Novel Electromagnetic Techniques

Workshop No.

This workshop provides an overview of selected electromagnetic techniques emphasizing solution provision to some inspection problems. Some applications will be presented such as weld testing using Balanced Field (BF), boiler tubes scanning by the Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (LFET), use of Saturation Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (SLFET) for tank floor scanning, Magnetite detection and Ferrous ECT. Comparison with the existing techniques will be presented. Power-point slides will be presented with interactive discussions.

Fitness for Service

The FFS assessment is to ensure utilization of full potential of equipment concerning its damage assessment with engineering perspective. The typical outcome of a fitness-for-service approach provides a “go/no-go” decision. When ‘end-of-life’ like conditions, FFS outcome may also provide guideline on management decision for continual use of component through de-rated design parameters. It can help setting up proper inspection schedules, modified maintenance procedures and more of monitoring systems. The exercise in totality tends to assure safe with full economic benefit as well as help to take informed decisions.

Environment-Assisted Corrosion Cracking in Carbon Steels Utilizing Advanced Ultrasonic Techniques

Environmental stress fracture or environment assisted fracture is the generic name given to premature failure under the influence of tensile stresses. A metal in a corrosive environment and under mechanical loading can fail due to one of three cracking modes depending on the nature of the environment and the applied stresses.. Material deterioration mechanisms are one of the Petrochemical Industry’s leading causes of ageing Pipe and Plant equipment failure, repair, and replacement. Surface initiated cracks caused by environmental cracking of 300 Series SS and some nickel base alloys under the combined action of tensile stress, temperature and an aqueous chloride environment. The presence of dissolved oxygen increases propensity for cracking. This course will discuss and review detecting, characterizing and monitoring stress corrosion cracks (SCC) and stain and stepwise cracks (SWC). This workshop will explore the technology, techniques and benefits of phased array and AUT mapping to detect /characterize / measure / monitor stress corrosion cracks and stepwise cracks in ageing plant equipment and pipe.

Guided Wave: Equipment Evaluation, Personnel Qualification and Practical Applications

Deterioration mechanisms are one of Saudi Aramco’s leading causes of pipeline failure, repair, and replacement. Utilizing advanced NDT technologies such as guided wave to detect and monitor deterioration can assist operational personnel in conducting RBI assessments and managing pipeline shutdowns. The capability of guided wave equipment and proficiency of personnel is vital to ensuring test reliability. This workshop will explore the process of evaluating guided wave equipment, qualifying personnel and practical applications at Saudi Aramco.

Eddy Current Array

Workshop No.

Following on closely from the establishment of ultrasonic phased array, eddy current array (ECA) is a rapidly growing technology with greatly improved POD and productivity compared to conventional eddy current techniques. ECA has been developed to enhance detection of circumferential defects in non-ferrous heat exchanger tubes particularly adjacent to or under the tube sheet where conventional bobbin probes struggle to detect such defects. ECA is also effective for surface inspection improving and in many applications the technology is replacing MPI, DPI and ACFM. This workshop will explain the theory of ECA and demonstrate several applications relevant to the oil & gas and power generation sectors. The presentation and practical demonstrations are geared towards Supervisors and Operation Managers who will benefit from hands on experience.

6

MFL/IRIS Tube Inspection

This workshop will focus on advances in the IRIS and MFL tube inspection techniques with particular reference to ferromagnetic heat exchanger tubes both with and without fins. Recent developments have eliminated the need for the MFL absolute channel drift compensation accessory. In the case of IRIS, the maximum turbine speed has increased to over 100 revolutions per second allowing for either greater probe pulling speeds or greater resolution. The latter is particularly significant in identifying pitting. Minimisation of the “dead zone” has allowed IRIS to be used more effectively on thinner walled tube. Supervisors and Managers will benefit with the knowledge they will gain.

The objective of this work shop is to provide an overview of commonly utilized standards in the petrochemical industry namely ASME B 31.1, 31.3, SEC V, API 1104 and AWS D1.1. Common misinterpretations will be discussed.Participants will understand the requirements of standards and codes and will be familiar with different international standards and codes used in the oil and gas industry and how to apply them. NDT and QA / QC personnel; fabricators, engineers and maintenance personnel will benefit from this course.  More information on the course shall be supplied on request. Thermal and Infrared Analysis

Workshop No.

Infrared Thermography is widely used for condition monitoring and nondestructive evaluation of materials. This workshop examines the application of the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum in a wide variety of applications. We will review the importance of understanding the nature of how heat behaves in materials and how this behavior impacts the measurement of temperature of materials. This will lead to examination of the use of various wavelengths of infrared for temperature measurement and material identification. Topics will include an introduction to active thermography and FTIR analysis.

Workshop No.

15

Digital Radiography

The topics we will cover during the work shop are the following: 1: Theory behind digital radiography 2: Workflow of digital radiography in a work environment 3: Important techniques and points to remember during digital radiography 4: International standards that govern digital radiography 5: Importance of software, dIconde, report generation and interpretation of radiographs.

Guided Wave Examination of Road Crossings

Workshop No.

This 4 hour workshop will focus on strategies that end users (pipeline operators) can implement to establish effective and fit-for-purpose Guided Wave Testing (GWT) assessment programs of direct-buried and cased road crossings. This will include discussion of specific quality-related aspects of GWT, pitfalls that should and can be easily avoided, assessment techniques and steps that should be noted in application-specific procedures, and ways by which the pipeline owner can evaluate and audit service provider inspection reports. The workshop will also provide samples of casing inspection outcomes and typical quality performance indicators that can be achieved.

Practical Heat Treatment

Aim of this workshop is to familarise personnel working in manufacturing metal industries as well as enginers involved in design/repair& maintenance of metal products with different types of heat treatments available for ferrous and non-ferrous materials and its alloys. To impart basic concept of heat treatment effectively, which involves heating and cooling of material and material propeerties can be altered as desired. A simplified approach to complex issues of heattreatment.

The Saudi Arabian Section (SAS) of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing was chartered in 1999. Since then, the section has grown to over 650 individual and corporate members. The section was founded in order to promote the discipline of NDT as a profession, provide a forum for exchange of NDT technical information through educational materials and programs, and facilitate standards and services for the qualification and certification of NDT personnel. SAS has established six successful regional conferences on NDT in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The SAS section is the most active section with the highest standing among the worldwide NDT community.

The Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE) was established in July 1972 by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MLSA) as a professional institution that helps Bahrain’s Engineers to contribute substantially to the development and modernization of Bahrain. BSE has vast experience in the organisation of international conferences, seminars and workshops on various subjects in the engineering arena.
