Welcome

to Scotland’s Golf Coast

Just a half-hour drive East of Edinburgh, East Lothian is a jewel in Scotland’s crown as the Home of Golf. With 22 must-play golf courses stretching through 30 miles of stunning coastline, golden beaches and rolling countryside, this is a golfing paradise. Known as the sunniest and driest part of Scotland, it is open for business throughout the year, with a warm welcome awaiting every visitor.

This is only part of the long history of Scotland’s Golf Coast, which continues to improve and only last year added the world’s first Nike Performance Fitting Centre at Archerfield Links. “ East Lothian has an abundance of great courses that have been designed by some of the greatest architects in golf. I always look forward to visiting Scotland’s Golf Coast for the world class golf and service. With the amplitude of quality golf on offer you are simply spoilt for choice.” Paul Lawrie MBE

The Perfect Golf Destination where the past and present meet to create golfing excellence East Lothian provides an inspirational setting for golf, and with 22 courses it may well be the highest concentration of links golf courses in the world. Eight of these courses featured in National Club Golfer’s Top 100 Links in the UK and Ireland (more than any other region in Britain), with Muirfield topping Golf Monthly’s list of Top 100 Golf Courses in the UK and Ireland. This incredible corner of the Home of Golf features a depth, variety and quality of golf courses, which can compete with any golf destination in the world.

It all begins in 1672 at one of the world’s oldest golf courses, Musselburgh Links, where Mary Queen of Scots once played. You will recognise familiar names such as Gullane and North Berwick Golf Club, hosts of the 2015 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and 2015 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Pre-Qualifier respectively; along with the worldfamous home of the 2013 Open Championship, Muirfield, which Jack Nicklaus described as ‘the best course in Britain’. Stunning coastal vistas are offered in abundance with no better an example than that of the seventh tee of Gullane No. 1, where you will find a 360-degree panorama described as ‘the best view in golf’. Beautiful coastal surroundings

also feature when playing Longniddry, Kilspindie, Luffness New, Whitekirk and The Glen, but each course presents a very different experience and challenge. This rich wealth of historic courses is complemented by a collection of recent additions. Craigielaw, which opened in 2001, boasts more spectacular sea views and has already hosted many prestigious events. Located within Archerfield Estate are East Lothian’s newest gems: Archerfield Links, home of the world’s first Nike Performance Fitting Centre and host to the 2015 Scottish Seniors Open; and The Renaissance Club, which offers a world-class haven.

The journey along the coast gloriously concludes at Dunbar Golf Club, where three giants of the game, Morris, Baird and Sayers created a course, blessed with reputation for abundant sunshine and which lives long in the memory of all who play it. However, golf in the area is not confined to the coast, with some fantastic inland courses, including Musselburgh Golf Club, Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, Haddington, Gifford and Castle Park all set amongst peaceful, picturesque Scottish countryside. With such a wealth of golfing experiences available and all courses an essential part of any golfer’s repertoire, the only option is to return again and again to play them all. 3

Gifford Golf Club Gents par 71 6129 yards Ladies par 73 5702 yards

This is a beautiful 9-hole course set in gently undulating parkland on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Gifford. With the Lammermuir Hills as a scenic backdrop and bounded by mature woods and farmlands, the course is maintained to the highest standards. It has a well-deserved reputation for its first-class greens, which are a challenge for even the best of golfers.

The course was laid out in 1904 and it has benefitted from the fact that during the first 100 years the club had only four head green keepers, indicative of their love for the course, continuity of maintenance and continued evolution. Subtle improvements are carried out annually and this can be seen in the recently renovated tees and bunkers throughout the course.

Golf has been played over the links at Gullane for more than 350 years. Today, it is one of Scotland’s most prestigious member clubs, mixing the finest tradition with some of the most admired natural links land in the world.

Gullane No.1 (1884) has a long history of hosting national and international championship golf events. Carved into the ancient links turf, pot bunkers, wispy grasses and smooth-running greens offer a unique challenge for the serious golfer. Add to that

the fabulous views and you have one of the world’s most cherished golfing experiences. In 2013 it was voted in 21st place in the Top 100 Courses in Scotland by Today’s Golfer and the spectacular par five 3rd was recognised as one of the best holes in the world by Golf Magazine (USA). With every hole having its own distinct character, Gullane No.1 is both memorable, enjoyable, and undoubtedly one of Scotland’s finest links courses.

Gullane No.2 Gullane No.2 (1898) was laid out by the legendary Willie Park Jr.  Running alongside No.1 for the first seven holes, the course sweeps down to a nature reserve next to Aberlady Bay before turning back towards home and the visitors’ clubhouse. The beauty of the coastline and the challenge of the layout create an unforgettable round that epitomises links

golf in Scotland. Whilst shorter than its older sibling it provides an equally stern test, with challenge and charm in equal doses. Gullane No.3 Gullane No.3 was also designed by Willie Park Jr in 1910. It may be the shortest of the three courses, but it provides a wonderful test based on shot-making skills rather than power.

Gullane Golf Club, West Links Road, Gullane EH31 2BB

Of all the courses at Gullane, No.3 enjoys some of the best views across Aberlady Bay to Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth beyond. Spectacular and challenging, No.3 is a course that demands a deft touch and a cool head. This is no soft option, despite a lack of yards the course still present the classic Gullane challenge of strategic course management, true running greens and numerous bunkers to be avoided.

Retaining a wonderful charm and offering a great warmth of welcome, Kilspindie is a traditional Scottish seaside links designed by Ross and Sayers with later additions by Willie Park.

Kilspindie is a favourite of any golfer who has played the course: of medium length but with quick, deceptive greens; and welldefined fairways; the course is nonetheless a very good test of golf and a challenge to all, whatever your ability. The Facts Musselburgh Old Course is one of the oldest golf courses in the world, with evidence suggesting that Mary Queen of Scots played at the course as far back as 1567! The area has a vast history, with four of the courses featuring in the 18 oldest courses in the world: Musselburgh Old Course, Gullane No. 1, North Berwick West Links and Dunbar. Scotland’s Golf Coast has the highest concentration of links courses found anywhere in the world. The Ryder Cup was first played in Scotland in 1973, at Muirfield on Scotland’s Golf Coast. The victorious American Team featured the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. The Old Club Cup, the oldest continuously played golf trophy, dating from 1774, is still competed for at Royal Musselburgh Golf Club. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, now based at Muirfield, dates from 1744, making it the second oldest golf club in the world. All golf holes across the world measure 4 ½ inches and have been since 1891. This is because Royal Musselburgh Golf Club had invented, in 1829, the first known holecutter. Nobody knows why this size was chosen, but one can only imagine how much easier golf would have been had the cutter measured 10 inches! Scotland’s Golf Coast is also hugely important for ladies golf. The first known ladies competition was played at Royal Musselburgh on New Year’s Day 1811. This year Haddington Golf Club celebrates its 150th anniversary!

Established in 1837 by local farmers John and George Rate, the distillery became the Glenkinchie Distillery Co. in 1890 and in 1914, it became one of five Lowland distilleries that formed the Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd.

The distillery’s visitor centre offers a range of tours, all of which end in a tasting, where there is guaranteed to be a flavour to suit every palate. The fascinating exhibition includes a twenty-foot model of a distillery that was displayed in the Palace of Industry at the British Empire Exhibition of 1923-25, and the still house boasts the largest copper pot in Scotland.
