VOLUNTEERS PRAISED FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE ON ANZAC DAY There is no doubt that the Coober Pedy RSL was the hub of town on ANZAC DAY. Enthusiastic volunteers arrived at 4.45 am to start preparing breakfast for those attending the Dawn Service. At the day’s end, President Bryce Tickner was still revving, but took time to ponder, praise and thank the volunteers who manned the various stations all day. “As president of the Coober Pedy RSL I would like to thank every volunteer that helped make ANZAC Day such a united community event. Without volunteers behind the scenes helping, it wouldn’t have been possible. Most people don’t see the work they put in.” “Frank and Freda, Erica and Paul, Gerda and Julie What a great breakfast that was. Every year you guys are there in the morning at 4.45am waiting for me to turn up.” “From Grant Steele the Vice President and Jan his rock, Jacquie Boland for always being there no matter what the situation and pushing with new ideas; Geoff Squires who did a sterling job behind the bar; Donna, Karen, and Jacquie, for making the wreaths, and selling merchandise. It wouldn’t be ANZAC Day without the traditional game of Two-Up. Two-Up originated ....... and was popular during the war and is still popular. The game generated a lot of interest well into the evening with locals all trying their luck.

To Dave Bowman - Two Up Ringer and Barney -TwoUp Spinner, thank you for keep up with the crowd. To Mathew Key for doing the PA system then moving it all up for the March - great job well done!” Another highlights of the day was the intallation of a French Mirage Fighter Wing, donated by the RAAF. Thomas Hammermeister what can I say? You are always there when we need something; no questions asked you just jump in. Rob Upton, thank you for the work you did and to come out on your day off to help us out! Also Ken Boland for his help cleaning up with his bobcat and truck - awesome thank you!

Photo: Harley Staines French Mirage Fighter Wing, donated by the RAAF was installed in time for ANZAC Day

Peter Lane who has done so much work behind the scenes as treasurer. Peter is leaving us soon and has resigned as treasurer. On behalf of all the RSL members we thank you for your service to the RSL! To Colin, Tim, Penny at IGA every year when we ask for anything you say no problem, what do you need? A huge thank you for the bacon eggs and bread, and one day before Anzac day Colin says to Thomas, “Well I think you should put the wing up for Anzac Day.” He was there waiting for me on his trusty fork lift smiling with the attitude, “Let’s get this done”. Thomas, his son and Donna, all turning up to get it done, That is community spirit and what a great coming together it was at the dawn service with the wing up.

Photo: Harley Staines The March begins from the RSL to the Cenotaph at the Town Rotunda The light that Rob Upton put in gave a stunning effect to the RAAF Wing. Without all of these people helping out it just wouldn’t happen. To the Speedway Club for lunch and dinner. All of the members were in there cooking, just so people could have a great feed. You guys have been a great addition to the RSL and I thank you for your effort. To anyone I have forgotten I apologise and I would like to say thank you for making Anzac Day special because without your support we would not have an RSL and it is important that we keep this tradition going.

Bardioota shortlisted as possible Radioactive Waste Dump

Coober Pedy Amateur Race Club may fold without Community support by Chevahn Hoad

After considering the feedback provided in the 120 day community consultation period that concluded in March, the Government has shortlisted the voluntarily nominated site in Barndioota, South Australia, as a possible site for a National Radioactive Waste Management Facility. THE HON JOSH FRYDENBERG MP, Minister for Resources, Energy and Northern Australia said, “Importantly, Barndioota’s shortlisting does not represent a final decision to locate the facility, but rather, it presents an opportunity to continue consultation and concept development with the community to ensure information is provided and any outstanding questions are answered.” “Last November, the Government shortlisted six voluntarily nominated sites for community consultation, with three in South Australia, and one in each of New South Wales, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. During the 120-day consultation period that followed, my Department undertook more than 180 face-to-face meetings with stakeholders, and visited the communities of each of the six shortlisted sites at least three times. Further, at least 35,000 information packs were delivered to these communities and in turn more than 1,700 individual submissions were received. Randomised community surveys were also undertaken to obtain a thorough understanding of the levels of support for this facility across each community.”

Coober Pedy Races is part of the circuit that provides an attractive venue for local and regional youth

It is a sad day when a community event such as the Coober Pedy Races and Gymkhana cannot gain enough community support to form a committee. At the second AGM for the year, held on the 30 April 2016 a quorum could not be reached so the meeting could not be held. At the AGM held 4 weeks earlier the positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer were not filled. The previous President, Secretary and Treasurer stood down from their positions due to leaving town or family commitments. It is time for a new committee and unfortunately no one is stepping forward to undertake the roles that largely go on behind the scenes over the months before the races. Without a committee being formed the club will have to hold a meeting to, at best, cancel this years race meeting in the hope of a committee being able to be formed later in the year, or at worst wind up the club. The Coober Pedy Races have been an iconic Coober Pedy Event for 47 years. It has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the life of the club. The money raised has all been donated to charity. In the early days a significant amount was donated to the Royal Flying Doctor as well as local charities. Over the last 10 years the club has given away $42,000 to local charities and causes which support Coober Pedy residents. The event attracts people from surrounding towns and properties to visit Coober Pedy. It also in past years used to attract past residents and family to Coober Pedy to spend the weekend enjoying Coober Pedy’s hospitality and the event itself. It provides a valuable event for other local clubs to raise money by holding food or merchandise stalls. Until this year it was the race and gymkhana weekend with the biggest prize money on offer for the region. Over the last few years local business support and sponsorship has been slowly reducing. Local business support, particularly through sponsorship but also indirectly through promotion of the weekend to potential customers, is critical to allowing the committee to put on the event. If a committee can be formed this year and you have an opportunity to support the event please do so. The committee has always been relatively small for the size of the event. The club gets a lot of support on the weekend of the races which is fantastic. We have a lot of volunteers both local and visitors who work together over the weekend and the days before and after to make the event a success. The race club needs community support now. The roles of President, Secretary and Treasurer (and if possible assistant secretary and assistant treasurer) are critical in preparing for the event. The club needs at least three organised and dedicated people to step up and undertake these positions. It needs people who can put in time before the event on the administrative tasks. Membership is still strong but no one on the previous committee is able to undertake those positions and put in the time required. Another AGM to try and form a committee will be held on the Tuesday the 24th May 6pm at the Coober Pedy Golf Club. It will be critical to form a committee at this meeting for the Race Weekend may be cancelled for 2016 and the future of the club will be in jeopardy. If you would like to be involved in this committee focussed on raising money for good causes please, please come along to the meeting and help form a committee to benefit the entire community. Membership is free and committee membership is open to any members to volunteer. You don’t need to know about horses or motorbikes but you do need to be positive about creating a great event for visitors and locals alike.

Police News At about 7 am, Tuesday 19th April 2016, Police attended Hutchinson Street, Coober Pedy, where hotel staff and a council employee had been assaulted in separate incidents by the same offender. They were conveyed to hospital with minor injuries. After treatment they returned to their duties. Of particular concern was the unprovoked nature of these attacks on people going about their regular business. The incidents were captured on CCTV. Police later arrested a 27 year old male from Coober Pedy for multiple counts of aggravated assault. He was refused bail and subsequently remanded in custody to the Port Augusta Gaol. He will appear before court again on 17th May.

During the evening of Thursday 21st April 2016, police responded to a request from SAAS to assist with the extrication of an injured female from Hospital Hill. Mine Rescue/SES and CFS also attended. A 60 year old female was walking back from admiring the view from the top of Hospital Hill when she slipped and sustained a substantial injury to her right leg/hip. With the cooperation of all in attendance she was carried from the hill and conveyed to hospital. On Wednesday 20th April and Thursday 21st April 2016, the Dept. of Transport Depot, Stuart Highway, Coober Pedy was broken into. The office was entered and vehicles interfered with. A set of spotlights were

stolen from a vehicle. The scene was examined by a crime scene examiner who took a number of exhibits for further, fingerprint and DNA analysis. Police are currently conducting further enquiries in relation to this incident and request any information in relation to the matter or the whereabouts of the stolen spotlights. During the evening of Tuesday 26th April 2016, Police attended a crash between a vehicle and a cow approximately 60 km South of Coober Pedy. The vehicle sustained substantial damage and was towed from the scene. The occupants were international tourists who were fortunately travelling at a conservative speed and wearing seatbelts. As a result they did not receive any injuries. This highlights the value of driving in accordance with the conditions and wearing seatbelts. It also highlights the additional vigilance required to travel safely after dark on remote roads with hazards such as wildlife and livestock.

On Thursday 28th April 2016, Police from Coober Pedy attended a Police Foundation Day ceremony at Port Augusta. The South Australia Police was established by Governor Hindmash on 28th April 1838. A plaque was unveiled by Police Commissioner Grant Stevens to recognise the significant contribution of our pioneering police officers to the Far North of South Australia. The plaque dedicated to those officers – some of whom paid the ultimate price while performing duties in the north of the state is now permanently on show at the Port Augusta Police Station. Police remind members of the public to call 131444 for Police assistance or 000 in the case of emergency. If anyone has any information of criminal matters in and around Coober Pedy please contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 or ring the Coober Pedy Police on 86725056.

Missing man in state’s far north 03 May 2016 7:48am Police are searching the Leigh Creek area for a man last seen on Saturday 30 April. The man was staying at a remote station at Angepena and police were alerted to the fact that he was missing at 4pm on Monday 2 May. DEFINING ‘ART & CRAFT Letter to the editor, Due to the misunderstanding among some in the community I wish to clarify by this letter a few things regarding the Art & Craft Fair held at the Croatian Club over the Easter Weekend.

“An Ode of Remembrance to the Dark-side"… on Anzac Day To the Editor Times and Dreams of long ago when Knowledge was the “Weapon of Choice” and “Monsters of the Moment” clothed themselves in the “Garb of The Dead” and sewed their Journeys into the Fabric of Fear as they Metamorphosized into “Pretenders wearing Thorny Crowns”…. and dancing to the “Music of Guillotined Minstrels” drowning in the Blood of the lost Generations... and the Lives of Mankind cut short in the never ending “Din of The Battle”.

2016 FLU VACCINE AVAILABLE ACROSS SA The 2016 seasonal influenza vaccine is available across the state to help protect those most at risk of serious complications from the flu. The free vaccine for vulnerable members of the community is available from local GP clinics, while the general public can also purchase the vaccine at a small cost from their GP or community pharmacy if they are aged over 16 years. SA Health Communicable Disease Control Branch Director, Dr Ann Koehler, said immunisation remains one of the most effective ways of reducing the impact of flu on the community.

The Croatian Club and the Gem Trade Association were approached on this basis and an agreement was made to use what had been a vacant room to showcase the fantastic variety of Art & Craft available in the town. It is only for the Easter Weekend and is an event held in a dust free climate controlled environment that runs for two days.

The Art & Craft Fair is a sponsored event, completely separate from the Saturday markets or Trash & Treasures held in Coober Pedy.

Now in it’s second year the Art & Craft Fair has created another aspect to the Easter weekend festivities that hopefully will attract visitors on the basis of Art & Craft. It is a goal for local art and craft people to work towards annually.

The conception of this event was to showcase the many artistic talents of Coober Pedy. The local art and craft talent pool are invited to attend and given the opportunity to display and sell their hand produced wares, whether they are crafted or painted.

I wish to thank all of those who participated; the sponsors, Gem Trade Association and the Croatian Club for giving all artists and crafts people in this town a place to showcase their work. Christine Challis Organiser.

Smartphones are a driving menace say police 29 Apr 2016 3:37pm. Using a phone while driving needs to become totally socially unacceptable, police said today. “We believe this is a significant road safety issue which impacts the entire community,” said Detective Chief Inspector Denise Gray, the acting officer in charge of Traffic Support Branch, said. “Tackling this issue is going to take a change in community culture – that means family, friends and colleagues saying to each other ‘put it down’. “A consumer survey* last year found that almost 80 per cent of Australians have a smartphone and that there are about 15 million smartphones in use across the country. “We also know that most people instantly reach for their phone whenever it rings or beeps, but doing that while driving poses an unjustified risk to all road users.” Launching twin road safety operations today – Distraction and Belt Up – Chief Inspector Gray said judging by SAPOL’s past experience, 50 Adelaideans a day could expect to be caught using their mobile while driving over the next month.

In February, 1413 drivers thought their phones were more important than their lives and 429 people didn’t care enough about their safety to wear a seat belt. The new month-long campaigns – focused on mobile phone use in the city and seat belt use on rural roads – kick off on Sunday. Research shows that using a mobile phone while driving increases the risk of crashing by at least four times and you are 10 times more likely to be killed in a road crash if you are not wearing a seatbelt. “These figures clearly indicate that a fine may be the least of a drivers worries,” said Chief Inspector Gray. “If you can’t leave your phone alone while driving, put it in the glove box, or the back seat,” she urged. “This behaviour is simply unacceptable.” The fine for a driver failing to belt up is $341 (plus a $60 victims of crime levy), while the fine for using a mobile phone is $315 (plus a $60 victims of crime levy).

“Last year SA Health recorded its highest number of flu notifications on record, with more than 15,000 people struck down by the illness,” Dr Koehler said. “South Australians eligible for the free vaccine include those over 65 years of age, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders children aged six months to less than five years and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and older. “People with chronic medical conditions, such as such as heart disease, lung disease and diabetes, are also eligible for the free vaccine. “Flu can hit anybody at any time so it’s important that people take the simple step of getting a flu shot to protect not only themselves, but the entire community.” In 2015 SA Health recorded a record 15,658 flu notifications. So far this year SA Health has recorded 545 notifications of flu compared to 1,011 at the same time last year. This year the Commonwealth-funded vaccine will include four strains of flu instead of three, including two flu A strains and two flu B strains. Symptoms of flu can include rapid onset of fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, sneezing, running nose, sore throat and coughing. DID YOU KNOW

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.

If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.

On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.

Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.

If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

THE HORROR TRACK THAT BECAME A HIGHWAY by Jenny Davison, Coober Pedy Historical Society On Sunday April 17, 20 members and friends of the Historical Society drove to three nearby places on the Stuart Highway that coincide with the old Horror Track, to hear stories of how the route evolved over the years, beginning with the first journey in 1921 from Coober Pedy to Kingoonya. This was undertaken by Arch Burnett and Jack Norton driving “Wilful Murder” a Model T Ford, after they were awarded the first mail contract from Kingoonya to Coober Pedy. A Tourist’s Road Guide, complete with map and details of the track, published, circa 1927, was studied with interest. This guide and map was used by a lone 18 year old Englishman, travelling to Darwin in 1929 in a tiny Austin Seven. His story and that of a married couple who also made the journey the same year, is told in the fascinating book, “Telegraph Tourists”. At the Mabel Creek turnoff, some history was told of Alf Turner, who took up Mabel Creek Station circa 1928, and a newspaper article read from 1936, telling how in that year, 400 cars had passed through Mabel Creek. The article I suspect, was attempting to drum up interest in a proposed car race of 6,500 miles around and through Australia, stating that conditions on the road from Adelaide to Darwin were comparable to those between Sydney and Melbourne. Extremely doubtful! At this point, we took off our fly nets and retired to John’s Pizza to hear more recent stories of adventures and misfortunes on the track by Broni, Brian and Edward. Of particular interest were those told by Trevor Gotte who worked for Kalman and Yolanda Szuk in the 1970’s, when many ingenious repairs were made to road damaged trucks, caravans and cars.

Some of our group on the Old Kingoonya Road, “The Horror Track” Photo: Sue Britt

Judy Sparrow kindly provided us with notes written by Mike Denison who worked on the sealing of the Stuart Highway in the 1980’s, describing the equipment he worked with, their camps, living and working conditions. This information along with studying the brochure commemorating the completion of the sealed highway made for a fitting end to the afternoon. I think we all agreed that while we would not like to return to the “horror track”, there was a friendliness then that cannot be found these days on the sealed highway. Everyone would stop to check if others were OK and even help with repairs, at times even sharing an impromptu picnic.

FREIGHT

On average, one woman is killed every week at the hands of a current or former partner. One in three women has been a victim of physical or sexual violence, since the age of 15, from someone known to them. One in four young people are prepared to excuse violence from a partner. This is a cycle of violence, which starts with disrespect. Not all disrespect towards women results in violence. But all violence against women starts with disrespectful behaviour. When we make excuses like “It’s just boys being boys”, we allow boys to develop attitudes that can lead to violence. We raise girls to expect ridicule from boys when we tell them “He’s only doing it because he likes you”. When we do confront unacceptable behaviour, we play it down by saying “Don’t worry, it wasn’t that bad”. We’re allowing disrespect to become a normal part of growing up. By doing so, we are unintentionally part of the problem. We can all become part of the solution.

STOP the excuses. START a conversation about respect with boys and girls. LEARN more at australia.gov.au/respect

Even in the bush we can trade more fairly!

ANZAC DAY 2016 THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT SENT IN PHOTOS!

Chk out the new guide A new set of guides that aim to ensure fair trading in Australia and protect consumers and businesses are now available online. The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) guides were updated by consumer regulators to help businesses learn about their rights and obligations and assist legal practitioners to provide advice to their clients about how to comply with the law. Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, Dini Soulio, said the ACL has been in force across the country for more than five years, and in that time important legal precedents have been set.

After the Dawn Service, those paying their respects on Anzac Day, enjoyed a gunfire breakfast before the March to the Cenotaph in the centre of town where a 10am service was held Photo: Harley Staines

“The new guides include a range of examples demonstrating how the one consistent national law is being interpreted and legal outcomes that are impacting positively on the marketplace. “The penalties handed down by the state and federal courts have been significant, some in the range of $2 to $3 million dollars in recent Federal Court cases. These high profile cases and substantial penalties are also now resulting in significant media and public attention.”

Five guides are available covering the following topics: * Consumer guarantees * Unfair contract terms * Product safety * Sales practices * Avoiding unfair business practices

Mr Soulio said the guides can be used as a valuable resource to answer common questions such as: what you can say in your advertising, how to compete fairly, what to do if you realise you are selling an unsafe product, and when you must provide a customer with a repair, replacement, or refund. “Under the ACL, all businesses have responsibilities when it comes to the products or services they deliver, how they market them and how they deal with their customers,” he said. “We want a thriving business community in South Australia where businesses are both innovative and respect consumer rights.

“Consumers benefit when businesses trade fairly, but on the flip side, both consumers and businesses suffer when there is non-compliance. “Since the introduction of the ACL, regulators around Australia have worked cooperatively in enforcement, education and policy and will continue to provide this support and action around the law.” The updated guides are now available to download from the CBS website. http://www.cbs.sa.gov.au/consumers/business-advice/ publications-for-business-advice/
