Notre Dame de Sion School

Mission Statement The Notre Dame de Sion School in Kansas City is an independent Roman Catholic school providing the highest quality college preparatory education from preschool through grade 12. Sion continues the tradition of the founding sisters, the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion, inviting students to encounter God in a Catholic atmosphere that respects all faith traditions. The school partners with families and the community to prepare students for socially responsible, values based leadership in a culturally and religiously diverse world.

Academic Information Academic Integrity Academic integrity challenges us to live up to the high standards of trust that should exist in any environment, especially an academic setting. We incorporate integrity into all aspects of our daily lives. In this we exemplify the facets of a Sionian education, helping us live honorably. Not only does a precedent of honor and respect improve relationships among students, faculty, and administration, but it also fosters self-reliance in each member of the community. As a college preparatory school, we can always improve the strength of independence and discipline in students and faculty alike; this Honor Code gives us a starting point on which to build all actions that we take as scholars. Sion Honor Code As a member of the Notre Dame de Sion community, I pledge to conduct myself honorably, to uphold personal integrity, and to respect others in all aspects of my life. Cheating is the copying, offering, requesting or receiving of unauthorized help on homework assignments, projects, labs, exams, papers or any work that receives a grade or score. Plagiarism is using others' ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of information. All ideas (not just quotes) borrowed from a source must be cited - they cannot be presented as one's own ideas. Even more specifically, a paraphrase that retains too much of the wording used in the original source must be altered to where it is a true paraphrase or changed to a direct quote, with quotation marks. In both cases the source must be cited. In the event of a cheating or plagiarism incident: •

There will be a conference with student and an administrator. Parents will be notified of the consequences imposed.

•

Appropriate consequence(s) will be applied. Consequences include and are not limited to one or more of the following:

•

o   a warning to the student o   a zero or reduced score on the assignment o   a requirement to submit an alternative assignment or take an alternative test, either being for reduced credit o   other consequences as appropriate for the situation Student will be ineligible to apply for NHS during the next application period.

•   Current membership in NHS will be reviewed. Two or more incidents of academic dishonesty could result in possible failure of the class, suspension or expulsion from school. 2

Letter grades are awarded for the quarters, the final exams and each semester. The semester grade is determined by averaging the two quarters (40% each) and the final exam (20%). Parents and students receive access to current grade and attendance information via Powerschool. Printed report cards are available upon request from the Registrar.

Grade Point Averages (GPA) Grade point averages are computed at the end of each quarter using grades in all classes except for those designated pass/fail. These quarterly GPAs are used for Honor Roll recognition at the Grande Assemblée. The cumulative GPA is computed from semester grades in all classes except for those designated pass/fail. Only grades from Notre Dame de Sion classes are included in the GPA; transfer grades, summer school grades, and online grades are not included. For GPA calculation, letter grades are awarded points as shown below: Grade

Academic Progress Academics are the first priority for Sion. Students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities must maintain a required level of scholarship to be fully eligible to participate throughout the season. Activities affected by the policy described below include: athletics, debate & forensics, cheer, dance, musical or play productions.

Eligibility Check Approximately halfway through each quarter and at the end of each quarter, the Assistant Division Head for Curriculum and Instruction will do a grade check for any student participating on an interscholastic team, sport, or activity. The dates of these checks will be noted on the school calendar. If the grade check shows more than one grade below a C-, the student will be immediately ineligible to participate in practices, rehearsals, games, tournaments, or performances for the week (Monday to Sunday). At the beginning of the following week, if the student’s grades have improved, they may submit to their coach or sponsor a form signed by the Administration that declares they are eligible to begin practice and participate in games, tournaments, etc. Once a student has been ineligible—even if her grades improve—coaches will require, and students will continue to submit, a weekly grade check form until the end of the season or production. Eligibility is based on the current school year. That is, final 4th quarter grades are not used for 1st quarter eligibility in the following school year.

Other Academic Requirements Cheer and Dance Auditions An unweighted cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above is required to try out for the cheer squad or dance team (except for incoming freshman). Once the season begins, the grade check policy described above is in effect for all active team members. Any girl that is becomes ineligible more than twice will be dismissed from the squad for the remainder of the season. STUCO & Class Officer, Club Officer, Publications Editor In order to run for office or be considered for an editorial position, a student may not have more than one grade below C- at the time of the election or selection process. Drama Auditions In order to audition for school productions, a student may not have more than one grade below C- at the time of the audition.

Academic Probation Sion students are preparing for college after graduation. Students whose cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 may experience difficulty being admitted to college. Furthermore, a GPA below 2.0 indicates serious deficiencies. The academic progress of such students is reviewed by the guidance counselors, Assistant Division Head for Curriculum and Instruction, and the Division Head. Such students will be formally placed on academic probation for the following semester. While on academic probation, the student may continue her attendance at school sponsored events (i.e. dances), but participation in other extracurricular activities (i.e. sports, drama, elected office) will be reviewed by the Administration and could be restricted. Parents of these students will be contacted by Assistant Division Head for Curriculum and Instruction. Any student with •

two or more failures in a given semester,

•

two or more semester failures in a single academic year,

•   and/or a cumulative GPA below 2.0 will jeopardize her ability to qualify for any scholarships and compromise her continued enrollment.

Advanced Placement Program Advanced Placement courses are available in the following areas: Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English Language (juniors), English Literature (seniors), European History, French, Spanish, Studio Art, U.S. Government & Politics, U.S. History and World History. The AP exams are given in May according to the national schedule. Studio Art students submit a portfolio in May for evaluation. Students' scores on these exams and portfolios are submitted to individual colleges for credit consideration. •!

All students are strongly encouraged to take the national AP exam. Students taking the national AP exam for a particular subject are exempt from the Sion spring exam in that subject.

•!

Students who elect not take the national AP exam must take a Sion spring exam at school during the regular exam schedule.

•!

If a student takes an AP test in the morning, it is optional for her to attend her classes that same afternoon; absence that day will not be counted against her.

•!

If a student has an AP test in the afternoon, it is optional for her to attend her classes that morning; absence that day will not be counted against her.

•!

In the days following a particular AP test, students are still expected to attend their Sion AP class at its regular time. Attendance will be counted against her if she does not attend the AP class.

ACCP Program Psychology, French, Latin, and Spanish are offered as part of the Advanced College Credit Program (dual credit program) through Rockhurst University. Students who have an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to enroll in the ACCP program. Students with unweighted cumulative GPAs between 2.50 and 2.99 must submit a form signed by their parents and a school official in order to enroll in an ACCP class. A Rockhurst University administrator will visit the school each semester to facilitate the enrollment process. Students earn grades and high school credit for these classes at Sion; college credit for successful completion of the course is also awarded by Rockhurst University and is honored at many area colleges and universities.

Semester Examinations Teachers are required to give a comprehensive semester exam in all departments with the exception of Fine Arts, Physical Education, Theology and Practical Arts. A copy of each exam must be submitted to the High School Administration before exams begin. The exam should be written to take approximately one and one-half hours to complete; students will have a maximum of two hours for the exam. As noted above, the exam score counts as 20% of the overall semester grade. Any student who misses a final exam due to illness must be prepared to take the exam as soon as she returns in the next available time slot. Missing an exam for any other reason will result in a score of zero for the exam. Students who have two exams scheduled at the same time may reschedule one of the exams to another slot where they are not taking another exam. The exam must be moved to a regularly scheduled exam time. The student completes a Conflict Exam form and gives it to the teacher whose exam they are rescheduling. Any other request to move a final exam from its regularly scheduled time must be submitted in advance and approved by the Administration.

Exam Exemptions Seniors and juniors are eligible to exempt exams in certain situations. An exemption form must be submitted in advance to the Administration; the forms will be signed & returned to the teachers. •!

After 1st semester, seniors who have missed 35 or fewer class periods may exempt an exam in classes where they have a grade of B- or above and have missed no more than five class periods. Seniors must have more than four exams scheduled in order to exempt any. If they have five exams scheduled, one may be exempted according to the conditions above. If they have six exams scheduled, two may be exempted. Exams in AP and ACCP classes may NOT be exempted.

6

•!

After 2nd semester, seniors who have successfully completed all requirements for their senior project, have completed their 100 hours of service, and who have missed 35 or fewer class periods in the second semester may exempt the exam in every class where they have a grade of B- or above and have missed no more than five class periods in the 2nd semester. Exams in ACCP classes may NOT be exempted.

•!

After 2nd semester, juniors who have missed 35 or fewer class periods in the second semester may exempt the exam in classes where they have a grade of B- or above and have missed no more than five class. Juniors must have at least four scheduled exams in order to exempt; exams in ACCP classes may NOT be exempted, but count as one of the four exams. An AP exam also counts as one of the four.

•!

No student will be required to take more than six exams during the exam period. ANY student who has more than six scheduled exams may choose to exempt one exam in a class where she has a grade of B- or higher and adequate attendance as described above. Finals in AP and ACCP classes may NOT be exempted.

•!

Seniors who miss a study hall class will not have this absence counted in their exemption total. Seniors with a study hall may leave campus after checking out and back in at the front desk. Parent permission is still needed for late arrival or early checkout; parents may submit a signed form to give standing permission for the semester. Seniors are required to be present for afternoon assemblies and presentations. If they check out and miss one of these activities, the absence WILL count against their exemption total. Seniors who leave campus during study hall without proper checkout will forfeit their right to excused checkout for the rest of the semester.

Students are responsible for the accounting of their own attendance through Powerschool.

Making Up Tests and Assignments Students who miss class are expected to check Google Classroom so they can be aware of any work that was missed. When a student misses a test or assignment for any reason, teachers will enter into the gradebook a score of zero (or score code equivalent to zero) until the work can be made up. Guidelines for make-up work: •!

Previously scheduled tests, quizzes, projects, or homework missed due to absence should be made up on the day the student returns from absence.

•!

Late arrival or early dismissal (appointments, sports, etc.) does not excuse a student from the test. If a student is in school on the day of an assigned test, she is responsible for the test. Teachers will work with the student to schedule a time for the test on the same day. However, a student will not be expected to miss another class in order to take a test, so teachers will exercise flexibility. Make-up tests should be scheduled at a mutually agreed-upon time during a study hall, before or after school. If a student is ill enough to be picked up by a parent and taken home, the test may be rescheduled.

•!

A student receives twice the number of days absent to make up all new tests and assignments.

Long-term illnesses, hospitalizations, etc may require special arrangements. These arrangements may be made with each individual teacher in agreement with Assistant Division Head for Curriculum and Instruction.

Scheduling and Class Changes Scheduling of classes for the following school year occurs on Registration Night for incoming freshmen and during the spring semester for current students. The master schedule is developed based on student requests, and counselors will work with students who are unable to receive all of their first-choice classes. All students receive their tentative next-year schedule over the summer. Once the school year begins, students may make necessary changes to their schedule during the drop/add period at the beginning of each semester. These drop/add changes require the signatures of counselor, parent or guardian, and the teacher(s) involved. Dropping or adding a course may not occur after drop/add period ends. However, students may still make a ‘level change’ –i. e. move from honors level to regular, etc. These level changes can only be made at mid-quarter, end of a quarter or semester. Level changes also require the signaturesof counselor, parent or guardian, and teacher(s) involved. In rare circumstances, a student may be allowed to drop a class after the final drop date. This drop must be approved in advance by the Administration, and it will be noted on the transcript with a grade of WP (withdrawn passing) or W (withdrawn). Regardless of their grade, the student will not receive credit for the withdrawn course. During senior year, student transcripts and current class schedules used during the college application process. For this reason, seniors are not permitted to make ANY schedule change, including level changes, after the 1st semester drop/add period. Exception to this would be granted only in rare circumstances and would be reported as needed to the colleges.

Coursework with Other Schools Students may be approved to take accredited courses online or with other schools under certain circumstances. Students are strongly advised against off-campus completion of required core classes or classes that are part of a sequence such as math or world language. The High School Administration must review and approve in advance any such course work. Courses taken during the 8th grade do not appear on the high school transcript, but can be used for high school placement. If a student earns high school credit for a course taken in middle school (usually by taking the course at a high school location), the grade and credit will be noted on the Sion transcript. However, the credit may not be used to satisfy one of Sion’s graduation requirements. For example, a high school credit for Algebra I earned in the 8th grade may not count as one of Sion’s four required math credits.

PE Requirements At Notre Dame de Sion High School, students must complete 1.0 credit in Physical Education for graduation. One semester (0.5 credit) must be earned in school sponsored PE class. Students are strongly encouraged to complete this requirement during their freshman year. If they elect not to complete the class credit during freshman year, it will be completed as part of sophomore, junior, or senior year. Currently, Sion offers the following Physical Education courses: •

Physical Education

Dance

• Life-Time Sports (seniors only) The remaining 0.5 credit can be earned in one of the following ways: A. Additional Sion PE class B. Two seasons of Sion sports, dance or cheer participation •

One season of a Sion sport requiring a minimum of five practices and/or contests per week earns 0.25 credit.

One entire cheer or dance season earns 0.25 credit.

A minimum of 80% attendance is required to earn 0.25 Physical Education credit. Students who miss more than 20% or more of scheduled practices/contests will not earn credit for that class or sports season.

At the end of the season, this form must be signed by the Head Coach and submitted to the student’s counselor for approval.

All PE credit will be awarded a pass/fail grade and will not be computed into the GPA.

• Students may earn up to 0.5 credits in this manner. Students participating in highly competitive athletic activities may apply to earn 0.5 PE credit. The application process & requirements should be discussed with the student’s counselor. (link to application process)

Failed Classes If a student fails either or both semesters of a class required for graduation, the credit must be made up in an accredited summer school or distance learning course. (Exception: first-semester failures in world language or math do not have to be made up in summer school if the student passes the second semester. The first semester grade of “F” remains on the transcript and is calculated in the grade point average. However, the student receives credit for both semesters.) Once the student has completed make-up work, the original grade of “F” remains on the transcript, but it is removed from the grade point average. The summer school grade and credit are noted on the transcript, but the new grade is NOT calculated in the grade point average. Any SENIOR who lacks sufficient credits to graduate may participate in the commencement ceremony ONLY if the deficiencies can be made up in the summer immediately following graduation.

KAIROS Retreatants must have good attendance records. Students who have missed more than the equivalent of 3 school days (21 periods) are not eligible to apply for Kairos. Students with too many absences--up to and including the day before leaving for the retreat--may not attend. Students must be present at school on the day the retreat begins. Students on Kairos are fully responsible for the classwork, notes, assignments, tests, etc. that they miss while on the retreat. All scored assignments and tests that were missed during the retreat must be completed no later than 4:00 pm THURSDAY of the week following the retreat. Students are responsible for scheduling with their teachers to complete missing work by this deadline. At a teacher’s discretion, students will be expected to take on time any previously-scheduled tests that occur on or after the TUESDAY following the retreat. Students must be prepared to submit previously-scheduled projects or papers on the day they are due.

Service Learning Notre Dame de Sion strongly values the benefits of service learning. For this reason, the successful completion of 100 hours of service within the defined categories, as well as the senior service project are required for graduation. For more details on the service curriculum, requirements and opportunities, please see the school website under the High School landing page and follow the Service Learning links. Students may also print out service forms to turn in service hours from this web page. ALL SERVICE HOURS MUST BE TURNED IN DURING THE SEMESTER IN WHICH THEY WERE COMPLETED IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENT. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PACE THEIR SERVICE LEARNING HOURS AT ABOUT 25 PER YEAR. I.E. FRESHMAN 20-25, SOPHOMORES 4550, JUNIORS 70-75, SENIORS 100. Service completed over the summer must be turned in by the beginning of September. Service completed over Christmas break must be turned in by the end of second semester. Senior Service Project hours will retain their due dates in second semester as determined by the Senior Service Coordinator. See the school calendar for the specific due dates. Recognizing that there are several different types of service that are valuable and productive, the service hours are broken down into three categories. 1.   Immediate Communities: Learning to give back to your immediate community is an invaluable lesson. Helping Sion work towards its mission, as well as assisting at your former school, church, sports teams, Girl Scout/4H clubs and at summer camps can contribute to the well-being of your immediate communities. Up to 25 of the student’s 100 hours may be completed. 2.   Practical Work: In this category, students give of their time and talents to benefit the suffering and needy in the local community through hands-on work at different social service organizations in the area. Service hours in this category might be: office work at a hospital, fundraising for a cause, organizing a food pantry, planning an event for a non-profit, etc. Up to 35 of the student’s 100 hours may be completed in this category. 3.   Working with Marginalized People: Recognizing that our hearts change when we meet and interact with real people who have real needs, the final service category asks you to work directly face-to-face with people who are marginalized and/or suffering. Service hours in this category might be: visiting elderly in a nursing home, working with the disabled, tutoring disadvantaged students, serving meals at a soup kitchen, working alongside the new owners of a Habitat for Humanity home, etc. At least 40 and up to 100 hours may be completed in this category. 9

After-school service opportunities are open to all Sion students. The Service Coordinator provides transportation for participants to and from the volunteer work location. By turning in a permission slip, a student commits to participate in a particular service opportunity. Preparing these opportunities requires time and sometimes a financial commitment from Sion as well as from the organizations we serve. Non-profits rely on help from volunteers. If a student cannot attend after having turned in the permission slip, she must inform the Service Coordinator at least 48 hours prior to the departure time or a pink slip may be issued. This allows for the possibility of finding new volunteers or making necessary adjustments. Students absent from school due to illness are excused.

International Exchange Programs Notre Dame de Sion has exchange programs with schools in Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, France, and Germany. In order to participate in the French exchange, a student should be a third-year French language student and should have earned a B average in her French language classes. All programs admit juniors in good standing; sophomores are invited to apply to certain programs.

Transfer Students Academically qualified students from other high schools may be accepted as transfer students at the start of each new school year. Occasionally a qualified student may be accepted to transfer mid-year between the first and second semesters. To help determine placement in math and foreign language classes, transfer students may be required to take a diagnostic test. The coursework and grades from a previous school are noted on the Sion transcript. Transfer students receive credit towards Sion graduation for equivalent coursework at a previous school. However, as noted above, letter grades earned at a previous school are not included in the Sion cumulative GPA.

Attendance Policies and Procedures High School Campus Office Hours: 7:00 am to 4:00 pm The building main entrance opens at 7:00am. All other entrances open at 7:30 am. Students arriving before 7:30 am can buzz for admittance. The school day begins at 8:00 am with a warning bell at 7:55 am. Occasional exceptions to this start time will be noted in advance on the school calendar. Dismissal is at 3:10 pm, again unless otherwise noted on the school calendar. If a student will be absent, a parent or guardian should telephone the school (816-942-3282, ext. 1105) before 8:30 am. This number is available 24 hours a day. A parent may also e-mail Mary Sell Meyer at [email protected]. If a student will be absent for an extended period (longer than one week), parents must notify the Head of the High School. Acceptable absences are those that occur with knowledge and/or permission of a parent or guardian. Any other absence (i. e., without advance permission from parent or school) will be considered truancy and disciplinary action will follow. Examples of acceptable absence include: •

Personal illness

•

Serious illness or death of a family member

•

College visits

•

Court-ordered subpoenas

•   Personal or family emergencies requiring a student’s presence at home. Student attendance is recorded per class period. All absences are recorded as periods missed. However, if a student is on a school-sponsored field trip, if she leaves early for sports competition, or if she is sent by the administration to represent the school, this will not be counted as periods missed. The total number of periods missed in a semester is used to determine eligibility for junior and senior exam exemptions as well as for other purposes. Each semester a student may have up to 35 periods of absences (equivalent to 5 school days) without penalty. A student must be in school for at least four periods if she is going to participate in any school-sponsored activity. This includes practices, games, rehearsals, performances and school-sponsored dances. If, during a student’s time at Sion, she develops a clinically-diagnosed physical, psychological or emotional illness that affects her academic performance, the school will confer with the parents and the diagnostician to determine the appropriate temporary accommodations.

Loss of Credit Students are expected to attend at least 80% of the meetings for each course they are taking. If a student misses 20% or more of the scheduled classes, the credit earned for the course and possibly her continued enrollment will be jeopardized. A 20% absence rate means a student misses the same class 8 or more times in a single quarter. 11

16-17 High School Parent/Student Handbook

Notre Dame de Sion School

Students who are absent in any particular class 17 times or more in a semester will lose credit for the class. In such cases of excessive absenteeism, the counselor and High School Division Head will review the student's status. In addition to losing course credit, the student may either be placed on probation or may not be allowed to enroll for the following semester or year. In the event of long-term illness or hospitalization, the school will partner with the student and her parents to develop a plan to avoid credit loss where possible.

Tardy Policy Students arriving late to 1st hour after the first bell of the day are marked tardy and must obtain a late slip from the front office to go to class. In the event of extenuating circumstances, such as extreme weather, traffic, etc., the school reserves the right to waive a student’s tardy. If the student arrives more than 20 minutes late, the student is marked absent for the period. Tardies are accumulated quarterly and the total for the year is recorded on the student’s cumulative attendance record. Repeated late arrivals to school are handled as follows: •

Three tardies to 1st hour will result in a detention. Every tardy after three tardies will result in a detention. Six tardies in the same semester will result in a detention and a parent conference.

After ten tardies, a student may lose the ability to exempt finals. Continued tardies will result in a parent conference, suspension or expulsion at the discretion of the Administration.

A student who is late to class any time after 1st hour must have a note from teacher, counselor or administrator. If she does not have a note, the classroom teacher will issue a pink slip.

Early Dismissal & Check-in/Check-out A student must have permission from her parent or guardian to leave the campus during the school day. This permission should be presented to the Front Office staff before 8:00 am including a reason for the early dismissal. Students will receive a pass for the pre-arranged dismissal to present to the classroom teacher. A student may NOT dismiss herself from school for an appointment or because she feels ill. In case of illness, students are to report to the Front Office so parents or an emergency contact may be contacted. Any student leaving the campus during the day for any reason must check out with the Front Office staff and, if returning before the end of the day, check back in as well.

Inclement Weather Closing The announcement of school closing on these days will be made on radio and television stations and on our website, www.ndsion.edu. Tune in after 6:00 am on such days. Children may be picked up during school hours should the weather become hazardous. However, once school is in session, dismissal will be at 3:10 pm.

Stealing/Legal Violations A student who is caught stealing in or out of school or in possession of stolen property at school or any schoolsponsored function may be subject to automatic dismissal from Notre Dame de Sion High School. A student convicted of a felony in or out of school will be asked to withdraw and may be expelled.

Substance Abuse Policy Any student demonstrating behavior that indicates an alcohol or drug abuse problem will be required to have an assessment completed by a licensed alcohol/drug assessor. A written report will be required for the student’s continued enrollment. Assessment and treatment are the financial obligation of the student’s parents or guardians and may take up to three days to complete. The student will remain in an out-of-school suspension until said report is returned to the High School Division Head.

Procedure for Breath Alcohol Testing The following guidelines have been provided by Drug Free Sports: 1.   Breath alcohol testing (BAT) of students and/or their guests may be conducted at selected school events. 2.   Selection of students and/or their guests for testing will be made based on an approved random selection basis, suspicion or a combination of both methods. 3.   The decision to test a student or guest based on suspicion will be made by a member of the administrative staff and may be based on a number of factors including but not limited to the student’s and/or guest’s behavior, observed use of alcohol by the student and/or guest, alcohol odor or physical signs of possible alcohol use. 4.   Breath alcohol testing may be conducted by an outside, independent entity selected by administrative staff and certified to conduct BAT.

Dances and Guest Events Guests attending special dances, such as prom, must be registered in advance with the Assistant High School Division Head and must abide by the same school regulations and policies as Sion students. Students must arrive at dances no later than one hour after the dance is scheduled to begin. Students may leave a dance one half hour early with permission from the Assistant Head of the High School or High School Division Head. Once a student leaves a dance, she and her guest(s) will not be re-admitted and will be required to leave campus. Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes and firearms are not permitted. If there is any evidence of use of these items, the student's parent or guardian will be called to pick up the student and her guest(s), and further disciplinary action will be taken. The school reserves the right to administer a Breathalyzer test during school or at any school-sponsored event. This includes, but is not limited to, dances, games, club or team social events, community or volunteer service work etc. If the test indicates that a student and/or her guest(s) has/have been drinking, her parents and the parents of the guest(s) will be contacted immediately and will be asked to come and pick up the student. In the event that the guest's parents can’t be reached, the parent of the Sion student will be called to come and get the student. Please refer to the Substance Abuse Policy regarding handling of drug/alcohol use issues.

Request for Review The Assistant High School Division Head is the first point of contact for all disciplinary issues. Along with a student’s counselor and parent communication, the Head of the High School will also participate in disciplinary matters as necessary. If appropriate, after addressing concerns with these administrators, a conference may be requested with the Head of School, who is the final recourse in all school matters.

Student records are released only through the registrar’s office. As stated in the enrollment contract, no report cards, transcripts, 19

academic recommendations, diplomas or verification of academic records in any form are released until all financial accounts are current. Notre Dame de Sion abides by the Statement of Principles of Good Practice of the National Association for College Admission Counselors. Students are expected to answer questions from universities related to academic and disciplinary records accurately and thoroughly. NDS will respond accurately and honestly to any questions related to student records and reserves the right to report to colleges and universities to which a student applies any incidents of honor or disciplinary violations that result in suspension or dismissal from the School, regardless of the grade level or time of year in which the incident occurs. The student will be advised to inform the college or university under separate cover if this situation occurs.

Residency and Family Status All students attending Notre Dame de Sion must live with their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). The only exception is residence under adult supervision with acceptable written parental consent on file with the school. In this situation the school will look to the supervisory adult to fulfill all responsibilities normally assumed by the parent(s) or guardian(s).

Re-Invitation to Sion Each winter, The Faculty and Administration will review each student’s academic and social record for the year. In most cases, a student’s invitation to return for the following year will be issued directly. However, in a limited number of cases, a student’s performance might warrant further examination. In this case, the School may defer a re-invitation decision until the end of the school year. In these cases, the student and parents will be invited to discuss the matter with the School and work together toward a strategy to address the issues of concern.

Confidentiality & Right of Inspection All school personnel will keep information confidential as long as no one’s life, health or safety is at stake. Parents will be promptly notified of teacher, counselor or administrative concerns regarding their daughter. As a private institution, Notre Dame de Sion School has the right to inspect school facilities used by students, as well as the contents of anything brought onto school property or to school activities. This includes, among other items, backpacks, automobiles, and lockers.

Photo Release All parents are asked to sign a consent form allowing their children to be photographed during the year. Often photos are released for public relations purposes. You will be notified whenever possible.

Anti- Harassment Policy In the words of our Vision statement, Sion is a "nurturing community where Catholic values, integrity, and respect prevail." There is no room in a Sion school for behaviors such as bullying and harassment. If incidences of this type occur, immediate, negative consequences will follow and parents will be contacted. A sincere apology will be facilitated and counselors will help restore a relationship of trust and respect between the students involved. Sion strives to create an atmosphere where each student feels supported by peers, teachers, counselors, and administrators. The actions of each person in the Sion community affect the entire community. Therefore, students are encouraged to view their own actions as having an impact on their peers and their teachers. Concerns about bullying and or harassment should always be shared with a member of the counseling or administrative staff. Severe bullying and or harassment incidences may result in suspension or expulsion. Any student endangering herself or others, or threatening to do so, immediately affects the welfare of the community. If the Administration believes a student poses a threat to others, the student may be removed from the school immediately and is subject to suspension or expulsion. 20

16-17 High School Parent/Student Handbook

Notre Dame de Sion School

All members of the Sion community are obligated to notify a responsible adult in the community (preferably the High School Division Head or Assistant High School Division Head) to insure the safety of the individual(s) at risk. Professional care of the student making the threats may become a requirement for continued enrollment. The counseling department will be responsible for coordinating such care. All counseling sessions shall be the financial responsibility of the student’s parents or guardians. If you are uncomfortable bringing this situation to the attention of an adult you know, call the Missouri School Violence Hotline at 866.748.7047. Your call may be anonymous.

Student Pregnancy Policy Notre Dame de Sion, as a Catholic school, reveres life. The Administration will work with a student and her family in the event of pregnancy so that the student may continue her education. It may be appropriate at some time during the pregnancy for the student to continue her education at home, depending on her physical condition. Married students may not attend classes at Notre Dame de Sion, and they may not participate in any school activities including graduation.

Student Demonstration Policy In an academic community that values independent thought and encourages free expression, there will be occasions when students desire to raise awareness about issues, debate topics of interest, or demonstrate in support of a particular cause. While the school respects differences of opinion and supports free discussion, any community must have guidelines for constructive, respectful expression. This document outlines Notre Dame de Sion’s policy on protests and demonstrations. •

Just as most cities and towns require advance permission for demonstrations, marches, and rallies, Sion requires that students file a written request with the Head of Notre Dame de Sion at least two weeks prior to the event. The division head will convene a meeting including elected student leaders to consider each request.

•

Demonstrations and protests must respect the fact that Sion is a religious institution.

•

Students must remember that the grade school campus includes students from Montessori school through Grade 8. Younger students may not understand, nor may their parents wish to have them exposed to certain controversial topics. The administration reserves the right to restrict demonstrations to areas specific to a division.

•

Demonstrations that bring embarrassment or discredit to the school will not be approved.

•

Students may not miss a class or other obligation to participate in any demonstration.

•

Certain days of the school year may be deemed inappropriate for demonstrations because of special events.

Students demonstrating without advance permission will be deemed in violation of the disciplinary code and will be required to discontinue any demonstration. Failure to comply will result in further disciplinary action.

Self-Harm Procedure In an effort to serve the best interests of each student, as well as the general community, Notre Dame de Sion strives to ensure the personal safety and well-being of each member of the student body. With this in mind, when a student presents or reports with issues of self-harm or is seen to be a potential danger to others, the division level counselor will perform a risk assessment to determine the status and needs of the student. If, in the counselor’s professional estimation, it is decided that a student is, indeed, at risk for harming self or others, the counselor will institute the following procedures: 1.   Counselor will explain to the student that there is a need for further intervention in order to protect his or her well-being. 2.   Counselor immediately contacts the division head and requests that an adult be sent to the counseling office to assist. 3.   Counselor contacts student’s parents explaining the situation and requests that they come to the school for consultation. 21

16-17 High School Parent/Student Handbook

Notre Dame de Sion School

4.   When parents arrive, the counselor informs them in detail of the situation, letting them know that they will need to obtain an evaluation--medical, psychiatric or psychological--before their child will be allowed to return to school or participate in any school-related activities. The counselor will also provide resources where such an evaluation can take place as needed. 5.   Parents are given a Medical Clearance Form and a Consent to Release Information, both to be completed and signed by the evaluating medical professional. Both forms must be faxed or brought to the school by the parents before the student is allowed to return to classes and school-related activities. 6.   In certain circumstances, before the student is allowed to return to school, the division head and counselor will also need to communicate with the evaluating medical professional via telephone conference to obtain more in-depth information about the student’s condition and safety as well as the optimal treatment recommendations. 7.   The Division Head and counselor will then review all information and determine the best course of action for the student and inform the parents. Parents are told that the medical professional’s recommendations must be followed in order for the student to return to school. Once parents have enlisted the services of a therapist/counselor or other recommended follow-up care, they will need to complete a Consent to Release Information form giving permission for the school counselor and the treating professional to exchange information about the student’s progress. 8.   Prior to the student’s return to class, the grade level team will also be informed about any necessary information, precautions and/or accommodations so that they can assist in the student’s recovery and maintain safety on campus. 9.   Until it is determined that the student has made satisfactory progress and recovery, his or her progress will be monitored through the division counselor’s office. If progress is not reasonable and the student is unable to maintain an agreed upon level of functioning at school, the situation will be reviewed by division and school leadership to decide the best course of action for the student.

Health Policies & Procedures Medication Policy By state law, school personnel are prohibited from providing or administering prescription or over-the-counter medication such as aspirin, cough remedies, etc. Notre Dame de Sion High School does not employ a full-time licensed nurse or medical care provider.

Health Forms State Law dictates that Health and Immunization records must be on file the first day of school. Noncompliance will result in students being sent home until current health forms are on file at school. Health forms are sent to the parent/guardian during the summer. These forms must be completed and turned in. Proof of immunization will be required at Registration for new students only. Students may not participate in P.E., Swimming or extracurricular sports unless they have a health form on file.

Required Hepatitis B Immunization The Missouri State Board of Health has mandated that all preschool children born after January 1, 1990, be immunized with the Hepatitis B (HB) vaccine [available free of charge for all Missouri residents up to 18 years of age]. Please consult your doctor about adding this to the other required immunizations.

Illness at School If a student is not feeling well, she may lay down in the sick room for one class period. If the student continues to feel poorly, she must call a parent to come pick her up or give permission for her to drive herself home. NO student may be released to go home until a parent or someone on the emergency contact list has spoken to someone in the front office or an administrator.

Spectator Decorum for All Sports Notre Dame de Sion School and its Athletic Department have set the following regulations concerning student and adult spectator decorum. Any athletic competition may be suspended when the conduct of its teams, students, or fans is unsportsmanlike, resulting in actions, which are detrimental to individuals, schools, and the 22

public welfare and are prejudicial to the purpose of competition. This provision has been invoked in situations involving crowd control problems on the part of visiting schools as well. The following regulations will be strictly enforced at all sporting events, whether home or away: •

Vulgar, unsportsmanlike, rude language or cheers will not be tolerated.

•

Signs must show good taste. Signs on poles or sticks are not permitted.

•

Law enforcement officers and school administrators have the authority to remove or arrest any spectator whose conduct is detrimental to the activity taking place.

•

ANY STUDENT VIOLATING ANY OF THESE REGULATIONS AT HOME OR AWAY EVENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO ATTEND FUTURE EVENTS FOR A SPECIFIED TIME.

Parent Event and Volunteer Information Student-Parent Social Events The Sion tradition includes events that unite each girl with her parents/guardians in a special way. These popular activities include a Mother/Daughter Luncheon in the fall and the Father/Daughter Dance in winter, as well as several other occasions. The Social Activity fee covers most parent social events.

Fundraising Activities Fundraising is an absolute necessity at Sion, as tuition does not cover the full cost of educating each student. To maintain the fiscal integrity of the school, while continually enhancing the educational experience of our students, several school-sponsored fundraising events are held each year. All parents are expected to participate in these fundraising activities. •

Fall Festival – An enjoyable afternoon of outdoor games, entertainment, arts and crafts, and inflatables.

•

Annual Giving – This ongoing campaign is essential to making up the difference between tuition and the actual cost of a Sion education. The Annual Fund Drive helps cover operational expenses, including technology, teacher salaries, building maintenance and student activities.

•

Gala Auction – This dinner and auction benefits both campuses. A volunteer committee comprised of parents from both campuses plans the event. A gift-gathering party is held for Locust families in support of the Gala Auction.

•

Gift-Gathering Party (Trivia Night at the Grade School). A fun, adults-only evening of food, drink and entertainment, including a small auction.

Student Services and Activities Religious Formation As a Catholic School, Sion offers a variety of prayer experiences. Once a month we gather for an all school Eucharistic celebration and offer Mass every Friday at 7:20 am. Students are welcomed into the chapel twice a semester for Eucharistic Adoration; ecumenical prayer services are a part of theology classes and we gather as a school community for an interfaith Thanksgiving service. Students attend retreats with their class and quarterly Masses take place in Our Lady of Sion Chapel. Seniors have the option of attending an intensive fourday Kairos retreat. All students are expected to attend Masses, prayer services and retreats during the school day. Non-attendance must be arranged with the High School Division Head.

Counseling Services In the event it becomes apparent a student may be experiencing problems such as alcohol abuse, drug abuse, depression, eating disorders, etc., the Administration, with the recommendation of the school counseling staff, reserves the right to request that the family seek an evaluation. The results of the evaluation will be sent to the school in a written report. The student will be asked to follow the prescribed treatment if the report warrants her doing so. If the family desires, the school counselor will provide a list of facilities and professionals who can be of assistance in these matters. Assessment and treatment are the financial obligation of the student’s parents or guardians. 23

Maison Advisory Program A strong advisory program provides support for students, parents, teachers, and administrators by fostering individual development, academically and personally, so that each student can maximize her experience at Sion. Students are grouped by "houses" to experience a community within the larger community. Students meet 2-3 times a month with their advisory group to exercise leadership, plan and conduct service projects, and participate in social events within the school day.

Junior Ring Ceremony The Sion school ring, designed exclusively for the school by Cartier, is only available from Balfour. Juniors receive their class ring and the school colors from the seniors in a special ceremony symbolizing the passing of leadership in the school by the graduates to the next senior class. Students who attend Sion during the junior year as part of Sion’s foreign exchange program may participate in the Ring Ceremony, but do not receive a class ring. Attendance at this ceremony is mandatory for all seniors and juniors. Necessary absences need to be approved by the Head of the High School.

College Night In cooperation with Rockhurst High School and St. Teresa’s Academy, Sion offers a College Night in the spring. Representatives from colleges and universities around the country come and give students and their parents a preview of their institutions.

Graduation Sion’s graduation includes many special traditions. The ceremony begins with Mass in the morning followed by brunch for the graduates and their families. The commencement exercises are held that evening. The graduates wear formal white dresses and carry four red roses. Each graduate receives a laurel crown symbolizing achievement; crown bearers selected by the graduate and her partner carry the crowns. The top 5 scholars participate in the ceremony, with the Valedictorian and Salutatorian delivering special addresses. Traditional songs are also performed in French. To be Valedictorian or Salutatorian, a senior must have attended Sion for at least three full years.

Field Trips Students will be given a permission form for parents/guardians to sign prior to a field trip. Students with excessive absences or students who are failing any class may be denied permission to go on field trips during the school day. Students will be permitted to drive or ride with another student ONLY if the parent has indicated so on the permission form.

Lost and Found Lost and Found items will be placed on shelves in the vending room next to the dining room. Unclaimed items are donated to charity. The school is not responsible for items or valuables left in classrooms, hallways or athletic areas. This includes items left in locker over summer break.

Clubs & Student Organizations Club membership helps students to grow as individuals, to explore diversified interests, and to promote school spirit. Each girl is encouraged to join clubs of interest and to make a serious commitment to them. Each club elects officers as needed annually in the spring. Club officers work with a faculty moderator to plan meetings and oversee activities of the club. Most clubs will meet during the school day on either purple or white club day. A club-meeting schedule is established at the beginning of each school year. Some clubs may establish additional meetings outside of the school day. 24

Vive Sion Et Notre Dame. ______________________________________________________ School Song Sion, the joyous echo repeats Your name so dear to our hearts; Sion, we are your conquest And we will be your defenders. On this beautiful day, we are proud To proclaim that we are your children To place ourselves under your noble banner, And to offer you our hearts and our songs. Long Live Sion's banner May her two colors wave everywhere. May our whole soul go into our song. Long live Sion, let us sing in chorus. Long live Sion, let us sing in chorus. Let us sing in chorus, long live Sion and Our Lady.
