A.A. Welcome

Al-Anon Welcome

Hello and welcome to the 2013 Western Roundup Living Sober Conference! My name is Lisa W., and I am an alcoholic, and I am honored to serve as your Chair.

Welcome to Western Roundup Living Sober 2013!

I feel blessed to have such an amazing Steering Committee, Co-chairs and their committees, volunteers and Advisory Board. They not only should be recognized, they should be applauded for their dedication, hard work and endless love, support and guidance. Living Sober has been a large part of my recovery for 18 years. Year after year it has been a time I look forward to because I get to celebrate the gift of sobriety with all of you in a wonderful setting as we share our experience, strength and hope together! This year I have chosen the theme “Carry the Message, Not the Mess.” When I was a newcomer I had no idea that a message was being carried to me. What I did know, however, was that I was experiencing a feeling of HOPE for the first time in my life. It never had occurred to me that drinking was not a moral issue; that in some way I was terminally unique and couldn’t “control or stop” on my own. Over time I have come to know a deep understanding of what alcoholism means and I have found a solution that is full of hope, love and faith. So whether you have been in the rooms for 30 days or 30 years, I hope this weekend you will continue to seek, to find and to stay in the solution. It truly is the easier softer way! So in the spirit of the theme, let’s give that feeling of HOPE to our newcomers and to each other this year.

2| W R L S

We are Bob K. and Arielle M., your Al-Anon Co-chairs. The journey of our service this year to create a meaningful conference has taught us many lessons about balance, letting go, and the power of simply showing up. Our individual and combined recovery has deepened and expanded this year. It’s been an absolute honor to serve the community and conference in this way. If your life and serenity have been impacted by someone’s drinking, including your own, we welcome you here in Al-Anon. We understand as few others are able and can help each other keep the focus on ourselves. If this is your first time attending this conference it can be an overwhelmingly powerful experience. Allow yourself time to reflect quietly in the Meditation Room located in Stockton or ask a person in our fellowship to share a few minutes of connection. You are not alone and while the welcome you receive may not show the warmth that we feel for you know that you do belong here, there is space for you to be safe and be heard. The Al-Anon workshops this year are broad brush strokes covering a wide range of experience, strength and hope: being in relationship with active alcoholics (Some Like ‘Em Wet), working through harmful self-talk (Taming The Gremlin: How To Quiet Negative Self-talk), building self-esteem (Esteemable Acts: Nurturing Self-esteem Through Service) to working the Steps (What is this God Thing: Steps 1, 2 & 3; Getting It Done: Spiritual Maintenance of Steps 10, 11 &12). Also feel free to join any of the A.A. & Al-Anon cosponsored workshops which promise to be both inspiring and entertaining.

This is your conference. Have fun, connect with your fellows, find inspiration in the message of others, and please reach out your hand and give your number to your fellows and continue to “CARRY THE MESSAGE, NOT THE MESS.”

We extend our gratitude to the Living Sober Steering Committee, the Advisory Board, all of the A.A. volunteers on the sub-committees and our most excellent fellow Al-Anon Committees members: Amber, Adam, Dave B. and Willie. Lastly thank you to John M. for leading the way and encouraging us to step forward to take our own recovery to a new level.

In love and service, Lisa W. A.A. Chair, Western Roundup Living Sober 2013

In Serenity and Solidarity, Bob K. & Arielle M. Al-Anon Co-chairs, Western Roundup Living Sober 2013

GETTING AROUND

Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the Parc 55. Please smoke outside, at least 50 feet away from building entrances. Please do not bring any outside food or drink into the conference level of the hotel.

The 9th Step A.A. Promises 1.

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. 2. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. 3. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. 4. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. 5. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. 6. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. 7. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. 8. Self-seeking will slip away. 9. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. 10. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. 11. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. 12. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.

MAP OF LEVEL 4 (Market St. Room is on Level 3)

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us - sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize, if we work for them. © Alcoholics Anonymous, p.83-84

I stand by the door. I neither go too far in, nor stay too far out. The door is the most important door in the world It is the door through which men walk when they find God. A Step Poem I took Step One, began to moan - I can't do this one on my own. I took Step Two, began to pray - restore me God, please now, today. I took Step Three, gave up my will - maybe God could love me still. I took a Fourth, I looked inside - nothing more would I hide. And on the Fifth, I said aloud— I've done some wrong, and I'm not proud. I took Step Six, and got prepared - to lose the defects, I was scared. Now I'm at Seven, take them away - my God, for this I truly pray. And on Eight, the list was long - amends to make for all the wrongs. I took Step Nine, put down my pride - amends made, I will not hide. Step Ten I take, each day I pray - I make amends along the way. And on Eleven I pray to know - each day God’s will, which way to go. I take Step Twelve, I'm like a bird - to others now, I spread the word.

Suggested Workshop Format (A.A.) (Do not read portions in italics) Welcome to the workshop of Living Sober 2013. My name is and I am an alcoholic. (Have your co-chair introduce them self.) Before we begin, please join me in a moment of silence followed by the Serenity Prayer: God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the Courage to change the things I can; and the Wisdom to know the difference. This is an open-discussion workshop. My co-chair and I will qualify and share for less than five minutes each, and then the floor will be open for other shares, discussion, questions and answers. Although this is not a typical meeting format, we ask that you be respectful of other people’s views and opinions, as outlined in Living Sober’s Policy of Mutual Respect. Also, we ask that you please limit your discussion to the workshop topic, and please keep your shares to three minutes or less. (Please qualify and share on the topic for less than five minutes. Your co-chair will do the same. After you are done sharing please direct the workshop discussion among the attendees. This may be as formal or as informal as you like, or as the size or group conscience of the workshop dictates. Close on-time with the prayer of your choice and encourage attendees to introduce themselves to someone they do not know after the meeting.)

Suggested Workshop Format (Al-Anon) (Do not read portions in italics)

The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous 1.

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable. 2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. 3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. 4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. 5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. 6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. 7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. 8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. 9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others 10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. 11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs

The Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous 1.

These meetings are designed to provide us with a safe place to share our individual experience, strength and hope. Therefore, cross-talk is not permitted. Cross-talk is defined as: interrupting or directly commenting on another person’s share. This is an open-discussion workshop. My co-chair and I will qualify and share for less than ten minutes each, and then the floor will be open. Also, we ask that you please limit your discussion to the workshop topic, and please keep your shares to three minutes or less. (Workshop leaders share their experience, strength and hope for about ten minutes on the topic and then open the floor for group participation. Close on-time with the Serenity or Unity Prayer.)

12 | W R L S 2 0 1 3 C o n f e r e n c e G u i d e

Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon A.A. unity. 2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority—a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern. 3. The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking. 4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole. 5. Each group has but one primary purpose—to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. 6. An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose. 7. Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions. 8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers. 9. A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve. 10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy. 11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films. 12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities. WRLS 2013 Conference Guide |

WORKSHOP RESOURCES

WORKSHOP RESOURCES WORKSHOP RESOURCES

Hi. My name is . Welcome to the workshop of Living Sober 2013. Let us open with a moment of silence followed by the Serenity Prayer: God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the Courage to change the things I can; and the Wisdom to know the difference.

13

SOME THOUGHTS ON “CARRY THE MESSAGE” “Taking advantage of technological advances, A.A. members with computers can participate in meetings online, sharing with fellow alcoholics across the country or around the world. Fundamentally, though, the difference between an electronic meeting and the home group around the corner is only one of format. In any meeting, anywhere, A.A.'s share experience, strength, and hope with each other, in order to stay sober and help other alcoholics. Modem-to-modem or face-to-face, A.A.'s speak the language of the heart in all its power and simplicity.” — ©2001 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, foreword to Fourth Edition, p. xxiv

"Our Twelfth Step - carrying the message - is the basic service that the A.A. fellowship gives; this is our principle aim and the main reason for our existence. Therefore, A.A. is more than a set of principles; it is a society for alcoholics in action. We must carry the message, else we ourselves can wither and those who haven't been given the truth may die." —The A.A. Service Manual, "A.A.'s Legacy of Service"

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

“Most of us feel we need look no further for Utopia. We have it with us right here and now. Each day my friend’s simple talk in our kitchen multiplies itself in a widening circle of peace on earth and good will to men.” — ©2001 AAWS, Alcoholics Anonymous, Fourth Edition, p.16

For more information, please visit www.livingsober.org Why Is There A Registration Fee? One of the most common misconceptions about recovery conferences and conventions is that they are A.A. meetings and since “there are no dues or fees for A.A. membership...” some say there should be no dues or fees to attend a roundup either. However, Living Sober Conference is a special event and not regular A.A. meetings as such. Living Sober incurs several basic necessary expenses to organize the convention. We incur charges to use the facilities and rent meeting/fundraising spaces, printing, as well as the necessary expense of covering our main speakers’ travel and lodging expenses. These are just a few of the expenses for which Living Sober is responsible. The goal for the Conference is to break even. As such, Living Sober charges an affordable, nominal registration fee. It is important to remember that as responsible members in recovery, we pay our own way.
