Welcome address We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the participants of the World Congress of Cardiology (WCC 2006). We expect that the congress will not only be the largest event of the year in cardiovascular medicine, but that it will also provide all of you with the best of science and education. The World Congress of Cardiology 2006 has been jointly organised by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the World Heart Federation (WHF). Together, we provide the opportunity for cardiologists and health care professionals from both developed and developing countries to present and learn about different problems and various approaches to management of cardiovascular diseases. This will be an enriching experience for all of us. All programme components of the ESC Congress, such as Hot Lines, Clinical Trial Updates, Named Lectures and FOCUS sessions devoted to interventions and imaging as well as to clinical practice, will hopefully attract as many participants as in previous years. More Meet-the-Expert sessions are added this year. All ESC Associations will present the most important data from their meetings. The World Heart Federation Science Initiatives is an added feature for this World Congress. Through community and patient care interventions, the seemingly inevitable advance of cardiovascular disease in developing nations can be prevented. A special presentation line on the global perspective will be organised. The Highlight Session will close the congress. Abstract submissions exceeded expectation and have been accommodated by increasing the number of posters. Overall, a total of 3917 abstracts were accepted and will be presented in one of the 127 oral sessions or in the Poster Area either as regular posters, moderated posters or e-posters. One of our aims is to help to optimise clinical practice. Therefore, a number of new ESC practice guidelines will be presented. The sessions presenting the results of European surveys and registries will analyse current practice patterns, and the impact of guidelines implementation on patients outcome. The highlight theme of this year’s Congress is cardiovascular diseases and ageing. This area is extremely important, since the community is advancing in age, and therefore the spectrum of our patients also changes. Several sessions, clearly marked in the programme, will be dedicated to this important topic. For the last few years participation of basic scientists has greatly increased. We are now able to offer not only to them, but also to all participants, an excellent Basic Science Track, together with the Science Hot Line session that gained a lot of interest when first introduced in 2005. We are delighted to be returning to Barcelona and hope that our 2006 Congress will enable all of us to share and celebrate our common passion for cardiovascular research and education.

Guidelines for Speakers All speakers giving a presentation in scientific sessions are requested to validate their presentation in the Speakers’ Service Centre (SSC) a minimum of 3 hours before the session starts or the day before if the session is at 8:30! Presentations received after this deadline cannot be guaranteed audiovisual support. Please note that the SSC is located in Zone 1, on the ground floor, at the left of the main Entrance. Peak hours of operation in the SSC are during coffee breaks and lunch breaks. In order to maximise your time in the SSC, and the attention that we are able to give you, we highly recommend visiting early in the morning or during the sessions. How to upload your presentation: Upload in advance of your presentation(s) is ONLY possible via My ESC (ESC Online Services), (www.escardio.org), with your usual username & password, from 16 August to 5 September (midnight GMT). ➤ For ALL other presentations (Chairpersons introductions, satellite symposia, etc…), bring them on a CD-Rom, DVD-Rom, Memory Stick or Laptop to the SSC ➤ All PCs in the SSC and the lecture rooms will run Windows XP and Office 2003 ➤ If you have technical questions regarding your presentation before the congress, you may contact [email protected] ➤ For general scientific questions, please contact [email protected] (Caution: please do NOT attach any presentation to e-mails) Restrictions: • Personal laptop computers cannot be connected to projectors in lecture rooms. • Presentations cannot be loaded directly on the computer of the lecture rooms. • Maximum size of presentations “should” not exceed 256 MB. In the Speakers’ Service Centre The SSC hostesses will be happy to welcome you in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Highly experienced and skilled technicians will assist you to transfer and to confirm your presentation(s). Once uploaded to the respective lecture room, presentations will be played locally. Rehearsal In the SSC, a demonstration computer will be representative of what is supplied in the lecture room. We strongly recommend that all speakers should familiarise themselves with the mouse control. To the attention of MAC users! If your presentation is on a Mac computer, we kindly urge you to meet with a specialised Mac technician in the SSC to either make sure that your presentation will run properly on the PCs or to anticipate a backup solution. In the lecture room In the lecture room, as soon as your presentation is launched by the technician, you can easily follow it on a monitor at the lectern and control it directly with the mouse. We strongly recommend the use of the mouse pointer, instead of a laser pointer. Chairpersons will easily follow the presentations on a dedicated monitor. Speakers’ Service Centre Opening Hours*: Saturday 2 September 08:00 - 18:00 Sunday 3 September 07:30 - 18:00 Monday 4 September 07:30 - 18:45 Tuesday 5 September 07:30 - 18:00 Wednesday 6 September 07:30 - 11:30

Industry Satellite Symposia Cooperation between clinicians, researchers and the pharmaceutical and technical industries has significantly contributed to a better understanding and management of patients with cardiovascular diseases. This is reflected in a series of symposia organised by industry as part of the congress programme. This year’s congress will also feature a series of symposia organised by non-profit organisations.

Industry Workshops Organised by industry, workshops sessions will address current practice and usage of new medical devices and equipment.

EBAC – Accredited Educational Programmes Recognition of the high quality of the programme is witnessed by endorsement from the European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology (EBAC). Accreditation can now be extended, under strict conditions, to some of the sessions organised by scientific institutions and supported by an unrestricted educational grant.

Exhibition Hall (booth C530) IHE is a cross vendor initiative supported by the ESC

IHE improves Workflow and Patient Care ● Why do I need to enter the same patient information into 5 different systems in my cath lab? ● How do I link images and data acquired with a mobile echo system to my digital archive and the hospital information system? ● Why can’t I view patient ECGs and other reports immediately and anywhere within my hospital? If you ever raised one of these questions during your daily work, come and visit the IHE booth in the exhibition hall (booth C530) and learn more about ‘Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise’ (IHE). And join us for a symposium with international experts on IHE in room “Copenhagen” on Monday, September 4, from 8:30 to 10:00 in the morning. In the IHE initiative both vendors of medical equipment and user societies like ESC, ACC, RSNA and HIMMS develop together technical solutions that improve workflow in medical care. During this convention cardiology and IHE experts guide you through a virtual hospital and demonstrate the technical solutions in a very practical environment. Come and learn how IHE can improve workflows in your department!

More information about IHE is available in the internet at www.ihe.net and www.ihe-europe.org
