Tennis Section News TENNIS TURKEY TOURNAMENT The annual Galway Lawn Tennis Club Turkey Tournament took place on Sunday December 14th. This year’s event was very generously sponsored by the Tennis Club’s Golf Society and prizes were presented by dual Tennis & Golf star Phil O Reilly. The tournament was played in unseasonably mild conditions with 44 players participating. There were 2 sections in both Men’s and Ladies’ doubles. Section 2 Ladies’ was won by Kathleen Glynn and Deirdre King with runners up prizes going to Phil O’Reilly and Gai Barry. Section 1 Ladies’ winners were Grainne Coll and Colette Noone with runners up Olivia Deeley and Marion O’Brien. The winners of the Men’s Section 2 were Mike Matthews and new member Antoine Knapeu with runners up Mike Geraghty and Brian O’Farrell. The section 1 Men’s Doubles winners were Al Waterston and Peter Floyd with runners up Francis O’Connell and Gerry Smyth. St Stephen’s Day Tennis Thanks to Brendan McNally who organised this annual event in aid of Galway Simon.14 players took part in what proved to be a very enjoyable and competitive 2 hours of tennis with all proceeds going to a very worthwhile charity. Upcoming events Mixed American Tournament Sunday 25th January at 5pm. Names to Reception. Table Quiz February 15: Details to follow. New Committee Marion O’Brien, Gerry Smyth, Pat Mc Garry, Vincent Daly, Alec Sandys, Sean Lang , Evelyn Smyth, Mark Foley and Jane Quirke. Hoping to replicate all of the good stuff from last year and with the arrival on board of new members to generate some new and exciting additional events.

Badminton Section News Happy New Year All!! We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas break and are all looking forward to joining us for another great year of badminton for 2015! We are very excited to announce that Galway Lawn Tennis Club is Badminton Ireland’s CLUB OF THE YEAR 2014!! The Badminton Section attended the prestigious awards in Dublin in December and we won not one but THREE awards!! As well as the biggest award of Club of the Year, GLTC member Micheal O’Morain was also awarded the well-deserved Connacht Volunteer of the Year Award and Galway County was awarded the County of the Year prize to top it all off! Huge congratulations to Micheal and all of the Badminton Committee as well as Galway County Badminton Association and also to Tommy Hehir and the Galway County League who were also nominated for awards! We are very proud! Well done everyone! Connacht Intermediate Mixed Doubles Championships This event took place in Sligo Tennis Club on December 13th and we were lucky enough to have three of our players make it to the finals on the day. Congratulations to Caroline Kennedy and Emma Murphy who came second in the Ladies’ Doubles category and to Garret Condon and Emma Murphy who also came second in the Mixed Doubles Category. Garret Condon also narrowly missed out on the Gold in a close Men’s Singles final. Well done guys! GLTC Turkey Competition Our annual Turkey Competition was held on December 15th and a great day of fun filled badminton was enjoyed by all! Congratulations to all our winners and special thanks to Martin Divilly Butchers for sponsoring the event. We hope you all enjoyed your turkeys!

Badminton Club Night Mondays 7:45pm – 9:45pm All standards are catered for Badminton Club Night consists of friendly games, providing each player with a variety of games. It is intended to be fun and gives you an opportunity to meet and socialise with other members. Players of any standard may take part, although a very inexperienced player may prefer some coaching and practice first. Badminton Club Night is organised by members of the Committee who place players onto courts to play doubles, ensuring they have good, balanced games.

Badminton Section News Upcoming Events Mixed Doubles County Championships: The Galway County Mixed Doubles Championships will be starting soon in GLTC. Grade D and Grade F Wednesday 14th January Starting at: 7.30pm Entry deadline: 6pm on Monday 12th January Grade H Thursday 15th January Starting at: 7.30pm Entry deadline: 6pm on Monday 12th January. Grade E and G Wednesday 28th January Starting at: 7.30pm Entry deadline: 6pm on Monday 26th January Grade C and H beg Thursday 29th January Starting at: 7.30pm Entry deadline: 6pm on Monday 26th January All matches start at 7.30pm sharp. Cost is €8 per person. Enter with a partner or let us know if you want us to find a partner for you. Enter at Reception. All mixed doubles finals will be held in GLTC on Sunday 1st of March. Good luck to all players. Connacht Senior Close: The Connacht Senior Close will be held at GLTC on Sunday January 11th and will be a great display of high quality badminton. Best of luck to all players, especially those representing GLTC on the day! All spectators and supporters are welcome. Squash Section News Squash Club Night continues on Thursdays at 7:30pm – 9pm in Courts 5 and 6 and is ideal for players wanting to try squash with coaching available on the night for beginners. Please Note: Irish Squash affiliation fees due at €25 for adults playing in national or provincial events or €15 for local Club games and €10 for juniors. The registration includes insurance when playing. Text or ring Andre Davies (Connacht Rep for Irish Squash) on 0876225687 for more information.

Body Dynamics at the Galway Lawn Tennis Club aims to interact with the members of the club. We are supplying a small membership gym, classes and our professional help. We encourage members to join the gym and ask for our advice when ever needed. The membership will cost €20 per month for the 1st 50 members so please contact us ASAP! Salthill will also act as our exercise rehabilitation centre. We will be running core strengthening programs and hope to work with local schools coaching our youth on the benefits of exercise. We will be running the HAPPY BACK program for anyone with back problems or if you want to strengthen your back. This program will also run for over 65s. Our core business will be personal training and group training so if you want fast results we are the guys to contact. We look forward to an exciting year ahead and hope to aid in your fitness goals.
