vintages for less than you would pay for the same wine in the current vintage. Our specialty is finding old and rare vintages of Bordeaux. Grand Cru Classe wines from Bordeaux are the best of the best. These are the wines that collectors from around the world seek out. There are a number of different classifications that indicate wines of Grand Cru Classe quality - each for a different appellation or set of appellations: The 1855 Classification for the Left Bank Wines, the Pessac-Leognan classification, and the St. Emilion classification.

However, simple inclusion in a classification is not a guarrantee of quality because some of the classifications are not regularly updated.

So, we present below a

selection of Grand Cru Classe wines of quality that are ready to drink now.

Description: If you have always wanted to taste a Ch. Lafite, Ch. Latour, or Ch. Mouton Rothschild from Pauillac but could not justify the cost, then this is the wine for you. Ch. Croizet Bages is maybe the only value priced Paulliac of quality. It is a Grand Cru Classe from Paulliac and it offers great value in good vintages.

Description: This château is situated next to Château Beauséjour-Bécot on the desirable western limestone plateau of St. Émilion.

SKU: 401208

750ml x 6 | $222.16 | WS90

SKU: 811257 Tasting Notes: “The 1990, a stunning effort for this property, offers further proof of just how successful 1990 turned out to be for St.-Estephe. Very dark ruby, with a tightly knit nose of black fruits, this massively endowed wine is one of the most powerful and concentrated Lafon-Rochets I have tasted. Patience will be required with this offering. Anticipated maturity: 19982022.” 89 points (Robert Parker - Feb 1993).

“A bit rustic but very concentrated. Dark ruby color, with ripe berry and dried currant aromas. Full-bodied and chewy, with lots of fruit and a medium finish. Needs a bit of time.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2004.” 90 points (James Suckling - August 2000).

Tasting Note: “This wine has turned out even better than I had expected, continuing this estate’s progression in quality that began several years ago. The dark ruby color is followed by sweet, elegant notes of black currants, cherries, spicy oak, and cedar. The wine is medium-bodied, with sweet tannin, and a moderately long finish. Purely made with good depth, it represents one of the more forward Pauillacs of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 20032014.”

Tasting Note: “The 1996 is a flamboyant, dark ruby/ purple-colored wine with a soaring bouquet of plum liqueur, toasty new oak, black cherries, smoke, and dried herbs. In the mouth, evidence of sur-maturite jamminess and richness emerge from this medium-bodied, rich, spicy, impressively-endowed wine. There is tannin in the medium to full-bodied finish. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2014.” 89 points (Robert Parker - April 1999)

Tasting Notes: “Oozing with blackberry, cedar, raspberry and coffee aromas. Fullbodied, with silky tannins and a caressing finish. Needs more time. It’s a little chewy. Relax and let it happen. Well done for the vintage.” 91 points (James Suckling – 2007) “Opaque black-ruby. More brooding aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice and smoky oak, plus stony and mineral nuances; slight hint of exotic fruits. Lowerpitched than the ‘97, but with penetrating flavor and terrific vivacity. A floral note and a suggestion of chalky terroir contribute to the wine complexity. Finishes with firm but even tannins. . . should age slowly and gracefully.” 89-91 points. (Stephen Tanzer – June 1998)

2eme Grand Cru Classe -

SKU: 186809 Description: Château Gruaud-Larose is my favorite wine from Bordeaux. I like it, no - I CRAVE it - because, among the left bank wines, it has the most pronounced and intoxicating nose of that quintessential Bordeaux aroma - call it “stinky” if you want - I think the technical definition is “barnyard” - but, personally, I call it “Bordeaux funk”. Tasting Note: “In the bottle, Gruaud Larose appears to have returned to the form it possessed when I first tasted it from cask - a stylish, surprisingly civilized, medium-bodied wine without the muscle and power expected from both this terroir and vintage. It still possesses excellent density, as well as roasted herb, licorice, and black currant flavors intermixed with incense-like smells. The wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, rich, and forward. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.” (Robert Parker)

Description: This Châteaux is on the main road into St. Emilion on good terroir near Ch. Figeac. This wine has matured surprisingly well and is drinking beautifully right now. It is a great value. There are no professional tasting notes on this wine so I have included my note from Bordeaux last year. Tasting Note: “Beautiful glowing colour of a mature wine. Still quite opaque with just a bit of bricking. Medium intensity aromas on the nose that are dominated by red cherry fruit with a touch of vanilla, wood, and chocolate. Medium bodied on the palate with a good acidic structure for a merlot dominated wine. Darker fruit profile in the mouth where the chocolate flavours come through. Overall nice balance. Good acidic structure will make this best with food. 89 points” (Michael Cody - April 2010)

SKU: 11841 Description: Château La Croizille is located on prime terroir on the St. Émilion plateau near Ch. Troplong Mondot, Ch. Tertre Rotebeouf and Ch. Pavie. It has been widely recognized by the European wine press. It has more structure and aging potential than most Right Bank wines because of its high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (30%). It spends 18 months in new oak barrels. Tasting Note: “The 2001 is opaque dark red and has the look of black printer’s ink. The nose has an amazingly complex blend of dark roasted black fruit, chocolate and earthy scents. It is a medium- to full-bodied wine with supple mouth feel, balanced acidity and concentrated sweet black fruit flavours. It is just beautiful. It will keep for at least another 5 years.” 90 points (Michael Cody – April 2008)

Tasting Notes: “I had this wine at L’Envers du Décor in St. Emilion in the late summer of 2009. It is drinking beautifully right now. This is a silky and elegant wine with layers of flavour. This is a buy right now and drink wine. Great example of elegant St. Emilion.” 94 points (Michael Cody – August 2009).

“The 1999 is an elegant, finesse-styled, medium-bodied effort revealing lovely strawberry and currant fruit with a hint of sour cherries, a judicious touch of oak, medium body, and excellent purity. It creeps up on the taster in subtle increments. I always laugh when critics of Michel Rolland, the great international oenologist who has done so much to improve wine quality throughout the world, say that his wines all taste the same. Do these ignorant observers realize he is the consultant for this stylish, restrained St.-Emilion? Anticipated maturity: now-2015.” 89 points (Robert Parker – April 2002).

Description: Ch. La Clemence is a small 2.8 hectare estate in Pomerol that makes only 600 to 800 cases a year. The wines are made from 50 year old vines that are hand harvested and hand sorted. There are six plots to the estate and each plot is vinified in a separate thermo-regulated 35 hectolitre wooden tank. The wine is 85% Merlot and 15% Cab Franc. The wines are made by consulting winemaker Michel Rolland. Tasting Note: “This looks to be the strongest effort to date from the DauriacRolland team. Deep, opaque purple-colored, with a tight but promising nose of truffles, licorice, underbrush, incense, and black fruits, this big, huge, dense, full-bodied Pomerol shows no compromising for readers looking for something immediately drinkable. As the French would say, a true vin de garde. This backstrapping, muscular wine is loaded, but patience is most definitely a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022+.” 91 points

SKU: 391276 Tasting Note: “A property on the rebound now that the winemaking is controlled by Stephane Derenoncourt’s wife, the deep ruby/purplecolored 2001 La Tour Figeac offers up aromas of fresh figs intermixed plums, cassis, licorice, smoke, and cherries. The complex aromatics are followed by a plush, rich, medium to full-bodied, powerful as well as elegant claret revealing soft tannin in its lusty finish. Drink it over the next 12-13 years.” 90 points

Tasting Notes: “An elegant, dark ruby/purple-tinged effort displaying notes of tobacco smoke intermixed with sweet currant, cherry, and some toast, this medium-bodied wine has the hallmark purity married graciously with nicely concentrated fruit. The tannins are sweet but present and give definition to this well-made Pessac-Léognan. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016.” (Robert Parker – April 2005)

(Robert Parker - June 2004).

“Good ruby-red. Pure, tight aromas of spicy black fruits and licorice. Primary and bright, with pure, cabernetdominated flavors of currant and spice. Has extract, but comes across as a rather masculine Haut-Bailly, with very firm acids. Finishes persistent, firm and aromatic. Likely to develop in bottle for 15 to 20 years.” (Stephen Tanzer – June 2004)

“Second Wine” is a term that refers to a wine that is made from grapes that are not selected to go into a Château’s top wine (Le Grand Vin). Usually these wines are made from younger grapes or from grapes grown on less desirable plots on the Château’s property. These days, with stringent selection processes being applied at most top châteaux, second wines can be of almost Grand Cru Classe quality - especially the second wines of the top estates like: Les Forts de Latour (Latour), Carruades de Lafite (Lafite), and Clos du Marquis (Leoville Las Cases) - to name a few.

If you always wanted to try a top Bordeaux but cannot afford it - the second wine is the way to get an affordable sneak preview of what the Grand Vin tastes like.

(2nd Wine of Ch. Pontet

SKU: 113506 This wine is an incredible bargain. From the 2005 vintage and it shows. Hugely concentrated with ripe fruit and burly structure. This wine will be ready much sooner than the Grand Vin. Drink now and for the next 3-5 years. A great example of a 2005 value second wine.

This wine was the LA Times Wine of the Week in Feb 2008: “A second label of Château Calon-Segur, Château Marquis de Calon is a relative bargain in the overpriced Bordeaux market. If you want to see what the highly touted 2005 vintage is all about, try this delicious Saint-Estephe. Lush and velvety, it’s ready to drink now. So when you feel like drinking a Cabernet blend, break out a bottle of the 2005 Château Marquis de Calon at about half the price of the big dog Calon-Segur. Maybe make that two bottles. Share them with friends over a crown rib roast, prime rib or a hanger or skirt steak. Beef and Bordeaux were made for each other. And at this price, you can afford to indulge more often than not.”

This wine is a bargain compared to the Grand Vin. Concentrated ripe fruit ombined with good structure and that signature ethereal Margaux nose. Enjoy for the next 3-5 years. Another great example of a 2005 value second wine .

Tasting Note: “Bright and plummy on the nose, with a hint of raisins. Full-bodied and very ripe, with firm tannins and a medium finish. Needs bottle age. Second wine of Château PontetCanet. Best after 2006.” (James Suckling 2003)

“Very intense garnet robe. Powerful nose with notes of red fruit. On the palate a full and very round attack, lots of supple fleshiness and volume balances a smooth tannic structure, where the Merlot shines through. Long finish. A fine second wine. “ (Provided by the Château)

The term Cru Bourgeois refers to a classification of Bordeaux wines of good quality that were not included in the 1855 classification of Grand Cru Classe. This is the quality level of Bordeaux wines that usually contains the best value. Some Cru Bourgois properties consistently produce wine that equals Grand Cru Classe quality at about one-half of the price. This is also the quality level that begins to be affordable for the majority of us. The Cru Bourgeois classification has changed alot over the last 10 years as a result of legal battles involving the French government and Château owners. To make it simpler for you we include in this category level all wines that would have traditionally been in the 2003 classification scheme.

Tasting Notes: “Aromas of tobacco, berries and cherry, with coffee bean undertones that follow through to a medium-bodied palate. Good tannins and a medium finish . . . “ ( James Suckling – 2007)

Description: Château Lanessan consistently produces wine that transcends its Cru Bourgeois status. The key is its location. Ch. Lanessan is the first Châteaux south of the appelation border of St. Julien. In fact, its vineyards share a property line with the vineyards of Ch. Gruaud Larose (2eme GCC - St. Julien). The wine is made in the classic Bordeaux style for long aging.

Lanessan is the first Châteaux south of the appelation border of St. Julien. In fact, its vineyards share a property line with the vineyards of Ch. Gruaud Larose (2eme GCC - St. Julien). The wine is made in the classic Bordeaux style for long aging.

Tasting Notes: “Lanessan’s 2001 is a consistent overachiever in Haut-Medoc. This wine nearly rivals the outstanding 2000. It is a seriously-extracted, dark ruby/purple-colored offering with ripe cassis fruit, notes of leather and earth, and a hint of truffles. It is mediumbodied, pure, and savory, with copious tannin. It will age well for 10-15 years.” 87-89 points

Tasting Note: “A sleeper of the vintage, Lanessan’s 1996 boasts an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color, and knock-out aromatics of melted chocolate, asphalt, and cassis. Deep, rich, and medium-bodied, with excellent concentration and purity, this impressively-endowed, flavorful, wellstructured wine should be at its finest between 20042016.” 88 points

Tasting Note: “A delicious, complex effort, the fully mature 2000 Lanessan offers notes of cedarwood, plums, loamy soil, and damp earth, medium to full body, plenty of spice, and a classic Bordeaux personality. It should drink well for another 7-10 years.” 88 points

“Superb Colour and concentration. Nice looking young wine. Nose is a little muted right now. Great body with tons of fruit. Very well balanced tannins combined with almost the perfect amount of acidity. This will age very, very well. Elegant wine. Import some.” 88 points

“Opaque purple-colored, with moderately high tannin yet excellent sweet black currant fruit, this mediumbodied, well-structured, muscular, densely packed Poujeaux will require 7-8 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015.” (Robert Parker – February 1998)

The finish lingers for a surprising amount of time. This is drinking extremely well right now. Drink in the next 2-5 years. 89-90 points. (Michael Cody – April 2008)

“The which has a slightly more saturated ruby/purple color than the 2001, is fleshier, with a more substantial mouthfeel. Exhibiting sumptuous fruit, ripe tannin and a seamless texture, this serious Haut-Medoc is equivalent to many classified growths.” (Robert Parker – April 2003)

Description: This Château is located right in the village of Soussans in Margaux. The wine has a large proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and spends 12-15 months in oak, 50-70% of which is new each year. Tasting Note: “The 2000 is still a youthful deep rubyred colour. It has an intense expressive nose of cassis, red fruit, vanilla and oak. Exceptional. The nose was the most pleasant I experienced in my recent trip to Bordeaux. Medium-bodied with great mouth feel and a strong tannic structure that will allow it to continue to age for at least 8-10 more years.” 90 points

SKU: 176818 Description: Ch. Beaumont is located just south of the St. Julien appellation border sharing a fence line with the more famous Château Gruaud Larose. It has the same owners as Château Lagrange and Château Beychevelle and outperforms its Cru Bourgeois classification in good vintages. The 2005 may be the best wine ever made at this Château. Tasting Note: “Soft and velvety, with blackberry, mineral and light mint character on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with a caressing texture. There’s lovely balance to this. Best after 2011.” 88 points

Tasting Note: “This is a concentrated wine from a good vintage that is drinking well right now. What is not to like about it? It got three stars from Decanter, costs $29 a bottle, and comes in six packs. Cru Bourgeois wines of this quality are normally $40-$50. The Pierre di Montignac is 50% cabernet sauvignon and 50% merlot and is just a touch softer and more full in body than the Ch. La Branne.” (Michael Cody - April 2010)

The term ‘Petits Châteaux’ refers to the collection of 9,000 or so smaller estates in Bordeaux that make good wine at reasonable prices but that have a difficult time selling it because they are not located in a prestigious appellation, part of a classification scheme, and have little resources to support marketing and export. Luckily for us, these Châteaux often still have back vintages available. Every year when we travel to Bordeaux we taste 200-300 mature petits Châteaux wines looking for the hidden gems that meet our price/quality standards. Most years we only find 2-3 wines amongst this group. Below you will find our current selection of mature Petits Châteaux wines from Bordeaux. We have provided our own tasting notes on the wines because you probably will not be able to find a professional tasting note on them.

Description: This is a classic mature red Bordeaux from the Medoc that is drinking well. The wine is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. At just $28.00 a bottle - It is very hard to find good aged Bordeaux at a lower price.

SKU: 11874 Description: Finding a mature Bordeaux that costs $20 a bottle is next to impossible. In fact, in all our trips to Bordeaux we only ever discovered one. This one. Why is it $20? There are three reasons: It is from a less recognized vintage (2002), it is Bordeaux appellation level (lowest quality level), and it has a really (and we mean REALLY) ugly label. The label on this wine is so ugly that we would rather keep it a mystery. If you have seen it - you will know what we are talking about. However, disregard the label. The wine in the bottle is surprisingly good for a mature Bordeaux that costs $20. Tasting Note: “This wine is 55% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. Ruby red with a medium intensity nose of red fruit and earth aromas. Med to light bodied with good structure and round fruity flavours. This is a nice drinking wine for a very reasonable price. Enjoy with food.” 86 points

Description: This wine is made by Maison Malet Roquefort who also owns two St. Emilion Grand Cru Classe estates: Ch. La Gaffeliere and Ch. Tertre Daugay. I tasted this wine on multiple occasions and I was impressed by it every time. The key is the age of the vines on this estate which average over 35 years. This is an offering for those who like their Bordeaux wines a little younger. Tasting Note: “Ruby red colour with good density. Bright and youthful. Medium intensity nose with fragrant plum, cherries and red fruit. Good body with nice acidity and surprising balance. The supple red fruit is concentrated and allows for a sweet finish. It is hard to find Bordeaux this good at this price point.” 88 points

Tasting Note: “Ruby Red with a touch of bricking on the edge. Still looking quite youthful. Medium intensity nose of cassis, wood and mature Bordeaux aromas. Classic. Pleasant. Medium bodied on the palette with nice acidity and soft tannins. A mature wine. Exactly what you would expect. 88 points” (Michael Cody - April 2011)

Description: From the satellite appellation of Lussac-St.-Emilion. This is a good example of reasonably priced mature wine. This Château is owned by Max Silvestrini the head of the Lussac syndicate. The wine is 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Description: Who knew that Bordeaux Superieur could be cellared for 10 years? This wine is made by Jean Michel Garcion (one of our favorite Bordeaux winemakers) and it consistently outperforms its Bordeaux Sup. classification. We are currently offering the 2001 and the 2005 vintages of this wine. Both of these wines are incredible values and sell out extremely fast. Which vintage you prefer is simply a matter of how mature you like your wine.

Description: This wine is made from predominantly Malbec. It comes from the Cotes de Castillon and is made in the traditional rustic Bordeaux style – which means that it needs at least a decade to age and become drinkable.

Tasting Note: “The 2001 is more aromatic than the 1998. It is red–purple in colour and showing just a touch of age. The nose gives off intense aromas of pleasant black fruit. The wine is medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and has good tannic structure and a medium length finish. It can easily age for another 2-5 years.” 88 points.

Tasting Note: “The 2005 Tayet Cuvee Prestige may be the best wine ever made at this Château. This wine is structured and concentrated and yet still classic and refined in its profile. Lots of fruit, acidity, and tannin. It should mature well for 1012 years which is astonishing for a lowly Bordeaux Sup. wine. Buy it to drink now or stuff it in your cellar and forget about it for 5-10 years.” 89 points

Tasting Note: “The 2000 is a medium ruby red colour with an aromatic nose of red fruit. It has a really good mouth feel with lots of tannic structure and good acidity. The medium length finish is full of the taste of dark fruit. This wine has more structure than many of the other selections on this list that are similarly priced.” 88 points (Michael Cody – April 2008)

(Michael Cody – January 2010)

Tasting Note: “This wine is brick red and shows its age well. Fully mature with bricking around the edges. Medium intensity nose of berry and chocolate. Surprisingly ripe and aromatic on the nose - especially for the 1993 vintage. On the palate this wine has surprising acidity and tannins. Tons of structure still. The fruit has mellowed into a nice mature flavour. Medium length finish. This is a good example of a mature Bordeaux. Recommend drinking now.” 88 points (Michael Cody – August 2009)

Description: Château La Rode is also from the Cotes de Castillon. While it is still mostly Malbec it has a lot more merlot in it that the Château Camp de la Hire - giving it a rounder and softer style.

Tasting Note: “The 1995 La Rode is a beautiful glowing ruby red colour with rust accents. The medium intensity nose carries plums, ref fruits and cherries. It is beautiful on the palate. There is a lot of fruit concentration here with a ton of structure. Less acidity than the Ch. Camp de la Hire. This is a great wine. Yum.” 90 points.

Tasting Note: “The 1996 La Rode has more of everything than the 1995. It is darker. Has more fruit, acidity and tannin. If you like your wines younger you will like this wine. It will age for a long time yet.” 88 points

SKU: 846162

Tasting Note: “The 1994 is much darker in colour than the 1993 and it is not showing as much age. Medium intensity nose of dark fruit. Very pleasant.Much more body to the 1994. The acidity and tannin are still very strong. Still lots of fruit left. This is a bigger wine in every way. Very nice all around wine. Good value and will cellar for another 5 years. This is a rustic style wine that was built to last.” 88 points (Michael Cody – August 2009)

Description: This wine is the bigger brother of Château Chapelle Maracan. Again the vines average over 35 years old. This wine is 65% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. It is aged in oak barrels for 16 months and 70% of the oak is new. Tasting Notes: “This wine is drinking perfectly right now. The Chapelle D’Àlienor has a lot of oak on it and even though it is only a Bordeaux Superieur it needs a few years to reach its best. Opaque Ruby red in colour it is obvious to see that this is a big wine. Bright and youthful. An intense nose of sweet fruit and lots of vanilla oak with a touch of Bordeaux funk and cedar. On the palate this wine has a silky body, with good tannic structure and nice balance. Yummy.” 88 points. (Michael Cody – August 2009)

“The Chapelle DÀlienor 2004 also obtains two stars. This bottle possesses enough advantages to wait for at least three years and give those who love power and good wood the reward for their patience.” 2 STARS (Guide Hachette – 2007)

Winemaker’s Notes: Fruity and fresh with grapefruit, pineapple and grassy notes. This is combined with nice steely and stony minerality. Good acid with hints of honey and white fruit from the Semillon. Good value.

The Château Thieuley Bordeaux Rouge is produced of 70% Merlot with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from deep clay and gravel soils the wine is aged entirely in used oak barriques and foudres. Total production is just over thirteen thousand cases.

2008 CH. THIEULEY CUVEE FRANCIS COURSELLE (BLANC) Drinking Window: 2008-2018

Tasting Notes: “The 2000 is opaque purple-red and still looking very bright and youthful. It has a pleasant nose of sweet red fruit. There is a lot of structure to this wine. It has medium body, good acidity and sweet tannins. This is a very nice wine. Will keep another 3-5 years.” 88 points.

Winemaker’s Notes: “Dark color. Nose of red fruits, spices, slightly oaked. Powerful, with a good structure with tannins, which need at least 3 years to be softer.”

Description: Château Boucheau Blason D.S. is a special 100% merlot cuvee from a Château that no longer exists because it was absorbed into a more famous Château. The wine was made by Jean Michel Garcion who also makes our popular Château Tayet and Château Haut Breton Largiaudiere wines.

This wine is made by the Jean Michel Garcion - the same winemaker who makes our popular Château Tayet. This is part of a small parcel of back vintage wines from a Château that no longer exists because it’s vineyards were absorbed into a larger much more famous Château (which we cannot name here - but it is a good one). The 2000 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and if you liked the 1999 Boucheau we have offered in the past you will like the 2000 better.

Tasting Note: “This wine comes from the far southern part of the graves. It is a traditional and classic Bordeaux. The distinguishing feature of this wine is the incredible nose on it. It is bursting with what I call Bordeaux Funk or what others refer to as “barnyard”. If you like barnyard aromaslike those found in the Grand Cru Classe wine Ch. Gruaud Larose - then you will love this affordable version of a classic Bordeaux. Will age for another 5 years or so.” 89 points

Drinking Window: 2005-2015 750ml x 12 | $37.13

SKU: 176699 The Réserve Francis Courselle is produced of 85% Merlot with equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit is sourced from selected parts of a 15 acre vineyard in deep clay and gravel soils and the finished wine is aged in 70% new French oak barrels for 14 months. Only 3000 cases are produced. Winemakers Notes: “Nice, dark and intense color. Powerful aromatic intensity with a mix of spices and ripened fruit: blackberry, anise and cedar. Full body, strong structure, nice complexity with beautiful tannins.

Tasting Note: “This wine is opaque ruby red with good viscosity. Showing a little bit of age. Beautiful and striking aromatic nose of barnyard, plum, wood, earth, and chocolate with hints of asian spice. The merlot and the oak really shows on this wine. The nose is complex and pleasant. Silky mouthfeel. Medium body. Nice balance of acidity. Soft wine. Comes in a wood case of 6. I love this.” 90 points (Michael Cody – August 2009)

“This wine has remarkable colour left. Jean Michel’s wines always have pure cassis from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Aging really well. Lots of life left in it. I prefer this to the 1999 (which was 100% Merlot) because of the quality of the fruit and the structured acidity. Great value and a rare find.”

Sauternes is a luscious sweet wine made from botrytis affected grapes. High quality Sauternes needs to age for a minimum of 5-10 years before it is ready to drink. As the wines age, they darken and their fruity pineapple and peach flavours develop into toasty flavours of crème brulée and toffee. Here is a small selection of well-priced Sauternes that are ready to drink.

Tasting Notes: “Excellent tropical fruit (primarily pineapples) intermixed with scents of lanolin are attractive in this medium to fullbodied, fresh, concentrated wine. Good underlying acidity nicely buttresses the wine’s weighty feel in the mouth. An excellent lower level Sauternes, it should drink well during its first two decades of life. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020.” 87 points

Tasting Note: “This has a mid-golden hue. It is very fresh on the nose, with attractive lightly honeycoated fruits. On the palate it is typical Bastor, with a lighter style than some others, fresh and delicate rather than opulent, but nicely lifted by an incisive blood orange acidity. This is very true to style for Bastor, which often seems to show this firm body of acids I think. Good. From the 2007 CIVB Tasting” 15.5+/20

Description: Ch. Broustet is a 2eme Cru Sauternes. It is rich and viscous and full of tropical fruit and caramel. It is similar in style to Ch. Suduiraut.

Description: Mike found this wine last year in Bordeaux and was shocked. This is a 2000 vintage sweet wine that tastes like a Sauternes and only costs $35 for a 750ml bottle. To put this in perspective Sauternes normally costs about $40$50 for a half-bottle in the current vintage. Loupiac is Sauternes poor cousin. It lies across the river from Sauternes and so it sees less fog and as a result slightly less botrytis. The wines are a little lighter in body and are slightly softer but they follow the same painstaking standards for the hand harvesting and making of great botrytised sweet wines from Bordeaux. Loupiac can be a great value if you find the right one. This is the right one. Tasting Note: “This wine is surprisingly good and an incredible value. Nice deep colour. Very thick and viscous. On the palette it has wonderful pineapple and tropical fruit flavours. There is enough acidity to balance the sweetness. It has a long finish with hints of botrytis. Great value. Bring it in for the holidays.” 89 points.

(The Wine Doctor - October 2007)

Tasting Note: “Beautiful deep golden colour with lots of viscosity. Explosive and intense nose of pineapple mixed with sweet caramel and a touch of toasty, nutty creme brulee. Enchanting - I could smell this all day. Reminds me of a great vintage Suduiraut. On the palate, medium plus body with lots of sweet, sweet pineapple and more mature flavours that are more reminiscent of creme brulee than caramel. The long finish that coats your mouth with flavours of pineapple and caramel. A touch simple and lacking the racy acidity of the 1eme Cru Sauternes but this is simply a beautiful and enjoyable wine.” 90 points (Michael Cody - March 2011)

Description: Ch. Broustet is a 2eme Cru Sauternes. It is rich and viscous and full of tropical fruit and caramel. It is similar in style to Ch. Suduiraut.

Tasting Note: “Wonderful aromas of lime, mineral and flint, with sugar-coated dry lemons. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with plenty of fruit and a flinty, spicy finish. Takes on petrol notes.” 87 points

Tasting Note: Made in a light, fruity style emphasizing finesse and elegance, the 2001 Filhot exhibits abundant amounts of sweet pineapple and sealing waxlike characteristics, along with pure, clean flavors. Slightly sweet, it does not possess the body or power of the vintage’s bigger examples, but it is a refreshing, vibrant Sauternes to enjoy over the next 12-15 years.” 91 points

Tasting Note: “One of the stars of the vintage for Sauternes, the 1996 Guiraud offers a sumptuous nose of tangerine fruit intermixed with caramel and buttered corn. The wine displays a deep golden color, and striking flavors of Chinese black tea, marmalade, honey, and citrus. The powerful yet elegant flavors remain in the mouth for a significant period of time. While this wine is traditionally a blend of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon, Xavier Plantey, the estate’s manager, told me that there is nearly 45% Sauvignon Blanc in the final blend of the 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025.”

Tasting Note: “Beautiful golden colour. Lighter than the 1996. Still developing and needs more time to mature. Medium intensity nose with tropical fruit and a hint of caramel. Not showing any of the mature creme brulee aromas yet - but they will develop with another 5-10 years of aging. A hint of botrytis ammonia on the nose. Refreshing and delightful on the palate with more acidity than the 1996. A touch below the 1996 in terms of quality and balance. Needs more time but has the potential to be a good wine.” 89-90 points

An excellent vintage for Guiraud.” 91 points

Tasting Note: “This wine displays gorgeous aromas of coconut, honeyed oranges, tangerines, pineapples, mangoes, and other tropical fruits. It is medium to full-bodied and super-rich, but not a blockbuster. It possesses low acidity (in flavor, but not in terms of analyses), and a long, 40-second finish.
