The Irish will play at historic Matthews Arena, the nation’s oldest SERIES INFORMATION indoor ice arena, for the first time since a 3-3 tie on Oct. Irish vs. Huskies 27, 2001. RUSSO RACKS UP HONORS: Notre Dame senior defenseman Robbie Russo was justly-rewarded for his big weekend against UConn, earning not only the Hockey East Warrior Hockey Player of the Week honor, but also the NCAA’s first star of the week accolade. Russo scored and assisted on the third period equalizer in a 3-3 tie Goaltenders MIN W-L-T GA SVS SV% GAA on Friday, Jan. 16. On Sunday, Jan. 18, Russo netted a Chad Katunar 28:34 0-0-0 0 7 1.000 0.00 hat trick to fuel Notre Dame’s 6-1 victory over UConn. The fourth-round draft pick of the New York Islanders couldn’t have found a better road setting for that hat trick either as it came at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, home of the Islanders’ AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Additional information on Russo leading the nation’s defensemen in both goals and points can be found inside this packet.

RANKINGS: Neither Notre Dame nor Northeastern received any votes in this week’s USCHO.com poll or the USA Today/U.S. Hockey Magazine rankings. RUSSO RUSHES TO THE TOP: Defenseman Robbie Russo leads all blueliners nationally with 24 points and 11 goals. The 11 goals are three better than his next closest defensive competitors while the 24 points are one better than Minnesota’s Mike Reilly. His 13 assists tie for seventh nationally as well. Russo’s 11 goals are already the ninth-most for an entire season by a Hockey East defenseman since 2002-03. He has the only hat trick in the country this year for a blueliner and the only one in Hockey East since at least the 2011-12 season. That individual +14 mark ties for seventh in Hockey East but, impressively, has come on a team which is only +5 in goal differential on the season. Notre Dame has outscored its foes 71-66 this year. The six players ahead of Russo and Gross play on either Boston University (+29), UMass Lowell (+29) or Boston College (+15), all of which have far more significantly outscored their opponents this year affording its players an easier opportunity to have such lofty plus/minus ratings. JACKSON GETS NO. 400 Head coach Jeff Jackson recorded the 400th victory of his career on Jan. 18 when Notre Dame beat UConn, 6-1, at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Jackson became the

Game Notes • Page 2 seventh active coach to reach this milestone, but has coached at least five fewer years than each of the six coaches ahead of him (BC’s Jerry York, Michigan’s Red Berenson, Minnesota’s Don Lucia, UNH’s Dick Umile, Mercyhurst’s Rick Gotkin and Quinnipiac’s Rand Pecknold). Jackson’s efficiency in winning hockey games is remarkable. With a minimum of five Division I seasons, he leads the nation in career winning percentage at .663 and ranks third for averaging 25.0 wins per season. EIGHT IS GREAT: Both Jordan Gross and Mario Lucia ride eight-game point scoring streaks into Friday’s game at Northeastern. The identical runs tie for the longest Notre Dame point scoring streak since Ryan Thang recorded an 11-game streak from Feb. 9 to March 23, 2007. Gross and Lucia both contributed to the scoring on Dec. 5 at UMass and every game since. Lucia has seven goals and three assists for 10 points over the run while Gross has 11 points, coming on three goals and eight assists. In addition to Gross and Lucia’s active runs, Bryan Rust (Feb. 17-March 23, 2013) and Brett Blatchford (Dec. 13, 2009-Jan. 22, 2010) have had eight-game point streaks for Notre Dame since Thang’s. LUCIA LIGHTS THE LAMP: By tallying his 15th goal of the year on Sunday afternoon at UConn, Mario Lucia kept up the pace to rank second in Hockey East, one behind Danny O’Regan of Boston University who netted his 16th of the year on Sunday afternoon against UMass Lowell. Lucia’s 15 goals on the year are already just two shy of Bryan Rust’s 2013-14 team-leading sum of 17. With 21 points on his junior campaign, Lucia is tied for eighth in Hockey East. NOTHING GROSS ABOUT IT: Freshman defenseman Jordan Gross has made an immediate impact at both ends of the ice. His 16 points on the year (four goals and 12 assists) rank first in the nation among freshman defensemen and sixth in Hockey East among all rookies. Gross has done this while maintaining a +14 rating. MOST 2014-15 POINTS BY FR. 44 SHOTS: On Jan. 16, during a 3-3 tie, Notre Dame got 44 shots on net through a UConn defense notoriously adept at blocking shots. The 44 shots on goal were both a season-high for the Irish and the most surrendered by UConn in a game this year. The 44 shots are Notre Dame’s most in a Hockey East game and the most in any contest since firing off 45 shots on goal against Lake Superior State on Jan. 18, 2014. The Irish last took more shots in a conference game on Feb. 2, 2013, taking 47 shots during a 2-2 tie at Ohio State in CCHA play. A LOOK AHEAD: The Irish return home to the Compton Family Ice Arena next weekend for a pair of games, Jan. 30-31, against New Hampshire. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 6-2-0 but the two Notre Dame wins were the biggest of them all as the Irish claimed wins in both of the NCAA Tournament matchups between the sides. Notre Dame eliminated the Wildcats from both the 2008 and 2011 NCAA Tournaments, the latter victory coming in Manchester, New Hampshire. UNH got some revenge last year when the teams met for the first time as conference rivals and the Wildcats swept the Irish, 4-2 and 5-2, in Durham, on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. A LOOK BACK AT CONNECTICUT Fri. Jan. 16: Notre Dame 3, UConn 3 (at ND) Notre Dame peppered the Connecticut net all night long, taking a season-high 44 shots on goal, but Husky netminder Rob Nichols was able to save 41 of them to help preserve a 3-3 tie. Just four seconds after UConn committed a major penalty, at 6:27 of the first, Notre Dame

broke through into the scoring column. Steven Fogarty won the faceoff back to Jordan Gross who passed to Robbie Russo who added to his goal count by blasting a slap shot past a screened Nichols. The Huskies would knot the score at 1-1 before the end of the opening period when Spencer Naas found himself alone in the slot and converted on a feed from behind the net. Mario Lucia put the Irish back on top 2-1 at the 8:45 mark of the second period with his 14th goal of the year off of a great assist from Austin Wuthrich who deftly slid the puck across the crease to Lucia. The Huskies showed some speed to score two goals 1:21 seconds apart late in the second period and take a 3-2 lead into intermission. Notre Dame’s hustle earned a power play when Sam Herr’s clean break in on net was interrupted by a holding the stick infraction against Jacob Poe. Notre Dame equalized the contest 1:44 into the man-advantage and 11:37 into the third. Wuthrich netted his seventh goal of the year off of the rebound of a point shot from Russo. For the game, Notre Dame outshot UConn, 44-20. Sun. Jan. 16: Notre Dame 6, UConn 1 (at UC) Robbie Russo became the first Notre Dame defenseman to score a hat trick since 1988, lifting the Irish to a 6-1 win over Connecticut at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. The win is also the milestone 400th of Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson’s 16-year career. The Huskies broke through first with a tally just four seconds into their first power play of

the game. Kasperi Ojantakanen’s wrister from the point found its way through a screen, past Cal Petersen and into the Irish net off of the far post at 16:16 of the first period. Notre Dame tied the game just two seconds after a power play expired with 47.1 seconds left in the first period on a booming one-timer from Robbie Russo. The fourth line for the Irish came through in the second period as two Notre Dame skaters recorded their first career points to give the Irish a 2-1 advantage. Ben Ostlie fed Joe Aiken for a wrist shot from the faceoff dot to Nichols’ left which beat the UConn netminder’s normallynimble glove. Notre Dame doubled its lead on the power play at the 18:59 mark of the second period when Mario Lucia collected his own rebound on the doorstep and slipped a backhander into the goal for a 3-1 Notre Dame advantage. Russo scored his second of the game just 2:55 into the third period on a slapper from the point. Jordan Gross picked up a helper on Russo’s goal, extending his point scoring streak to eight games. Russo completed his hat trick at 13:09 of the third period on a 190-foot empty netter as the Huskies pulled Nichols for an additional attacker on the power play. Notre Dame closed out the scoring at the 17:05 mark of the third period as Justin Wade netted the first goal of his Notre Dame career. Petersen made 28 saves in the Irish net.

IRISH DEEP-SIX HUSKIES Notre Dame’s 6-1 win over UConn on Jan. 18 marked its second-largest win of the season, trailing the seven-goal margin in its 7-0 victory over Niagara on Oct. 25. The five-goal margin of victory against UConn was Notre Dame’s widest over a Hockey East foe since beating Boston College, 7-2, on March 14, 2014, at Conte Forum, in the first game of a Hockey East semifinal series that the Irish ultimately claimed. A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER: After starting the season with a 5-2-0 mark in October, the Irish fell on hard times in November, turning in a 1-6-2 record. Notre Dame rebounded to go 3-1-0 in December. The Irish are now 8-2-0 in the month of December over the past three seasons. FIVE FOR VINNY: Sophomore center Vince Hinostroza snapped out of his own four-game, pointless streak, putting up five assists in the two-game series at Massachusetts. Hinostroza had two assists in the 7-5 win on Dec. 5 and then followed that with a three-assist game in the 4-0 win on Dec. 6. The three-point game was the fifth of his Notre Dame career and the three assists marked the third time in two seasons that Hinostroza has had that many in one contest.

MR. ZERO: Freshman goaltender Cal Petersen recorded his second career shutout on Dec. 6 when he stopped 14 shots in a 4-0 win over Massachusetts. He becomes the first Notre Dame freshman goaltender to have two shutouts in his rookie years since Mike Johnson had two in 2009-10. Petersen’s first shutout came on Oct. 25, when he kicked out all 23 shots he faced in a 7-0 win over Niagara. That shutout came in his third career start, as he joined a long line of recent Notre Dame goaltenders to get a shutout in their first three starts. Johnson (2009) and Tom O’Brien (2008) recorded shutouts in their first career starts while Jordan Pearce (2006) and David Brown (2003) did it in their second starts. Petersen joins Brad Phillips (2009) who recorded his first career shutout in his third start. For the season, Petersen is now 6-8-2 with a 2.56 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. SCHNEIDER SCORES: Senior Peter Schneider’s two-goal game against UMass on Dec. 5 marked the third time in his career that he has scored twice in a game. The previous games came on March 14, 2014, at Boston College and Nov. 13, 2013, versus Merrimack. For the season, Schneider has three goals and four assists for seven points.

Game Notes • Page 4 FOUR FOR FOGARTY: Junior Steven Fogarty enjoyed a productive weekend when the Irish faced UConn on Jan. 16-18. Fogarty had a pair of assists in each game for a four-helper weekend. Fogarty’s 13 points on the season include a team-high five power play points. He helped set up both of Notre Dame’s power play goals against the Huskies. IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT INFO: Notre Dame’s appearance in the Florida College Hockey Classic was the third in-season tournament for the Irish this year. All-time, Notre Dame has appeared in 44 in-season tournaments in the 47-year history of the program. In those tournaments, the Irish have finished first nine times; have been second nine times (including the 2014 Florida College Hockey Classic) and third 10 times in the program’s history. Notre Dame has finished fourth 16 times, including twice this year in the Ice Breaker Tournament and the Shillelagh Tournament. The last time Notre Dame won an in-season tournament came in 2012 when the Irish won the Ice Breaker Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. SPECIAL TEAMS IMPROVING: Notre Dame’s struggles on the power play continued in the second half as the Irish went one-for-17 between the two games in Florida and the two against Western Michigan. Things have started to turn around, however. Notre Dame had a power play goal in both games of the UConn series and have now scored with a man-advantage in each of the last three games. Notre Dame went two-for-seven on the power play last weekend against the Huskies. For the season, Notre Dame is just eight-for-98 with the man advantage for an 8.3% conversion rate that ranks the Irish 57th in the nation out of 59 teams. SIX IN THE NHL: With Bryan Rust playing in his first NHL game on Dec. 13 for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Notre Dame now has six former players playing in the National Hockey League. Rust joins Erik Condra (Ottawa), Anders Lee (New York Islanders), Riley Sheahan (Detroit), Ian Cole (St. Louis) and Kyle Palmieri (Anaheim). The most players the Irish have ever had in the NHL at one time is seven. CAREER YEAR: Irish junior left wing Thomas DiPauli (Caldaro, Italy) chipped in a pair of assists in the 7-5 win over Massachusetts in December and, at that early juncture of the season, already had career highs in both assists and points. DiPauly presently has 14 assists and 18 points this season. The speedy forward had just three goals and two assists for five points in 26 games during an injury-filled 2013-14 season. As a freshman, he had his previous best season with five goals and seven assists for 12 points in 41 games. Through 24 games this year, he is fourth on the Notre Dame scoresheet with his 18 points.

2014-15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Hockey THE BIG KAT: Sophomore goaltender Chad Katunar stopped a personal three-game winless skid (0-2-1) with the win over Massachusetts on Dec. 5. Katunar made 20 saves while giving up a season-high five goals versus the Minutemen. In his previous three starts, Katunar set a career high for saves in a game, making 35 stops in the overtime loss to Union College on Nov. 28. Prior to that, in back-toback games against UMass Lowell (Nov. 2021), Katunar had a then career-high, 32-save game in back-to-back contests against the River Hawks. For the year, Katunar is 4-3-1 on the year with a 2.97 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. FRESHMEN FIRSTS: Two members of Notre Dame’s 10-man freshman class recorded firsts in the series with Massachusetts. Defenseman Luke Ripley scored his first collegiate goal in the 7-5 win on Dec. 5. Fellow blueliner Tony Bretzman (Mendota Heights, Minn.) picked up his first assist in the 4-0 win on Dec. 6. Several other rookies had big nights in the 7-5 win over the Minutemen. Center Connor Hurley scored the first goal of the game and added an assist for two points on the night. Right wing Jake Evans (Toronto, Ont.) set up the goal with an assist. Defenseman Jordan Gross scored a goal and added an assist for a twopoint night. EXTRA HOCKEY: With the 3-3 overtime tie against UConn (Jan. 16), Notre Dame is now 2-1-3 this season in overtime and has played the extra period in six of its last 15 games. The Irish picked up their overtime wins on Nov. 14 with a 3-2 victory at Merrimack and Dec. 28 with a 3-2 win over No. 6 Miami. The overtime win over the Warriors was the first for Notre Dame since March 1, 2014 when the Irish took a 2-1 overtime win at Boston College’s Conte Forum. The first overtime game this season came on Nov. 1 with a 2-2 tie versus Vermont. The other tie was another 2-2 tie, this time versus UMass Lowell on Nov. 21. JACKSON ON THE RADIO: Catch Notre Dame hockey head coach Jeff Jackson during the season on Weekday Sportsbeat with Jeff Jackson beginning in January. Along with play-byplay announcer Darin Pritchett, Coach Jackson will talk Irish hockey live from CJ’s Pub in South Bend on WSBT Radio 96.1 FM and 960 AM on January 12 and 26, February 9 and 23 and (depending on the team’s postseason schedule) March 2 or 9 and March 23. WORST LEAD IN HOCKEY: Notre Dame has built two-goal leads in nine of its 14 home games this season and is 5-2-2 in those contests. The two losses and the two ties have come in each of the four home games that the Irish have had a two-goal lead - versus Vermont (Nov. 1), against UMass Lowell (Nov. 21), versus Union College (Nov. 28) and against Western Michigan (Jan. 10). In two of the four games, Notre Dame has had the two-goal lead in the third period.

IRISH VERSUS HOCKEY EAST: Notre Dame closed the first half of the 2014-15 season with a 4-2-2 record in Hockey East after picking up the first road sweep in Hockey East play at Massachusetts and is now 5-3-2 in league action this year. The Irish were 9-9-2 last season in the conference in their first season in the league. Notre Dame also had a 3-2-0 mark in the Hockey East playoffs. Here are Notre Dame’s all-time records versus each Hockey East team with the 2013-14 or 2014-15 records against conference opponents, depending on whichever is more recent. Team Record (2013-14) Boston College: Irish are 16-19-2 (3-2-0) Boston University: Irish are 5-3-1 (3-0-0) Connecticut: Irish are 1-0-1 (1-0-1 in ‘14-’15) Maine: Irish are 5-2-0 (1-1-0) Massachusetts: Irish are 5-4-0 (2-0-0 in ‘14-’15) UMass Lowell: Irish are 0-4-1 (0-1-1 in ‘14-’15) Merrimack: Irish are 5-4-1 (1-1-0 in ‘14-’15) New Hampshire: Irish are 2-6-0 (0-2-0) Northeastern: Irish are 4-6-1 (1-2-0) Providence: Irish are 4-2-1 (1-0-1) Vermont: Irish are 3-1-2 (1-0-1 in ‘14-15) NATIONAL LETTERS-OF-INTENT: Irish head coach Jeff Jackson announced on Dec. 9 that four student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to attend Notre Dame. Burke is a 5-11, 175-pound right-handed forward who currently plays for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (USHL). Fischer is a 6-1, 212 right wing who is currently a member of the USA National Team Developmental Program with the Under-18 team. Malmquist is a 5-10, 165-pound, left shot forward who is playing high school hockey at Edina High School. Dello, the lone defenseman, checks in at 6-1, 190 pounds and plays for the Tri-City Storm of the USHL. Those four will join three others currently playing in the USHL who signed letters of intent in previous years. 2014 WORLD JUNIOR A CHALLENGE: Two future Notre Dame players that have signed national letters of intent played on the gold medal-winning U.S. Junior Select Team in the World Junior A Challenge, Dec. 14-20, in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. Forward Andrew Oglevie (Fullerton, Calif.), a member of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, was joined by defenseman Bobby Nardella (Rosemont, Ill.) of the Tri-City Storm. Oglevie was also a member of the 2013 World Junior A Challenge team that won the gold medal. Oglevie, who signed his letter of intent during the 2012-13 season, scored two goals and added an assist for Team USA in the 2014 tournament. Nardella assisted on a pair of goals to help lift the Americans to the gold medal. PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Junior left wing Mario Lucia was named the Hockey East/Warrior player of the month for October. In seven games, Lucia had seven goals and two assists for nine points. He had 19 shots on goal with a 36.8% shooting percentage and was +5. Lucia scored his first career hat trick in October and added one game-winning goal. His seasonbest six-game point streak (7g, 2a, 9 points) and three-game goal streak (3g, 1a, 4 pts.) were snapped in the 5-0 shutout by Minnesota on Nov. 7. Lucia leads Notre Dame with 15 goals and is second on the roster in scoring with 21 points (15g, 6a). He currently has an eight-game point scoring streak. BLOCK THAT SHOT: Defenseman Andy Ryan (Jr., Brighton, Mich.) leads Notre Dame with 37 blocked shots this season (1.54 per game). The 37 blocks stand tied for 11th among all Hockey East players. He is followed by freshman Luke Ripley (Kitimat, B.C.) who has 35 blocks (1.46 per game in his rookie season. He ranks tied for 14th among Hockey East players.

2014-15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Hockey IRISH VERSUS TOP-RANKED TEAMS: Notre Dame played its eighth game this season against a ranked team when the Irish defeated #7/#6 Miami on Dec. 28 in Estero, Fla. They are currently 2-4-2 this year against nationally ranked opponents. The Irish are 1-2-2 at home against ranked teams, 0-2-0 on the road and 1-0-0 at neutral sites. A year ago, Notre Dame was 8-8-1 against teams ranked nationally, including 2-1-0 versus No. 1 ranked teams. The Irish were 3-2-0 at home, 5-3-1 on the road and 0-3-0 at neutral sites. PENALTY SHOTS: Freshman center Connor Hurley was awarded a penalty shot with 6:37 left in the third period on Nov. 15 versus Merrimack. After making a great move to deke goaltender Rasmus Tirronen, Hurley had the whole net to shoot at, but the puck rolled off his stick and wide of the goal. The penalty shot was the first for a Notre Dame player since Dec. 6, 2013, when Jeff Costello was awarded one versus Massachusetts and scored in a 5-3 win. The last time a Notre Dame player missed a penalty shot came on Jan. 26, 2013 when Anders Lee was stopped in a game versus Ferris State. IT’S IN THE WATER: This year’s Notre Dame roster features seven Minnesota natives, including four from the town of Edina. The four, junior Steven Fogarty, sophomore Ben Ostlie and freshmen Connor Hurley and Bo Brauer, were all teammates with the Hornets in recent seasons, winning Minnesota State titles in 2010 (Fogarty and Ostlie) and in 2013 (Hurley and Brauer). Those four are following a long list of former Hornets to attend Notre Dame, a list that includes former captains Anders Lee, Ryan Thang and Dan Carlson. The remaining three Minnesota natives are junior Mario Lucia and freshmen Tony Bretzman (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Jordan Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.). BY THE CLASSES: Notre Dame’s 25-man roster includes five seniors, six juniors, five sophomores and nine freshmen. The Irish return 11 monogram winners from last season with that group including seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender. SECOND SHUTOUT: University of Minnesota goaltender Adam Wilcox’ 20-save, 5-0 shutout for Minnesota on Nov. 7 was the second this season versus Notre Dame. On Oct. 12, in the third-place game of the Ice Breaker Tournament at Notre Dame, Minnesota Duluth’s Matt McNeeley stopped all 23 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout win. The 5-0 shutout by the Gophers was the largest margin of victory in a shutout against the Irish since Dec. 8, 2004, when Notre Dame was shutout 8-0 at home by Michigan.

THE SHOOTIST: Throughout his Notre Dame hockey career, senior defenseman Robbie Russo has been encouraged by his coaching staff to shoot the puck. As a senior, the message has sunk in, as the talented defenseman leads the Irish in shots on goal with 82 through the first 24 games. His next closest competitor for the team lead is Vince Hinostroza with 65. Russo had a career-high nine shots on goal in the 5-3 win over Lake Superior State on Oct. 17. BRIGHT KIDS: For the eighth consecutive year, University of Notre Dame athletic programs again rank as the best in the country in graduation rates, based on Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures released by the NCAA -- including first-place ratings in 21 sports, including ice hockey, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball while football ranked fourth. Among the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision institutions, Notre Dame had the highest percentage of its sports with 100 percent scores (for the ninth time in 10 years), with a .909 figure (20 of 22). In hockey, Notre Dame achieved a 100 GSR rating, to rank first (tied with Bowling Green and Air Force) among Division I-A football-playing institutions. From Chicago, he traveled by car to South Bend, arriving just after 5 p.m. to prepare for the game. He spent 14 hours flying and then a two-hour trip in the car, covering seven time zones. In both games, Schneider took a regular shift, saw action on the power play and penaltykilling units and set up one goal each night by Mario Lucia. On Sunday, Nov. 2, Schneider rested. MEET THE CAPTAINS: University of Notre Dame hockey coach Jeff Jackson named his team captains for the 2014-15 season on Sept. 3. Junior center Steven Fogarty will serve as the team captain while senior Peter Schneider and junior Sam Herr were selected as alternate captains. In making the selections, Jackson said, “I’m really happy with this group of captains for the coming season. All three - Steven (Fogarty), Peter (Schneider) and Sam (Herr) have strong character and with two juniors as captains, it becomes a two-year process for them leading the team. All three have the heart and voice of the team. They will do a great job for us.” Fogarty is a two-time monogram winner and follows a long line of Irish captains from Edina, Minn., joining the likes of Anders Lee, Ryan Thang and Dan Carlson in recent years. Fogarty played in 33 games last year, scoring three goals with eight assists for 11 points. Schneider is the lone senior and is coming off a junior campaign that saw him record career highs in goals (eight), assists (eight) and points (16). He is strong in the classroom with a 3.95 grade point average with a double major in finance and economics plus a minor in actuary. Herr had a breakout season as a sophomore, playing in all 40 games with 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points, all career highs. He had four power-play goals and four game winners and was +14 on the season. PRESEASON HOCKEY EAST POLLS: Two preseason polls by the Hockey East coaches and the media that covers Hockey East have the Irish in two different spots at the start of the regular season. The coaches and the media were in agreement on the No. 1 spot in the poll as Providence College was the top pick by each group. In the coaches poll, the Friars received

seven first-place votes and 127 total points while the Eagles had three firstplace votes in the second spot on the way to 120 points. Notre Dame was picked third in the coaches’ poll with 94 points. Thirty-six media members selected Providence in the top spot with 26 first-place votes and 414 points. Boston College was second with eight first-place votes and a total of 399 points. The Irish received 231 points to tie Vermont for the seventh spot in the media poll. The results of both polls: Hockey East Coaches Poll Points 1. Providence College (7) 127 2. Don Lucia, a 1981 Notre Dame graduate and the head coach of the Gophers, faced his son, Irish left wing Mario Lucia. Don Lucia played four seasons (1977-81) at Notre Dame for Coach Lefty Smith, as a defenseman where he saw action in 124 games, scoring seven goals with 23 assists for 30 points. Now in his 16th season as the head coach at Minnesota, Lucia has been a collegiate head coach for 28 seasons. Mario, a junior, leads Notre Dame in scoring with eight goals and two assists for 10 points in 10 games. In five games versus his dad’s team, Mario has two goals and one assist for three points. The Irish are 1-4-0 in the five contest. A second member of the Minnesota coaching staff, associate head coach Mike Guentzel, also sent a son to Notre Dame. Ryan Guentzel ‘11 played for Jeff Jackson at Notre Dame from 2007-11 and was a member of two Frozen Four teams (2008 and 2011). ALL IN THE FAMILY: Freshman Anders Bjork (Mequon, Wis.) becomes the fourth Notre Dame hockey-playing son to follow his father to Notre Dame. His dad, Kirt Bjork, was an AllAmerica at Notre Dame during the 1982-83 campaign and is tied for 12th on Notre Dame’s all-time points list with 161, after notching 76 goals and 85 assists in 141 career games. He is currently a director of regional development in Notre Dame’s development office. Anders Bjork also has another family tie to Irish hockey, as his cousin is former Irish standout Erik Condra, who is currently a member of the Ottawa Senators. As the fourth son to follow his father to Notre Dame, Anders joins current Irish left wing Mario Lucia (Don Lucia) and graduated players Kevin Nugent (Kevin Nugent, Sr.) and Rory Walsh (Brian Walsh) to play at Notre Dame after their fathers. A NIGHT OF FIRSTS: Three members of the Notre Dame freshman class scored the first goals of their careers in the weekend series versus Niagara. Dawson Cook (Cadillac, Mich.) scored his first career goal at 4:18 of the third period on Oct. 24 to give the Irish a 5-2

lead. On Saturday night, Connor Hurley and Anders Bjork got the first lamplighters of their careers. Bjork’s goal came short-handed, the first of the season for the Irish. Hurley finished the weekend with a goal and three assists for four points. Two other freshmen - right wing Jake Evans and defenseman Jordan Gross - also had multipoint weekends. Evans had a career-best three assist game on Oct. 24 and then scored his second goal of the season on Oct. 25. Gross chipped in three assists on the weekend, including two in the 7-0 shutout.
