FAMILY OF RACES

2 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run® | Credit Union SacTown Run | Freedom Runs

THERESA MANN A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR The culmination of the 2016 events marks the 15th year that credit unions have been the title sponsor of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, and the 5th year that they have been the title sponsor of the Credit Union SacTown Run. We are very proud to also be affiliated with the Freedom Run at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, sponsored by the Defense Credit Union Council, and the Freedom Run at Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany, sponsored by Andrews FCU. These races help boost morale for our service members abroad – they appreciate the connection to their homeland. Fifteen years in front of consumers; 15 years in front of Congress; and most importantly, 15 years for children. Together, we have donated more than $7.5 million for CMN Hospitals nationwide AND WE ARE NOT DONE YET!!!

This year alone, working together we donated more than $505,000 to CMN Hospitals nationwide. Over 200 Members of Congress from 45 states signed on to be Honorary Race Chairs of the CU Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and more than 660 congressional staffers ran in the event. And there is more. Once again this year I joined several other local area credit unions on a tour of our local hospital. During this tour, we visited the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation Research where robotics are created and tested that make surgery less invasive and recovery easier and a 3-D printer makes copies of body parts so the surgeon knows what he or she will see to make best use of time once the surgery begins. We also visited the Emergency Communication and Information Center which is host to helicopters, pilots and ambulances 24/7. Honestly, I never knew how much coordination went into making sure patients are expeditiously transported with exactly the right care on board. We spent some time talking about how your donations help children at the hospital. You see, there are so many little things that make both parents and children able to cope with the tragedy of illness and remember the good things. There is an entire transitional program where staff teach parents to clean tubes, cook for and support their children as they are released from the hospital. This proactive advice helps kids to go home earlier. All of this hit home when I recently represented you at a reception for large donors at our local Children’s National in Washington, DC. Among the other corporate sponsors at the event, the guest speaker was also the father of a former patient. As he recounted the story of his son who spent months in the hospital off and on for the first five years of his life, he said “Things may have been going good, but things were not alright.” The child had to undergo open heart surgery. Yes, he was telling the story of his son’s illness but more than that he was highlighting the good work and tremendous support that is provided by all of those who work and volunteer in the hospital — from the time a child arrives, to the day the child is released and every day after that. Thankfully his son is a healthy 7-year old now and this father has been speaking, raising money and expressing gratitude ever since. That’s the way I hear it described time after time by parents. They say how wonderful the doctors and nurses are and how each and every staff member, from the arts and craft volunteers to the parking lot attendants, make the entire stay special. In closing, I want to thank all of our credit union sponsors, on both the West and East Coasts and in between. A special thank you goes out to each and every individual in those credit unions that ask members for donations at the teller window, who donate their time helping runners during one of the races or who bring special treats such as toys and books to the hospitals for the kids. And, none of this would be possible without the generous support of our business partners. What an exciting year for these events that help kids and uniquely showcase our credit union difference!

What People

Are Saying The Credit Union Miracle Day family of races provides a highly visible demonstration of credit unions’ commitment to their communities. CO-OP Financial Services is proud to include these important events in its support for CU4Kids and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Sarah Canepa Bang Executive Vice President, Industry Relations, CO-OP Financial Services

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals owes a huge debt of gratitude to all our wonderful credit union partners who continue to make the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and the Credit Union SacTown Run two of our premier events every year. Not only do we raise critical funds for the kids being treated at our hospitals but it’s a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate to both the public and our elected officials the credit union difference.

Sponsoring the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run gives PSCU the ideal platform to put the valuable role credit unions play in their communities front and center for Members of Congress. It is critical for the industry’s future success that D.C.-area influencers clearly understand the importance and impact of credit unions nationwide. We are honored to serve as a lead partner in this very special and powerful event that helps so many children around the country receive the treatment they need.

Joe Dearborn Sr. Director, Credit Unions for Kids

We’re pleased to be celebrating our fifth anniversary of joining with the Sacramento Running Association in hosting the Credit Union SacTown Run. And we’re thrilled to say that thanks to credit unions and businesses in California and Nevada, we have raised more than $1.1 million over the past five years to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals throughout both states.

We are truly grateful for our continued partnership with Credit Union Miracle Day. It is amazing to see credit unions from across the country come together for one common goal, making a difference in the lives of the patients treated at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. On behalf of everyone at Children’s National Health System, thank you Credit Union Miracle Day for your support of our mission and for helping us make miracles for local kids.

Arielle Gart Assistant Director, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Children’s National Health System

Throughout the year, it’s inspiring to be surrounded by the many credit union volunteers that have a passion to give back, and I am fortunate to be a part of a company with strong corporate values that encourage and support our employees to volunteer, join the race, and raise money for our team of runners to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. I am humbled by the challenges and triumphs that the children and their families face each day, most with a smile on their face, love for their doctors and nurses, and a passion to share their story. For me, I can’t imagine not being in Washington, DC, among the Cherry Blossoms and thousands of committed runners and volunteers on race day.

CUs for Kids and Credit Union Miracle Day are such integral parts of the tapestry woven at U.C. Davis Children’s Hospital. The richness of the programs has grown over the years and showed in all of our Miracle patients, including Cooper. Diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2010, today, ‘Super’ Cooper visits his friends spreading encouragement by giving them his signature ‘Red Cape’ for those children undergoing treatments at the hospital. Credit unions are truly miracle makers for us!

Local IMPACT Cooper’s Story Diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2010, Cooper learned a lot about coping with a devastating illness for nearly four years at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. On his last day of chemotherapy, Cooper wore a superhero cape. He passed it on afterward to another child with cancer, Joaquin. Unfortunately, 4-year-old Joaquin later lost his battle to leukemia. Cooper hasn’t forgotten Joaquin and so he persists in his effort, eager to raise funds to buy more capes and distribute them personally. On his 7th birthday in November 2015, sporting a Batman cape, the former leukemia patient returned with reminders for the children undergoing treatments at the hospital. He says he hopes that each child who receives a cape knows that it comes from someone who faced illness and beat it.

Chase’s Story At 3 years old, Chase accidentally used a lye-based drain cleaner on his toothbrush. The chemical instantly burned his esophagus. Unable to breathe or swallow, his dad rushed him to the local emergency room, which sent him via medevac to Children’s National. The chemical destroyed his esophagus and epiglottis, and he spent three weeks in the PICU recovering from his near-fatal accident. Chase has endured 32 surgical procedures and a tracheotomy to open his airway. Chase’s mom lovingly describes him as “a real people person,” and he loves Hawaiian dancing!

DAN BERGER

JIM NUSSLE I could not be more proud of the effort put into this year’s Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, in addition to the full family of races that raised funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through Credit Union Miracle Day. As one unified credit union movement, Credit Unions for Kids is a shining example of the credit union difference. We are honored to raise funds we know will directly enhance treatment and care for the patients at CMN Hospitals, and we can’t wait to participate again next year!

Each year, I am more and more impressed with the outstanding dedication shown by our member credit unions, and their member-owners, on many levels especially the fundraising activities that help to maintain the good work of children’s hospitals. The success of this event speaks volumes about the dedication of the organizers, fundraisers, volunteers, race participants and the credit union community. They merit our heartfelt appreciation and recognition for another wonderfully successful event.

For the 15th consecutive year, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run featured the Capitol Hill Competition, a highly spirited, very competitive race within the race. This race pits congressional offices against each other for the chance to win the coveted Capitol Hill Cup. This year, 662 runners competed on 66 teams. The Capitol Hill Competition is sponsored by Congressional Federal Credit Union and United States Senate Federal Credit Union, with support from CUNA and NAFCU. “The Capitol Hill Competition among Hill offices is always spirited, as you might expect. The funds raised all go for a good cause—helping children who might not otherwise get the medical care they need,” said Charlie Mallon, President and CEO, Congressional FCU. “When staggering statistics indicate 16,000 children are treated daily in Children’s Miracle Network Hospital emergency rooms OR 1 in 10 kids in North America is treated annually by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, it is reassuring to know that events like the Capitol Hill Competition help us to set aside partisanship and focus on the real need – helping children and those who provide their care,” said Susan Enis, President and CEO, U.S. Senate FCU. Over 200 members of Congress volunteered to serve as Honorary Chairs for this year’s race. By serving as Honorary Chairs, these elected officials helped to generate support in the name of children across the country. The official race results show that team Red, White and Blumenauer of Congressman Earl Blumenauer’s office won the Capitol Hill Competition for the second year in a row, with a combined race time of 3:18:41. This office also had the fastest male runner, Paul Balmer, who posted a time of 0:54:22. On the Senate side, team Carper Diem from Senator Tom Carper’s office was the runner-up, with a combined time of 3:21:21. Members of Congress, their staff and Capitol Hill employees were able to secure their race bibs and packets early, thanks to the annual Race Packet Pick-Up, sponsored by Congressional FCU and Senate FCU. Also on hand for Packet Pick-Up were race partners/representatives: PSCU, CO-OP, CUNA, NAFCU, CUNA Mutual Group, and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In addition, a special guest appearance was made by 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Meb Keflezighi, shown above with Charlie Mallon. CREDIT UNION CHERRY BLOSSOM TEN MILE RUN The cold winds did not dampen spirits at the 44th Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run as thousands of runners competed and volunteers helped at the event on April 3. The winds were so strong that the race organizers were compelled to cancel the Kids’ Run and take all signs and tents away for safety reasons. “We greatly appreciate everyone coming out early in the morning and being so resilient during very challenging weather conditions,” said Charlie Mallon, chair of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom race committee and president and CEO of Congressional FCU. “We could not ask for more dedicated volunteers who rose to the occasion and were real heroes in my mind!” Credit unions celebrated their 15th year of title sponsorship of the iconic race, also known as the “Runner’s Rite of Spring,” and donating over $7.5 million to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals throughout the country. There were 22 credit union teams competing for the Credit Union Cup. The first place team was “Cash Us If You Can” from FRB FCU. Nearly 450 volunteers from 33 credit unions and partner organization helped at the race Health and Fitness Expo and on race day as corral and course marshals, and at bag check and water stops. Over 200 Members of Congress from 45 states, American Samoa, D.C. and Guam signed on in support as Honorary Race Chairs, and more than 660 congressional staffers competed in the race. Thirty-one year-old Sam Chelanga, a naturalized American citizen who was born in Kenya, won the 10 miler in a time of 48:25.1. The last American male to win Cherry Blossom was Chris Fox in 1990. Twenty-six year-old Kenyan Veronica Nyaruai Wanjiru won the women’s race in a time of 53:11.6. Conditions were less than ideal, with temperatures in the mid-30s and winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour during the race, thus slowing all runners’ times considerably. Notable finishes included 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Meb Keflezighi, age 40, who chose to run with the six-minute pace group and finished in 1:00:40:5; 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson, who ran a hard-fought 1:07:27 at age 58; and 66-year old Ben Beach, who finished his 44th consecutive Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in 1:40:24.

CREDIT UNION SACTOWN RUN Nearly 2,000 runners gathered in front of the California State Capitol on a gorgeous Sunday morning to participate in the 2016 CU SacTown Run, including more than 800 credit union employees and members. Close to 200 credit union staff and members worked the event as volunteers. After setting event records for money raised and runners registered, past champions Jordan Chipangama and Jane Kibii kept the momentum going by besting strong elite fields to win 10-mile individual titles and claim the $2,000 first prizes. As an added bonus, Kibii, a 31-year old Kenya native who has lived in Auburn, set the women’s course record by nearly a minute to take home an additional $500 course record reward. She also became the event’s first-ever, three-time champion. “The elite field was small, but strong,” said Chipangama, a 27-year old Zambian who trains in Flagstaff, AZ and who defended his 2015 title. “I have been looking forward to this race for a long time. I had to work hard from the beginning, but it was a great day.” Kibii broke the course record she set in 2015 thanks in large part due to the competition from Sara Hall, a former Stanford track and cross country champion from Redding, CA. “If it wasn’t for Sara, I would not have gotten the course record,” said Kibii. “She’s strong and she pushed me.” The SacTown Run served as the 10-mile championship for the USA Track & Field’s Pacific Association with a $12,000-prize purse awarded. Fourteen-year-old CMN patient Angela House kicked off the Awards ceremony with a wonderful acapella rendition of “The Climb.” Angela was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2014, and received treatment at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. “We’re pleased to join again with the Sacramento Running Association in hosting this great event. And we’re thrilled to say that, thanks to credit unions and businesses in California and Nevada, we have raised more than $1.1 million over the past five years to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals throughout both states,” said California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues President and CEO Diana Dykstra. Among those involved in this year’s event was SkyOne FCU COO Jeff Smith, who has a personal connection to the cause behind the CU SacTown Run—as a child, both he and his brother were patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “I have run the (Credit Union) SacTown (Run) every year since 2012 in honor of my brother,” he said. “He passed away 10 years ago and was a patient of Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles his whole childhood due to congenital heart disease. I remember going with my mother and him to his checkups two or three times every year, and how nice and caring everyone was at the hospital. … As a runner, when my credit union got involved with the CMN, it was a no-brainer, I was all in. I feel very honored to be able to help raise money for such a worthy cause, which helps so many families in their time of need, just like mine.”

CREDIT UNION FREEDOM RUN Sister runs supporting our troops and federal employees overseas are an important element of the Credit Union Miracle Day Family of Races. Service members as well as other U.S. citizens stationed far away appreciate the opportunity to participate in these races and feel connected to their homeland. For the past eight years, sister runs have taken place in: 2009 - Baghdad, Iraq 2010 - Kabul, Afghanistan 2011 - Camp Arifjan, Kuwait 2012 - Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany 2013 - Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany 2014 - Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany 2015 - Camps Arifjan and Buehring, Army Kuwait and Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany 2016 - Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany

2016 Credit Union Freedom Run Camp Arifjan, Kuwait Army Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) United States Support Group Kuwait hosted the 5th Credit Union Freedom Ten Mile Run on April 3rd at 0600hrs in Camp Arifjan. It was sunny with a slight cool breeze that the near 400 service members and DoD civilians and contractors appreciated while in pursuit of their personal records. The winner in the men’s category was MAJ Joel Schuldt at 58:46. The winner in the women’s category was SFC Josefa Antanez at 01:22:27. After the race all participants enjoyed the camaraderie that races foster, especially 10 mile races in Kuwait! The Defense Credit Union Council again proudly sponsored this year’s sister race. As noted by Arty Arteaga, President/CEO of the Defense Credit Union Council, “DCUC is honored to sponsor this Cherry Blossom sister race on behalf of DCUC’s Overseas Subcouncil, and we are equally proud and thankful to Army MWR for hosting this event and ensuring our troops and the DoD civilians have an opportunity to share and be a part of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in Washington DC!”

2016 Credit Union Freedom Run – Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany Andrews Federal Credit Union again proudly sponsored the 5th Credit Union Freedom Run in Wiesbaden, Germany on April 12. The estimated number of participants was approximately 230. There was a larger number of pre-registrants and children from Child and Youth Services, but the rainy weather may have hampered a larger turnout. The ten mile Overall Male was Timothy Moser at 1:12:25. The Overall Female was Jennifer Pullen at 1:21:53. “It was a fun day, rain and all,” said Jim Hayes, President/CEO of Andrews FCU. “Everyone at Andrews was 100% engaged. The kids were the real troopers. The rain didn’t bother them at all and watching them get their medals was really awesome and heartwarming. I’m really proud to be a part of this race and efforts. Great community event. And of course we love supporting CMN Hospitals.”
