The Custer Gallatin National Forest is one of five national forests comprising this amazing place.  Some tips to enjoying and staying safe during your stay include: • Prior to heading on an adventure, make sure you have bear spray and it’s readily accessible. • Know and understand food storage regulations for the Custer Gallatin National Forest and Yellowstone National Park.  • Hike during daylight hours. • Make lots of noise – bears will avoid people and leave an area when they know people are present. Use extra caution when visibility or hearing is limited. • Hike in a group. Recommended at least four people per group in Grizzly country. • Watch for bear signs such as fresh tracks, scat, torn apart logs and partially consumed or buried animal carcasses. • Never approach a bear. If a bear approaches you, slowly back away and maintain a safe distance.

EXPO DETAILS The expo will be held in the field on the west end of town across from Iris St (the same location as the start and finish of the race). The expo will be small, but we will have some fun events like Smokey the Bear, a bear spray demonstration, and more! You can pick up your bib and gear, but plan to stay and check out our awesome vendors! Half Marathon bibs will be available until 7:00 PM (you can also get your bib race morning at the start line). You can pick up your 5K bib at the expo until 6:45 PM as the 5K race starts at 7 PM.

THE MERIDIAN LINE provides us with

our race shirts and the beautiful artwork. We’ll also have their merchandise for sale at our merch store at the expo and the finish line. In the words of the artist and captain of The Meridian Line Jeremy Collins, “I wanted to build something with SOUL. Meridian Line was born to share the journey with others... I wanted to celebrate those of us who choose challenge rather than convenience, and a weekend in the dirt rather than the condo... my soul is always on the move. Join me.”

When you pick up your packet at the expo this year, we’re encouraging you to Bring Your Own Bag! To keep in line with our tradition of waste elimination and conservation of the land, we’re going completely bag-less at the expo this year! If you would like to purchase a reusable, foldable bag, we’ll have them available at our merchandise store.

VACATION RACES CAMPGROUND This year we’re celebrating the National Parks on a whole new level with our outdoor campground! The expo will be outdoors and we’ll have a campground theme throughout. Come pick up your race packet, shop at our merchandise store, check out our vendors, and treat yourself to a s’more around the campfire! Our outdoor vendors will be demonstrating gear and providing all the information you need to start your adventure. It’s going to be a party!

This year is the National Park Service Centennial. Here is to another 100 years for the NPS. Come ready to celebrate!

RACE INFORMATION

COURSE

This is a trail run. There are a couple sections that get a little technical and could be a bit muddy because of the snow melt. If you have never run off-road before, this course might be challenging for you. If you prefer to run off-road in trail shoes, you might consider wearing them for this course, though you will also be fine in regular shoes. This course is remote, but beautiful. Pay close attention to the aid station guide. Because of the remote nature of this part of the course there will be WATER ONLY at mile 9 - no bathrooms. There will be limited bathrooms at mile 7.

ELEVATION

The overall elevation change on the course is marginal, but there is a challenging hill between mile 5 and 7. The total race gain is 361 ft. with max elevation 6995 ft.

TIMING

All masters and overall awards will be based on gun time. If you plan to compete for these top spots you will need to line up at the front of the line. All age divisions and team awards will be based on chip time. If you are standing towards the back, it may be a few minutes before you cross the start line. Your time does not officially start until you cross the starting line (unless you are competing for an overall top finisher spot), so please be courteous to others as we start the race. If you will be walking, please start towards the back to avoid congestion at the start.

PACERS

Pacers will line up at the start line around 6:30 am. There will be a pacer pacing the race in 10 minute intervals starting at a 1h40m pace up to 2h30m. We will also have a 2h45m, 3h, and 3h30m pacer. Please seat yourself near the time you expect to finish.

JUNE 11, 2016

GEAR CHECK

You will be given a Gear Check bag at the starting line if you wish. It will be a white garbage bag that you can fill with anything you want transported to the finish line. There will be permanent markers you can use to write your name and bib number. Avoid putting valuables in your bag. *gear check bags will be available at the finish line as soon as the first person finishes.

CLOTHING ON COURSE

We will have a clothing bin to dump items in at mile 3. Anything else found along the course will be treated as trash. *clothing dropped off at mile 3 won’t be picked up until the last runner has passed mile 3 - so you may have to wait for your clothing.

NO LITTERING AID STATIONS

We will have aid stations near miles 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12. All aid stations will have bath-rooms, water + Nuun, and Honey Stinger energy gels except mile 9. Mile 11 will also have oranges and bananas. There will be basic first aid needs at each aid station, but the EMT will be at Mile 7. *It is difficult for the race staff to access the aid stations at mile 7 and 9 during the race so water will be limited. Therefore, if you are planning to refill a reservoir or your hand helds and bottles, please do so at the mile 5 aid staion before you cross the bridge.

TIME LIMIT

All runners will have 4 hours to finish the race. That is a 18.5 minute mile plenty of time for walkers! If at anytime we deem it unsafe and need to pull a runner off the course we would hope for understanding and immediate cooperation. Failure to comply will result in being banned from future events.

WAVE START

A wave start will help us organize the race and prevent overcrowding on the course. When you line up to start the race, use the colored shield on your bib and signs at the start to determine where to stand (grouping based on expected finish time runner indicated when registering for the race). Wave 1: 1:30-1:55 Wave 2: 2:00 Wave 3B: 2:05-2:15 Wave 3B: 2:05-2:15 Wave 4A: 2:20-2:30 Wave 4B: 2:20-2:30 Wave 5: 2:35-3:00 4

Wave 6A: 3:00+ Wave 6B: 3:00+

RECOVERY FOOD BOX

At the finish line we will have a Recovery Box (full of recovery snacks), bananas, and chocolate milk, as well as water and Nuun hydration. Please help yourself to one box, chocolate milk, and banana per runner. In an attempt to reduce waste, we will provide a place to trade/leave any unwanted snack items.

STROLLERS

Strollers are welcome on our course, but please make sure you’re comfortable using your stroller on the trail, which at places is rough. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the course and be courteous to other runners!

NO DOGS

They are a liability that our insurance does not cover. However they are welcome to greet you at the finish line with the rest of your loved ones!

PARKING

We will have plenty of parking to accommodate all of our runners. All the hotels are a short walk from the startline if you are staying in town and feel like walking. Parking will be at the old airport in West Yellowstone by the start line. We will have a raffle in the morning and plenty of hot chocolate/coffee.

SPECTATOR INFO

Because the course is mostly off the main road, it isn’t a very spectator friendly course. Spectators are welcome at the starting line, and the finish line. Another good place to cheer on your runner would be at mile 3. Once you cheer on your runner at the start and they are running the course, the Mile 3 aid station is just a short walk from the start line. Spectators are encouraged to be at the finish line to cheer on all our runners. We want you to be there to cheer on your runner, but please recognize that the runner area is for runners only! Please do not enter the runner area or partake of runner’s food and recovery supplies. There are no vehicles allowed on the course. The only vehicle allowed on the course will be for a medical emergency. Deciding you don’t want to run anymore is not an emergency.

RACE DAY CHECKLIST

CUP-FREE RACING

PRE-RACE DAY

Having our races so close to the National Parks, unnecessary waste and trash are something we are strongly against. We are dedicated to maintaining a clean race and preserving the beauty of the area we run in. There is nothing that will ruin a view more than seeing a piece a trash in plain view from a breathtaking landscape.

back of your bib. You don’t have to do anything. The bib chip looks like a sticker on the back of your bib NO CHIP = NO TIME!

AFTER THE RACE

• The bib chip is disposable and

can be thrown away or left on your bib for you to cherish always. Stick around until 9:45am for our awards ceremony!

One of the most important things in a half marathon is ensuring that aid stations are plentiful and efficient. Hydration will make or break a race. What we do is offer a Hydrapouch for every runner that indicated they wanted one as part of their registration. Other options include running with a water bottle, fuel belt, camelbak or other hydration backpack, etc. Every runner prefers something different. Just make sure you have some way to stay hydrated! Although we don’t have cups on the course, we have plenty of aid stations with water and Nuun! At all aid stations we will have BLUE COOLERS WITH

WATER and RED COOLERS WITH NUUN (ELECTROLYTE DRINK). Both will have the same speed valves attached. So at each aid station you will have your choice of water or Nuun. At some places, the water will be hooked up to a system like the one pictured on above. Each of these pipes will provide water from the several speed valves we have attached. Feel free to practice at the expo!

POST-RACE INFO The awards ceremony will take place at the stage at the finish line and will begin at 9:45 AM. If you checked gear at the start of the race, you will be able to pick it up just past the finish line in the runner area. RACE RESULTS

Results will be available later the morning of the race. We will post them on Facebook and also send them in a post-race email a day or two after the race. They will also be available on our website. MEDALS

All runners will receive a finisher medal. Place medals will be given to the top 5 male and female runners overall as well as the Masters 40+ group. Additionally, the top 5 in each age group and the top 3 teams will also receive a place medal.

• •

The aid station will have a few cups in case of an emergency, do not plan on using them. Also, under no circumstances should you put your head under the valve to get a drink. Not only does this waste water, it is pretty inconsiderate of other runners. There will be water at the finish line, but no cups. Please use your Hydrapouch or water bottle to fill up at the finish line.

us at [email protected] There will be gear check at the start line. There will be a bin to dump extra clothing at mile 3. Anything found littered on the course elsewhere will be considered trash and either thrown away or donated.

MEDICAL TENT

The medical tent at the finish line is for athletes only; family members are not allowed. Overcrowding in the medical tent prevents medical staff from doing their job. For information on an athlete receiving medical attention please wait outside the tent for updates. POST-RACE SURVEY

Within a week of race day we will be sending out a postrace survey. We would really appreciate it if you took the 5-10 minutes to complete the survey for us. The survey provides us with information that allows us to better work with the local community and gain more support for future races, but more importantly it provides us with If you qualify for a place medal but are not present at valuable insight into what we are doing well and what the awards ceremony to receive it we will happily ship it to you. Go to our website and request your medal and we need to improve. We love our runners and couldn’t improve our race series without your feedback. Please pay the cost of shipping (about $8). watch for the email. LOST & FOUND • There is no official lost & found. If we find lost items we will hold onto them and you can contact 7

CUSTER GALLATIN NATIONAL FOREST Take a look at some of tips for staying safe in Bear Country and a few recommendations for hiking and biking in the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Camping in Bear Country • Always keep a clean camp and follow food storage regulations. • Select a campsite way from animal trails, thick brush and bear food sources such as berry patches and fish spawning streams. • Store all food, garbage and other scented items such as toothpaste, chapstick, insect repellant in hard-sided vehicle, bear resistant containers or by hanging at least 10 feet of the ground and four feet out from a tree. • Do not leave food, beverages or coolers unattended. In the backcountry set up your sleeping area 300 feet or more from your food storage and cooking/eating areas. • Keep sleeping bags and personal gear free of odors. • Never sleep in the same clothes you wore while cooking.

Hiking • Lava Lake (moderate): 6 miles roundtrip, elevation gain 1300 feet. High mountain lake located in Lee Metcalf Wilderness. • Refuge Point Overlook (easy): 2 miles roundtrip. From the overlook of Quake Lake, watch for eagles and moose. Across the Madison River, look for the remnants of Ghost Village, composed of a few of the different cabins dislodged by the 1959 Hebgen Lake Earthquake. • Mount Hebgen (strenuous): 6 miles roundtrip, elevation gain 2,200 feet. On a clear day, views of the Tetons. • Cinnamon Mountain (strenuous): Distance 8 miles round trip, elevation gain 2700 feet. From the fire lookout at the top of Cinnamon Mountain, you can catch 360 views.

south end of Iris Street) to FS road 1756. Loops back to 1700. Approx. 10 miles. • Boundary Trail (easy): Paralleling Yellowstone National Park’s boundary for 5 miles, this flat trail is a good one for early season biking. Access points from Baker’s Hole Campground, the truck pullout off of Hwy 191, and the end of Boundary Street. • Basin Station (easy to strenuous): park at the FS access near Basin Station cabin off Denny Creek road. Conditions permitting, link up with FS Road 1735 to access the Lionshead Loop. •Rendezvous Trails (easy to moderate): Access the trailhead from Obsidian Ave. in town. Enjoy 21 miles of gently rolling trails through lodgepole forests and open meadows.

Biking The Hebgen Basin has a variety of historic logging roads that make great early season mountain bike trails. Check with the Hebgen Lake Ranger District office for current biking conditions. Avoid trails and single track that are extremely wet and muddy, as resource damage easily occurs in spring conditions. • South Plateau (moderate): FS Road 1700 (at the 9

DOUBLE AND TRIPLE RACES

JUNE 11, 2016

DOUBLE AND TRIPLE RACE INFO

OBSERVATION POINT

OBSERVATION POINT

OBSERVATION POINT

What are these? When we added the Grand Teton Half Marathon AND the Yellowstone 5K to our annual schedule, we saw a unique opportunity. We often dream of escaping responsibilities and disappearing into the wilderness for a time. Well, by having the Grand Teton Half and the Yellowstone Half on back to back weekends, these multi-race events provide that justification you were looking for to

escape into nature for a little while. The Doubles and Triple listed below aren’t just for runners who complete both races. They are for those who registered separately for the event. What is included? Runners who complete a double will receive a special shirt and medal (in addition to the finisher medal for

the separate races). **Runners could choose to opt out of either the race shirt or the extra swag item**

MEDALS AND SWAG CANNOT BE BOUGHT. THEY MUST BE EARNED.

GRIZZLY DOUBLE

The Grizzly Double is a back to back weekend half marathon race. Runners who complete The Grizzly Double will participate in the Grand Teton Half on June 4, then (hopefully) spend the week exploring Jenny Lake, hiking Table Mountain, walking around Grand Prismatic, meditating at Artist Point,

climbing Mt. Washburn and getting lost in the beauty of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park. Then on June 13 they will finish the Yellowstone Half Marathon. Two half marathons, two Saturdays, and one week of exploring in one of the most incredible places in the United States.

BISON DOUBLE

The Bison Double is for runners looking to run two distances in one weekend! Runners will participate in a little shake out run on Friday night (June 10) and then compete in the Yellowstone Half Marathon the next morning (June 11). In their downtime, they’ll go explore that many wonders that Yellowstone

National Park has to offer!

This year we’ve added something extra hardcore! Last year you told us you really wanted an event for all three races. We initially thought that would be too intesnse, but for you champions out there we have the Caldera Triple! Those who signed up will run the Grand Teton Half Marathon on June 4, the Yellowstone

5K on June 10, and the Yellowstone Half Marathon on June 11. In between, they’ll get to hike and explore both parks, making this one of the most hardcore vacations we can imagine!

Combination: Grand Teton Half & Yellowstone Half Total Mileage: 26.2 Packet Pickup: Teton Expo

Combination: Yellowstone 5K & Yellowstone Half Total Mileage: 16.2 Packet Pickup: Yellowstone Expo

CALDERA TRIPLE

Combination: Grand Teton Half, Yellowstone 5K & Yellowstone Half Total Mileage: 29.3 Packet Pickup: Teton Expo

PACKET PICKUP, SWAG, AND MEDALS PACKET PICKUP - We’ll have Double and Triple race packets at their

own pickup station at the expo. We’ll have signage marking the table where you’ll check in and pickup your bibs and race shirts. The bibs and shirts* will be pre-packaged in a box for you to grab. *Same shirt exchange policy applies to runners who would like a different size (all left over shirts will be at the finish line of the race for runners to try and exchange).

SWAG - Runners that indicated they would like the special swag item (in addition to regular race swag) were able to choose from a t-shirt, a tank-top, or a hat. These designs will not change year-after-year, so you still have a 10

chance to collect them all! You’ll pick up this item at the race expo. Once you’ve picked up your packet, you’ll be directed to the swag table, where your item will be waiting for you!

MEDALS - Once you’ve completed your final race at the Yellowstone Half Marathon, you’ll get to collect your special double or triple finisher medal! Those medals will be waiting for you just outside the runner recovery area. Once you’re ready, make your way over to that table (which will be clearly marked) with your bib. A volunteer will then hand you the correct double or triple medal and the race portion of your vacation is officially complete!

Accessibility

A Yellowstone National Park fishing permit is required. State permits are not valid in the park and state regulations do not apply. Get trail maps and permits, required for backcountry camping, at most ranger stations. Do not use this map for backcountry hiking. There are almost 1,000 miles of trails.

You are responsible for knowing and following federal and state (WY, MT, ID) laws that govern firearms and weapons within the park. Find information at www.nps.gov/yell. We strive to make facilities, services, and programs accessible to all. Service animals are allowed but require a permit in the backcountry. Find information at visitor centers and on our website.

CLUB HIKES

EXAMPLE PHOTO

To encourage our runners to get out and enjoy the park, we have 2 club hikes and a Trifecta challenge. Our club hikes are a salute to the hardcore among us. All runners that complete a hike within 72 hours of the end of the race will receive 50% OFF next year’s race entry, and completing the Trifecta grants 20% OFF next year’s entry. Any runner who sends us a picture of him or herself at these destinations will officially join the club! Must be sent within 72 hours of the race. Photo must include: • A clear view of your happy face • Your bib with bib number clearly visible • Your shiny new finisher medal in view • A clear backgrond that shows you actually completed the hike Following the 2016 Yellowstone Half Marathon, we will post a link to the website where runners can send us their photos and names. Good luck!

After the race there will be a submission form online where you can upload your photo(s) and send them to us. We have a hard cutoff of 72 hours! If you don’t get it to us before Tuesday at 11 AM (MST) then we will only give you a virtual hi-five. This picture is from Osprey Falls and is an example of what yours should look like (for both the Clubs AND the Trifecta).

Mt. Washburn is located in the northeast section of the park. The views from the lookout are some of the best in all the park. After leaving the parking lot at Dunraven Pass you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Hayden Valley, and the Grand Tetons farther to the south. The trail

has several switchbacks, offering different and unique views. The trail is likely to have some spots covered in snow (around mile 2.5 is where the most snow-pack is). It should still be hikeable, but you should check conditions before attempting this hike. Snow-pack might make it very difficult.

The hike to Osprey Falls starts 5 miles south of Mammoth on the Old Bunsen Peak Road Trail and is 8 miles round trip. The trail follows the old roadbed for 2.5 miles through grassland and burnt forest. The trail veers off the old road and follows the rim of Sheepeater Canyon before descending in a series of switchbacks

to the bottom. The switchbacks are VERY thin, sometimes less than a foot wide. The trail ends about 30 feet from the falls, but previous hikers say you can hike to the base if you’re cautious. The altitude is high and the climate is dry. Bring lots of water. We also recommend starting earlier in the day.

CLUBS & TRIFECTA INFORMATION

THE YELLOWSTONE TRIFECTA

There are 3 different activities- all which need to be done to officially complete the Trifecta. The same rules as the Club Hikes apply: take your picture at each of the 3 with your bib and finisher medal and send them to

1) OLD FAITHFUL

Watch Old Faithful Erupt! Old Faithful is the most famous and celebrated geyser in the world. The 1870 Washburn Expedition camped near Old Faithful and discovered the geyser had frequent and regular eruptions over 100 feet. They dubbed the geyser Old Faithful. It erupts once approximately every 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the duration of the previous eruption. Schedules for predicted eruptions are posted in the NPS buildings near Old Faithful.

JUNE 11, 2016

us 72 hours after finishing the race. The Trifecta is meant to be challenging, but less strenuous. These are iconic activities inside the park that should be experienced, and are doable with children. The 3 activities that make up the Trifecta are: OLD FAITHFUL, SEE A BISON, AND ARTIST POINT.

2) SEE A BISON

You can’t leave Yellowstone without seeing bison! Yellowstone is the only place in the U.S. where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. While you might be able to find bison in any area of Yellowstone, check out Lamar Valley for a variety of wildlife viewing! Lamar Valley is a wide, expansive valley in sort of a remote north-eastern corner of the park. Take your picture with a bison... but do not approach the animals!

3) ARTIST POINT

Artist Point is just a short hike off of south rim drive, and offers very popular and iconic views of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Lower Falls.

*Please take these hikes seriously, and act responsibly. It is not intended to be accessible to everyone. Also, bring more water than you think you need. In June, there may still be snow packed on the trail. We can’t really anticipate what the weather will be like at that time of year, but are hoping it will be clear. Depending on the weather you may want to bring yak tracks or equivalent. Check the NPS website to help plan your hike and check with park rangers to get up to date trail conditions. Also remember these parks belong to all of us. Take time to plan your hike and be sure not to disrupt the environnment. Leave nothing but footprints, and be careful!

PARK INFORMATION All visitors are required to purchase a pass in order to enter Yellowstone National Park. Park shuttles will be running. Seniors over 62 can purchase a lifetime pass for just $10. Active members of the U.S. Military are eligible for a free pass as well as U.S. citizens with permanent disabilities. If you already own a National Park Annual Pass, you’re good to go! Otherwise you

can purchase one at the park entrance, or just a single park pass. Yellowstone is a big park. It would be difficult to get around without a car, but the best things are seen on foot. Visit www.nps.gov/yell for more information and to help plan your visit.

JUNE 11, 2016 We are excited to announce the Virtual Running Club! We have been hosting virtual races since 2013 and now have 24 different races throughout the year. From Martin Luther King, Jr Day to Earth Day to Summer Solstice, virtual races are a great way to establish goals throughout the year and celebrate days that are important to you without the logistical hassles of race day! Plus, it’s a cost effective way to fill out your medal rack. Vacation Races is the sponsor for the virtual races held on the National Park Fee Free Days (National Park Week, Earth Day, NPS Birthday, etc). We are also proud to be hosting the first annual Surgeon Generals Virtual 5K Run, Walk, Roll in May. As we develop the Virtual Running Club over the next year you will be able to earn discounts to virtual and traditional races as well as some swag from our sponsors. Look for our booth at the expo to learn more! What is a virtual race? - A virtual race is a low cost running event where the location of the race is chosen by the individual participant rather than the event company. You still get a shirt and finisher medal shipped to you, but on race day you track your own time and you select where you run. Through pictures on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter we run together virtually.
