FULLY AUTOMATIC TIMING (FAT) Fully automatic timing (FAT) is the most desirable timing method in track events because it eliminates any margin for human error. Fully automatic timing measures races in 1/100s of a second.Virtually all records must be FAT to be certified. An automatic timing device must meet the following criteria: 1. A fully automatic timing device is one which has the capability to time eight or more places, is powered electrically and displays elapsed time on a console, photo or print-out paper. 2. An automatic timer is started automatically by the energy of an exploding shell in the starter’s gun. 3.The time is recorded automatically as the result of an electronic or optical device that will determine the instant the first part of each runner’s torso crosses the finish line. Manual timing (MT) is done with a hand-held stopwatch. Manual times are recorded in 1/10s of a second. Hand-held watches displaying times in 1/100s must be rounded up to the slower tenth. Converting times from manual to automatic is accomplished by adding .24 second to the manual time.Thus a 10.2 100-meter manual time is roughly equal to a 10.44 automatic time. EXPLANATION OF WIND READINGS, RECORDS Official acceptance of world, American, collegiate or NCAA records in the long jump, triple jump, or in any race that is not run around the complete oval of a track requires that a reliable wind instrument shall record that any assisting wind does not exceed an average velocity of 2.0 meters per second (6.56 feet per second, 393.7 feet per minute 4.474 miles per hour). An aiding win is one that blows at the runner’s back, either directly or in a slanting direction. A reliable wind instrument is one that employs the use of a directional tube and measures meters per second or miles per hour. It is positioned parallel to and at the edge of the track at a point halfway between the start and finish line.
