General health Vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements

Does your pet receive a sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals?

a cat needs taurine since it is virtually unable to synthesise this nutrient in its own body.

The need for vitamins and minerals among dogs and cats varies according to their age and situation in life. Puppies, kittens and pregnant or feeding bitches have different nutritional needs compared to elderly pets. The pet’s breed can also cause special needs, particularly with dogs, as bone development disorders are more common among large, fast-growing breeds than small ones. If you have a risk breed puppy or kitten, consult your vet about the need for supplements, for example during vaccination visits.

Nutrition supplements complement your pet’s diet

For well-being and steady development In addition to vitamin D, the most important factors for your dog’s bone development are calcium and phosphorus. Basic home made food usually contains a combination of grain and meat, but dogs’ ability to absorb grain phosphorus is weak. Lack of zinc causes skin and coat problems, mainly scaling, poor hair quality and rashes. Vitamin A is necessary for the well-being of eyes, skin and mucous membranes, while the lack of it may predispose your pet to inflammations. Vitamin B on the other hand is needed for the well-being of the skin, mucous membranes and the nervous system. Vitamin E functions as an antioxidant in your pet’s system. A large amount of unsaturated fatty acids in its nutrition will increase its need for this vitamin.

If your pet eats only home made food, you can give it nutrition supplements to ensure a sufficient supply of vitamins and minerals. When preparing a dosage of calcium, the calcium obtained from food should be taken into account. With respect to vitamins, you should bear in mind that vitamins A and D are fat-soluble and stored in the pet’s system. On the other hand, your pet will not benefit from an overdose of watersoluble vitamins either. Consult your vet if you suspect that your pet is suffering from a bone development disorder.

Cats also need calcium, minerals and vitamins to ensure balanced development and maintain good general health. For its body metabolism,

Digestion Stomach aches and rumbling

When your dog has diarrhoea:

When preventing intestinal disorders, you should bear in mind that, unlike humans, animals do not need to vary their diet. Once you have found a suitable diet for your pet, stick to it and avoid unnecessary changes and extra titbits. When you take your pet out, make sure it does not eat anything unsuitable.

Day 1: Water used for boiling rice, Aptus Nutrisal and Aptus Attapectin. Day 2: Rice with boiling water, Aptus Nutrisal and Aptus Attapectin. In the evening, give the dog some normal food. Day 3: Rice, minced meat, Aptus Nutrisal and Aptus Attapectin, and a bit more of the dog’s normal food. Day 4: Normal food and Aptus Aptobalance If the dog’s stool is only slightly soft, a special diet is not necessarily required. Instead, adding some Aptus Attapectin to the pet’s normal food is usually sufficient.

Suffering from diarrhoea Despite precautionary measures, your pet may still suffer from diarrhoea ever so often. If the animal’s general health is good, fluid fasting is a suitable primary care method, totalling 24 hours for a dog and 12 hours for a cat. When your pet is fasting, make sure that it drinks sufficiently, at least 0.5 dl/kg a day. It is recommended that you add a product containing sodium and potassium salts and energy to the pet’s drinking water since diarrhoea can easily upset its salt balance. If fasting does not help, you can ease the symptoms by offering your pet products that balance the intestinal system. Also ensure a sufficient fluid supply, if necessary by bottle feeding or using an oral syringe.

When your cat has diarrhoea:

- A long fast (exceeding 12 hours) is not recommended for cats since this may cause liver problems. - Feed your cat cautiously: rice, boiled chicken, cottage cheese, (tuna in water), and 1 tablet of Aptus Attapectin. - Recurring diarrhoea in a cat is often solved by removing milk products (for some cats, even sour milk products) from its diet.

If your pet develops diarrhoea often, this may be an indication of an illness which should be treated by a vet. You should also contact a vet if your pet has hypothermia, fever, bloody stools, pain or cramps or if the disorder continues over three days. In the case of a puppy or an elderly dog with a chronic illness, do not wait three days but monitor the situation on a daily basis and consult a vet (for instance by phone).

10

Use Nutrisal powder is used to reduce the loss of fluids and electrolytes in a dog or a cat in connection with intestinal problems. If a dog or cat has diarrhoea, it will lose a great deal of its body fluids and be in danger of dehydrating. In addition to water, the pet needs electrolytes, which Nutrisal provides in a suitable amount. In the case of diarrhoea, we also recommend that you give your pet Aptus Attapectin tablets, which bind intestinal fermentation products. After a very stressful period or during a car trip in hot weather, you can treat your pet for fluid loss by giving it Nutrisal electrolyte drink.

The need for fluids will increase if the animal is vomiting violently or has violent diarrhoea. Skin and coat A shiny coat indicates health There may be several reasons for skin and coat problems in animals, most of which you need not be concerned about. However, sometimes a change in your pet’s coat can indicate an illness, so it is recommended that you keep an eye your pet’s appearance.

Daily care and nutrition Brushing and removing tangles form part of daily coat care. Even recurrent washing is not bad for your pet’s fur if you use high-quality shampoos. A dirty coat on the other hand is a risk to the animal’s general well-being. Nutrition has a fundamental effect on skin and coat condition. In particular, pets eating dry food may lack important polyunsaturated fatty acids since their bodies cannot synthesise a sufficient amount of these from the food. Fatty acids play an important role in the prevention and treatment of numerous diseases while the lack of these may cause skin peeling, a dull-looking coat and heavy hair loss. Biotine affects skin, coat and nail well-being and is important for your pet’s metabolism. The need for biotine increases during stressful periods and when there are certain renal and intestinal diseases. Methionine functions together with biotine and intensifies its effect.

Mouth hygiene Why does my pet’s breath smell bad? Your pet’s breath may smell bad for a variety of reasons, including mouth infections, stool eating, fish food, diabetes or uraemia. However, one of the most common causes of foul-smelling breath is poor dental hygiene. The bad smell caused by this is not only a cosmetic problem but often an indication of plaque build-up on the pet’s teeth which might further develop into tartar. Tartar causes similar problems in both animals and humans: gum inflammation and even tooth loss. Thus, oral and dental health plays an important role in your pet’s general health.

Give your pet’s teeth something to chew on Healthy mucous membranes and gums are pink. Healthy teeth are white, with no tartar or yellow plaque. Nutrition plays an important role in animal oral care. Food should not only have the right nutritional content but should also provide enough work for the teeth since chewing prevents tartar build-up. If your dog’s or cat’s teeth do not get a sufficient amount of mechanical work, you must take care of them by brushing them. You can brush your dog’s or cat’s teeth, but human toothpaste must not be used due to the fluoride it contains. Aptus oral hygiene gels and chews help reduce plaque build up and prevent foul-smelling breath. Give some gel to your pet every day, either directly to its mouth or by measuring it into its bowl where it can be licked from. You can brush the cat’s or dog’s teeth before giving the gel. Oral hygiene chews can be used as daily titbits.
