Carmichael Auditorium opened in January, 2010 after a multi-million dollar renovation.

Carmichael Arena

The North Carolina faithful long have referred to Carmichael Auditorium

as Blue Heaven and the name certainly fits. Located among the tall pine trees at the heart of the North Carolina campus, Carmichael has been home to the

gymnastics program since it reached NCAA status in 1982. Carolina recently completed a multi-million dollar facelift of Carmichael Auditorium, which has made it one of the top Olympic sports gymnasiums in the country.

The auditorium is named for the late William D. Carmichael Jr., a highly popular figure on campus who served as the university’s comp-

troller, then as its vice-president. Prior to the 1976-77 season, 1,200 seats were added to bring historic Carmichael to its present capacity of 8,010.

The gymnastics office is housed in Carmichael, steps from the competition floor. The facility also serves as home to the women’s bas-

ketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as housing offices for many other coaches in UNC’s highly-successful Olympic Sports

programs. The Carolina men’s basketball program called Carmichael home from 1965 until its move to the Dean E. Smith Center midway through the 1985-86 season. Under coach Dean Smith, the Tar Heels compiled a home record of 169-20 at Carmichael.

2011 Preview The University of North Carolina gymnastics team enters the 2011 season with a balanced team determine to achieve its goals of qualifying for the NCAA Championships and defending its East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) team title. The 2011 squad features nine returning letterwinners, a redshirt freshman and three eager newcomers. “We have some spots to fill in the lineup but I think we have some athletes who are ready to step into those spots,” says head coach Derek Galvin, who is entering his 30th season at UNC. “The junior class is confident and Teri Diamond is back as a senior. We’ve got a group that’s really working well together and that’s the most critical factor with the team.” The Tar Heels graduated three outstanding gymnasts – Kristina Jacob, Christine Nguyen and Kara Wright – but have a deep junior class and return senior Teri Diamond from injury. The Tar Heels host four home meets this year, the most since renovating Carmichael Arena two years ago. They also look to win their ninth-straight George Washington Invitational to open the season. This season, the team wants to improve upon its recent success by advancing to the NCAA Championships.

exercise line-ups. The Carolina gymnastics team added three freshmen this year, Acacia Cosentino, Emily Cornwell and Kristin Aloi. Galvin sees a lot of potential for them to step into college gymnastics and contribute right away. “We have been impressed,” he says. “We graduated some very strong competitors, but I think the freshman will do a good job; they’ll be able to step into the lineup. We’ve seen improvements in some of the returning team members so we are eager to start competing. We have a lot of work to do but we have a very positive outlook on this season.” VAULT: The Tar Heel vault line-up looks to add depth and difficulty this year. Johnson returns as the EAGL vault champion. Brown, Ikoma and Evans also return with experience as collegiate vaulters. Jasper, Durkac, Magjuka and freshmen Aloi, Cornwell and Cosentino are all also capable of contributing to the Tar Heel’s vault line-up this season.

“Several gymnasts have been training Yurchenko with a full twist in the post-flight of the vault,” says Galvin. “A few are training the Yurchenko with a half twist in the postJunior Zoya Johnson is one of 10 returning letterwinners “It’s the journey, and certainly we’ve got flight and Elizabeth Durkac is performing in 2011. an ultimate goal for the end of the season. Jasper was slowed down last year with an injury but Cosentino, Cornwell and Aloi have also looked very promising as potenis healthy and ready to compete this season. Lindley has shown much tial competitors on uneven bars. improvement on bars and balance beam while Brown is training to be a top contender in both vault and floor exercise. “We had a strong lineup on bars last year, but we believe we have an even deeper group this year,” Galvin says. “Several returning team “The upperclassman and team leaders came up with the goals they members have upgraded the quality of their routines on bars and all three have for the team this season. Not just competitive goals but a lot of of our new team members have shown during the preseason that they are things that are a part of being on the gymnastics team here at Carolina— ready to vie for spots in the line-up too.” academically as well as what they do in the community. Creating the right kind of team attitude in training and preseason has been done,” BALANCE BEAM: Galvin says. The balance beam could once again be the Tar Heels strongest event. Half of last season’s EAGL championship balance beam line-up Sophomores Elizabeth Durkac, Michelle Ikoma, Meredith Magjuka graduated, but it has only served as motivation for other gymnasts to and Maura Masatsugu look to improve upon their performances and add fill the void. Jasper, Evans and Masatsugu were all part of the line-up overall depth to every event. Durkac has worked hard in the offseason at the EAGL championships last year and should be top performers and is looking to have her strongest year as she competes on uneven again. Diamond, Lindley and Durkac will add depth. Cornwell also has bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Masatsugu will return as an a strong chance to contribute on beam. Galvin believes that this year’s integral part of the reigning EAGL championship beam line-up, while beam line-up boasts strong routines and the confidence to perform them Ikoma has looked particularly strong on vault in preseason workouts. consistently. Magjuka is ready to compete after red-shirting last season following a back injury. She will provide depth on the Tar Heel’s vault and floor “We are loaded with depth on beam this year,” he says. “I believe it

2011 Preview can again be a very strong event for us.”

The Tar Heels begin the season with the George Washington Invitational in Washington, D.C. George Washington will play host to six teams including Carolina, Rutgers, Temple, William & Mary, Penn and Cornell. The Tar Heels have won the invitational eight years in a row and hope to continue their success in 2011.

FLOOR EXERCISE: The Tar Heel floor exercise routines this year will exhibit a variety of styles in both music and choreography. Brown, Evans and Ikoma all have new music and choreography to display since performing at last year’s EAGL championships and NCAA regional competition. The return of Jasper to the floor exercise squad, along with the addition of Durkac, Masatsugu, Magjuka should prove to be a very strong squad. Mastering new choreography and further developing endurance in the floor exercise routines has been the focus during the preseason, according to Galvin. Galvin wants this team to perform routines that will draw the spectators into the heart of the routine—constantly pursuing the “wow” factor. The team wants to create dynamic routines that blend artistry and athletic power.

Following two away meets at Rutgers and William & Mary, the Tar Heels will head to Chapel Hill for three consecutive home meets. Carolina will face conference foe Maryland on February 5th, followed by head-to-head meets with Penn State and Pittsburgh on the following weekends. “Two years ago we had Florida in Carmichael Auditorium and this year we’ve got Penn State. They have traditionally been a strong gymnastics program and are going to be a formidable opponent. We are excited about having them in Chapel Hill.”

“As we continue to improve our overall execution in both the dance elements and the tumbling elements the excitement of floor exercise will become even more captivating,” says Galvin.

On February 26th, the Tar Heels will head to rival school West Virginia for another tough meet before heading back to Chapel Hill for the last home meet of the year versus William and Mary on March 5.

“We are going to do our best to repeat as EAGL Champions,” says Galvin. “We have a talented group and they are one of the hardest working groups we’ve have had over the years.”

A SPECTATOR’S GUIDE TO WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS There are four events in women’s gymnastics — Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise (from usagymnastics.org) VAULT A successful vault begins with a strong, accelerated run. The best vaulters explode off the board with tremendous quickness during the preflight phase of the vault. When the gymnast pushes off the vault table, the judges are looking for proper body position and an instantaneous repulsion. Watch for the height and distance traveled, as well as the number of flips and twists. Gymnasts strive to “stick” their landings by taking no extra steps.

UNEVEN BARS The most spectacular of the women’s events, the uneven bars demand strength, as well as concentration, courage, coordination and split-second timing. Watch for the big swings that begin in handstands on the high bar, incorporating multiple hand changes, pirouettes and release elements. The entire routine should flow from one skill to the next without pauses, extra swings or additional supports. Watch for the high flying dismount where the gymnast will attempt to stick her landing.

BALANCE BEAM The beam is only four inches wide and considered the most difficult event by many gymnasts. The gymnast must use acrobatic, tumbling and dance movements in her routine. Watch for acrobatic series consisting of two or more elements performed in a row. The overall execution should give the impression that the gymnast is performing on the floor, not on a beam. Watch for variations in rhythm, changes in level, and the harmonious blend of dance and acrobatic elements.

FLOOR EXERCISE Usually a favorite event for the fans, the floor routine must be choreographed to music and cover the entire floor area. The gymnast must use a variety of dance and tumbling elements which reflects her personality. Most gymnasts at the international level will do four tumbling passes, changing both the direction and level of movement throughout the routine. Watch for powerful, yet graceful, routines that are fun and exciting.

Head Coach Derek Galvin Derek Galvin Head Coach • 30th Year n 2010 EAGL Coach of the Year n 2005 EAGL Coach of the Year n 2004 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year n 2004 EAGL Coach of the Year n 2003 NCAA Southeast Region Co-Coach of the Year n 2002 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year n 2002 EAGL Coach of the Year n 2000 EAGL Coach of the Year Only the third gymnastics coach in North Carolina history, Derek Galvin enters his 30th year in Chapel Hill fresh off winning his fifth East Atlantic Gymnastics League Coach of the Year honor in 2010. Galvin, who has been at the helm of the program since it became an NCAA sport in 1982, has an overall record of 346-195-1. His programs combine the best of athletic and academic achievement every season. Over the last decade, Galvin’s Carolina program has experienced an explosion of success. The Tar Heels have won four East Atlantic Gymnastics League titles in the last nine years, including last year’s championship, and Galvin, or his assistant Penny Jernigan, have earned 10 coach, or assistant coach of the year honors. Last season, Carolina won the EAGL title, outscoring long-time conference rivals NC State and West Virginia. Carolina has advanced to nine consecutive NCAA regional appearances since 2002 under Galvin, the longest streak in school history. And while the program has narrowly missed its goal of competing in the national championships, it has come within one place of advancing from regionals to nationals on several occasions. Most notably, Carolina came within a whisker of making the NCAA finals in 2004, placing third at the Southeast Regional, just .025 points behind the second place team. The previous year, the Tar Heels missed the necessary secondplace spot by .05 points. Last year, Carolina overcame numerous obstacles, including injuries at several key positions to win the conference championship and advance to regionals. The Tar Heels finished 12-6, and won three of its final four meets of the year, posting a score of 196 or better against Rutgers and in the EAGL championships. Senior Christine Nguyen capped off a spectacular career with her third straight EAGL Gymnast of the Year honor, while teammate Kara Wright was named the EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Wright also earned Academic All-District honors and was one of 11 Tar Heels named to the EAGL All-Academic Team, which also included Nguyen, Taylor Brown, Teri Diamond, Elizabeth Durkas, Michelle Ikoma, Tina Jacob, Krista Jasper, Elizabeth Lindley, Meredith Magjuka and Maura Masatsugu. It was the fourth consecutive selection for Diamond, Jacob and Wright. In the last 25 years, gymnasts coached by Galvin have been chosen for the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches’ Scholastic All-America Gymnastics Team 120 times. Two of Galvin’s former gymnasts – Natalie Halbach and Stacey Kaplan – have been honored as a GTE Academic All-Americas. Halbach, a 2003 graduate, was the first female student-athlete in the Atlantic Coast Conference to receive the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, the most prestigious academic award given by the NCAA. Eight Tar Heels – Brown, Ikoma, Jacob, Jasper, Lindley, Magjuka, Masatsugu and Wright – were named to the 2010 NACGC/W national academic team.

Tar Heel gymnasts have had their share of success in the arena as well under Galvin. Courtney Bumpers, a 2006 graduate, achieved the ultimate individual honor in 2005 - winning floor exercise at the NCAA championships with a perfect score of 10.0. It was the second straight floor exercise national crown for Bumpers, who also earned All-America honors in 2003 with a fourth place finish on balance beam. Christine Robella earned All-America honors in 2006 on floor exercise. It was her first All-America honor and the fourth in Carolina history. In addition, several gymnasts have won individual league honors in Galvin’s tenure, most recently Nguyen’s third straight gymnast of the year award. Galvin has a long history of success at Carolina. In his first year as head coach in 1982, he guided the Tar Heels to a fourth place finish at the Southeast Regional. His 1985 and 1986 teams both finished third at the meet after placing first in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In addition to UNC’s accomplishments as a team, Carolina has been represented every year at NCAA regionals by at least one individual gymnast. In 2003, Bumpers and junior Anna Wilson were the first Carolina gymnasts since 1986 to qualify for the NCAA national championships as individuals. Bumpers recorded the then-highest finish ever of any ACC or EAGL gymnast with her fourth place finish on the balance beam in the final round before achieving her championship status in the next two years on floor exercise. In 2004, the Tar Heels had arguably the best year in school history. Galvin was named the NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the third straight season after directing the team to a 22-1 record and a second place finish in the EAGL Championships. The Tar Heels earned a regional appearance and the .955 winning percentage was the highest in school history. It was a record-breaking year in team and individual results with the Tar Heels setting school records on every event except balance beam and scoring above a 197.0 in four meets. Bumpers, who earned the program’s third-ever 10.0 in 2003, turned in seven perfect scores on floor exercise and surpassed her previous school record on the vault and in the all-around competition. She has the school’s highest all-around total with a 39.725 and the highest vault score with a 9.975. Olivia Trusty set a record on uneven bars with a score of 9.95. Galvin was named the EAGL Coach of the Year for the fourth time in 2005, leading his team to a regular season record of 14-4-1 and the conference championship. Carolina finished the year ranked 23rd in the country and tied for third place at regionals. A year later, the Tar Heels repeated as EAGL champions. Galvin has been involved in gymnastics in various capacities throughout his life. He was a member of the Carolina men’s team before the discontinuation of the program in 1974. Staying involved in the sport, he spent four years coaching at Gymdancetics, a train training center established by Fred Sanders, former coach of the Carolina men’s team. Under Galvin’s guidance, team members dominated state competition and advanced to the United States Gymnastics Federation championships. In 1978, he became director and head coach of the Triad Gymnastics Academy. The following year he accepted an administrative posi position with the research and consulting firm of Syllogistics, Inc., but remained active in area gymnastics. His first season as head coach of the Tar Heels was in 1982. Galvin has made contributions to many other areas of the gymnas gymnastics community. In 1982, he was named to the NCAA Southeast Region Advisory Committee and served as committee chairman for several years, including the 2005 season. He was the gymnastics site coordinator for the 1987 United States Olympic Festival in Chapel Hill. He is an active member of the NACGC and has served as a clinician of several USAG and NCAA Y.E.S. clinics. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Galvin moved to Arlington, Va., with his family when he was 10 years old. He competed on two state cham championship gymnastics teams under coach Jesse Meeks at Yorktown High School and graduated from Carolina with a psychology degree in 1976. Galvin and his wife, Debra, have two children. Both gradu graduated from college in May 2003 - their son, Derek Sean, from UNC and their daughter, Ryan, from the University of Virginia. Derek Sean and his wife Amanda, made Galvin a proud grandfather last December with birth of his first grandchild, Lily Mae.

Opponent George Washington Invitational at William & Mary vs. Maryland at Sweetheart Invitational at Stanford at Florida vs. West Virginia at Maryland vs. Rutgers EAGL Championships (Durham, N.H.) NCAA Regionals (Columbia, Mo.)

Jan. 17 - George Washington Invitational Christine Nguyen, Kara Wright and Krista Jasper were the top three all-around finishers as the University of North Carolina gymnastics team captured its eighth straight GW/Lindsey Ferris Invitational title. Seniors Nguyen and Wright won two events apiece and three freshman made an instant impact in their first collegiate meet. The Tar Heels scored a team-total 192.450 to finish 3.3 points ahead of second-place Temple. Jan. 24 - at William & Mary North Carolina defeated William & Mary in the team’s first dual meet of the season. The Tar Heels won every event and outscored the Tribe 193.375 to 184.450. Nguyen won the all-around title for the second straight week after capturing three individual event titles. Zoya Johnson returned to the lineup after recovering from surgery to win on vault. Feb. 14 - vs. Maryland North Carolina suffered its first defeat of the season in its first home meet since the 2008 season. Despite a Carolina gymnast placing first on every event, Maryland narrowly edged the Tar Heels 194.150-193.800. Nine of Carolina’s 14 gymnasts competed in Carmichael Arena for the first time on Sunday and the crowd of more than 2,000, believed to be the largest in UNC gymnastics history, welcomed the Tar Heels back to Chapel Hill. Feb. 20 - at Sweetheart Invitational North Carolina fell to EAGL rival No. 25 NC State and No. 10 Nebraska at the Sweetheart Invitational in Raleigh. The Tar Heels scored a 193.875 team total, but fell short of the Huskers, which scored 195.000. NC State won the Sweetheart Invitational with a score of 195.575. Carolina ousted Nebraska and NC State on balance beam, an event the team had struggled with in the past weeks. Feb. 28 - at Stanford Senior Kara Wright led North Carolina to a second place finish in a quad-meet at No. 6 Stanford that also featured California and Eastern Michigan. The Tar Heels scored a team total 193.075 while host Stanford won the meet, scoring a 196.525. The Tar Heels finished second to Stanford on every event. March 5 - at Florida For the second week in a row, North Carolina finished second to a Top 10 opponent. The Tar Heels recorded their highest team total this season and Kara Wright tied her personal best in all-around, but the team could not keep pace with No. 4 Florida. Carolina scored a 194.225 total, but the Gators recorded a 197.550. Ball State finished in third with a 191.350.

March 13 - vs. West Virginia Despite a North Carolina gymnast placing first on every apparatus, West Virginia narrowly edged the Tar Heels 193.775-193.000 at Carmichael Arena in a battle of conference rivals. Carolina posted a season-high score on vault and senior Christine Nguyen won the three individual events, but the Tar Heels’ poor performance on balance beam was costly. March 16 - at Maryland After narrowly falling to EAGL rival Maryland on Valentine’s Day in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels edged the Terps and George Washington to win a tri-meet in College Park, Md. Senior Christine Nguyen won the all-around title and two event titles to lead Carolina in the win. The Tar Heels scored a team total 194.000 while Maryland recorded a 193.375 and George Washington posted a 192.825. March 20 - vs. Rutgers There could not have been a better ending than Saturday’s 196.225-187.200 victory over Rutgers in the final home meet for the 2010 North Carolina senior gymnasts. The Tar Heels scored their highest event totals of the season on three events and their highest overall score since April 2004 after not counting a fall on any apparatus. Senior Christine Nguyen recorded the fourth highest all-around score in Carolina gymnastics history, as both she and senior Kara Wright scored personal bests on all-around. March 27 - at EAGL Championships North Carolina began 2010 with the goal of winning the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championship and it achieved that goal by scoring a 196.025 to outlast NC State and West Virginia. A different gymnast had the highest Carolina score on each event, as the program’s fourth EAGL championship was a team effort. April 10 - NCAA Regionals Despite a solid performance the 2010 season came to an end for the No. 36 North Carolina gymnastics team at NCAA Regionals. In their ninth-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance the Tar Heels placed sixth in the six-team field with a 194.750. Host No. 15 Missouri took first to advance to the NCAA Championships. No. 5 Georgia and No. 8 Oregon State both scored a 196.275, but Oregon State advanced to the championship on a tiebreaker.

Student-Athlete Services Advancing toward graduation, Building Character and Developing leadership Student-Athlete Services at the University of North Carolina encompasses three areas that play an integral part in the collegiate experience of every UNC studentathlete. Those three areas are Academic Development, Student-Athlete Development and Leadership Development. • ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT The Academic Support Program is the main service utilized in advancing UNC student-athletes to graduation. The program assists student-athletes in exploring their interests and abilities, enjoying a broad educational experience, and reaching or exceeding their academic goals. “Our young people are students first and athletes second and that will always be the case at the University,” says UNC Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. “That is a credit to our coaches, administrators and support staff, but most of all, our student-athletes. Their accomplishments in the classroom are very impressive.”

Carolina CREED As a University of North Carolina student-athlete, I pledge to make every effort to abide by the Carolina CREED as a show of my commitment to the University, the Department of Athletics, my team and myself. C - I will know and embrace the tradition and culture of this great University and its athletics department R - I will respect myself and others E - I will pursue excellence in my academic work by striving to reach my academic potential while preparing for a career of significance E - I will excel athletically by committing myself to performance excellence, team success and continual improvement D - I will develop the capacity to effectively lead myself and others

During the 2007-08 academic year, 286 Carolina student-athletes made the ACC Academic Honor Roll, which requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for the year. In the fall of 2007, 169 student-athletes made the Dean’s List, and 134 did so in the spring of 2008. The Academic Support Program is housed primarily in the Pope Academic Support Center, which is equipped with study facilities, tutorial rooms, a computer lab, a 128-seat auditorium, counselors’ offices, and state-of-the-art video and computer equipment. At the center, students meet with staff to discuss course selection, major and career exploration, academic progress and academic eligibility. The Academic Support Program helps freshmen transition from high school to college through a variety of academic programs such as academic counseling, individual tutoring, group review sessions and supplemental instruction. • STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT Building character in UNC student-athletes is the main charge of Student-Athlete Development. Through Carolina Outreach, Tar Heels are involved in a variety of projects and organizations on campus and in the community. The UNC Department of Athletics has partnered with Gatorade and the UNC School of Public Health for a national pilot program called Get Kids in Action, in which Tar Heel student- athletes visit local elementary schools to encourage children to exercise. The Carolina Dreams program allows young patients at UNC Children’s Hospitals to attend Tar Heel sporting events with UNC student-athletes. Other recent activities have included building a house with Habitat for Humanity, cooking meals at Ronald McDonald House and cleaning up the roadways through the Adopt-a- Highway program.

The Carolina gymnastics team is involved in several community service projects throughout the year, including this recent Habitat For Humanity project in Orange County.

Student-Athlete Development also seeks to develop student-athletes on a personal level through a variety of speakers who address issues like nutrition, gambling, relationship communication and substance use. Career Development helps UNC student-athletes look beyond college with resources such as career counseling and workshops on resume writing and interviewing skills. • LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT The primary outlet for Leadership Development is the Carolina Leadership Academy, started at UNC in 2004. As the nation’s premier leadership development program in collegiate athletics, the Carolina Leadership Academy develops, challenges and supports student-athletes, coaches and staff in their continual quest to become world class leaders in athletics, academics and life. The Academy consists of three programs:

CREED Program Leadership training begins in the freshman year. All leadership begins with personal leadership, therefore freshmen are taught skills to effectively lead themselves. Training consists of monthly meetings featuring keynote speakers and small group discussion. Upperclass student-athletes serve as peer mentors and discussion leaders. Special focus is on responsibility, accountability, making good choices, ethics and character building. Rising Stars Program Designed for a select group of “high potential” sophomores and juniors, the program provides future leaders with insights, strategies and skills necessary to become effective leaders. The program includes monthly meetings, interactive exercises and action learning experiences. Veteran Leaders Program This program is designed for team captains and veteran studentathletes. It provides advanced leadership training and support, teaches the critical skills and insights necessary to be effective vocal leaders and provides a strong peer network. Student-athletes meet regularly to learn and reinforce leadership principles and share successes, frustrations and lessons.

we are I’m a Tar Heel. It’s a simple statement—a phrase that can mean something different for each person who says it. Underlying it is a thread common to each member of the Carolina Family. That underlying thread is the commitment each Tar Heel has to do things the Carolina Way—with great integrity, a dedication to fellow Tar Heels, an unwavering loyalty to Carolina, and a commitment to excellence. The Carolina Way also entails a commitment to excellence—a commitment that is unrivaled elsewhere. It is evident in Carolina’s 37 team national championships, 54 individual national championships, and numerous conference titles. It is evident in the classroom as Carolina boasts an outstanding 85 percent graduation rate among student-athletes. It is evident in the community as Tar Heel student-athletes and staff performed more than 20,000 hours of community service last year.
