20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

PATIENT TESTIMONIAL: I wish to thank you for the wonderful service I received from the Killeen Free Clinic. I had come in with what turned out to be a hernia. I was extremely dismayed as there was no way I could financially deal with the situation. The pain I was in and my monetary situation were very concerning. Your clinic referred me to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX where the financial aid office gave me a tier level that asked for no co-pay at all. I did receive the needed surgery. I am 4 months into my healing, my pain is gone, I am able to eat and exercise. My life as a full time Texas A&M student is back on track. I am now able to go forward. I expect to graduate in spring of 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. I will be able to look ahead, get a wonderful job and give back to my community. I owe this progress to the Killeen Free Clinic. I would not have been able to function-I was not able to function until I was graced with the caring generosity of your clinic. I owe a huge debt to you all. Best, Randy R. Rhamy (used with permission)

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The past six months have been extremely gratifying and extremely challenging as the Free Clinic has added two full-day clinics to support the chronic care program. The patients we are providing care to many times have multiple health conditions that in some cases have not been treated for years. Through our many partnerships, patients receive lab work, medical appointments, medications and diabetic supplies at no charge to the patient. In addition to medical care, we are partnering with University of Texas and Texas A&M Agrilife to assist our nurse educator in providing diabetic and chronic disease education. Patients initially attend an orientation and sign a contract that they will attend appointments, follow up with recommendations from the social worker and provider and take their medications. In three months, the chronic care clinic has provided services to 350 new patients. Many positive health changes are occurring in just three months as patients are provided with medications, have medication education and management, and learn through the education classes how to better manage their disease. In addition, patients are offered the opportunity for counseling if depression or anxiety are diagnosed through the diagnostic tools they fill out as part of the enrollment process. The Free Clinic is providing gap medications through some donations from Metroplex Pharmacy, Americares and Direct Relief International, in addition to receiving reduced costs through Killeen Pharmacy. In addition, through the Prescription Assistance Program, patients receive free medications from pharmaceutical companies. In Jul-Sep 14, medications valued at $206,000 were donated through this program. The administrative staff and volunteers have been amazing. Appointments must be scheduled, charts prepared, charts inputted into the MedServe database, patients called, etc. It has been a time of many procedural changes, assessing a change, making more changes, and reassessing to make everything flow smoothly. Administrative costs have risen because of the addition of the Well Womens’ Clinic and the Chronic Care program. We need your support to assist us in meeting these expenses and the increased costs in such areas as medications and medical supplies. Since 1994, over 55,000 patients have received care at the Free Clinic. Please make a generous year-end gift to help us celebrate our 20th year. Your gift leverages so much more care for those in medical need in our community.

With this impactful gift, the homeless in our community will receive much needed care and medical support such as medications for chronic health conditions.

CARE MESSAGE

Through our membership in the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, the Greater Killeen Free Clinic received a grant from Care Message. This mobile phone/texting platform reminds patients of appointments, send customized messages, and sends texts regarding chronic conditions, i.e., “Have you taken your diabetic medication today?” Our volunteer administrative staff has been responsible for entering patient data to enable this program to be successful. We thank them for all their work!
