About Catalyst Founded in 1962, Catalyst is the leading nonprofit membership organization expanding opportunities for women and business. With offices in the United States, Canada, Europe, and India, and more than 500 preeminent corporations as members, Catalyst is the trusted resource for research, information, and advice about women at work. Catalyst annually honors exemplary organizational initiatives that promote women’s advancement with the Catalyst Award.

Letter From the President & Chief Executive Officer Welcome to the 2012 Catalyst Awards Dinner and the Catalyst 50th Anniversary Celebration! Fifty years ago Catalyst was founded by a visionary leader, Felice N. Schwartz, to create a place for talented women in the corporate workplace. She found pockets of support—in academia and the public sector—but much of the business world was not ready for her transformative ideas. Yet she persisted, determined to change workplaces and change lives with the simple idea that women could and should have leadership positions in the corporate hierarchy. In time, businesses began to see the value and necessity of hiring, developing, and advancing women. Catalyst helped these organizations make positive change and educated them about the salient issues related to women and work. And Catalyst celebrated women and organizations that were role models for others with the Catalyst Award. The 2012 Catalyst Award-winning initiatives show how far we’ve come since 1962. Built on the basic truth that a more inclusive workplace will lead to more business and more satisfied customers, the initiatives drive business results in a way that I know would make Felice proud.

Tonight, I am honored to celebrate the following initiatives with you:

Commonwealth Bank of Australia Opening the Door for Gender Diversity Sodexo Making Every Day Count: Driving Business Success Through the Employee Experience As we toast the leaders of these extraordinary initiatives and reflect on how much the workplace has changed since 1962, we must remember that our work is not done. I know that all of you are poised to continue to use your power to expand opportunities for women and work. As you do, Catalyst will be your staunch ally, giving you the knowledge, insight, and tools you need to further transform the workplace.

Ilene H. Lang President & Chief Executive Officer Catalyst

Welcome From the Dinner Chair Welcome! As Chair of Catalyst’s Board of Directors, I have raised my glass to many Catalyst Award-winning initiatives on nights like tonight—enjoying the company of business leaders who share my passion for creating inclusive workplaces and advancing talented women to business leadership.

Sodexo’s initiative, Making Every Day Count: Driving Business Success Through the Employee Experience, is a systemic strategy to provide the tools, resources, and support necessary to ensure success of all employees, including women. The initiative focuses on Sodexo’s more than 15,000 salaried employees working at 6,000 client sites and offices throughout the United States. It leverages a top-down, bottom-up, middle-out strategy to drive diversity and inclusion, inform diversity strategies, engage employees across levels and functions, and influence client employees.

This year, it is a special honor to serve as Dinner Chair, as we celebrate two outstanding corporate initiatives to advance women and Catalyst’s milestone 50th anniversary.

These initiatives demonstrate the fact—which Catalyst has promoted since 1962—that what’s good for women is good for business. To the leaders who have engineered their success, I give hearty congratulations. To Catalyst, I offer my wholehearted appreciation and thanks for your collective vision and leadership over the past 50 years. I look forward to your continued leadership into the future and the significant progress that will be achieved.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA)’s initiative, Opening the Door for Gender Diversity, seeks to increase the number of women in senior leadership positions through a variety of strategies and programs aimed at breaking down barriers women and diverse populations often face in the workplace. CBA demonstrated its commitment to gender diversity by setting the first public target in Australian financial services for women’s representation at senior levels. By valuing, respecting, and providing opportunities for all its people, CBA leverages their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to provide excellent customer service to an equally diverse community.

About the Catalyst Award The Catalyst Award annually honors innovative approaches with proven results taken by organizations to address the recruitment, development, and advancement of all managerial women, including diverse women. Catalyst’s rigorous, year-long examination of initiatives and their measurable results culminates in intensive on-site reviews at finalist organizations. By celebrating successful initiatives, Catalyst provides organizations with replicable models to help them create initiatives that are good for women and good for business. Catalyst posted application materials to its website and sent materials to public and private companies and professional firms beginning in January 2011. Applications were evaluated against the following criteria: • • • • • • •

Business Rationale Senior Leadership Support Accountability Communication Employee Engagement Innovation Measurable Results

4 | 2012 Catalyst Awards Dinner & 50th Anniversary Celebration

Members of the Catalyst Award Evaluation Committee determined a select number of initiatives to examine during intensive on-site visits, which included interviews and focus groups with a wide range of employees and leadership to assess each initiative’s effectiveness and how it permeates the organization. Winners were selected in December 2011. Catalyst welcomes applications for the 2013 Catalyst Award. Applications must be postmarked by June 1, 2012. Catalyst assesses a variety of strategic approaches related to women’s advancement for the Catalyst Award. Discrete, specific efforts as well as broad initiatives, such as those that facilitate cultural change, are considered. These efforts may be targeted to various underrepresented groups and may encompass a range of diversity and inclusion efforts. Your initiative need not focus exclusively on women, but results must demonstrate that the initiative supports women’s advancement, including that of diverse women, and that it can be sustained over time. To obtain an application or more information about applying, contact Julie S. Nugent, Chair, Catalyst Award Evaluation Committee, at (212) 514-7600, or visit http://www.catalyst.org/page/71/apply-for-the-catalyst-award.

2012 Award-Winning Initiative Opening the Door for Gender Diversity Commonwealth Bank of Australia

As a result, the initiative supports the overall goals of the organization. The initiative, which has challenged the organization to rethink the way work gets done and identify sustainable solutions for increasing the previously low levels of employee engagement, grew out of a broader workplace culture transformation started by former CEO Ralph Norris, and continues under the leadership of current CEO Ian Narev. Unique programs include mandatory and in-depth unconscious bias training for all senior leaders, a rigorous talent review process, and a progressive approach to building a flexible workplace. In addition, a suite of talent strategies, cross-cultural activities and investments, and professional development and leadership programs—such as CommLeader, which helps identify and develop

leadership styles—supports CBA’s goal of a truly inclusive workplace. To create a culture of flexibility that rewards results over face time, CBA created innovative workspaces for many employees along with business-unit-specific offerings such as a Maternity Leave Register, which allows women on leave to apply for new opportunities, and implemented more traditional flexibility options, such as telecommuting, part-time work, and job share. Because of CBA’s strong support for flexibility, the proportion of employees who state they work flexibly (formally and informally) has increased from 35 percent in 2008 to 41 percent in 2011. Of those working flexibly in 2011, 36 percent are men. To ensure that leaders are held accountable for diversity progress, the CEO serves as Chair of the Diversity Council, which comprises the Executive Committee. Senior leaders are measured on diversity-related goals and performance indicators that are tied to bonus compensation. Strong metrics and results reinforce the power of this initiative. Women’s representation in executive manager and above roles has increased from 21 percent in 2005 to 30 percent in 2011, and the percentage of women on the board of directors also increased from 20 percent to 27 percent. From Branch Manager to CEO, women represent almost 45 percent of leaders in CBA. In addition, women’s engagement scores were above Gallup “world’s best practice levels” in three out of the last four years.

2012 Award-Winning Initiative Making Every Day Count: Driving Business Success Through the Employee Experience Sodexo Sodexo’s initiative, Making Every Day Count: Driving Business Success Through the Employee Experience, is a systemic strategy to provide the tools, resources, and support necessary to ensure success of all employees, including women. With a strategic focus on the business case and how diversity can drive employee engagement and business development, Sodexo’s diversity efforts have developed from a compliance framework to a strategic business imperative embedded in the fabric of the culture. The initiative leverages a host of professional development programs that present opportunities to share diversity lessons with staff and clients, provide training to different employee populations, and develop connections through strategic networking and robust mentoring. These programs are delivered through multiple channels, including eight employee network groups (ENGs) for diverse employees including women, African-Americans, and former military personnel. The ENGs serve as mechanisms to reach the geographically dispersed employee base and are crucial to the communication and development of diversity and inclusion programming; each ENG has its own individual development program designed to address relevant barriers. Sodexo’s IMPACT mentoring program, which connects employees across client sites, has resulted in a demonstrable improvement in women’s careers: 30 percent of women who participated in IMPACT received a promotion. The company assesses mentoring effectiveness by 8 | 2012 Catalyst Awards Dinner & 50th Anniversary Celebration

tracking return on investment and monitors ENG members’ career progress through an innovative employee network commitment survey. Sodexo also prioritizes training and education, which includes numerous learning labs, workshops, and events throughout the country. Sodexo’s progress has led many client organizations to seek its guidance and support in developing and implementing their diversity and inclusion strategies and initiatives. Accountability for internal programs consists of complementary qualitative and quantitative components that ensure the progress of culture change within the organization. Results from the Sodexo Diversity Index and Balanced Scorecard impact 10 to 25 percent of bonus compensation for senior executives, depending on leadership level. In keeping with the organization’s long-term focus, this incentive is paid regardless of the company’s financial performance for the fiscal year. Additionally, CEO George Chavel chairs the Diversity Leadership Council and reports on diversity progress to an external diversity and inclusion Board of Advisors. The strategic nature of this initiative has led to strong results. Overall, from 2003 to 2010, the number of women in leadership at Sodexo has increased by 74 percent. During that same time period, the number of women on the executive committee increased from three (18.8 percent) to five (20 percent). Women’s share of positions in the executive pipeline increased from 23 percent to 33 percent, with racially/ethnically diverse women’s share increasing from 6 percent to 9 percent. In addition, in 2010, engagement scores for women were at 71 percent, up 10 percent from 2006 and considered above the Aon Hewitt threshold for “best in class.”

Women, start your engines. Chantal knew her co-workers could conquer anything with a little support. So she organized the HP Women’s Network, which promotes the development, retention and visibility of 260 HP women across Munich. The group sponsors diversity summits, mentoring, speakers and social gatherings. They also publish newsletters and articles about women’s issues. Most importantly, Chantal helps women steer their own careers. Empowering lives: just one of the qualities that make HP a unique place to work. And the reason we’re the company where doing gets done. HP congratulates Catalyst on their 50th Anniversary and is proud to support their mission to advance women in the workplace.
