A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Financial Reporting You may have noticed a change in the way that the financials are being reported in the bulletin. In the past, the parish reported the amount of the Sunday collection from the week prior and a budget estimate of those funds collected electronically was included. Because a large portion of our collections are now received electronically and these amounts are reported only monthly, this is also the manner in which we will be reporting the collections in the bulletin. Hence, the collections for the entire month of December will be reported during the month of January, the January collections will be reported in February, and so on and so forth. Please notice that all the information regarding the collections will be there in the bulletin - it will be one month delayed in order to allow more accurate reporting of those funds collected electronically and at other times during the week. Since it is a monthly report and not a weekly report, the same report will be included each week of any particular month, but the report will more accurately reflect exactly what the parish is receiving during the course of a month. Thank you again for your generosity to the parish and may Almighty God bless you. In Christ,

Fr. Thomas A. Milota Prayer Shawl Ministry Just a reminder, we will be meeting on Wednesday, January 13th at 10am in the St. Paul Center. Pray with us “It is a holy and wholesome thing to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from their sins.” - 2 Maccabees 12:46 As a member of the Communion of Saints we are called to pray for the souls in purgatory, a duty created by compassion and charity, which we do at every Mass. But we should also remember to pray for our loved ones who have died, to pray for their souls. “Many persons think so highly of persons consecrated to God that they dispense themselves from the duty of praying for them after they have passed! What a grave error! ‘He was so good! Now from heaven he is praying for me,’ they say. To think highly of our deceased is charity, but to pray for them is a charity greater, wiser, surer.” - St. Augustine http://www.prayforsouls.org/about/faq.php http://www.holysouls.info/

The Baptism of the Lord

Luke’s Gospel Corner Today as we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, the Gospel is taken from Luke 3:1516, 21-22. The baptism inaugurates Jesus’ public ministry as John the Baptist announces that the “One who is to come, the One who is mightier than I will baptize with fire and the Holy Spirit.” God has visited His people and His Spirit will bring forth a new creation, a new earth. In the first reading from Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 the prophet foretells when God will assemble the heavenly host, enjoining them to speak words of comfort to His people and announce that their time of purification is at an end. The rough roads have been leveled and God will reveal Himself to His people. In Luke 2:13, the angel appears to the shepherds announcing that a Savior has been born: “And suddenly, a throng of the heavenly host appears singing, ‘Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth to a people favored by God.’” Isaiah’s prophesy has been fulfilled. God will bring comfort to His people. In the Responsorial Psalm, God’s glory is manifested in the vastness of His creation which He has brought into existence and which He sustains in His goodness. The wonder of creation stirs up a hymn of praise: “O bless the Lord, my soul.” In the last stanza of Psalm 104, the words from the familiar prayer “Come Holy Spirit” are rooted in the psalmist’s hymn, “When you send forth your Spirit they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.” In the Letter to Titus, Paul announces that “the grace of God” is now made manifest in the incarnation and redemptive work of Christ. In Him, we have become God’s chosen ones, not through our doing, but through God’s mercy. Christ has saved us “through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He richly poured out upon us.” Here, as in Ephesians 5:26, Paul tells us this is accomplished through baptism which brings about new life through water and the Holy Spirit. In today’s Gospel, while Jesus is at prayer following His baptism, the Holy Spirit descends upon Him as the Father proclaims, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Jesus is identified as God’s unique Son, the Messiah, and the Suffering Servant who was prophesized in Isaiah 53, who is sent forth by the Holy Spirit at the beginning of His public ministry. The first part of the Father’s announcement mirrors Psalm 2:7, “You are my son, this day I have begotten you.” The psalmist speaks of the enthronement of David’s heir, who will rule God’s people forever. The addition of beloved underscores Jesus’ unique Sonship which is also depicted in Luke 1:32, 35 and 9:35. “In you I have taken delight” is an allusion to Isaiah 42, one of a number of poems in Isaiah about the Servant of Yahweh, sent to be a light to the nations, to bring sight to the blind and set prisoners free.1 This allusion to Isaiah 42 also demonstrates how neatly the readings from the Old and New Testament selected by the Church today tie together on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Father’s announcement precedes Jesus’ Galilean ministry where He will announce the Kingdom of God through signs and wonders. A similar heavenly announcement will take place in Luke 9:26-28 at the Transfiguration which precedes Jesus’ journey into Jerusalem where He will open the gates of God’s kingdom to us through His suffering and death. Both announcements remind us that the Father of Mercies has sent His Son into the world to banish sin and death, to bring comfort to His people, and to save us “through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” For more information about Luke’s Gospel Corner email [email protected].

Back to Basics Liturgically Speaking: The Eucharistic Prayer, Part I After the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), we come to the center and high point of the entire celebration of the Mass, that is, the Eucharistic Prayer. The priest associates all those assembled with himself in the Eucharistic Prayer that he addresses to God the Father, through Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit. In the Eucharistic Prayer all of us join with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of sacrifice. It can be all too easy to let one’s mind wander at this most sacred of moments. One way to focus on the Eucharistic Prayer is to know its structure and meaning. The main elements of all the Eucharistic Prayers may be distinguished in this way: The epiclesis. This word from Greek means a calling down upon, or we might say “invocation.” In the epiclesis, the Church implores the power of the Holy Spirit that the gifts become Christ’s body and blood, and that the sacrificial Victim may be for the salvation of those who will partake of it. You can recognize the epiclesis as the priest extends his hands over the gifts and, usually, the altar server will ring the bells. The institution narrative and consecration. By the words of Christ the sacrifice which He instituted during the Last Supper is recalled and made effective here and now. This is a recalling of Christ’s familiar words at the Last Supper, “This is my body,” and “This is my blood.” These words are traditionally seen as the “form” or essential prayers that bring about the change, or transubstantiation, of bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood. Again, you will recognize this part of Mass also by the ringing of the bells at the altar. The anamnesis. Another word from Greek meaning, roughly, “remembrance.” By the anamnesis, the Church celebrates the memorial of Christ, recalling especially his Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven. Unlike a simple memorial, however, an anamnesis does not leave the events it recalls to the past, but makes those realities present here and now, so that we may participate in them. The oblation. An oblation is an offering to God, often the offering of a sacrificial victim. The Church gathered here and now offers the sacrificial Victim in the Holy Spirit to the Father. Not only is the body and blood of Christ offered to the Father at Mass, but we the faithful are meant to offer our very selves in union with the sacrifice of Christ. The intercessions, by which we realize that the Eucharist is celebrated in communion with the whole Church of both heaven and of earth, and that the offering is made for her and for all her members, living and dead. The concluding doxology. “Doxology” is yet another word from Greek, meaning “praise.” In the concluding doxology, the glorification of God is expressed and is affirmed by the people’s acclamation “Amen.” In our upcoming articles, we will follow Eucharistic Prayer III as a model as we look at these different elements. We welcome you to join us in praying the rosary and devotional prayers in the spirit of faith and in union with our Blessed Virgin Mother, as we fulfill the spiritual needs of our parish community. The Legion of Mary is the largest worldwide apostolic association of lay people in the Catholic Church who are devoted to our most Blessed Virgin Mother. Meetings are held every Monday evening from 6:15 to 7:45pm in the Ministry Center, Room 227, upper level. Contact Paulette Shea at 630-718-2127 if you have any questions. Elizabeth Ministry As Mary went in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was with a child to help and comfort her, so does our Elizabeth Ministry for all those who are in need. If you have experienced infertility, loss of a pregnancy, an infant or child death, you are not alone, many of our parish families have experienced the same and the Elizabeth Ministry would like to help you through it. On the other hand, if you are expecting for the first time, or you are new parents who just had a baby or adopted a child, the Elizabeth Ministry would like to celebrate with you and offer our services to you. Through prayers, adoration hours, and sharing personal experiences, our ministers will try to bring you some peace and comfort no matter what your situation is. Contact Sarah at: 630-809-5925 or email her at: [email protected].

Saint Vincent de Paul Society After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. As you help those who are suffering, know in your heart the truth of the words “you are my beloved in whom I am well pleased”. Please continue to help us by placing a donation in a green envelope found at the side and rear entrances of the church and chapel. We may be contacted by calling 630-355-1081. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul.
