ANZAC DAY CELEBRATIONS

Tina & Dave Schefe

Anzac Day is a day of celebration, an observance in appreciation for what we call, the Australian Way of Life. Some applaud it as the Great Ozzie Dream. The high standard of living we all share, and which everyone loves so dearly, the freedoms we all enjoy, did not come easy. They were fought for on battle fields in far away places, by brave men and women. With God at their side, and courage as their weapon, Australians in war have known no defeat. What we share today as a country is largely due to the protection and sacrifices made by our armed forces, and those who supported them. Along with our cousins, the New Zealanders, ANZACs hold a special place in all our hearts. The gratitude we feel and hold sincerely, goes on display once a year in a ceremonial array of marching , banner flying, speeches, and wreaths of flowers presented in remembrance of the battle fallen at memorials throughout the country. Amazingly, in a democracy like ours, with all the freedoms of speech and conflicting opinions and points of view; of multicultural diversities and differing political persuasions, we can all come together on this one day a year in unity, as Australians all, and connect in accord honouring the fallen soldier, and give acknowledgement to our armed forces personnel, and ancillary services, for their great contribution to us all. Mount St Bernard College is well engaged with this established tradition. Our students and staff march and pray and add their spirit to the ANZAC commemorative praise. The education system we cherish and the freedom of religion we share, are all part of a greater national consciousness, in understanding why so many have fought and died in war. These same young students, Australia’s children, so precious to our lives and this country’s future, just their happiness alone, is worth fighting for and protecting. Praise God and give thanks to all those who have gone into harm’s way to preserve this great country we all call Australia.

CYBER SAFETY PRESENTATION BY SUSAN MCLEAN All students attended year level appropriate Cyber Safety presentations last week by acclaimed presenter Susan McLean. For further information please look at Susan’s website

http://www.cybersafetysolutions.com.au/index.shtml “Parents must learn about the internet with their child.” Kids today have access to and are accessible by many millions of people worldwide via the vast array of websites, applications and online-games. The unprecedented amount of personal information available on these sites makes them a perfect place for people who would happily identify their victims and gain their trust. Other identified dangers include exposure to inappropriate content, cyber bullying and harassment, exchange of inappropriate images and identity theft. Teens are often not aware that their words and or photos, which may have been intended for a small audience, sometimes find their way to a larger one, often with both the unexpected and undesirable consequences. Today’s parents grew up in a world devoid of these technologies. They often have little knowledge on how best to assist and guide them and when interest or concern is shown, suspicious kids ‘fob’ them off with the typical responses of ‘You won’t understand.....’ ‘Go away its private......’or ‘You have no idea..... ’Don ’t be afraid of technology. Learn about it and embrace it as your children do. Accept that they will access content that might upset them, often not because they went looking for it and make sure that they are comfortable coming to you when this happens. Spend time online with them. Cyberspace can be a lot of fun.

Deputy Principal—Curriculum & Admin As mentioned in the last newsletter, the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be held next week. The tests provide information on how Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are performing in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. It can be challenging for many students, however a positive and open approach is what is required. NAPLAN has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May. The results of these tests help us tailor our educational programs in ways that benefit the students the most. Term 2 is a crucial term, particularly for senior students. Please remind students to revise their study habits and organisation and encourage them to be on track with assignments. ‘The Successful Student’ tips in the adjacent graphic are a good reminder! Positive Behaviour Support Fortnightly Focus— Being Organised What does it mean to Be Organised for school?

How do you get ready to Be Organised?

In order to Be Organised for school at MSB you need to: 

Have all of the necessary equipment and books - check what you need and organise to buy or borrow it before you go to school

Plan your study and homework time - make a list of what needs to be done with dates they are due. Do it in small steps. Set short goals. Cross them off when they are achieved.

Be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing - organise your mind ready to learn.

Have your uniform ready the night before with the correct shoes, jumper and accessories

Don't expect to become organized overnight. It takes time. Try to just make one class perfect and then when you get the hang of it you will eventually do the same with all your other classes. Being Organised is a habit you need to form. When you leave school, whether you are going to be a stay at home parent, a carpenter or a nurse, you need to be organised to help make life run smoothly. Start now and you will be glad you have developed this skill.

Home Room Update - Year 11W By Teresa Wareing - Home Room Teacher 11W I’m privileged to be Form Teacher for a great group of students—Year 11W. This is a large and diverse group, with students from near and far. Here are five things that you should know about 11W: They are a large group representing almost half of our year 11 cohort. They come from all over Queensland and interstate - we are fortunate to have students that live locally, as well as many from Cape York communities, the Torres Strait Islands and the Northern Territory. I’ve never counted how many languages are spoken in this group, but it would easily be more than 10! They are making the transition to adulthood—and doing it well. Seeing the students transition into the electives and subjects that support their earning and learning aspirations is amazing—we shouldn’t underestimate the step from grade 10 to grade 11, it’s a huge academic step full of big choices, pleasure and pain. They grow so fast—I’ve seen many of these students blossom from shy Year 9 students (some not so shy!) into young adults—I’m sure that parents and carers would agree, these years fly by so quickly! They are a sporty bunch—I’m not boasting when I say that 11W are serious about sports —we have Sports Captains and sports heroes—most recently, Danuta Tomsana as age champion for cross country. Not to mention, some of them are running the Wheelbarrow

Thank you to our Mount St Bernard College families, our thoughtful friends and the ever generous local community for supporting the Year 12 Graduation Committee’s Mothers Day Monster Raffle. The Monster Raffle 1st prize included a stunning crystal vase (perfect for those Mothers Day flowers on Sunday), a fabulous beach towel, a gorgeous wall clock, beautifully scented beauty and hygiene products, a handy tote bag from Erub Island, and the sweetest honey pot ever seen, to name but a few. Second and third prizes were beautiful arrangement of flowers donated by one of our very creative MSB Mothers. The total estimated value of this year’s raffle exceeded $500 worth of goodies. First prize was won by an excited MSB teacher, Mrs Sarah Riber. We hear her daughters were also delighted by their mothers raffle win as they watched her reveal delight after delight as they unpacked the Mothers Day basket of goodies. Congratulations Mrs Riber! Second prize was won by a very happy and appreciative Year 11 student, Shirley Daniel and third prize was given to the surprised but delighted Ms Andrea Gower. Thank you to all who so generously supported the raffle through donations and ticket purchases. Your kindness and support is gratefully appreciated. Finally, we would like to wish our Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunties, and Sisters a wonderful Mothers Day filled with love, joy and happiness.

Kindest regards—Year 12 Graduation 2016

Can you make Shakespeare and poetry fun for all students? In Week 2, visiting theatre company Grin and Tonic proved that it can be done. They entertained students from Years 7-12 with performances based on Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Australian literature and poetry. Year 10 and 12 students appreciated seeing the plays they were studying brought to life on stage and everyone enjoyed the energetic and emotionally engaging performances. It was great to hear students of all ages talking afterwards about how much they liked a Shakespeare play! Thanks to Nathan Dowling, Joshua Lane, Maya Mitchell and Eev Braithwaite-Girle for bravely volunteering to take part in the performances.

During Terms 2 and 3, students have the opportunity to participate in the internationally recognised ICAS tests in Science, Maths and English. These exams provide additional opportunities to assess a student’s strengths and achievement compared to other children outside the school. Parents receive a report and the child receives a certificate of attainment. The ICAS tests are academically challenging and allow capable individuals to compete against students in schools across Australia and the Pacific region. Students in 7B, 8C, 9M, 10W and Year 11 students studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology will complete the Science test during class time in Term 2. Students in 10W will complete Maths and English tests in class time in Term 3. This will provide teachers with additional evidence of their ability to cope with the demands of academic subjects at Year 11 and 12. If your child is not in one of these classes and you would like him/ her to take a Maths or English ICAS test, please contact Sarah Riber [email protected] for more details before Friday 20th May. The school will cover the cost of the test for students. QCE eligible Year 12 students are invited to participate in the Writing test as a practice for QCS – this is a good opportunity for skills practice, however we are not making it compulsory given the high workload of students in Year 12. More information is available on the ICAS website https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/about

YEAR 10 SPORT & RECREATION This term, we are participating in the unit ‘Lawn Bowls’. Students will be playing at the Herberton Memorial Bowls Club each week to learn new skills, participate in a fun sporting activity and build peer relationships within the class. Already we have some emerging superstars that have a natural talent for the game. We would also like to thank the volunteers of the bowls club for allowing us to use the venue and for teaching us the skills of the game. By Mrs Brooke Radburn—Sport & Recreation Teacher

Home Room —Year 10 N Travels to Jump Mania I’m privileged to be Home Room Teacher for a great group of students—year 10N. We have had individuals make the peninsula AFL Girls teams which has been a highlight along with participation in Cross Country. Recently we travelled to a place called Jump Mania to investigate how our bodies respond to exercise. Students were very excited to start jumping as I could see all of 10N with huge smiles on their faces, consistent laughter and enjoying themselves. We jumped with joy till we couldn’t jump no more. It was a great experience to share with all involved and it has been a positive experience which all students have shared to all who want to hear how good it was. We are on a learning journey and enjoy each others company as we achieve a successful Term 2. Mr Ryan Mawdsley
