Acceptance The way to serenity and peace of mind. Reprint from the article “Suffering” on page 15

“The trouble is that most of us think happiness consists in the fulfillment of our wants and desires, or at the very least in freedom from pain and suffering. Actually, it consists in the serenity that comes from conforming our own will to the Will of God. We achieve happiness by forcing ourselves to accept what God wants for us.”

Came to Believe A 120-page collection of stories by A.A. members who write about what the phrase "spiritual awakening" means to them. The spiritual adventure of 75 A.A. individual members. Copyright 1973 This is Conference-approved literature. Available at the Bookstore B-6 - $6.00 The following stories are directly reprinted from the Book “Came to Believe”

Reprinted from Came to Believe, with permission of A.A. World Services, Inc.” ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Chapter 5 A spiritual Awakening Is sobriety all that we are to expect of a spiritual awakening? No. sobriety is only a bare beginning; it is only the first gift of the first awakening. If more gifts are to be received, our awakening has to go on. As it does go on, we find that bit by bit we discard the old life- the one that did not work – for a new life that can and does work under any conditions whatever. Bill W.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. LETTING GO (page 41)

For a long time, I had the idea that I must succeed, I must be right, I must be important If I let go, I thought, then I wouldn’t be anybody. Well, who was I anyway? Just a willful alcoholic woman. Now I’m beginning to see that letting go doesn’t mean giving up. It means opening myself to new vistas. There have been moments of what I would call ecstasy. I am thrilled and I am scared at the same time. I feel, “I’d better not enjoy this, because it’s going to go away.” It’s so hard for me to say, “Okay, you’ve had a little insight. Just let it happen!” The A.A. program says, “Look, we’ve got some things to give you that are really going to help – if you’ll slow down long enough and if you relax.”

These are not things that are going to make me special or get me a better job or make me important. They are just going to offer me a way of life that is beautiful. When I say, “I want to know something about the spirit in me,” you say, Go ahead. There isn’t anything to be afraid of. The darkness you may encounter isn’t going to last, because there will always be somebody to help you.” San Francisco, California

The San Antonio Archives

A special fund has been set-up for the San Antonio Archives to purchase a stained glass art piece for the entry of the Archives Room. The stained glass artisian will work with Board member Sheila S. and the Archives Committee to determine the layout for the artwork. The special fund was created by AA members who wish to participate in this project financially. All monies received will be kept in an account as designated funding for this archives project. If you are interested in participating, you may contact Sheila S. or call the Office and talk with Tomi. All donations are tax deductible. To view the artists work drop by the Bookstore, we have one piece at the jewelry counter. This work of art is by Eddie C.. Eddie has donated his artwork to Weekend in SA Art Auction in the past. This is an ongoing Archives Room project.

Our history is so much more than ‘old stuff.’ Our history is our groups, people and events. To hold our member’s stories, we created an audio library. The library is open to alcoholics to enjoy, and is set up in the Archives Room at the CSO. The library is more than just interviews of old-timers. It is their stories. Alcoholics speak all over town every week. An interview and a speaker meeting are very different. Just as our Stories grow as we become sober over the years. Serendipity Group has shared their speaker tapes with our archvies to copy into a digital media. Hundreds of stories have been preserved and will be held and not forgotten or lost.

This is a long process when it comes to cassettes. The cassettes have to play out completely to record. I have enjoyed the listening to these stories.

Our volunteers have also enjoyed listening as well. While going through this process we have found the stories of many members that have gone to the ‘meeting in the sky.

The Group Business Meeting: Where A.A. Service Begins Reprinted from Feb/Mar 1990 issue of Box 4-5-9. The 85,000 groups comprising A.A. today (108,000 in 2011) hold what co-founder Bill W. called “the ultimate responsibility and final authority for our world services.” But where does this ever lengthening chain of responsibility begin? Who has the authority to make it happen? The entire structure of A.A. starts with the single group; and how each group conducts its affairs has a ripple effect on A.A. everywhere. The direction of the group is essentially determined at its business meetings, where the informed group conscience of the member ship is voiced on matters ranging from group finances and policy to local intergroup and general service issues. Recognizing the importance of group business meetings, some A.A.s in Seattle, Washington, prepared suggested guidelines on the subject for discussion at a Group Officers’ Workshop. Following are excerpts adapted from the guidelines. Says a district committee member: “We are sharing these in the hope that others will find them as helpful as we have.” Who calls and organizes the business meeting? For most groups, this is the function of the general service representative (or the group chairperson, secretary, treasurer, intergroup representative or steering committee, if there is one). Usually held on a monthly or quarterly basis, regular business meetings have been found to contribute significantly to group identity and unity. When are they held? Since each group is autonomous, there is no one answer, but here are some ideas that have worked: Depending upon the amount of business to be discussed, announce the business meeting as starting 30 minutes or an hour before the regular meeting. Or else, hold it immediately after the regular meeting. In some instances, the business meeting is held simultaneously with the regular meeting, in a separate room and in the same manner that many groups have a “Step table.” Some groups have held business “potluck supper” meetings on nights other than those devoted to their regular meetings. Who attends? Business meetings are generally open to group members only. Some groups invite A.A.s who are nongroup members to attend, but request that they refrain from voting on matters pertaining to the group’s activities. As with all group conscience matters, each A.A. member has one vote, and this, ideally, would be through their home group. What kind of business is conducted? The agenda varies from group to group, issue to issue. But some aspects of group business remain fairly constant: electing new officers; scheduling new or different types of meetings; receiving and discussing the treasurer’s periodic financial reports; hearing progress reports from other group officers; and apportioning excess funds among the local intergroup, the General Service Office, the area and district treasuries, and more. The meeting might also plan interchanges with other groups or organizations and determine the group conscience concerning issues to be voted on at the area assembly. In addition to their business meetings, many groups periodically take a “group inventory”—an honest and fearless discussion of the group’s weaknesses and strengths. Also helpful are “sharing sessions,” in which members can air any problems or offer suggestions on how to avoid them. Meeting procedures: Most business meetings tend to be informal. But, if the need arises, Robert’s Rules of Order are generally applicable, so long as they don’t conflict with the Traditions. Many groups have found, however, that observing Robert’s Rules to the letter can be detrimental. Most members are inexperienced in parliamentary procedures, and some of them might feel too intimidated to speak up. Before an informal group conscience can be defined, it is essential that the members be given all the facts relevant to the subject at hand. In many cases, an individual member, or a panel of members, is asked to look into the pros and cons of the issue and present them at the meeting. Box 4-5-9, Fall 2011

Definitions of importance: Informed Group Conscience: The group conscience is the collective conscience of the group membership and thus represents substantial unanimity on an issue before definitive action is taken. This is achieved by the group members through the sharing of full information, individual points of view, and the practice of A.A. principles. To be fully informed requires a willingness to listen to minority opinions with an open mind. Reprint from “The A.A. Group” P-16 with permission of AA World Services, Inc.

The Southwest Texas Area 68 Summer Workshop

The Southwest Texas Area 68, Summer Workshop was held in Round Rock, Texas the weekend of July 8. The theme of the conference was “A Great Sense of Purpose’ and was hosted by District 22. The conference opened Friday night, with a party. We celebrated the 20 th anniversary of our La Vina, and learned about the role our Area had in its formation. Denise T. our Delegate gave a very informative and detailed report on the General Service Conference which was held in April. Our Area Officers and Committee chairs were all present and available the whole weekend. The Area Committees all meet for workshops on how to continue and better serve the alcoholic who still suffers. It has been a huge honor for me to see our Area in Action and serve our fellowship.

Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional. We define professionalism as the occupation of counseling alcoholics for fees or hire. But we may employ alcoholics where they are going to perform those services for which we may otherwise have to engage nonalcoholics. Such special services may be well recompensed. But our usual A.A. "12 Step" work is never to be paid for.
