The C/W MARS Digital Collection Apple iPad & iPhone Instructions for Downloading eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines & Streaming Video You can use the C/W MARS Digital Collection http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org to borrow and enjoy eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and streaming video on your Apple device (iPhone & iPad). The C/W MARS Digital Collection uses the browser based eBook reader OverDrive Read, streams eAudiobooks with OverDrive Listen and uses three mobile apps: the OverDrive app, Nook app and the Kindle app. Instructions for all five options are included.

1. Sign in with your Library Card Number before you browse to search and see all titles available to you. 2. You may browse the collection by Featured Collection, or by item type: eBook Fiction, eBook Nonfiction, Audiobook Fiction, Audiobook Nonfiction or Video Genres. 3. To perform a quick search, enter your search term(s) in the search bar. If you know exactly what you are searching for, try putting it in quotes. For example, searching for "John Grisham" would turn up results containing that exact name. This works with titles, authors, and other keywords. 4. To search by multiple criteria, perform an Advanced Search. Using the Advanced Search feature allows you to filter results by subject, format, availability, and more, including award winning books. Fill in as much information as you want. Each field is optional, and some are not always used by individual publishers. 2 C/W MARS Digital Collection

2 Once you have performed a search you will be brought to a search results page. On the search results page, you can: 1. Customize your results view (cover or list). 2. Search within your results using the "Search within results" bar. 3. Use the "Show me..." filter to display only titles with copies available for checkout. 4. Sort your results by relevancy, title, author, and more using the "Sort By" drop-down menu. 5. Filter your results by format, subject, publisher, and more using the expandable filters.

Checking Out 1. When you find an item you want, just tap or scroll over the book cover. A Borrow button will appear if the item is currently available. Tap or click on Borrow to check out the item.

2. Tap on “More” to get more information, such as format type and a description. 3. If the item is unavailable a Place a Hold button will appear.

4. Tap or click on Place a Hold. If prompted, sign in with your Library Card. 5. Enter your email address, then select Place a Hold. If you want the title to be automatically borrowed for you as soon as it is available, make sure that "Automatically borrow this title when it becomes available" is selected.

Checkouts Once you have tapped on Borrow to check out the item, the Go to Checkouts button appears. Tap Go to Checkouts. You may also access your Checkouts anytime by tapping or clicking the Account icon on the digital collection website: http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org. Your library Checkouts will then open. Titles you have checked out are available here until they expire.

1. From your Holds page, you can also turn on/off automatic hold borrowing, edit your email address for hold notifications, suspend a hold, or remove a hold. 2. Use the Lists page to view your wish list, rated titles, view recommended titles and your periodical history. 3. Use the Settings page to adjust lending periods defaults, maturity level(s), cover images & contrast levels.

If the option is available, you may read an eBook via OverDrive Read, stream an eAudiobook via OverDrive Listen or stream eVideo directly in your browser. OverDrive App eBooks, eAudiobooks & eVideos

You can use OverDrive’s app to borrow and enjoy eBooks, eAudiobooks, and streaming video from the Harvard Public Library through our library network C/W MARS on your Apple device (iPad and iPhone).

Install and Set Up the Free OverDrive App 1. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. Search for “OverDrive” and tap GET. 2. Open the app. OverDrive will prompt you to sign in or sign up for an OverDrive account. If you already have an OverDrive account sign in. If you do not have an OverDrive account tap Sign up. 3. After you have signed in, you will need to Add a Library. Tap on the Menu Icon (three horizontal lines). Then tap on + Add a Library. 4. Type Harvard into the search box and tap on SEARCH. 5. Tap on Harvard Public Library. 6. Tap on the star next to C/W MARS (under Library Systems). The star will turn gold and C/W MARS will be added to your libraries.

Find the eBook, eAudiobook or eVideo You Want 1. Tap on the Menu icon (three horizontal lines). 2. Then, tap on C/W MARS. You will be taken to the C/W MARS Digital Collection. 3. Sign in with your Library Card Number before you browse to search and see all titles available to you. 4. Check Remember my login information on this device, if you want the app to remember your library card number. 5. Tap in the search box to search by author or title. When you get a list of search results, on the left side of the app you can filter your search by Available Now, Format and more. When you find an item you want, just tap on the book cover. A Borrow button will appear if the item is currently available. (It will otherwise say Place a hold.) Tap on “More” to get more information.

Checkout and Download (or Place a Hold) 1. When an item is available, it will say Borrow. (It will otherwise say Place a Hold.) Tap on Borrow, then tap Go to Checkouts. 2. Download or stream the item: 7 C/W MARS Digital Collection

For eBooks: a. Tap on Download (Select one format) drop down to download the eBook to your device. Then, select EPUB eBook, and then Confirm & Download. To read your book, tap on the Menu Icon (three horizontal lines on the upper left) and tap on Bookshelf. Note: The OverDrive App only reads the Adobe EPUB & PDF formats. Do not select the Kindle book option. It will not work in the OverDrive App. If you prefer the Kindle App select Kindle Book (U.S. only) to complete checkout on Amazon’s website and send the book to your Kindle App. (Kindle App instructions follow in this packet). For eAudiobooks: b. Tap on Add to app (MP3 Audiobook) to download directly to the OverDrive app. To listen to your audiobook, tap on the Menu Icon (three horizontal lines on the upper left) and tap on Bookshelf. For Videos: c. Tap on Add to app (Streaming Video) To watch your video, tap the Menu Icon (three horizontal lines on the upper left) and tap on Bookshelf. Did your eBook not display after download?  If the eBook does not display after pressing the download button or your device freezes, try powering off your device and powering back on. What happens when a title expires?  All eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming videos that you borrow from the C/W MARS Digital Collection expire at the end of their lending periods and will not accrue late fees. At the end of its lending period, a borrowed title will automatically disappear from your library account and a message will pop up in the app instructing you to delete the expired title. Can I renew a book?  The Renew option becomes available three days before a title is set to expire and appears next to the title on your Checkouts under your library Account. If the title already has holds, you can not renew it, but you can request it again. Can I return an eBook early?

OverDrive Read With OverDrive Read, you can borrow eBooks and read them right in your Safari browser with a single click—no software or downloads are required. What is OverDrive Read? OverDrive Read is a browser-based eBook reader that works on most computers, tablets, and mobile devices running web browsers. It will work with the browser software Safari on your iPad or iPhone.

How do I start using OverDrive Read? Once you borrow an eBook from the C/W MARS Digital catalog website http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org, tap the Read button on your Checkouts to begin reading it immediately using OverDrive Read. Note: Unfortunately, due to publisher limitations, not all titles are available in the OverDrive Read format. If there is not an option to “Read in your browser” you will need to download the title in the OverDrive app (instructions for the OverDrive app follow). Available to read in OverDrive Read

How do I access the “Read” menu in OverDrive Read? To open the Read menu tap the middle of the screen, then the Menu icon.

What are some of the features of OverDrive Read? OverDrive Read has many of the same features as popular reading apps and eBook readers, like the ability to add bookmarks, search for terms, add notes and highlights, look up words, and change the font. It also offers some extra features, like fixed-layout support for graphic-heavy eBooks and professional narration for some titles. As long as you have an active internet connection, you can return to an OverDrive Read 9 C/W MARS Digital Collection

eBook at any time during your lending period and your place, bookmarks, notes, and highlights will be saved. Can I use OverDrive Read without an internet connection? Yes. Select the Share icon in Safari, then Add to Home Screen. Next, open the book from your home screen and sign in with your library card number to complete the download prior to going offline. Once the eBook has loaded, open the Menu (tap the center of the screen, then the menu icon), and check the "Offline Access" panel. It may take a few moments for the book to finish preparing. Once it's done, it should automatically download.

Once the download is finished, you are ready to go offline.

If the book doesn't download automatically, tap the cloud icon to start the download. When you are finished reading the book, or when the lending period expires, you can remove the icon from your home screen like any other app. Note: Some titles, like narrated or fixed-layout eBooks, are too large to completely cache (download) in your browser.

OverDrive Listen With OverDrive Listen, you can borrow audiobooks and listen to them right in your browser with a single click. There are no downloads or software required. How do I start using OverDrive Listen? Once you borrow an eAudiobook from the C/W MARS Digital catalog website: http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org, tap the Listen button on your Checkouts to begin listening to it immediately using OverDrive Listen.

Note: Unfortunately, due to publisher limitations, not all titles are available in the OverDrive Listen format. If there is not an option to “Listen in your browser” you will need to download the title in the OverDrive app (instructions for the OverDrive app follow). What are some features of OverDrive Listen? Using OverDrive Listen, you can change playback speed, add bookmarks, make notes, or leave highlights in borrowed audiobooks.

•Use the Play/Pause button to start or stop the player.

•Use Back button to skip 5 seconds backwards in the audiobook. If you Enable Jump Acceleration (in the "Tips & Secrets" section of the menu ), you will be able to skip further back in the book more quickly.

•Tap or hold the Bookmark icon to leave a bookmark or highlight.

•Drag the seekometer to move back or ahead in the audiobook. You'll also see chapter breaks, bookmarks, and highlights here.

When you return to an OverDrive Listen audiobook, your listening position, bookmarks, notes, and highlights will be saved. If you borrow the audiobook again in the future, you'll be able to access your old listening progress, bookmarks, notes, and highlights, as long as it's the same edition of the audiobook. Nook App eMagazines (Nook Periodicals)

Magazines from the C/W MARS Digital Collection (http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org) come in the NOOK periodicals format, which means that you will need the free NOOK reading app to read them. Follow these steps to find, get, and read NOOK periodicals from the C/W MARS Digital Collection: 11 C/W MARS Digital Collection

Install the Free Nook App Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. Search for “Nook” and tap GET and INSTALL.

Checkout a Nook Magazine from the C/W MARS Digital Catalog 1. In your web browser Safari go to the C/W MARS Digital Collection: http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org. To find a magazine, scroll down the page where you will see them featured, search by the name of the magazine using the search box or use the Advanced Search to find all titles in the “NOOK Periodicals” format.

First select Advanced Search. Tap on the All Formats drop down menu and select Nook Periodicals and tap Search.

2. Once you have found a magazine that looks interesting, tap it and select Send to NOOK app.

3. A pop-up window will open, explaining what happens the first time you send a magazine to NOOK. Select Accept to Continue. Note: Check Don't show this message again if you do not want to see this pop-up every time you get a magazine from the C/W MARS Digital Catalog.

4. If you are not already signed into your library account, you will be prompted to do so now.

If this is your first time getting a NOOK magazine, continue to step 5. If you have sent magazines to your NOOK account before, skip to step 7. 5. The first time you send a magazine to your NOOK account, you will be taken to a Barnes & Noble page to sign into your NOOK (BN.com) account. If you do not already have a free NOOK account, you will be prompted to register for one.

6. After you have signed into (or created) your NOOK account, select Grant Access. This is a one-time step that allows magazines in your library account to be sent to your NOOK account.

Note: None of your personal information from your NOOK account will be shared with OverDrive or your library. 7. Your magazine will now be sent to your NOOK account. On the C/W MARS Digital Collection website, you will be taken to your Periodical History page, where you can see a complete list of magazines you have successfully sent to NOOK. To read your magazine, switch over to the NOOK reading app and sign in using your Barnes and Noble account. Note: A window may pop up asking you to add a credit card. Magazines that you send to the NOOK app will stay in your NOOK account forever (unless you manually remove them). You do not have to worry about returning them to your library, and you will never be charged for them. Note: Barnes & Noble will put free eBooks (often classics) in your Library. If the magazine was not successfully sent to your NOOK account, you will find it waiting on your Checkouts (located under your Account on the C/W MARS Digital Catalog website (http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org) From here, you can select Re-send to NOOK app to try again, or Clear from Checkouts to remove it from your library account.

How do I read my magazine in the Nook app? Open the Nook app and sign in with your Barnes and Noble (BN.com) account. Your magazine will be in your Library. If the app does not open in the Library, you may go to it by clicking on the Nook app Menu icon, which is the three lines on the upper left hand side of the app. Next, click on Library.

How do I return NOOK periodicals? Once you successfully send a NOOK periodical to your NOOK reading app, it is yours to keep. You do not have to worry about returning it to your library, and you will never be charged for it. If you leave a periodical on your Checkouts without successfully sending it to NOOK or removing it from your library account, it will automatically expire from your library account at the end of its lending period, like other digital titles.

Kindle App Kindle Format eBooks

The C/W MARS Digital Collection has eBooks available in several formats (EPUB, PDF, & Kindle). Both the EPUB & PDF eBooks may be read in OverDrive Read and downloaded to the OverDrive app. You may only read Kindle format books in the Kindle app.

Note: A majority of eBooks titles in the C/W MARS Digital Collection are available in multiple formats and often it will be your choice of what format you prefer to read the eBook in. Since many iPad and iPhone users already have an Amazon account and the Kindle app installed on their devices the following instructions assume you have already installed the Kindle App and created an Amazon account. If you have not done so you will need to prior to checking out an eBook in the Kindle format. Follow the steps below to checkout and download an eBook in Kindle format from the C/W MARS Digital Collection and send it to your Kindle app.

Checking Out a Kindle Format eBook 1. Using your iPad or iPhone’s web browser Safari, go to C/W MARS Digital Collection: http://digitalbooks.cwmars.org 2. Begin by logging into your account. Click the Sign In button at the top of the page. Now enter your Harvard Public Library card barcode number and click Sign In. 3. Now that you are logged in, the next step is to browse the collection of eBooks. The simplest way to browse the collection of eBook titles is to use the navigation menu on the top of the page to view either fiction or non-fiction eBook titles. You can also choose the “Advanced Search” option and limit your results to “Kindle Book” only. You may further limit your search by checking the box labeled “Show only titles with copies available.” 4. Once you find a book to borrow, you can tap the cover, then select more to go to the title's details page. The details page lists the formats available for that title, including Kindle Book (if available).

5. When you find an available title that you would like to check out and have confirmed it is available in Kindle Book format under the Available Formats column, tap on Borrow. The Go to Checkouts button will now appear. Tap Go to Checkouts. If a book is checked out, you may place a hold on it by clicking Place a Hold and you will be notified via email when it becomes available.

Note: If a title is not available in Kindle Book format you can still read it on your iPad or iPhone in OverDrive Read and/or in the OverDrive app with the EPUB or PDF eBook format. 6. Titles you have checked out will be on your Checkouts until they expire. Select Kindle Book from the Download drop-down menu that appears next to the title on your Checkouts, then select Confirm & get Kindle Book. You will be taken to Amazon’s website to complete your checkout.

On Amazon's website, follow the on-screen prompts to Get library book and wirelessly deliver it to your Kindle Fire. You will need to sign into your Amazon account to complete this process.

If you have already signed in to your Amazon account before checking out the library eBook, below the “Get library book” button, Amazon will display the option to select the Kindle device to deliver the library eBook to (use the drop down if you have more than one device or Kindle app attached to your Amazon account). 16 C/W MARS Digital Collection

If you have not yet signed in to your Amazon account, follow the prompt to sign in. Next, Amazon will ask you which Kindle device or Kindle app to deliver the library eBook to. Select the device and click Continue.

7. The Kindle app will download your eBook the next time you open it and tap SYNC.

Returning and Deleting Kindle eBooks Returning To return a title early, use your web browser Safari to log in to your Amazon account. Use the drop-down menu under Your Account to select Manage Your Content and Devices. You should now see a list of the titles in your Kindle ebook collection. Click the Actions button next to the book that you want to return. This button looks like a small box with three dots inside. A smaller window should pop up. Click on Return This Book, and then select Yes in the pop-up window. Deleting Once the lending period for a Kindle Book is over, it will expire. Although you can't open an expired title, you do have to manually remove it from your device. Tap and hold a title, then select Remove from Device. You will no longer have access to the book from your Kindle app. However, you can always access your saved notes and highlights through Manage Your Content and Devices (under your Amazon account) even after the book has expired. If you check out the book again, or purchase it from Amazon, your notes and highlights will appear in the book.
