Anyone submitting an article, “Letter to the Editor,” or photograph may request that it be returned by including with submission a self-addressed stamped envelope. Membership tri-folds: can be requested from the State Office, or from Tom Buffington (Membership & Retention Chair) at (507) 383-7068, or [email protected]. You can also find membership forms on the website at www.abatemn.org. When you recruit a new member, write your name and Chapter on the tri-fold so you receive credit for the recruit. Make sure tri-folds, Chapter information forms, and other pertinent business documents are written legibly, including area codes, zip codes, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. Use POSTAL CORRECT addresses. The following are address tips: Do not abbreviate County Road, Minnesota State Highway, Circle, do not use # sign (i.e. Co. Rd, ST, Hwy, CR, use Lot or Apt. or TRLR number, example: Trailer + number =TRLR 201 or Lot 201, or Apt 201). Memberships: Postcards go out to members who will expire at the end of that given month. Renewals must reach the State Office by the third Friday of the month, regardless of the date, to ensure you receive your next month’s Road Noise. Use POSTAL CORRECT address! Dear Fellow Motorcyclists:

American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education (A.B.A.T.E.) of Minnesota is a not for profit, grass roots organization that is committed to educating motorcyclists and the general public about motorcycling. A.B.A.T.E. members ride many different types and brands of motorcycles. We are all people with a common interest in a common activity. The fact that we share an interest in motorcycling is more important than the type of motorcycle we ride. There are chapters of A.B.A.T.E. located throughout Minnesota. Each of these chapters is represented on the A.B.A.T.E. Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD also includes the A.B.A.T.E. state officers. The BOD meets once each quarter to discuss the operation of the organization. In addition, each chapter holds a monthly meeting in their area of the state. A.B.A.T.E. is a member driven organization. Members are encouraged to participate in any of these meetings.

A.B.A.T.E. seeks to promote the positive aspects of motorcycling and strives to protect the rights of motorcyclists by being involved in the local,

state and national political process. Safer motorcycling, reducing accidents and fatalities can be best accomplished by education and training of both the motorcyclists and the general public, not necessarily through additional legislation. Our ability to enjoy many freedoms while riding motorcycles in Minnesota is the direct result of the work done by motorcyclists in our state. These people have joined together to fight for our rights and freedoms.

The efforts of these people have made Minnesota a leader in motorcycle safety. We have one of the toughest licensing standards in the nation, the best public awareness programs, and the most comprehensive rider education programs in the nation. These efforts have helped reduce motorcycle accidents, injuries, and fatalities in spite of the growing number of licensed motorcyclists in Minnesota. Precious memories - take me back to the good old days…

Johnny Paycheck had a big hit singing those words. Seems a lot of people these days want to return to some time in the past as well. Back to a time when everything was perfect and the living was easy. Bikers especially. Many of the motorcyclists I talk to speak longingly of a time years ago when gas was cheap and the riding community was not overburdened by regulation, legislation and enforcement. Oh, I’m sure that most of us tend to exaggerate the good times and downplay the bad in our motorcycling recollections. The truth is that for people who care deeply about riding, our lifestyle has always been an uphill fight. These days the issues we face are much more complex, making the battles of the past seem less so. But every motorcycling issue going back to the overturning of Minnesota’s mandatory helmet law in 1976 (the 200th year of American liberty!) has required great dedication. In the decades since, we have seen a huge spike in endorsed motorcyclists and motorcycle registrations. And similar spikes in the attention motorcyclists receive from government agencies, insurance companies and legislators. Last session we saw a helmet bill introduced in Minnesota. Recently, the Center for Disease Control has joined a chorus of government agencies calling for mandatory helmet laws for motorcyclists in all states. It is important to remember that the people working in the regulatory side of these government actions are getting paid a very nice salary with benefits. Monday through Friday they toil away on research, crunch numbers and call for laws to reduce your riding freedom. We have our volunteers. But we also have a secret weapon; the incredible passion that freedom minded motorcyclists bring to the table. Unfortunately, at times we use that passion against each other instead of those working against us. But if we can find a way to put all of the petty disagreements behind us and focus on our core mission of motorcyclists rights and safety we can achieve results that other organizations can only hope to accomplish. If we focus our energy in a positive way, it will lead to increased membership, better fundraisers, more volunteers and most importantly, the continued biker freedom we have all become accustomed to. Let’s all honor the hard work of the freedom fighters of the past four decades by rededicating ourselves to true motorcycling liberty. It will take a lot of work and a lot of money to accomplish but I have faith in our volunteers. I will do everything in my power to help, but I can’t turn back the clock. Our fight is now. This year is a very important year as many things will be coming at us as a group and we need all the right people in our corner to make it work. I am also hoping you talked to your reps and got a commitment as far as your personal rights and freedoms are concerned. I did and they both are in A.B.A.T.E.'s corner. So, time will tell which direction our rights and freedom go. A HUGE showing at Bikerday 2013 would go a long way to show we are concerned and informed. Plan now to attend. Supporting the MRF and Motorcycle Pac of Minnesota would speak volumes toward our goals, both nationally and here in the State.

Stay informed, stay active and stay focused on the BIG picture. Take petty differences outside and not to the chapter meeting. Need some motivation? Give me a call. I am a great motivator!

Just a few comments before the "new guy" takes over. By now your chapter rep should have the final numbers. The importance of obtaining sponsors becomes very clear when attendance is down.

Sponsorships are the insurance against factors beyond our control such as the economy, weather or competing events. Many of you know this, and have been doing a great job of finding supporters, but we can use more help to improve the rally's profitability. Talk to your chapter, assess whether or not you're doing all you can and make a new goal for your chapter's sponsorship efforts. Thanks, Ron

There basically is nothing to report again this month. There were no edited or new pages for the Operation and Procedure Manual distributed at the October Board of Directors meeting. The Ways & Means Committee met on Sunday, October 7th at the Ugly Bar in Montrose. After reviewing the reports we went through the chapter bills, the state bills and all of the deposits. Well, as reported last month we sold a total of 3818 tickets on the State Rally Raffle for a total profit after taxes of $4778.64. The grand prize winner took the cash which helped us in being able to payback to the chapters. All this information was given at the October Board meeting. Also, at the October Board meeting, I awarded the traveling plaque to the Flatlanders Chapter for selling a total of 807 tickets. WAY TO GO! I also want to mention that River Valley Chapter came in second with 450 tickets, and Central Chapter was third with 321 tickets. A big THANK YOU to everyone that sold tickets either out and about or at the rally. Without you, this could not have been achieved. Next year, my hope is that we can sell a lot more.

At the October Board meeting, I did hand out tickets and posters for the A.B.A.T.E. U 2013 raffle. The deadline for chapter credit on this raffle will be April 13th, 2013. Please keep in mind the following things when signing out or selling these tickets: 1. Don’t use mailing labels.

2. Don’t sit on sold tickets. Please mail sold tickets to me on a regular basis. Especially if there is a lot of cash. Feel free to deposit in your own account and write a check.

3. When signing out tickets, make sure that you know that person is responsible and can be held accountable if something happens to the tickets. If you are in doubt, then DON'T SIGN THEM OUT. Have them call me directly. 4. Please don’t sell these tickets out of state.

Also, keep in mind that all tickets need to be accounted for before the raffle is held. The chapter that has missing tickets after the raffle has happened will have money for those tickets pulled out of their general fund. This will need to be done within four days of the raffle. So please keep track of where all the tickets are that you sign out. Our committee is still looking for members. Please come and check us out. We do have a lot of fun and when we meet at Frank’s - he feeds us well!

A press release is being put together to send to the media detailing how, thanks in part to the efforts of A.B.A.T.E. of MN, the state has once again secured $137,245.83 through NHTSA Section 2010 funding and how those funds will be used in 2013 for motorist awareness. This is a big win for Minnesota’s motorcyclists, and the perfect message to send to the media to show how A.B.A.T.E. of MN works to improve motorcyclists’ safety. I’m also working on a preliminary design for a possible new tri-fold. As of now the project is only in the conceptualization phase, but soon I should have something to show to Mack and the rest of you.

And remember: if you have any contacts with any press, media or governmental types, please send them my way so that I can include them in our marketing database.

It’s Over

That’s right freedom fighters, the election is over and now we have our work cut out for us. Many of us will have new elected officials, so for those of us that are in that situation we will need to start working on establishing new relationships. We will need to work hard to make sure our newly elected officials understand that our freedom of the road is important to us. It can be very simple, just write them a letter or send them an email and introduce yourself and tell them what kinds of issues are important to you. I hope all of you will consider writing a letter of congratulations to all of your elected officials that were recently elected or re-elected. We all need to make an effort to stand up and fight for what is important to us and by making these simple contacts we can help our cause. The challenges that we will face this legislative session are some of the biggest that we have ever faced as freedom fighting motorcycle rights activists. That is your challenge this month, short, direct, and right to the point, make those contacts. One last thing, Bikerday at the Capitol is just around the corner. We need to face those big challenges head on by filling up the rotunda at the State Capitol building. This will be critical, our freedom of the road is under attack and we need to send a strong message that we will do whatever it takes to defend that freedom. Motorcycle Dial-A-Ride is a non-profit/charitable 501 C (3) organization established in 1990. The goal of Motorcycle Dial-A-Ride is to reduce the incidents of motorcyclists riding while impaired. This goal is accomplished in three ways:

One - we educate motorcyclists about the consequence of drinking and riding and we promote responsible decision making. Our message is: if you ride, don’t drink / if you drink, don’t ride.

This is accomplished by using our informational material hand outs, get home safe cards, bar napkins, BAC calculator & Ride Straight information on our web site. Visit www.motorcycledialaride.org for additional information.

Two - we encourage the use of intervention techniques. We promote motorcyclists helping motorcyclists and encourage individuals and business owners to intervene if they know a rider is in an impaired state and planning to ride.

Some suggestions to accomplishes this are, eliminate the need to ride by keeping the motorcycle and rider at the present location, find a safe place to store the motorcycle and alternate transportation for the rider, find a sober rider for the motorcycle and alternate transportation for the rider, enlist the help of others if necessary to successfully intervene, visit www.motorcycledialaride.org for additional suggestions. This is a free service available in the state of Minnesota on weekends and holidays beginning the last weekend in April and ending the last weekend in October. The hours of operation are from 6:00 pm on Friday through midnight Sunday. This past September the MRF held its yearly national conference, the Meeting of the Minds (MOTM), in Durham, North Carolina. A well-attended event, the MOTM is a great opportunity to learn what’s happening across the country in regards to motorcyclists’ rights. As well, it’s the one opportunity during the year where, through the voting process, the MRF State Reps can set the legislative agenda for the MRF as a whole. There were lots of great presentations given, and you can’t help but feel both fired up and scared all at the same time when you hear the threats that we as motorcyclists have to face. We’ve all heard by now about the spurious report from the CDC regarding motorcycling and helmet use and how the CDC claims that helmet use is the only method thats been shown to reduce motorcycling fatalities. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are threats from many fronts, and the MRF is the strongest opponent against these groups that try to take away our freedoms, and our best ally in the fight. But the fight is expensive. I know that you get tired of hearing how the MRF always needs money. And I know that times are tough. Believe me, I know. But the cold, hard fact is that the MRF is going through some difficult financial times, and now more than ever it needs your support. If you’ve never been a member, please join. Just go to www.mrf.org and you’ll find a link to the membership page where you can instantly sign up. If you’re already a member, please think about upping your membership to the sustaining level. Yes, it costs more, but the sustaining memberships go a very long way in keeping the doors open at our D.C. office. Washington D.C. is an expensive place to do battle. We maintain a very modest office close to the Capitol so that our fulltime lobbyist, Jeff Hennie, can quickly get to the Hill at the drop of a hat when a vote is looming. And while it may sound like I’m bragging, the MRF has one of the best lobbyists in D.C. But without your support, and the support of your chapters, it’s going to be difficult at best to keep the lights on and to keep Jeff on staff. And what happens if the MRF folds? There will be no one on in D.C. to stop groups like the CDC from attempting to end your ability, and your right, to ride a motorcycle. As I said, I know you all get tired of the same old song. But the only reason we keep singing it is because we need you behind us. Minnesota has been a leader in motorcycling rights for a very long time, and to those of you who have supported the MRF all along, you have my deepest thanks and most profound respect. FRANK ERNST (612) 801-2920 [email protected] Over the years I have frequently talked about motorcycle only safety stops, profiling and other forms of harassment and discrimination targeting the motorcycle community. I think many people felt it did not happen in Minnesota and they were happy about that. Well folks if you haven’t heard harassment, discrimination and profiling are alive and well in Litchfield Minnesota.

A.B.A.T.E. has been holding our annual State Rally in Litchfield for a number of years now, it has not brought any problems to the community and local business have expressed an appreciation for the added business our guests bring. Unfortunately, we have been the target of improper law enforcement techniques used by officers against motorcyclists. A few years ago LEO’s (Law Enforcement Officers) made the decision to crash our gate, to trespass and enter without paying a fee like we require others to do. They were not coming in because there was a problem they were needed for, they just wanted to come in to look around and show they could do whatever they wanted with little or no concern for reprisal. Why, because they are LEO. When this happened A.B.A.T.E. made an attempt to hold the culprits accountable in the courts. Because we were challenging the good old boy system we were not successful in getting a judgment against them, but we did send a message. We will not sit by and let you disregard our rights and freedoms without challenging your authority to do so. Since that time I do not think we have had them crash our gate again.

This year they resorted to new techniques. They singled out motorcyclists riding stock or nearly stock motorcycles and stopping them for having what the LEO called three headlights. These are motorcycles manufactured by Harley Davidson, sold and rode all over the United States. Only on rare occasions do we hear of a concern because they have more lights up front then some other models. So why were the riders stopped? It is this writers opinion it was just a fishing expedition by a rouge officer perhaps exhibiting some personal prejudice he may have against motorcyclists. It was a tactic he used to stop motorcyclists to see if he could hang something on them. This is the crap motorcyclists in other parts of the country have put up with for a long while and now it is hitting home. Keep in mind we are of the opinion these stops violate the rights of the individuals being stopped and we are taking action to prevent this from continuing.

Now it’s time for you to consider this question. Are you OK with LEO’s stopping, harassing and profiling you just because they want to? Or are you willing to put some effort into putting an end to this kind of behavior? For a number of years now I and others have asked that you record interaction with law enforcement. Every contact should be recorded because it may show a pattern of illegal behavior that would go unnoticed if it is not documented. Just like the headlight stops in Litchfield we have to share the information if we want to take action to prevent them. If we record the information from legitimate stops for reasonable enforcement actions no harm done. If we record the information and it shows patterns of stops for other then legitimate reasons we may be able to use the information to prevent it from continuing. How do you help? If you are stopped by LEO record it, write it down and if you are willing, send the information to me to enter in a data base. This will help us see if trends are developing and we may be able to take action to stop it.

The information that should be recorded is the officer name, badge number, agency he or she represents. Record date, time, reason for the stop and outcome of stop. If you are given a citation all of this information should be recorded for you on the citation. I would also recommend recording any information about how the officer acted or treated you, keep in mind they record your behavior, the things you say and do in their notes.

If you are not given a citation it will take a little more effort to record the information. You can look to see if the LEO is wearing a name tag and you may be able to read the number on their badge. The agency name may be on the vehicle they are driving. Many LEO’s carry business cards with much of this information; if you ask they may give you one. If you are not given a citation I would recommend you wait until the LEO tells you that you are free to leave before asking for a card or any other information you may need. If after asking for the information the officer retaliates by giving you a citation it is extremely important you report that. At that point we would need to contact our AIM attorney and find out how to proceed. I know collecting this information may take a little effort but you need to decide for yourself how much is your right to go about your personal business without being harassed by law enforcement worth to you?

The Northeast District meeting on September 30th was very successful. A big thank you to Mack for attending and being available for questions and concerns. At the meeting we discussed ways to increase membership. As luck would have it, Tom Buffington, membership & retention, announced a membership contest! What a great idea to incent the chapters to increase membership. The chapters in the Northeast District are all "pumped" to get started on their membership drives. Keep in mind when planning those membership drives or meet n' greets to promote attendance at Bikerday at the Capitol! We need a record number attending this year! You know how I’ve been talking about more and more women riding their own bikes, now I have proof. October was the end of our Mileage Challenge for the summer and the three people that had the most miles were all WOMEN!!! This is a great thing, unless you have a tender male ego. Callen Ely was the winner this year with just under 14,000 miles! I don’t care who you are, for a Minnesota rider that is a lot of miles. The kitties are the big dogs this year, way to go!

I hope all of you are going to get out there and vote this year. Don’t forget that our own Ron Lischeid is running for office this year. So if you see his name on the ballot, vote for him. You know he has our interests close to his heart.

Plans for our Winter Bash are starting to get nailed down. This is our chapters big fundraiser for the year and we always need help on this. If you would like to be on the committee for this just say the word and I’m sure we can make that happen. If you don’t have time for the planning part we always need help the night of the party. The more hands we have the less work it is for everybody and we can all enjoy the night. We have been doing this successfully for years and run it like a well-oiled machine. It’s almost too easy, Ha!

We had a few new people at our meeting last month which was great. There was a great turn out from new and old members. We also had a member that paid about three months ago but I forgot to turn in the paperwork. Sorry Joe, I’ve got it handled. I guess I owe you a Dr. Pepper. The Dial-A-Ride season is now over. Don’t forget that if you helped with an intervention or a pick up, call or email Dial-A-Ride and let them know. You don’t have to have them call you for a pick up for them to get credit. The more documentation they have on bikers helping bikers the better off we all are. I’m sure I forgot something, but we’ll get back to that next month. Until then

Well kids, as I write this today, it is windy as can be!! And we went from sunny and 80 to 50 and windy, all in the blink of an eye it seems. Looking at the weather report makes me sad because it seems that we may have taken our last ride for this season. Hopefully we get a nice day here or there that a quick scoot will be possible. However if that does not happen, we have to remember there are still plenty of fabulous A.B.A.T.E. things we can be doing even if we can’t be riding. You don’t have to be on a bike to carry a tri-fold with you to get the word out. You don’t have to be on a bike to attend one of your fellow chapter’s fundraisers. You don’t have to be on a bike to talk to someone curious about what you are doing when you are having a meeting in a public place, and let them know what we are all about. You don’t have to be on a bike to start planning next riding season’s fundraisers, rides and/or trips. And most importantly, you certainly don’t have to be on a bike to attend Bikerday at the Capitol and show your support for our organization. So please, as the weather gets colder and you long to ride your bike, take some time to consider other things that you can be doing just to get the word out and maybe even have fun doing it. Because after all it might ease some of your longing as it will be biker/biker related!

The holiday season is fast approaching and in December we look forward to supporting our local charities by helping make this a happy time for the kids in our community. Our annual “Santa Day” will be on Sunday, December 2nd, 10:30 am at KJ’s with our chapter meeting to follow at 1:00 pm. This is a fun time for all with Santa.

After the January chapter meeting, we’ll be having our Christmas gift exchange and some holiday joy.

Thanks to all that attended, sponsored, supported, and helped with our 3rd annual “Oktober Fest”. It was a gorgeous fall day. There were plenty of motorcycle and car enthusiasts in town that day. Beer, pop, food was cheap and plentiful. Vendors had some great items. And the Chmielewski Funtime Band was there to keep the atmosphere very relaxing. Thanks to auctioneer Ed “Fast Eddie” Myhre, and all who supported and participated in our live auction. There were a lot of great donations auctioned off.

Hope to see more of you at next year’s event. November is here and if we don’t have them already, we will have $100.00 A.B.A.T.E. U Raffle tickets very soon. Another lucky Jack Pine Rider won a bike last time. I got a feeling this year is your turn to win.

December 16th is our annual J.P.R. Christmas Party. Food is pot luck, so bring a dish to share or just come and pig out. There will be plenty of great dishes and cool refreshments. A very large expression of appreciation goes out to Trash and Dollie for providing free storage for the River Riders properties the last several years. Also, we want to wish Dollie the best with her move to California. All items were moved to President Ed’s garage in late September. Yes, Pappa Bear, even the door hinges. And to our surprise we found a soap box and a crystal ball. So with that said I am getting on the soap box and peering into the very revealing crystal ball. Yep, that’s my reflection, without the dew rag!

Whoa, all I can see is a very magnified Letter To The Editor (LTTE). Oh, it’s just sitting on last month’s Road Noise. More about the LTTE later.

I can SEE the Forest Lake library conference room as one possible location. While we are there we could try to dig up some bookworms for that fishing contest. Ok, November has elections, deer hunting, monthly chapter meetings, Thanksgiving, and holiday black Friday shopping. Yes, the Chapter meeting should be the top priority. Now, for that LTTE. We don’t want to hear any excuses. Just buy a State Rally advance ticket when they go on sale at the reduced amount. Who cares what weekend it falls on. Can’t go? Give the ticket to somebody that can go. Or buy two and you (they) can bring a friend. What, no money? If you look on EBay or Craigslist you can find a beat up helmet for about $25.00. Don’t forget your friend will need one too. What do you mean she won’t wear that ugly beat up $25.00 helmet? Looking into this very revealing crystal ball, it says if you don’t want to be told to wear a helmet, you better start investing in that helmet free head now. One last thing for Thursday, November 1st, 11:00 am at the Public Safety Building in Saint Paul, is / was the 2nd meeting regarding the Motorcycle Road Guard Bill. 12 members were already chosen to be on the Board. If you go, please let the board do their work. If you have any comments/suggestions please bring them up at an appropriate time. Well, as I write the November Road Noise I think what a nice summer we had. Lots of good riding weather for most of the summer. I had a good time in the saddle this year. Actually got out on my bike quite a few times this year. Life is good. But now that it is getting closer to hibernation time for us all, we need to stay active in A.B.A.T.E.! It’s an election year. At our October meeting we discussed holiday donations, MRF A&E donation, Buddy Bears, cold weather riding, elections and candidates. We thank all members who have made contacts with our legislators; emails, letters, phone calls, person to person contacts, and the big one, "Bikerday at the Capitol". After an election year it is very important to attend Bikerday. Keepin' it goin' with that re-elected legislator or getting that freshman on our side right away. I had the opportunity to speak with Lee Byberg (7th district congress candidate R) on the phone in early October. After telling him who I was and what I represented (A.B.A.T.E. of MN) the call was dropped. He called me back. He asked what A.B.A.T.E. was, I told him some and the call was dropped again. He called back again. I gave him a quick run down on A.B.A.T.E., MRF, Share the Road, things we have accomplished in the past etc. I asked him what he thought about mandatory helmet laws. He told me that the constitution established the limited role of government which includes personal liberty and freedom. Then he asked me a question. Do you feel more vulnerable and aware when you ride without a helmet? For someone that doesn't know much about motorcycle rights it seems he has some common sense. We don't know who will be elected so it’s good to get a head start on all of them. By the way, contact Collin Peterson and thank him for all he has done for motorcycle rights. Anyway, its deer season so, good luck if you hunt them, they taste wonderful and you might save a biker if you get one. This is also the season to be Thankful so be Thankful! Well a lot has been going on lately and as usual the Freedom First Riders have been involved. I will start by thanking all of you who showed up at Church October 7th to see fellow FFR, Justin Bous, off to Mexico for a few months to do missionary work. I would also like to thank our President Gary and Carol for all the work they did for Wolf's benefit at the Leaf Valley Mercantile, great turn out with great friends. It was sure nice visiting with Wolf and his wife. The ditch clean-up was on October 7th also and only 5 FFR’s showed up, A huge thank you to Gary, Bob Jespersen, his daughter Sabrina, Big John and Robert Hedine. October 7th continued with a very interesting trip to Abbott Hospital to visit Karen Forcier. The trippers consisted of me in the very back of the van, Carol S., Jodie O., Kelly H. and my wife Donna, need I say more. We left at noon and arrived around 5:15 pm at Abbot. If anyone is up for an adventure, these girls will provide that for you. I endured; I mean enjoyed hours of female chat. I was locked in the back of the van alone while the gals went into a restaurant to get some food. They seemed to be gone forever and when they returned they gave me my food which consisted of some sort of taco shell stuffed with white beans, corn and a heaping crap load of puréed guacamole. Oh they tried to tell me there was some meat in it but after I stared at this mess for a few minutes, I attempted to take a bite out it, and it exploded all over me, my beard, the floor, the back of the car seats and I believe the only piece of meat in that concoction made its way to Carol's Jacket. Sorry Carol. I arrived at Abbott very hungry and near death due to the 24 units of insulin I took in preparation for that special meal. We found an excellent parking spot in the back of the hospital in a nice quiet neighborhood. So what if we had to park in a pile of glass, probably from some unfortunate car owner’s window. I should stop complaining and be happy we made it there safe, right. Once we all made our way off the street and onto the sidewalk we discovered that someone locked the only set of keys in the car. I won’t name names (DONNA) and that’s when trippers decided this was turning out to be an adventure. Everyone was laughing except me; I was wishing I was picking up garbage with Gary. Kelly was trying to call friends to help us and then Donna found a security guard taking pictures of some other poor man’s car with a broken window. Apparently it was the car that was parked in our present parking spot when it was vandalized. We had a few choices to make. 1. Leave the car alone for an hour or two until one of neighborhood friendlies break our window so we could get in but that wouldn't work since the keys were in plain sight inside the van. 2. Break the window ourselves or 3. Call Big John to come and get us with the Dial-A-Ride trailer and smuggle our sorry asses out of this wonderful neighborhood. It was going to start getting dark and desperation was setting in. Well the guard finished taken pictures of the first victims’ vehicle and then proceeded to help/educate us. He got our van unlocked and instructed Donna to move it to a safer spot. I believe it was divine intervention since I went to church earlier that day. In the end we all had a wonderful visit with Karen and Brian, lots of stories and lots of laughs. Karen was looking good in her little shiny, silky geisha jammies. Update on the annual Northwest Chapter Food and Toy Drive, held September 22nd resulted in nearly 300 pounds of food goods and $200.00 in cash donations going to the Food Shelf in Thief River Falls.

Just as I sat down to start writing this grapevine I got the news that I became a Grandpa! It’s a boy, Jonah John Orn was born on October 8th at 7:47 pm, and he weighed in at 7 pounds 2 ounces and is 20 inches long. Now, let me try to remember what I was going to write…

Oh, ya, it’s coming back to me now. Remember as we go through life we have to stand up for what we believe in. As a freedom loving motorcyclist, freedom of choice is first and foremost. If we don’t work on it now the little ones of tomorrow will not have any choices left. They will all be told what they can and can’t do, with little or no freedom left. If you don’t keep standing up and fighting for what you believe in now, someday it will all be gone. Just like the smoking bill where you can’t smoke in bars and restaurants. Do you think after that passed they are stopping there? Think again. There is talk about limiting where you can smoke outside too, like in parks and other open public areas.

Before I wrap this up I need to tell you all that I will not be running for re-election for Southwest District Director this year. Kristie & I have decided to take on a little side job that will be taking up most of our free time. I’ll fill you in with more details as time goes on, or if you see me around just ask (that way I’ll know someone is reading my article).

Remember though, the deer are really out so please ride with caution. Way West had another great turnout for our October meeting. It is great to see our attendance picking up for the meetings. We had a lot of business discussed, fun and laughs.

Remember....our meetings are held at the VFW in Madison at 7:30 pm on the 1st Friday of each month thru the end of this year. We hope to see the attendance keep growing, the more there, the more accomplished and even more fun! We from Way West wish you all a very safe and great Happy Halloween!

Thank you to all of you who came out to help clean up the road ditches. This was our first time for our newly adopted highway located on Highway 4! Watch for our sign. Our Halloween party was a blast like always!

We need to get a higher turnout to our meetings. We need your input as this is your chapter. We have been throwing around the idea to hold the meetings at a set place/time for the winter months. As I write this article we haven’t set anything in stone yet. Our membership numbers are decreasing and not just within our chapter. With the cold weather moving in so fast, we moved our October meeting indoors to Grumpy’s in St. Boni. We really appreciated it and I am sure glad they could accommodate us on such short notice. There is a membership drive going on now until the end of this year. We need to really push these memberships. Our chapter membership has decreased over 90 members in the past year and it is hard to fight the battles we have coming without larger membership numbers. This problem is happening all over the state, but we need to do our part and get our chapter numbers back up. Try getting just one new member or maybe a couple old ones!!

Tickets are now available for the Grounded Hogs party. This year it is going to be held at the Rockford Town Hall. There will be free beer and food while it lasts and the band will be Third Shift. Auction items are needed and bring some food to share if you can.

The new web site is now up and running. Thanks to Charm for getting most of the work done and everyone else involved. I want to also thank Olga for her previous service on the web site. If you have photos for the website, send them to [email protected].

We will again have chapter calendars available, but with a limited quantity. We will be taking a count at the November meeting. If you want one but will not be at the meeting, let an officer know.

December 1st meeting is our annual pot luck and gift exchange, come join the fun! Bring a dish or dessert to share for pot luck, and a gift for the exchange. The gift can be anything from mild to wild, anything goes. We have our regular meeting first and then the food and fun commence. See you there.

The fall chill combined with high winds took the thought of riding to the meeting clean out of my seedy brain. There are still good riding days left in 2012, just less of ‘em. We had a good turnout despite the weather and it’s great to see some of our new members attending the meetings, we also get some guests who are curious about us and eventually plan to join. Welcome Aboard! Our Rodeo last August and the Minnesota Memorial Run brought about 22 renewal and new members to Buffalo Ridge. All told we are up 40 members from this time last year. Kudos to all of our membership. Joining A.B.A.T.E. shows you care about your personal freedoms as well as your brothers and sisters freedoms. United we stand, divided we fall.

With higher membership numbers you would probably think I am all warm and fuzzy. Sorry, but I am not. I am worried that not enough of the riders in this state are informed of the plans some of our law makers have for us. If we elect the “wrong guy” or woman we might be shopping for a new bucket to put our head in. A.B.A.T.E. of MN put out a legislative survey that many candidates responded to, I am going online just before election day and printing the newest most up to date survey and taking it along to the voting booth with me. Electing people who will help us defend our rights is the best way we can preserve our chosen lifestyle.

A.B.A.T.E. of MN has announced a Fall Membership Drive. Please bring more people to the fold, use the membership form on the back of your road noise or go online to sign a new member. If you prefer a Tri-fold let Renata Norgaard or I know, we’ll fix you up. I have signed a few new members this year and I keep thinking of more that I need to visit with. Bikerday at the State Capitol is just around the corner. There will be new lawmakers as well as seasoned re-elected officials there; we need bigger numbers than ever before visiting with them. We do make an impression and a BIG one is in order.

I can't believe I've been wearing long johns for the past three weeks! I want my summer riding weather back. Well, they say change is good. Officers that were missing: Becki, Kinger, Charlie, and Tony. We missed all of you. Hope to see you next month.

The chapter decided to have a food drive during Old St. Nicholas Day. The food collected will go to local food shelves. Jamie supplied a list of apparel and the cost(s) for each item. Discussion regarding logo, styles, colors, etc. ensued. She will get more information regarding questions that were brought up and let us know at the next meeting. Please let her know if you would like to order anything.

There is a Minnesota Fall Membership Drive for A.B.A.T.E. from October 1st thru December 31st. First place is a new banner for the winning chapter, second place the chapter’s flag will be flown over the U.S. capitol, and 3rd place is an honorable mention. Glacial Ridge will be donating monies to PAC of MN.

Mary gave us some heart breaking news at the meeting. She will continue to be a member of Glacial Ridge but she is unable to complete her term as secretary. You have always been a bright star and dedicated GR member and we will miss seeing you every month.

On a more personal note, it’s been a year since we lost our friend, Glacial Ridge Member Harry Lee. I carry him in my heart with me every day. Miss you Harry, hope you and Deaner are up there ridin’ among the stars.

Summer is over way to soon, but I hope everyone is able to get out and do a little more ridin’ before the snow starts to fly.

There will be no Toys for Kids fundraiser this year, so we have decided to ask our members to bring a toy to donate to the December 5th meeting and holiday potluck. We are also putting a collection box at the Bonfire from the November to the December meetings. Sounds like Justin may be offering some sweet deals for those that donate a toy when they come in.

We are always looking for new ideas for Chapter Fundraisers. Remember it is all up to you, our members, as to whether or not we have events. No Interest, No Volunteers, No Events !!!

Thanks to Brain and Kimberly Block for signing our chapter up to do the meat raffles at the Hutchinson Eagles on February 22nd and May 17th. We will need three or four people to be at the Club about 4:45 pm each day to go around the bar and sell meat raffle tickets, it ends at about 6:30 pm. I would also like to see as many members there trying to win their share of the meat as well. A good showing will be good for the chapter too.

REMEMBER our main reason for being in this organization is to keep a watchful eye on the politics concerning motorcycles and motorcyclists and promoting the education and safety that really saves lives. We need all of us to succeed. We don’t care if you choose to wear a helmet as long as the choice is yours. I’m happy to say our Chapter chose to donate $200.00 to the PAC Fund. This is a good start for our Chapters plan as to how are we going to battle the helmet law, with hopefully more to come.

BIKERDAY AT THE CAPITOL WILL BE HERE SOON. Please, Please, Please plan on being there this year; it is critical that we have an impressive turnout. I’ll be there. Our Chapter will again purchase four State Rally gate passes for the 2013 annual State Rally and remember, IT IS THE 25th ANNUAL. The Chapter members who register and attend Bikerday at the Capitol will be eligible to win one of the four free tickets. Just a little incentive and a thanks for taking the extra time to help us ALL. Thank You to ALL South Central Chapter members for your support.

Hello members of Lower Corner. Notice the pattern of the schedule of our meetings. The meetings are the second Sunday of each month at 1:00 pm at Stikers Corner in Stewartville. No confusion. The meetings in Rushford did not produce any increase in membership attendance, but it was a good ride and change of scenery.

I'll pass on some info that may be of interest. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has released a new safety video featuring the importance of wearing protective riding gear. The video,” Fool’s Gear, Cool Gear", talks about how a rider can be safe and stylish at the same time. To be stylin' the MSF way, go to www.msf-usa.org. Maybe you're thinking of going green? Not paint, that is bad luck. Electric! In August, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee passed legislation to extend tax credits up to $2,500.00 to buyers of on-road electric motorcycles. Brammo of Oregon and Zero Motorcycles of California are two U.S. manufacturers. I'm old fashioned, electric motors should be in golf carts, but who knows what technology will bring in the future. It's a bitch to press "1" on my rotary phone. The November meeting will be at Strikers in Stewartville at 1:00 pm on the second Sunday of the month. Brrrrrr - looks like we are into the next Minnesota season. Now looking forward to River Valley's fundraiser coming up in January. Our 'January Thaw Dance' will be held on Saturday, January 26, at the Eagles Club in Mankato. Looking to River Valley members to begin the search for items we can put in our 'grab bags' and for our silent auction. We are also looking for additions to our dance committee. We will announce a date for a committee get-together at our November meeting. We are looking forward to another excellent turnout this year! Step up and join in the fun we have putting this all together. Remember too that there are other Chapters that have their fundraisers this time of year. Try to attend if you can. The 'bottom line' is the same as ours - not to mention having a good time getting to know other members! Fun! Lots of things to keep us busy over the fall/winter. It felt good to be back at the Turtles Bar in Shakopee for our meeting in October! Come to a meeting and order a burger and fries while the meeting is happening and/or stop in next time you are in Shakopee and thank the owner for allowing TriCounty to hold their meetings there at no charge! Thanks Turtles Bar!! Please note changes above in meeting dates due to voting and New Years Day happening on our original dates. Our December meeting will be our Christmas party! So please bring a wrapped white elephant gift to exchange (this is something you have at home or a joke gift you would like to pass on to someone for them to receive). You may also bring a pan of bars or cookies to pass around and some pizzas will be ordered for supper that night (contributions welcome for this).

Our fall fundraiser also allowed us to donate to MN PAC and know that our contributions are always appreciated!

I have contacted Rhiannon at Products at A.B.A.T.E. MN about getting some winter black hooded pullover or zip front sweatshirts with the A.B.A.T.E. logo and the words TRI-COUNTY down the sleeve. I also asked her to check if she has access to the archives and if there is an old Tri-Co logo that was used that we can put on t-shirts for our Chapter too. I will bring any and all information to the next meeting. That’s about it for now. Get out and vote and make sure your representative supports our A.B.A.T.E. beliefs!

Greetings to all A.B.A.T.E. of MN members from the Flatlanders! If you haven’t already done so, put November 17th on your calendar. Our Chapter meeting will be held at 1:00 pm in Geneva, MN at Dan and Arvilla Bye’s home. Immediately following the meeting, we have Chapter members that have volunteered vehicles, with sober drivers to head to Truman, MN. We are headed to Truman to join in the celebration for Flatlander member Paul “Dog” Krause’s birthday. This is an event you won’t want to miss!

When the October issue of the Road Noise arrived you may have noticed candidate Shannon Savick’s response to the survey where it was indicated she would vote “No” on issues one and three. As you know, we want a vote of “Yes” on all three of the issues posed to candidates. Our Chapter President, Dan Bye, contacted Shannon with concern regarding her response on these two issues. During their conversation Shannon made it clear to Dan that she supports A.B.A.T.E. of MN’s stance on all three issues. She opposes any change to the current helmet choice law, she supports the increased penalty bill and she opposes raiding the motorcycle safety funds for any other purpose. We are fortunate that the candidates in our area, Rich Murray and Shannon Savick, both support our stance on these three critical issues. If you have not already done so send them a note and thank them for their support.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. As this holiday approaches, I always think of things I am thankful for. This year being an election year, I am keenly aware how thankful I am to have the freedoms I enjoy. I vow to exercise those freedoms and fight to keep them in place for my children.

THE VIEW PAST THE HANDLEBARS

November makes me tired. There’s just no denying it; when November hits, it seems like the labors of the entire past year catch up to me and all I feel is totally exhausted and drained. At first I used to think that this feeling of exhaustion came from all the fall preparation work – battening down the house for the coming snows, winterizing and storing the motorcycles, digging in for the long, cold months to come.

There’s no denying that getting ready for winter takes effort. There’s lawn furniture to put away, windows to be caulked, leaves that need raking, an air conditioner that needs to be covered. And there’s the sad, slow ride out to the storage garage where I keep the motorcycles. Bundled up as best I can, electric vest turned up high for the short, five-mile ride, I repeat the process two times, knowing that I won’t ride my bikes again until the snows melt and the sun starts to ride high once more.

But I’ve come to understand that my November exhaustion is more a reaction to the entire year than it is from any one month of activity. I think back over the year and take account of all that’s been, and of all that didn’t get accomplished. Good friends taken before their time, and others to whom I should have given more time. Rallies and meetings come and gone, legislative action that, despite giving it everything I had, still foundered on the rocks on inactivity and petty bickering. It’s an overwhelming feeling when I look back on it all, and too many times that look back reveals more of what I failed to accomplish than of what I succeeded in.

John Lennon once said that life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans, and I think he was right. The year starts out with such promise, but in the blink of an eye everything can change. Plans crumble, paths divert and rarely do things go quite as you planned. If that doesn’t make you feel tired, then nothing will. But in the middle of my exhaustion, I find energy and a reminder of why I keep going on, why each year I subject myself to all the headaches and the frustration this movement of ours can bring. A small plaque that I bought for my wife after her crash last year that hangs in our bathroom reads, “Live now: the dust will settle later.” And I find comfort in those words. They remind me to not spend time looking back at the past and lamenting what didn’t get done but to live in the moment, to look for the joy in each day and to remember that better days – days with the engine of my motorcycle quietly chugging along and the wind floating gently by – will be here before I know it. It’s something to be thankful for, the ability to live in the moment. I don’t do it very well. (Some who shall remain nameless would say I don’t it at all.) But I’m going to try this coming winter to remember that a person is not measured by how hard they’ve been knocked down but rather by the number of times they’ve gotten back up. And if I feel tired, it’s only because I’m still capable of fighting.

Have title (original engine on title), bike was running, but sat the last 3 months as I have been busy so is not running now. I don't have time to put into this to restore it. Frame has 48k miles on it, unknown on engine. I have put in new spark plugs, new gaskets on the mufflers where they attach to the engine, new carb boots/gaskets and a new battery with tender. I have two black side covers with emblems and 1 maroon left side cover without emblem. Bike has saddle bags on it. Bike would be good for restoring or parts bike. I have over $1,200 into bike with purchasing it plus replacing parts that were missing/needed replacing. I will only respond to emails with phone numbers.
